Okay, Nance, time to bring in the Welcome sign! Somehow I thought I remembered that you had your gardens elevated or well cordoned off from the buggers. Could you employ a grey fox to help with the extermination process?

Joyce, so happy for Rick that the house sold....tho bittersweet for sure. So glad that you guys will stay closely  connected to him.....for all of you! If how often I think of Michelle is any indicator of her spirit being nearby, she is definitely present!

Yikes, Luv, water bringing snakes out.....kind of scary, and I'm not even afraid of snakes! Tho copperheads lurking in the grass would keep me inside! Look down!! :)

    Tazzy, enjoy your mini vacay!

Tonight DH grilled some steaks that he picked up on his way home from golf. I made a big garden salad and we actually finished off some ratatouille that I found in the fridge. Obviously it does not spoil, since I made it well over a week ago and it has even travelled to the lake and back (220 mi) with us last weekend. Who knows.....we could wake up in the middle of night sick!! ;/

Lacey, hope you slept through the night. DH suffered through some food poisoning that started in the night several years ago. No fun!  I cleaned out the new fridge last night and threw out a few disgusting things containers and all. Apparently they'd been in there a little more than a week lol!

We've had red foxes from time to time. Where are they when I need them!  I do have raised beds but only the beans are fenced. We may have to rethink the whole thing our  giveup gardening. Too frustrating.

tazzy - it is a funny picture - and yes, my genetic material wins - both of my kids look like me, all of their cousins on my husband's side look like each other - my kids are the fair-skinned, blue-eyed ones.

I believe that DS relocated the groundhog away from the fire station and just let go.  That area has a lot of them.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

It has been eons since I checked in, was thinking of everyone today.  Glad to "see" so many of you.  Not much to report on the cooking front.  Just got home from a vacation visiting some ballparks (Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Toronto) on a mission to get to all the mlb parks, but in no particular time.  Had a lot of ballpark food.  I guess I am prejudiced, but so far the food in the Phillies park is so much better!  Also saw Niagara Falls on the trip which is really impressive.  Rounding out the vacation with one last game at home tonight in Philly.  We splurged on the good seats, but it is really the outcome of the game that is the most important to me.  Sending my best wishes to all, oldies and newbies.  Couldn't catch up on everything, but what I did catch up on sounds delish!  Take care all.  Kay

Kay, this is really weird. I was just thinking of you yesterday and wondering how you are. What a treat to see your post. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity! :) Glad you are well and enjoying the mlb ballpark trips. Philly has good food in general, so I wouldn't be surprised if their ballpark food was good. I tend not to eat much ballpark food anymore, but we recently attended an event at Fenway that had the most delicious food...I've never seen such selections during a regular game. ;) So good to have you check in!

Nance, we are both fine after the ratatouille. Amazing! I have surrendered with gardening since it is just too frustrating to have the furry guys foil me! Guees I'll just rely on the farmer's market. :/

About to head over to the wedding.....could not ask for a better day weather-wise!

Hi to everyone!  I've been managing to read posts since we left home on June 18th but cannot post on my cell phone.  We've had safe travel, first to Decatur, IL, where we spent four days parked at dh's sister's house.  She and her dh celebrated their 50th with a re-enactment and catered dinner.  There was also a cookout at their house for friends and family who were in town for the festivities.

Next we travelled to Fairmont, MN, to visit a couple we met in Park Rapids, MN, at Pine Hollow Resort, where we stayed the past two summers.  We ate with them at two of Fairmont's favorite eateries.  The Channel Inn, which features outdoor seating overlooking one of Fairmont's 5 lakes.  It's a burger place and dh and I had the blue burger with blue cheese.  It was very good and very oversized.  The other eatery is Jake's Pizza which has been in business for 40 years and has a secret recipe for the crust (thin and crispy).  DH and I enjoyed a round of golf with the husband.

Now we're in Ortonville, MN, in an rv park situated on Great Stone Lake.  I can raise my head and look out the rear window of the 5th wheel and see a lovely view of the lake.  The rv park has Wi-Fi so I'm writing on my laptop.   Today we travelled over an hour to Eden, SD, which is celebrating its centennial.  We have friends in Eden who lived in Louisiana for 30 yrs.  The parade was really entertaining.  John Deere tractors were well represented!  The population of Eden is around 100 but there were lots of people in town today.

On the way back to Ortonville, we stopped at Roslyn to buy balsamic vinegar at the International Vinegar Museum.  I kid you not!  You can google their web site.

For dinner tonight we went to a supper club near Ortonville and had their walleye special.  The fish was delicious.

We'll stay here another day and then travel to Pine Hollow Resort on Monday.  With any luck we'll be there through July and August and I should resume doing some cooking once we're settled.

I managed to buy two cookbooks today!  The Centennial Cookbook sold in Eden and Recipes With a Natural Touch at the Vinegar Museum.

Hey Carol! Good to hear from you, we've missed you!

Tonight was grilled pork steak, fresh green beans with garlic butter and baked corn. Tomorrow is a friend's birthday. He is quite the pie fanatic, so for his birthday I baked him 3 of his favorite minipies --  pecan, coconut cream and cherry. I had coconut cream left over so of course we have a mini pie too! Not one of dh's faves but I'm betting he won't turn it down lol!

I made a giant ham macaroni salad so we have eats for a couple of days. DH got home about 3:30 (he left home at 5 am) and slept on the couch for about 2 hours. Now watching NASCAR racing.

Carole - hope you have good weather for your traveling and safe travel. The food sounds delicious.

Nancy - your poor forlorn squash plants. Groundhog doesn't eat squash blossoms? Yum coconut cream pie. I did splurge on a new Blue Bell flavor - Magic Cookie Bar like the old recipe. I think a small bowl is calling my name, my reward for finishing the dishes in a bit.

Bedo-just saw your post that DD is home safe.  Still in my thoughts.

Hectic day---Church Rummage sale at 7:30, then picked 2 gallons of black raspberries at my Dads--the briars and the bugs were awful-windy and humid from rain. Then worked in the Garden until noon, then showered and went to  the Grocery Store---Dinner was chicken salad sandwich and a piece of raspberry pie that I made a day ago from the first picking of berries....should have been grilled salmon and a baked potatoe, but I was too frazzled to cook.

Bedo - thank heavens.  Still holding you close.

Quiet weekend.  Water aerobics this morning.  Lunch was fresh tomatoes & cottage cheese.  Dinner was raw carrots, cauliflower & radishes w/ranch dip - accompanied by "mexican mini" tomatoes.  These are just a little bigger than the end of a pencil eraser and VERY sweet.  I paired those offerings with a glass of pinot noir and had 2 Meyer Lemon mini Miracle Tarts made by Hail Merry for dessert.  All organic/raw oils/paleo friendly/non gmo/gluten free/kosher/etc. and WONDERFUL.  I got them from Costo & really worth checking out as an "emergency" dessert to keep in the fridge.  Only 100 calories so YES of course I covered them with whipped cream.

minus - loved the tart story!  My mom used to serve cottage and tomato salads often in the summer - my dad grew wonderful tomatoes in the backyard. We always had them with just a little French dressing (the one with ketchup and paprika in it) and some sliced green onion.  This was alternated with spinach salad, made with spinach from the backyard, with crumbled bacon and chopped hard-boiled egg and a red wine vinaigrette.  Your post made me nostalgic!

    Moon,

Same for you and your knee. Your history as well as Special K are two that I read a lot as I struggle. You have had many attempts and were finally successful. Special K faced another loss which makes me think , but helps me to see you can go on.   I am better physically and emotionally. Finding strength to go forward  and be positive with whatever the next attempt at a lefty will be. Not sure yet.  I am stuck in my brain that I want a matched set. Either 2 implants with the flaps or 2 flaps no implants. The latter being my preference. PS says left needs both, right is ok. I will have to accept that due to different flaps they will look differently . He has said Flap has to be pedicled/connected to blood supply and tunneled most likely from back. But  they will react differently. The flap is like a natural breast. It will move, bounce..eventually sag ....etc like the original. The implant side will not sag, nor move the same.  I don't want to try it now, then go back to change righty.   Then I start thinking, what if I ask for righty to be same and then she has issues. So for now just thinking, even though I want a match set, Ins wont pay for another recon attempt/revision for 90 days. So I have some time to figure this out, keep researching, possibly try second opinion if my PS if not familiar with research out from NOLA about artery use. (unless he already tried and it failed too). My next meeting is 7/8 to discuss (not just hear) what next steps can be.

Iggy is on the mend. They started a very small dose blood thinner and will scan brain on Monday to see if any effects. The blood thinner can help him get rid of clots sooner and back to somewhat normal activities.  He had  tried out for JV football and marching band, made it into both. He choose Music.  I pray he is still able to do marching band and they will accomodate since he won't be able to do summer practices.

Making waffles for late breakfast with kids. They were up late last night and are all still sleeping. The smell should wake them up soon.

    Take care,

    Vivian

So good to hear from you, Carole, and that the start of your summer venture is going well!

Vivian, glad that your nephew is doing well...and hoping that he can get back to his activities in the not too far future! And sorry for you that you have to go through such painful recon decision making. BC is a bitch! I just received a letter from the head of radiology that based on my family history (two aunts with BC) that they want me to come in for genetic counseling and possibly testing. My BS had decided with me at time of DX that I didn't need it. Great....to me, this means that certain newfound knowledge could lead to recommendation for ovary removals. And here I am nixing the anti-hormonals. It is curious that I am being recommended for this at this point. Wonder if my MO (whom I very much like and respect) ratted me out about going meds rogue. Tho that doesn't seem her style. Oy! Just the gift that keeps on giving!! Or I giess in my case,....."you can run but you can't hide!"

Bedo, hope things are going well with DD now that she is home....is that real home, or hospital home?

On the really bright side, we had an unbelievable time at our friend's daughter's wedding. Absolutely magical in a natural kind of way! And of course, left my  cell phone home by mistake (last minute handbag switch), so at a wedding where I would be competing with the photographer, I had to settle for a few paltry pix from DH's old not too reliable phone. The photographer was happy!

We are about to walk up to the farmer's market, so later I will post the unbelievably delicious apps and dinner choices we had at the garden wedding....probably the best I have ever had! And maybe if I get on my actual laptop I can post a beautiful pic of the setting if I can find one. I will NEVER forget my cell phone again! Particularly annoying since I'd spent an hour selecting pix to erase to free up space! :/

Oh, Nance, your zucchini makes me sad......same state as my poppy plants...at least your guys aren't the drug addict we had! Love the other garden shots....

The groundhog abode was destroyed today. No sign of the critters, hope they decide to look for another summer home. The Unwelcome sign is up!

Tonight's dinner is at our friend's whose birthday is today. Wasn't sure I was going to make it. I've been fighting a UTI and got an rx for an antibiotic. Unfortunately, it made me sick sick sick. Middle of the night stuff Lacey. Took me a while to feel human this morning. Unfortunately, it was working on the uti, but definitely a case of the cure being worse than the disease. I'm waiting on another rx. This stuff always happens on the weekend. I never used to have side effects from drugs, but I have become one of the <1% who is going to experience an se from something.  It sucks.

I spent the middle part of the morning working on flower beds. Guess who showed up there last night and ate the tops off the geraniums? They also knocked over one of  my very large pots. I think they were trying to eat the sweet potato vine as it looked gnawed on. I was going to cut the geraniums back anyway so they just saved me a step. It is hot and HUMID here. I had to come in and sit in a cold shower. My reward was my afternoon cup of java and one of the pecan tartlets I made for our friend's birthday (they wouldn't all fit in the box lol!)

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. Bedo, I hope DD is doing better. Lacey, I can't wait to hear about the wedding food. Viv, hope Iggy continues to improve and Monica, I hope you are too!  Lots of hopes there!

Nancy, I hope you and your dh can evict the garden thieves while there is still something left of your garden.  Your beds are very pretty and you deserve to harvest the veggies for your own use.

It was 68 degrees when I got up this morning.  I opened the door and the air felt good.  So I turned off the a/c and latched the door open and opened some windows!  I got in a 40 min. walk up and down the streets of the rv park.  Then for brunch, I cooked some bacon and made BLT's using some tomatoes I'd bought before we left home.  Tonight I'll use the last of them in a salad.

There will be no tomatoes available at the farmers' mkts up here in MN until late July or August.

This was our first do-nothing day since we left home on the 18th.  I even watched an old movie with Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotton--NIAGARA.  It was quite a thriller for the early 50's.

Tomorrow we move on to our summer destination--Pine Hollow Resort near Park Rapids.

It won't be 68 here, day or night, until mid October.

Today Sharon and I went kayaking at Watson Lake in central Arizona.  It was in the 90F degree range.  SPF 50 sun screen seems to have saved me from sunburn.

Nancy, my grandmother used a small pellet gun to shoot the garden marauding pests.  If that didn't work, grandpa would open the door or window slightly, stand back from the opening a few feet and use a .25-20 Winchester rifle.  He said they did that for over 65 years without anyone ever saying anything--even though they lived in the city.  I've fired both rifles...the pellet gun is quiet enough that it would go unnoticed in the city...the .25-20...I think the neighbors also had gardens and appreciated their efforts! :-)

Tonight, I made chicken (again).  This time, I slit it open along the edge to make a pocket and stuffed it with creamy goat cheese mixed with a finely diced Serrano pepper, a little bit of minced fresh garlic and some basil.  A salad and corn on the cob rounded it out.

It was a quick supper as I went out and tried to work on the Isuzu Trooper some more.  I didn't get anything useful done--other than to find I need a more powerful impact wrench.

Brat diet. I don't get it. I've been eating nothing but Brats and still have the big D. Brat after Brat and it's not working. Humph. So much for that.

Ok. Ok. Joke. Banana rice applesauce and toast.  Trying. Uk. LOL

Wow Lacey - that food sounds delish.

Moon - thinking of you.  I had the Big D for two weeks out of three all last year!!  I got soooo sick of rice & toast.

Eric - 68?  What's that!!   I'm with you.  We might see that in October.  But Houston can still be 90 for Christmas Day.  I've often cooked turkey with the air conditioning roaring.

Oh someone asked about two tomato seasons - Lacey?  Yes you can plant again in the fall.

Dinner was chicken and rice. Snack was banana.
