So...whats for dinner?

Dinner was a delicious Lima bean and chicken soup delivered by a golf friend and her Dh, who may have cooked it. There is also a container of red bean soup. Along with the soup we had multi-grain bread and butter. The bread was included in the food delivery.
Another golf friend is providing dinner tomorrow night. I'm really grateful for the kindness and generosity

carole - so glad your friends are helping you out with dinner - that is so nice!

Hi Tempy.
DD decided to do some cooking tonight...chicken tacos... So, it looks like there is a taco theme going on tonight.
Carole, the food deliveries sound both good and helpful.....

We are in Istanbul. What a fascinating place this is, and I have hardly seen any of it yet! The manager of our apartment spent WAY too long with us last night. By the time it was all done, it had been at least 8 hrs since we had had any water. We headed out around 9pm and the first ATM was money free. Thank goodness we persevered and went to a second location. Cash in hand, we looked for food. Ended up on a quiet pedestrian street where we got the "sample plate" and shish kebobs. The sampler plate included two eggplant preparations, a nut-hot pepper mixture of some kind, hummus, yogurt with cucumbers and yogurt with dill and garlic, a small green salad, and a large stuffed grape leaf. The pita was freshly baked with sesame seeds sprinkled liberally on top. A few cucumber slices completed the plate. The shish kabobs were actually what I would call a kofta, pressed around a skewer for grilling. He got the spicy one, I didn't. They were both excellent. The plate also had a small parsley-red onion salad, grilled green pepper, lots of flatbread, and a mound of bulghar cooked with tomato. It was all very good, and the best part is, none of it made my stomach upset.
We were unable to find cream for coffee at a market so this morning my perfect husband went to the corner Starbucks and here I sit, looking at the Bosphorus drinking the best Starbucks coffee I have ever had. [Usually hate their coffee.]
There are mosques everywhere. Just as many mosques as there were Catholic churches in Spain. For some reason, though we are just outside Taksim Square, a very busy place, I am hearing roosters crowing. And then of course, since we are so close to the Bosphorus, there are constant sea bird calls intermingled with the horns of the shipping traffic.
Hope to see a bunch of stuff today!
*susan*
ps. Is this BedoDD wedding day?
0 -
Susan, that was quite a sample plate. Sounds wonderful. So glad your stomach is behaving.
I believe today is wedding day. Wishing Bedo and her daughter all the best!
Carole, hope your pain is still at bay. I love "food fairies". Good friends indeed.
We are off to the Cardinal baseball game with friends today, so it's ballpark food for us. We'll probably stop at a local steakhouse for dinner. I haven't been to a day game in many years. Of course the forecast calls for rain so I'll have to schlep a jacket with me. I hope they play better than they did last night.
0 -
Susan, that sounds like enormous amount of food.
3 inches of rain yesterday and last night. My challenge of the day--washing my hair in the sink and taking washcloth bath.
Probably another day on the nerve block. Still numb with no pain. PBS cooking shows today on TV. Things could be much worse

I don't use any salad dressing just use medium chunky salsa and a dollop of sour cream mixed together to make a dressing. Veggies are shredded lettuce (I don't bother buying it in the bags as I can make it that way in a couple of minutes and much much cheaper), fresh diced tomatoes and onion and sliced black olives. Taco meat mixed with refried beans, shredded mexican cheese and crumpled tortilla chips or cheap taco shells top it all off. I've gone to mexican restaurants and ordered a taco salad and have been very much disappointed with what I got there versus what I can make at home for a fraction of the price.
Tonight is going to be lamb (with some beef thrown in for some fat) burgers, tzatziki sauce, slice of feta cheese and a fried egg on top. Had it at a hole in the wall place shown on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives in Chicago so figured I'd try it at home. Have had the lamb chops in the freezer for a while and DH isn't fond of lamb that way but he does like gyros.
Special K - have fun at MacDill, used to be stationed there and lived in the Tampa area for almost 15 years. Miss my friends, beaches, restaurants, etc etc etc ... maybe after my NSBMX, reconstruction and such are done we'll make it down there again.

Tempy, you will fit in here perfectly. Glad you found us. Looking forward to learning some things from you.
Watched ATK today and learned how to go to enormous trouble to make hamburgers and sweet potato fries. Won't be using those recipes.
Happy Saturday. Hope Susan is having a delightful day

Carole, I am so happy that your friends are nurturing you well! Your self care efforts sound really challenging....not sure how well I'd be able to wash hair or do a "sponge bath" on one foot! Good luck!
Am hoping for Bedo that the local forecasted scattered showers choose spots away from her DD's wedding!
Susan, you are such a lovely writer turned "travelogist". Tonight we are seeing our friends who just returned from Spain, so will be thinking of you. So far Istanbul sounds sooo interesting.
This week has been a fast moving blur....
Last Sat grands and co arrived. They actually called from the road before 6PM and asked us to meet them at our local Bertucci's. We did.....and it was so exciting to see everyone. The enthusiastic greetings from the lively grands were so sweet! Then the dinner experience was hair-raising! DDIL had called ahead, (warning them?!) but the restaurant placed us at a table just outside the kitchen in the server path. OY!!! We are not used to managing really active pre-schoolers (little fast gear motor machines!) in a busy restaurant. DS1 and DDIL were busy wanting to chat with us, so my head was spinning.....especially after an empty kid plate went flying off the table, crashing on the floor. I almost died! Fortunately no one was hurt....including the people at nearby tables! The staff took a nano second to clear the broken pieces, so I guess they were not as shocked as I. Yikes! I barely recall what I ate, but it was some not very good fish in tomato sauce.
We arrived home and the kids (who have not been to our house for over a year, a large percentage of their young lives) immediately enjoyed exploring every nook and cranny! Our house must be like Arsenic and Old Lace to them since it is pretty traditional and theirs is ultra modern. So there was lots for them to explore! After they left, we kept finding little items in odd places.

Sunday, we had a plan to eat at Legal Seafood Longwharf. After breakfast and backyard ball play, chalk writing on the flagstone, and balsa wood airplane flying, we piled into DS1's Tesla, headed into Boston and pursued our first task to find a charging station. Fortunately, a hotel parking garage near our destination had an open charging spot. Not sure I would be so good at this electric car management thing. This is the first time they took a long trip in it....with the kids! So we left the car and walked to Long Wharf. It was a GORGEOUS DAY! We walked (and ran as the kids sped up!) along the waterfront and throughout Quincy Market all afternoon, after lunch. It was great fun!!
So Legal Seafood was smarter than Bertucci's when they saw us coming. Popped us into a giant booth with tall sides....sort of like a family playpen. Perfect! I was able to relax a bit and enjoy our meal. I'll post a pic of the playpen arrangement. My scallops with asparagus and couscous was delicious. I learned that both DS1 and DDIL are now fully vegetarian.....so they had a rice/veggie dish each. DH had a fish stew. The kids had fish....I'm glad that they do not have to be vegetarians too, yet. They have always been fed very healthy adult food.
After our relatively "uneventful" lunch, (phew!) we headed out to explore the happenings on the waterfront and it was lively and fun. The kids had room to move and little DGD found a zillion structures that she could turn into gym equipment. She is a darling force and really needs to get into a gymnastics class. Her brother (4) is adorably protective of her in public and always holds her hand....amazingly she complies. We rode the nearby carousel, watched street performers, enjoyed some frozen yogurt at Quincy Market and DGD was in heaven chasing birds there. I was the hawk watching her since she is way too friendly and curious at 2 1/2 and would follow anything that looked interesting. I saw a man taking pix of random kids when we were watching the seals play, and he stopped when he noticed me look at him...in time for him NOT to get a shot of my grands. Then he put his phone in his pocket and walked off. I may be too jaded, but it scared me!
We headed home after our waterfront fun, had some snacks, played in the backyard, they packed up, and off they went! It was a packed 23 hours!! I am so happy they came. Our visits go so much better when they include just us. Once the entire grandparent set is around it is chaos. So this worked out perfectly for everyone.....DDIL's parents got to spend the weekend in NYC which they love. All good!
Sunday night, DH and I collapsed! Happy and exhausted. Must admit, we are old! Feeling the seventy years I turn next month!
Monday AM I had my last allergy testing....Fall....yikes! Allergic to everything and my arm was swollen for days. Stretching class that afternoon was a stretch!!
Tuesday had my appt for getting my new orthotic at my old PT place. Sadly I learned that my PT guy is moving to another facility closer to his home. Since I'm sure I will be needing those services again someday given my joint issues, I was sad to learn that. But the clinic is a good one and I like the other therapists there, so it will be fine.
After orthotic pick up,I had my mammogram appt. Which took forever and I was the last person there. All's well that ends well. I think I already wrote that we went to Juniper that night. I was spent!
Wed I crashed for the day and rallied just enough to marinate salmon and asparagus for dinner. DH grilled them.
Thursday I shopped at my favorite Frugal Fannie's for summer casual clothes, then met my old office mate for dinner at Not Your Avg Joes and had scallops on a rosemary skewer. Lots of seafood this week.
Yesterday after my yearly derm appt., spent a long time at the gym so I could rationalize making and enjoying veggie pizza for dinner. I was actually dying to cook!
Since I stopped at WF for veggies, I picked up their pizza dough to make things quicker. Definitely prefer my own dough! But the toppings were great...red onion, garlic, red peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, chopped sun dried tomatoes, and......ta da....sauteed kale! Hope I didn't ruin the image with that!
Totally delish! Made a quick romaine, red onion, and grape tomato salad with balsamic to go with the pizza.Tonight we are going out again...dinner with friends before the local concert. Going to a sushi restaurant that DH assures me will have sonething I can order. I got very sick after my first foray into sushi, so like to avoid it. Since I've eaten well all week, I can survive fine with whatever they offer non sushi eaters!
Sorry to take so much space......I'm picturing sleepy readers!

Pix next....

Carole, I also love to cook creole/cajun. Was recently in New Orleans for my 6th trip (DH's first) - made a trip down for our first wedding anniversary before I had the biopsy/Lx. Figured one last trip before possibly bad news.
I love the website southyourmouth.com . Great great recipes there and usually pretty easy.

Pix from Mother's Day excursion...

And a good time was had by all......
Oh, and Welcome Tempy!

Lacey - great pictures. Thanks for sharing. Oh doesn't Susan's first night in Istanbul sound magical. Nance - have fun at the BB game. Carole - good luck w/your hair washing project. I don't know if I've ever been to a beauty salon for just a wash, but I might succumb in your circumstances.
Bedo - we are all so excited about this wedding. Hope everything is going well.
I'm trying to decide what to do w/the leftover rotissarie chicken I froze last week. It will either be Rao's marinara with artichoke hearts added & maybe black olives on some kind of pasta or Green Chili stew w/black beans added on rice. Just haven't made up my mind what my taste buds are telling me for today - other than watermelon for lunch.

Minus one of my best friends just happens to be a Rao of the Rao's family. Best praise I ever had from one of them was my homemade gnocchi. Said it was light as a pillow just as it should be.
Lacey looks like the two were well worn out and beyond ready for a nap. Looks like you had a great time.
0 -
Tempy - how interesting. Several of the "REAL" cooks on this site have said they use Rao's for emergencies when they can't make their own gravy. It will be my first time to try it.
0 -
Minus - It's pretty darned tasty and a great substitute for when you can't make your own. I tried to get one of the recipes out of one of them but they're all very hush hush about it.

We spent the day learning the metro system, going to Sultanahmet where we toured the Blue Mosque and went to the Museum of Turkish and Islamic art.
Tonight we headed out planning to get Borak at the Borak Master. Well, either they had their shutters down so that the sign was invisible, or they no longer exist. Adjustments were made and we bought two shwarma wraps from a place that browns the meat well on the upright rotisserie. Then to the baklava store and back to the apartment to have an indoor picnic. [This is a country that consumes HUGE amounts of vegetables. Where are they?]
Pictures of the Mosque, which is stunning, and the baklava, also stunning! And a picture of the view from our balcony. It looks grayer than real life, but it is the best I could do.

Lacey, enjoyed the recap of Mother's Day visit. Adorable children. Good thing for parents to be young.
Tempy, will have to visit that web site. Would love to sample your gnocchi.
Travel envy after seeing Susan's photos and reading post.
Would use Rao more often if price wasn't so high

Stunning pix, Susan! Thank you, thank you for sharing! As you may recall, I never had internet service in the hills of Tuscany, so never got my pix out while there, and I am so bad at doing it later....as you might recall!
Weather is holding up here, so far, so I am guessing that all is going well for the Bedo family wedding!

Haha, Tempy, I can't blame the Raos for keeping their recipe a secret. Why heavens, you'd be sharing it on our site! LOL
And I'm glad to hear that your gnocchi is as it should be...pillow light! I ordered some at a supposedly good Italian restaurant recently and was horrofied at the leaden product! Thump in your tummy! I grew up with my mom's family making them, and they were nice and light. They used potatoes. Sadly I do not have the recipe....actually just looked in the recipe box that was my mother's and it is one of the only things not there. I must check with my sister.
By the way, this week, Mario Battali made a timpano with tortellini and pesto, meatballs and a zillion other things, and it definitely surpassed the one my neighbor and I made this winter in terms of extra expanded interest. Implan to look up the recipe on The Chew website. We might have to try that one next winter unless it was a harbinger of the snow that was to befall us! I'd hope not to bring that on again.
Oh, one last pic...my favorite except for the glasses on DH...beyond photo shop capabilities, I suspect?

This was one of the only times that little one was still the whole day....as the carousel was giving her the movement! Ha!

Bedo....hope you enjoyed the wedding.
Susan, those pictures look awesome and the view from the balcony is amazing. Enjoy yourself.
Lacey, those pictures make me smile. I especially like the "out like a light" picture. The test daughters were like that....go at 900 miles per hour and then....click.....
Sharon made calzones last night and we had the left overs tonight. I'm also cooking another pork roast for lunch meat for the rest of the week.
.
Yesterday DD and I scored at the junkyard. We found a 1992 Volvo 940 in near perfect condition and with all the parts still in place. I don't know why someone would have put it in the junkyard other than "it cost too much to fix" or "something broke and the parts to fix it weren't available". Anyway, it had all the parts we needed. So, we are progressing along. We're in the middle of car air conditioning work right now. Next will be some emission control stuff and finally installing the headlights, turn signals, grill and bumper. If all goes well, it should only require a few more hours of work to finish.
At the junkyard, I pointed out a car to DD where I was certain someone in the car had been killed. The yard employees confirmed my suspicions.
I hope DD keeps that image in mind when she drives.

Wow, Eric, this is quite an education your DD is getting!
Minus, what did you decide to make last night? Both options sounded good to me.
Yes, Bedo, when you've recovered tell us how it went! I recall the pix are a challenge.

Last night at the sushi restaurant, I found a few items to eat.....a clear broth seafood soup, pan fried pork raviolis, and mashed butternut squash. Everyone else enjoyed their sushi selections. I enjoyed how pretty the sushi arrangements looked on the oblong plates.

Today we ate brunch with DS2 and DGF at a place called Gaslight in Boston's South End (newly called the SOWA district). I ordered a spinach, feta omelet....not too special, and came with McDonald style french fries. Odd, but obscenely good. The SOWA street fair was on, so we cruised around it checking out the food trucks, produce stands and craft sellers. An unusual truck was a knife sharpening one. They also sold knives and both DH and DS2 bought one. Now I need to have the muslin wrap and peroxide close to the kitchen counter. That big guy is frighteningly sharp!!
Last evening the performance we attended was an orchestra from Berkelee College of Music that specializes in playing musical scores for movies....and what they played last night was the score for the original silent film of Phantom of The Opera. It was AMAZING!!!! DH was particularly enthralled with how they got to expand the sound of a basic keyboard to mimic that of a huge powerfulchurch organ. It was quite the show!

I am wore out just reading about Lacey and Susan's adventures. Envious, but wore out.
Gotta check out the south in your mouth site.
Carole, hope your foot is healing and BEDO can't wait to see pics (please) and hear about the wedding.
Having more Dad adventures with his leg and he has fell 3 times in less than 3 weeks.....
Spent yesterday at our "third Sunday market" over 450 antique and craft dealers are set up at our fairgrounds. Showed huge restraint by only purchased three items, A plant mister a small little bench for the porch, and a thread box.
Dinner was meatloaf with potatoes and the last of the rhubarb pie. I have ratatouille that I love on spaghetti instead of sauce. and rest of meatloaf will likely be sandwiches for lunch.

Lacey, oh how I love a sharp knife. Makes prep work sooo much easier.
Last night I cooked a small pork butt in the pressure cooker. Seasoned it with Chinese 5 spice, s and p. I threw in some sezchuan peppercorns with the water/chicken broth combo. After it was done, I sliced and stir fried it with onions, made a thin gravy with cornstarch and served it over homemade (not by me) egg noodles. Pretty tasty. I forget how much I like cooking in the pressure cooker. I've not tried it with beans, but on Susan's recommendation, I believe that will be my next foray into pressure cooking.
I desperately need a trip to the grocery today. I'm out of most vegetables.
The garden is progressing nicely, although I have a couple of tomato plants that are looking weak. I'll be keeping my eye on them. We've had 4 inches or more of rain this week and they certainly aren't going to like the night temps in the 40s this week. What's up with that?
We saw the cutest thing yesterday. One of our pregnant does had her baby and brought it into our back yard (outside the fence). It must have just been born because it was still wobbly. It was about the smallest fawn I've ever seen. They make me crazy but they sure are cute when they're little.
Not sure what's for dinner. Depends on what the store has to offer.
Carole, hope your foot is progressing. Love the Turkey and Grand pictures! Hoping for wedding pictures too.

Red, I'm sorry about your dad, I know just what you mean. My dad won't even tell me every time he falls. Worries me to death.
0 -
Yikes, I remember the worries about parental falls. We did get my mother one of those "alert systems" to wear so she could access help if needed, but she would not always wear it. Sending good balance wishes to both of your dads. Never an easy time.....
Nance, I was thinking of you when we bought the knife.

By the way, when ordering brunch yesterday, my eyes landed on an offering that included kale and carmelized onions topped with poached eggs. Well.....My impulse was to order it until I remembered that I eat that regularly at home if DH is out. Well, I was amused (and pleased) to see DH order that dish and totally enjoy it. So guess what he'll be having at home probably once a week!

This is the completion of my family photos documenting us having eaten (of course!) for (belated) MoDay...with DS2 and DGF yesterday:

Nance, love hearing about the newborn fawn sighting! That would be a fun pic to post. I tried to get some pix of our (one!) hummer, but he perches in the magnolia tree, so the pix are a Where's Waldo exercise.
0 -
I will try to get a pic of the fawn but it seems they're never close enough to get a decent picture with my phone. I'll keep trying though.
Dinner is going to be grilled pineapple and ham steak and a tomato cucumber salad.

Dinner tonight is easy pasta with meat sauce. Have to work tonight (6:30pm to 7am) and have been up since 7:30am trying to take care of stuffs. No rest for me today but off tomorrow for one day. Luckily DH is home today so he's been able to help.

All is going well with the foot. It was unwrapped today at the dr.'s office and I was glad to see that the size was almost normal. I have permission to put some weight on the foot but still must keep it propped up when sitting. I will post a pic from my cell phone.
DH has a beef stew in progress for dinner tonight. This menu is entirely his decision. He bought the beef cubes on one of his trips out the last couple of days.
I, too, will check out the south in your mouth web site.

Have 2 pkgs of pork ribs thawing. No idea if they're boneless, but I don't think they are. They were in the day old bin at Albertsons last week. Going in the oven to slow/low cook with BBQ. Also have the makings for Carole's pineapple slaw. DH voted for both of these over stir fry. Go figure - men lol. Other than that we have been finishing off the salsa chicken. I think I'll have the last shortly for lunch.
Nancy I don't think I could even find a camera if I wanted to. Mine on my dinky candybar phone is sufficient to get an idea of something minus details lol. I used it last year to take pics of some furniture to show DH. That's about all it's good for.
Kale is for sure mainstream. Saw a Lean Cuisine with it in it.
One look at the "south your mouth" website has me drooling. And you can drool over her Facebook page too.
DD is coming out Friday. She is burning more vacation time - off Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon - Memorial Day. She won't be able to say long because of her cats. If she spends Sat. night too I will be surprised. She TaDa paid off her car loan 2 years early. Wants to put the title in our safety deposit box. She is a signer on it but no key. Will have to find something to make. Thinking of chicken tetrazzini. Anyone have a good recipe?
Foot looks good Carole. Sounds like you are making great progress.

What a day!
Our cousins live a completely different life than we do. So far we have counted 13 full time staff! And there is a boat. They bought a boat which took us on a private tour of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus all the way up to the Black Sea! We stopped for a lunch of yogurt and "toast" which is bread with cheese inside. Ended the day in a 6th floor restaurant with views of the Golden Horn looking over to the Blue Mosque eating the most amazing meze and fresh grilled fish. Totally amazing!
I will try to post some photos tomorrow, but really, don't know if any of them came out.
Chicken [Turkey] tetrazzini... Joy of Cooking recipe which is actually three recipes. Only version of this dish that I will eat. I like to use a mixture of mushrooms to make it interesting. Highly recommend.
