So...whats for dinner?

Oh, Nance....Thank you! So mine is less interesting without the char and the wonderful looking bread, (don't tell my DH it can be served that way!;) but definitely happy to see J.Kenji's version of my fave mini dinner! I also like my addition of garlic, onions and red bell pepper. But seeing that picture come up made my heart do a little smile!
Special, as others have said.....beautifully inviting space you have created there. Lovely!
You get things done!

Bedo, sweet pic....not the pumpkin! Ha! That is pretty powerful, tho!
Last night, I went weird vegetarian again.....mashed butternut squash with a bit of maple syrup, to go with a sauté of broccoli rabe with garlic, onion and mushrooms, and a piece of naan. It was a particularly bitter rabe, so I was glad to have the sweetness of the squash. Tonight DH graces the dinner table again, (loved that cartoon, Nance) so I am making a garden salad to go with stuffed portobello mushrooms (stuffing yet to be determined), and maybe the ravs that are in the fridge. Tho after his eating "conference food" for two days, I should leave those out.
So many real estate transactions going on here....today our DS2 signs P+S. We are seeing him and DGF at football game tomorrow, then all heading back to Savin Hill to see the new condo and neighborhood, followed by having his "birthday dinner" near there. We then return to Southie to pick up the pooch to keep him here through their current condo's Open House tomorrow while they run in a charity (obstacle?) race. Too much going on for them! IMHO
Not sure if I ever posted granddog's pic...

I've dry-brined a turkey breast to fix today. DH insists on dressing (of course) so he will have that and I will have baked corn. The main reason for fixing this rather large turkey breast is to have leftovers for sandwiches. Last week I made buns so that should be good combo. I'm also making a couple of mini pies - spicy pumpkin for me and peach for DH.
Tomorrow is Geezer Brigade day to load the truck to move DH's sister and her husband to North Carolina. It will be bittersweet and nostalgic (not to mention hard work), considering their poor health. No doubt we will have dinner with the fam tomorrow.

Red, as a person who is sufficating from books in every corner of this house, I say....RESIST!!! Or maybe just ONE.....;)

Awwwwww, so cute!!
My granddog is a holy terror, sadly and much to my great disappointment. She is untrainable (and there are not many dogs that I believe are untrainable), hyper, spastic, crazy and difficult to be around. The kids adopted her from the Animal Protective Association when she was a previously failed adoption. It was abundantly clear why she was returned, although for some reason they couldn't see it. It may have been better if they had worked at it a little harder when she was a pup but they didn't. So now they have a dog that is not much fun and because of that, she gets ignored a lot. As Elizabeth Woodhouse said "I can train any dog in 5 minutes. It's training the owner that takes longer."

Red My granddog is mainly poodle, but her dad was a traveling salesman we think-she came from the poundin Auburn Alabama-Go Auburn! My library has no good books, or there is too long a wait. Sometimes I break down. Back away from the books....!
Lacey, have you thought about having your granddog be a therapy dog? His (?) look is very thoughtful-like a Psychiatrist would give.I would tell him anything. How do you make portabello mushrooms without a bun or other starch?
Auntie, I had a dog like that-1/2 great dane and 1/2 blue tick, "Austin" he lived for 14 years a very long time for that large a dog. The only thing he ever listened to was his nose. And he Howled! He would go over to the fridge and paw it to see what was inside and I would give in because he had all the time in the world.

This is a nightmare!!! BoA stopped the wire transfer. The pat answer "fraud" concerns. Five hours after the request was made, the money is finally moved, but the Registry closes in 20 minutes. Oh my goodness!!!! Such a total nightmare. Fingers crossed my fellow eaters!

Oh Susan, everything crossed for a successful transaction! Sheesh!

So good to have such a frustrating transaction completed!!!
Red - I'm a serious book person, and finally gave up. I kept all my "how-to" books (like cookbooks and glass fusing, etc), and any books my husband wanted to keep (the man isn't much of a reader, so how could I deny him his paltry few???), the sum total of his and my "real" books filled two closets of bookshelves. All the other books went to the GoodWill. Now I have my kindle and if a book doesn't come in an e-reader format, it doesn't get a home.

Red - dying to hear the results of the book sale. I can't pass up going & I can't pass up buying. Just ordered books for Christmas presents. I do have a Kindle, but I prefer to hold a real book in my hand - so yes I'm drowning in books too. I started a project 3 years ago to get rid of books I'm never going to read again so I could move one of the floor to ceiling bookcases that backs up to the guest bathroom tub access. Original plan was to re-do shower. I probably gave away 200 books, but it turned out I started re-reading many of the others & decided I wanted to keep them to read again when I'm 80. It would be embarrassing to count the books I have, but maybe instructional. Or frightening.
Garden - glad to see you around more.
Susan - WOO HOO!!. I bet this will be the absolutely last time you'll want to discuss houses. Just tell your daughter they have to live there for the rest of their lives.
Nance - I've heard of a number of dogs on tranquilizers. Have they considered that? My granddog is also a rescue dog w/lots of emotional & physical issues, but my son has been resolute about who is boss. The turkey sounds just about right for comfort food.
Lacey - Hope you have fun with the kids. Good luck with the dog sitting.

Oops Bedo - forgot to say that it was fun to see your granddog. Are you really on vacation? My brother used to have a mnemonic plaque for the 7 deadly sins. It was nailed outside his front door. I'll have to think about what his said, but I do know that I don't like wrath changed to anger (saw a funny snippet about that - "The Grapes of Anger") or avarice changed to greed.
Wrath, Avarice, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth, Pride, Lust

Book sale was a bust..... I bought one cookbook from one of the larger churches here in m y hometown and a unopened 2 disc "lullaby" CD set---midnight sonata, claire de lune, etc. I was proud of me. It is a fund raiser to provide benefits for people who are down and out, but the sale was pretty down and out today........and I was there when they opened.... kidn of sad.
Just home from having Dad to the café for the all you can eat Friday Walleye..... he "skipped" lunch so he could pig out... and he ate 3 huge pieces of fish, a pile of green beans and a helping of coleslaw and a soda....brought the rolls home. I had the fried chicken, which was excellent.....

Susan, I'm glad it went through,Even though it was hair raising!
Special, that's a lovely outdoor space.
Red, i have trouble leaving books at sales. LOL
Bedo cute grand dog.
Garden, i have my Sony with 500 books in it so far. I have the bad habit of visiting the Kobo bookstore too often. WI I makes it way to easy to buy books whenever I want. LOL
Lacey, i hope you are having fun with the kids and dogs!
Nance, just curious if you are gonna have to cook a turkey for Thanksgiving too?
And if I haven't mentioned you it only means that your on the previous page and I didn't want to lose my post while I checked it out! LOL.
My DH came home. I helped him unpack a few things and then we went out for a good fish fry. Good whitefish. I had mine with the German Potato Salad. Yum.
Much love

Yeah Susan!
All you readers, I'm going to face the librarian today and see what the fine is for my unreturned books. I recently read " A walk in the woods" but my all time favorite was Cutting for Stone. But maybe I'll head over to the book thread
Minus, yes I am on a 4 day vacation- we finished an project that management got themselves into and I'm trying to take some days, as I can only carry over 40 hours into the new year.
I have decided to stop being everyone's solution after giving out $10000s of dollars to family and working over time for the company and answering their questions on my day off. My daughter is married now and brother on SS. Landlords raise the rent every time I ask for something to be fixed-like the door with holes in it. Landlords raised the rent for a 2d time this year after repairing- the door, in essence making me pay for it- I told them, OK I'll look at apartments-turned out they said never mind their Squatter son was the issue-he wouldn't leave or pay rent on one of their condos ."we don't want to lose you My boss texted me yesterday morning with a question and I answered with a single word. "yes" then added "going hiking in the mountains will be off the grid until Monday. A wee lie. If I'm "on call" that's fine but pay me on call pay. Sorry. Rant. Finishing coffee.
I am going to make hummus for carrot sticks and celery for work Monday, and 2 big pots of the worlds best rosemary and split pea soup-one to give to a friend today.
Then go online for more hanging glass planters. I'm making them for everyone for presents with air plants and sea glass and a few other things.
Going out with friends, seeing DD tomorrow. Ended 6 year sometime next year relationship. He is a dear but it was time.
Oh, and getting my Atlanta house ready to sell in the summer to get ready to retire-so the real estate saga will return.

Wow, you've got a lot going on there Bedo! I loved Cutting for Stone too and it's my DSIL'S favorite as well.
Monica, yep I'll be fixing a whole bird the Saturday after. It's a tradition and DH's favorite holiday.
We're off to move my SIL. Hope none of the geezers hurt themselves.

Pumpkin in the oven...for pumpkin pie..
You are busy Bedo. That's good you got/forced/made some vacation time....I think most workplaces today try to suck people dry and that 2/3 of the rush is created internally by the company. Split Pea-Rosemary soup?????
Moon, what I do is open another browser tab that also shows BCO. That way I can type in one and move around in the other window.
Susan, relaxation time..... :-)
As for books. Let me see. I much prefer books with paper. The only rooms with no bookcases are the bathrooms. And, I probably have books in there is the humidity wasn't so high.
I'm on the front lines of the highest of high tech, yet I'm very comfortable with old tech. Everyone says the new stuff is faster, better, easier...but sometimes it's not.

Eric,
The best ever. And it freezes well.
I think your family would like it.

Yum Bedo. Thanks. It's cold & rainy here so almost soup weather. Well cold for Houston - 63 degrees high today. Unfortunately I have other plans or I'd make the soup tomorrow. My cousin from AZ is back in town to take her 40 year old daughter to MD Anderson again for more scans & to discuss further treatment or maybe upcoming hospice. They stay at the hospital's connecting patient hotel. Tomorrow we're going to the Museum of Natural Science to see a wonderful Faberge exhibit, and then I'll take them to eat somewhere by the medical center depending on her energy level. I'll report on the food tomorrow.

So odd that I am still not sleeping. I thought once we passed along a substantial portion of our retirement accounts to a lawyer, I would sleep like a baby. Nope. Last night I woke up worried about a small comment made at closing: that it is hard to insure an empty house! Yikes! We have an empty house! So the kids are over there now, putting up some fabric over the windows, hanging shower curtains, etc so that they can move in a bed, and spend a couple of nights a week there. I will be on cat duty on those nights. The girl-child has a list of kitchen essentials and she will pack those up to take over. What a gift it is that her kitchen stuff is still all in boxes since she only unpacked a few special items to move into my kitchen. My other worry last night was the new floor plan for the first floor half bath. Now that I have plans, it was clear my initial thought was not a good one. Today's plan is much better!
Bedo, I have pulled that pea soup recipe into pepper plate. I never considered rosemary in a split pea soup, but I am game and willing to try. My rosemary plants need to be trimmed for the winter. Perfect excuse to hack away!
Moon, is a Friday fish fry still a tradition in your area? Once upon a time, churches would have fish fries here on Friday to raise money, but somehow that tradition has faded. Well, it faded pretty quickly after the Catholic church softened their fish on Friday stance. Turns out, Catholics were much happier eating meat. And it always seems that Red is eating walleye with her dad on Fridays, so another place that continues this tradition.
Minus, I just laughed out loud as you told your book clearing story. Happens to me every single time.
Tonight we are eating a turkey stew [magic freezer gift] and I am making some cheddar cheese and chive buttermilk biscuits. New recipe which always makes me nervous. This recipe doesn't include rolling or cutting so how good can it be? I am going to make a big bunch of frozen English peas because that is what I want!
Sorry I didn't respond to everyone.... my brain is mush about now.

bedo - Wow! Busy! Awesome lap dog!
auntie - the Geezer Brigade made me laugh again! Hope all went well.

You all will love this over protective DIL story. She will NOT leave my granddog with a vet or a kennel or a pet hotel or even a neighbor. So they haven't taken a vacation in several years anywhere that the dog can not go. Oh yes, dog hates water (some trauma from a pre-rescue life) so the beach is out, & lakes & canoeing, & puddles, & rain, etc. I asked my son if I came out to CA & stayed at their house, they might be able to get away for a couple of days. Nope - DIL would probably be uncomfortable leaving me alone with my granddog. Eeks. Wonder how I was able to raise the man that she loves?

Well as it turns out, it's turkey sandwiches for dinner. We had a huge lunch with the fam and neither of us is very hungry.
Tomorrow is the big pasta/sauce making, which is expected to produce lasagna for dinner. I also need to roast the turkey carcass for stock and soup. I may try Susan's overnight method. The next few days are going to be chilly so turkey soup with some fresh noodles should be good.

auntie, Do you have a good pasta sauce recipe you would share?

Sunshine, definitely!

Oh, thank you! Looks easy too!

It is, but it's best with the best tomatoes you can find, preferably San Marzano but any good Italian plum will do.

Tonight was Hungarian Sausage at the American Hungarian Club.

Went to Costco yesterday and got one of their chickens. Today hubby made it into chicken Dijon and had it over rice. Simple and good and best of all, I didn''t have to cook.
