So...whats for dinner?

Special - fantastic news. Glad it was a positive experience, except for the wait time.
Eric - love that your Mom was one of the early Girl Scouts.
Windows done. A very positive experience w/professional workers. They moved all the furniture away from the windows, laid tarps and vacuumed before they moved the furniture back. I always feel like I'm in the way when I have people working in the house but I'm not about to leave. I just sat in the kitchen and sorted through tons of piles of papers. So dinner was Stauffer's mac & cheese.

Yay Special....and yay Minus...two very different and important tasks accomplished! Hoping you will rest a bit, Special, and let others take care of you for a change....:)
Just threw together a Trader Joe's pumpkin bread mix for a neighbor whose elderly father just died. It was my last of three boxes...and I called Trader's to see if they have any more...nada! Gone for the season.
Too bad, since this is a very quick thing to make for someone and a decent quality for a boxed mix. I know lots of people who could use a little treat like this and little time to do scratch baking....especially since I am not an experienced scratch baker like our friend Nance! Oh well.....0 -
Lacey, the gingerbread is pretty good.

Susan I totally agree with Lacey. How maddening and rude.
Special So glad things went well.
I seem to be asked out a bit, one 20 years younger than I? But we have a lot in common, Who cares, I have no plans to be married again.
For dinner more egg drop soup, still recovering from pneumonia almost over and Mango bubble tea.
Today mammo, had to take more views, calcifications need recheck in 6 months. They really know how to stress you out with the sad faces and asking for more views taking you into the special room for no good reason.
Things are good. Changing my schedule to mon tues off weds then thurs and friday
I fell asleep at 5pm and now am awake! :O
I hope you are all ready for a good weekend.

Last night had a great time at our neighborhood restaurant’s monthly wine-tasting/buffet. Best were a Ch. Cazeneuve Champagne and a Handley Pinot Noir. And among other stuff, there was prime rib and the juiciest turkey breast I’ve ever had. Tonight, getting ready for my trip, popped into Mariano’s and found their BBQ had a special on full racks of St. Louis ribs: $10! Picked up some sauteed asparagus (and couscous for DS) to round things out. Had a couple oz. of an old vine Zin (considering it was boxed, it was pretty darn good).
Gonna lay low for awhile--we leave tomorrow and our internet coverage will be spotty on the high seas (and probably an arm and a leg while at our hotel in Rome). Catch you on the flip side--and bon appetit!

Have a wonderful trip, ChiSandy!
Bedo, glad you are recovering...pneumonia can really knock you out! I'm actually getting the new pneumonia vaccine this week.

Bedo - I say go for it! A number of years ago I ordered a book by Lois Banner called "In Full Flower: Aging Women, Power & Sexuality". It turned out to be a serious textbook for women's studies and I couldn't get into it. Just started again and I think I can be more focused now. From the back cover "...if such partnerships (relationships with younger men) were once laughable and scandalous, why are they increasingly commonplace?...This vastly learned & magnificently iconoclastic book is a fresh examination of the social and sexual status of aging women - and in particular the way that status has shaped their relationships with younger men." Not to say you're aging my dear. Of course we're all following Peter Pan and will never grow old. I'll report back.
Sandy - hope you have a great trip. BTW, I love the wine pairings with the food reports.
Susan - thinking of you burning the candle at both ends.

On a sad note, for those of you who remember Debbie from Oregon, she just posted on Facebook that she has entered hospice. She has been struggling mightily with lung issues over the past two years and is in Palm Springs with her husband who has been devotedly caring for her. She decided this week since her oxygen is so very low to take her doctors' advice and enter hospice where she can be comfortable. She always managed to inject humor in her posts, and she also managed to do that in the one in which she shared this sad news. Wishing peace and comfort for Debbie.....

Oh no Lacey. I'm so sorry to hear that she has continued to decline. I was thinking about Debbie & Chuck the other day. I hope the move to Palm Springs means she has family around and Chuck's health issues are resolved. She was indeed such a fun lady. If you have a mailing address, please PM me. If not, will you please send her hugs from Minus when you next go on Facebook.

lacey - that is sad news but thanks for letting us know - she is a character and I am hopeful that making this move brings her peace.

So sorry to hear about Debbie from OR, but hopefully hospice will help make her comfortable.
Those of you who ever fly internationally from O'Hare: the Air France lounge is only $30 for a day pass (50 per couple) if flying economy--free for biz or 1st. All snacks & drinks are free. Kicking back enjoying a Mumm's Cordon Rouge champagne with cheeses. They have pastries too, but trying to keep it lo-carb at least till we board our flight. Had a double shot cappuccino too!
Our internet will be iffy and pricey once we get to Amsterdam, till we get back Stateside on the 22d. So if you don't hear from me, that's why

I am so sorry to hear about Debbie. Always hard to know when to make that decision. Best to her.
Today was incredibly full.... All four of us headed out this morning at 8:30 to visit the stone warehouses. As you may recall, they went to the small one last week and chose a quartzite called SuperWhite. Mr. 02143 and I didn't love it at all. The kids did. I was dreading this trip to be honest. If the girl and I had complete meltdowns at the same time it would not be easy. So we arrived at this huge warehouse with a very fancy entrance. Ron took us all over this HUGE warehouse and I was so relieved that as we reviewed slabs, we agreed a lot. I preferred the most traditional marbles, while the girl preferred slabs with more veining. I preferred very white and she preferred slabs with lots of grey. We looked at granite, marble, and quartzite and in the event we chose a fairly grey Carrara marble that we all think is beautiful. We have chosen the cabinet custom colors from the Benjamin Moore deck.
Then it was off to Natick to look at, of all things, toilets at the Kohler store. When did toilets all get so high? We are short people. We like to have our feet on the floor while using a toilet. The Kohler toilets were of no interest but the kitchen sinks and faucets were fabulous! I think we have selected both of those. We stopped for some lunch at Bertuccis [not so many options in the 'burbs] before finishing our day checking out Toto toilets. This store was so busy there was no way we would see our salesman [I bought a shower kit from them last week so have a salesman] and we were all fading quickly. Came home and I fell asleep for 1 1/2 hrs!
We have cabinets and countertops!!!! Now, I sure hope that we can afford the countertops.
*susan*
p.s. not sure dinner will happen tonight after our carb-ey lunch of rolls and pizzas. Oh, and the iceberg salad. :-)

Sad news about Debbie. Whenever I hear about someone going into hospice, it always triggers memories of my Mickey.
Well, I'm officially 55 years old. My brother came from Las Vegas to, as he put it, kill two birds with one stone...visiting mom for a day and taking me out to dinner for my birthday. Being one of two obligations to be handled as efficiently as possible, makes me ambivalent about the whole "event".

eric, happy birthday---you are cherished here maybe your brother should have said he got to double his pleasure!!!!!!

Happy Birthday Eric!!!!
Gonna be a glass half full kinda gal and state that your brother had double the pleasure in half the time. Heck, one of my sister's can't even manage a text message on my birthday. Can't pick your siblings, just how you respond to their idiosyncrasies.

eric - happy birthday!
susan - sounds like you are making great progress on the house!

So sorry to hear this about Debbie. Thank you so much for sharing this information Lacey.
Happy birthday Eric! You know what they say, heaven help you pick your friends because the devil picks your family lol!
Susan, whew! I want a nap just reading about your day.
I'm tired. We've cancelled our Christmas to NOLA and decided that we'll go next year instead. So today I've been busily doing all those things I so happily avoided doing last year. In addition to putting up a few decorations, I made a braided Italian loaf with sesame seeds, cuccidati and nut bars for Christmas munching, an oven cooked marinara for a lasagna next week and wrapped presents. DBIL and DSIL are coming for a two day visit on Wednesday so I'm trying to cook ahead a bit. I'll make some ricotta tomorrow.
I'm too tired to make dinner but I'm soldiering on with some pork chops I thawed, an oven roasted potato and some sauteed greens.

Eric - Happy Birthday wishes from me too. Maybe I'm a little cynical, but look at it this way - you got a free meal!!! We'll discuss brothers if I make it out there in April as planned. I told my brother (who I see every 15 years whether I need to or not) that I had to either borrow one of his cars or rent a car so I could go meet you.
Dinner was leftovers. Salad, 1/2 a baked potato, some green peas, two pieces of Potato/Rosemary bread.

Happy Birthday, Eric.
Enjoyed the wise words from Susan re: siblings/family. And happy for you Susan that you accomplished the kitchen purchases without any meltdowns! Sounds lovely.
We spent the afternoon at a mall (neither of us are born mall shoppers, and I have to hand it to DH for being a willing and patient companion) where we just about completed our gift purchasing. Glad it is over...all the high end stores make me nauseated. The fact that a few people we are buying for required entering a couple of those stores made me almost feel ill. But I guess our gift to those people is that we put our own values aside to do this for them. Weird perspective?
I had nothing at home that would make for a quick dinner so we ended up at a sports bar that was on the way home that I know has good sandwiches. So we watched the first half of the Celtics game there while I enjoyed a california grilled chicken club sandwich on multi grain bread, and DH had a cod ruben which he loved. Happy choices!
Tomorrow I will check to see if the marinating turkey legs that have been in the fridge for two days (!) are okay, and if so it will be dinner.

SpecialK, I'm glad your surgery went well, but the 5-hour wait is inexcusable. What if you showed up 5 hours late?
Sad news about Debbie. We haven't heard from her or from Deb in a long time.
ChiSandy, hope you have a delightful trip.
Nance, I was about to advise you to bring shorts and sleeveless blouses for your trip to NOLA at Christmas. I turned on the a/c yesterday, not so much because of the temperature, 75 degrees, but the humidity. I hear a lot about the Reveillon (sp?) dinners which are being served the entire month of December.
Susan, I'm enjoying hearing about the renovation project . How exciting for "the kid" to move into a wonderful new home.
Lacey, those children grow so fast, don't they? Will the birthday treats at the party be vegan?
Nothing exciting going on in the kitchen here. I cooked more greens yesterday, an enormous bundle I bought at the supermarket. I thought they were mustard greens but the little card said turnip greens. I cooked them with diced pickled pork and they were delicious eaten with cornbread cooked in an iron skillet.
This afternoon we're attending my favorite event of the Christmas season, the concert at St. Timothy's Methodist Church. The choir is wonderful and there are always symphony musicians as well.

Since my kitchen table group at least pretends to be enjoying the renovation saga, I thought you might like to see the color samples we chose for the cabinets and countertops. Our slab of marble is a bit different than this one, but the colors are the same. The distant grey will be the two rows of cabinets on the walls, while the windham grey will be the island cabinets. Our compromise, if I can call it that, is I would have selected a whiter stone, but I really think that this will be beautiful.

carole - the wait was tough, especially not being able to drink anything. I believe the issue had to do with equipment that was necessary for the surgery and my poor PS looked tired. After she marked me she grabbed some coffee before the surgery.
susan - the assorted grays look beautiful and classic - that will provide a lot of longevity for the design

I like the light colors.
Special, while you were waiting, hopefully everyone around was nice and not "chowing down" on coffee, doughnuts, etc., etc.
Off to do the Christmas lights.....

Debbie my hugs and love to you. I am so glad that we met on line and got to know you. I don't think that people realize how much laughter and joy they bring into the lives of people they haven't officially met. I hope that whoever is in contact with Debbie gives my love to her and her family. I am still with you and always will be. I wish I were closer. Sally

Taking advantage of free time (and free hotel internet) before turing in for the night. Waiting for our flight at O'Hare, we got into the Air France lounge: free Mumm's Cordon Rouge champagne. Changing planes in Amsterdam, we had oysters, gravlax, baby shrimp and smoked trout at Bubbles in Schipol Airport. DH had Sancerre; I had Taittinger Brut. Staying at Rome Airport Hilton (no taxi necessary!) and the put us in the Exec. Lounge--shrimp & baby greens salad, espresso, and Pinot Grigio. Free shuttle to downtown Rome--dropped us off at the edge of Campo Dei Fiore (old Jewish quarter). Went out to La Taverna del Ghetto for famous "Carciofi all Giudica" (whole, deep-fried but not battered or breaded artichokes). They even threw in a free glass of kosher Valpolicella!
And it was the last night of Hanukkah (hence the deep-fried stuff), but all the oil lamps (not candles) had burnt out. Took the following pic from our table looking out across the street. If this doesn't say "Coexist," nothing does!

Last week's grilled chicken turned into stock today. The results were 2 cups of stock, to which I milled 2 cups of tomatoes and 2 cups of water. I let this simmer with some thyme for half an hour to really cook the tomatoes. I sautéed some onion, carrots and garlic and threw this into the stock mixture and let that simmer for another half hour. Since I wanted a smooth soup tonight, I put all of this through the food mill. I then added some egg noodles to the stock to cook. I put the remaining chicken into each bowl in bite-sized pieces. For me, the soup was a tad too acidic given the mouth issues I am still having, but Mr. 02143 was thrilled.
The menorah vignette is lovely.

Chi Sandy---you know how to go someplace!!!! And I love the menorah pic.
Still in angst about not putting up my tree yet and still haven't figured out what to give my besty for Christmas.....I am not a good gift giver...I am quite generous, but not inspired.....They always know what to give me, and I never know what to give them-----
I just don't know what drug to ask for to blow these cobwebs away and get pastnot having any energy or motivation y........I've tried all the mind games suggested and they just distract, but don't correct.......AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Love, love, love the stone and color choices Susan.
Kentucky hot browns tonight with a small simple salad. DH tells me he's making root beer floats tonight (sugar free root beer and frozen yogurt.) I'm game!

I will be stopping by to check out an old Hobart K5 mixer from the early 1960s. The person selling it wants $125 for it, including four attachments and two bowls. If it's in good shape I'll be the owner of the granddaddy of the KitchenAid mixers. My retired neighbors (the ones that answered my cooking questions) had one and they showed me how to take care of the only two things likely to need attention--motor brushes and replacing the grease in the "power head"
Dinner tonight was a sort of breakfast at night....home made chorizo with a thinly sliced potato and an egg.
Red, our tree was put up today, but it's not yet decorated and I finally got the outside lights up today. I never worry about it..and you shouldn't either. As for gift giving...I'm that way too....if Sharon would let me get away with it, I'd just do the prepaid credit cards. :-)
Chi...that IS a neat picture and sounds like quite a meal.
Susan, my mom loves tomatoes but can eat only the little yellow pear ones. All the others make her mouth break out with what look like hives. I have read that the yellow tomatoes are lower acid than the red ones..perhaps they would work for you too?
