Minus, You can get blood drawn from the foot with a physician’s order if the blood is drawn by someone with extra training (usually an RN.) I used to have it done routinely but since they determined infection was more likely it’s harder to do. My last draw was from my foot but it took forever for a doctor to come verify nothing was available in my left arm/hand and wait for the IV nurse to show up.

Dinner tonight was Rhonda’s ginger chicken meatball recipe on noodles instead of in soup. It was delicious.

Dinner was bowls of the soup dh made a couple of days ago. I added a sprinkle of parm to mine and a few croutons. I also had a romaine salad.

I have a reservation at our country club for dinner tonight. I get a free entree for my birthday.

This was a 3 mile walk at around 5,800 feet elevation above sea level. The elevation of the walk and where we live are within about 200 feet, so that wasn't any problem for us.

We've been eating the older leftovers so that when I'm back east Sharon won't be "buried" in leftovers.

I still haven't received orders or anything about travel arrangements. All I have had is that I'm on the list for the next rotation which starts 30 March.

Speaking of "older" leftovers, is there any basic rule about cooked food that is refrigerated?

My sister and her dh dropped by yesterday afternoon with a gift of two 18 egg cartons of yard eggs they'd gotten from a friend with chickens. They're pretty eggs of different hues and haven't been washed so they're safe to keep unrefrigerated.

I saw an advertisement for a new ATK cookbook titled Mostly Meatless. I'm very tempted to buy the Kindle version but it's pricey at $20.

Last night I made a shrimp, spinach rice "casserole" and it was OK. Not a wow. Leftovers tonight.

Carole, I'm so sorry your husband's jaw pain is back. My DH ended up going to the oral and facial surgery at UW-seattle where they dx the jaw necrosis from the Prolia/denausumab shots. Since your DH has not been on any bone density stuff, I hope they can figure out cause and treatment soon.
Keep checking Amazon for your book; they're having their spring prime week sale.

My DH has to get weighed and labs again for April 2nd's Edmonds Pluvicto treatment. Dread. My new oncologist (less than a year) is leaving so I will be doing the labs ordered and hope to see her before she departs. Maybe I can go to my DH's onco. Always pluses and minuses to living in a small town.
He's also back on antibiotics for the jaw necrosis; at least no pain since that horrible surgery.

Eric, good luck with your call back.

Went to Olive Garden for lunch. Got the Buy One, Take One home meal. So we have dinner with a salad and breadsticks!

For leftovers age…I use the "does it look and smell okay?" criteria. :-)

I still haven't received any notifications that would indicate upcoming travel. Perhaps it is the changes taking place within HHS that are slowing things a bit.

I doubt the changes will have a noticeable impact on what I do, but if it does, "semper gumby". :-)

Maggie - RE: ankle draws. The last trained person has retired. He was a transplant doctor and was willing to see me as a private patient to do ankle draws every 6 months for 10 years. There is literally NO ONE at Methodist, St. Lukes, Baylor, Memorial or even at MD Anderson. Ridiculous since there are 4.9 million people in Harris County and 125 hospitals in the greater Houston area. Trust me, I spent a month last year talking with all of my (10) doctors, reaching out to all my friends who are nurses, calling every clinic & hospital in town…. NOPE. Even the new doctor in charge of the blood donor center in the Medical Center said she did didn't know how or know anyone who could. Most told me they are not training people to do that anymore and they don't want liability. For my last surgery 8 years ago, even the anesthetist could not start a line in my foot/ankle/leg. He had to appeal to the head OR nurse.

Sorry to rant when it's not related to dinner. I'll climb down from my hobby horse now.

The rain arrived here last night. I'm thinking French Toast at 3:30pm sounds good because I had to fast this morning and because I have an early evening meeting at the North Police Division.

Eric - love the 'semper gumby'.

Carole, did I miss your birthday? If so, happy birthday!!

Minus you know you're free to rant here any time

Reader- although any time is lousy for sciatica, right before ýour trip is particularly lousy. I hope you can get some relief. I've been there. You have my sympathy.

We had Culver's walleye sandwiches for lunch which are a bit large so dinner is vegetable barley soup from the freezer and grilled cheese.

Nance….Walleye is my favorite fish. I miss having a culvers and even more, walleye!!!!!!!!!

I agree on the "go ahead and rant". :-) I've always viewed "here" as like when people are at the dinner table and talking about "whatever" with those in the kitchen.

I carry a small Gumby figurine in my deployment gear and I would set it up where it could be seen by both responders and those needing assistance. On my last "real" deployment I gave it to a 5 year old that very much needed it and I haven't had a chance to replace it.

Minus, It really is a pain. My veins often collapse even if they get a needle in so they end up with my feet by default. BTW you can't eat or discuss dinner if you don't make it out of the OR.

Carole, I feel bad cracking those pretty eggs to use them. Enjoy your dinner out.

m0mmy, Lunch out is a bargain if it also provides dinner.

Wally, I hope the antibiotic keeps your DH's jaw pain at bay.

Nance, Someday I'd like to take a road trip and take out food from all those good restaurants that have no New England locations. There are walleye in the local stretch of the CT river but I've never seen it on a menu here. Fishing for it would involve heading north where the river is safer and getting a boat. Once DH traded some trout he caught fly fishing in a stream near the river for some walleye.

Eric, The Gumby figurine is a great idea. Your last one probably made a big difference to that child.

Dinner tonight was the ground chicken/salsa variety of stuffed peppers. I used leftover corn kernels instead of rice and think it tasted better.

I had the Catch of the Day special last night, which was drum in a butter sauce and topped with crab meat and shrimp. It was very good. I like drum.

Most of the restaurants in MN where we spend the summer have walleye on the menu, usually battered, and it's always good. It's Canadian walleye since American walleye isn't a commercial fish except for Indian tribes. The Canadian walleye is available in a couple of the supermarkets and is pricey, in the range of $17 to $20 a lb.

We have a couple of places around here that serve walleye. Costco also sells it for around that price. The Culver's meal was fairly pricey I thought. It was very good though and the place was packed so others must have thought so too.

    Tonight is Pizza Night.

I'm going to use up the last of the spinach/rice and maybe put pan fried eggs over it with some melted cheese. I'm thawing some goat shanks for tomorrow…need to figure out how to prep them.

SO envious of walleye….I've tried calling our local fish monger and nope….

  • carolehalston
    carolehalston Posts: 8,983

Wally, you have an enviable selection of fresh fish where you live. You even catch your own. DH and I could probably catch walleye but, truth be told, neither of us wants to clean fish, which involves killing them. We don't hesitate to eat fish someone else has killed and cleaned…. About three summer ago, I caught a pretty walleye off the dock. Good eating size. I took a picture and released it.

We really like lamb shanks but they don't seem available. I used to buy them at Fresh Market but when I went there on Wednesday to buy Einkorn flour ($10 for 2 lb bag), there was no lamb in the meat case. And can't remember the last time I bought lamb shanks. I guess I should try Whole Foods, which is completely out of my familiar shopping territory but I could make the effort.

For some reason a boiled dinner appeals to me. Cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Throw in an onion held together with toothpicks for the onion eater. Maybe with polish sausage.

I saw an interesting spin on shrimp scampi in a NYT (or WAPO) recipe today. A one skillet dish using orzo. I think I'll go that route when I cook the package of shrimp in the freezer. The shrimp are actually too large and they were so fresh as to be hard to pull the heads off.

Carole, I have gotten lamb shanks at Walmart.

  • wallycat
    wallycat Posts: 1,787

If you guys have any good recipes for the shanks, do share. These will be goat, but doubt cooking method or seasoning will matter. Will have to check Walmart next time we are there for lamb stuff.

DH's kidney labs improved SO much, we were both shocked. Sadly, the PSA nearly doubled in 3 weeks. So Wed. treatment is much needed and I'm sure his kidneys will be back to ick. Fix one thing and something else breaks.

Wally - my very favorite recipe is from Julia Child's The Way to Cook. But this one is good too.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes, I got sidetracked from BCO again.

Tonight is a big salad, last night was too, I’ve been craving it lately.

Got back from Houston on Wednesday. Scans were great, nothing new or active. While there DH found a seafood and sushi buffet and we did some damage, lol. Buffets are usually a waste of money for me since I still eat small portions after the paralyzed vocal cord years ago but snow crab legs don’t take up much space, it was just what I needed. I go through periods where I just can’t get enough seafood.

    minustwo Posts: 13,788

Mae - congrats on the scan results. Woo Hoo!!! What's the name of the seafood & sushi buffet. I too love seafood.

On that note, dinner was a can of Mackerel Fillets in EVOO served with triscuits.

Carole, I had to look up drum. I have had it in MI where it's known as sheepshead. The LA name sounds more appetizing.

Illimae, Congratulations on the good scans. It’s great you found a seafood buffet with snow crab. I also don’t eat much at buffets but it’s nice to be able to pick and choose what looks good.

Lamb shanks braised in red wine are delicious.

Dinner tonight was Angus strip steak, cauliflower and tater tots for DH.

    carolehalston Posts: 8,983

Another Congrats on the scan, Mae! Glad you enjoyed the seafood buffet as a bonus.

Maggie, I have eaten sheepshead in a restaurant, too, and it was good. It was once regarded as a trash fish here. There are different varieties of drum. I had puppy drum Thursday night. The much-prized red fish that fishermen catch here is a type of drum but red fish is not a favorite of mine.

I bought Atlantic salmon and scallops yesterday and plan to cook them tonight. I splurged on the scallops ($20 a lb. $8 for 6 scallops) for dh. He loves scallops and doesn't love salmon, but he will eat it as long as it's not overcooked. I also bought corn on the cob and will make him a side dish of kernels off the cob. My side dish will be a large salad.

It's crawfish boil season and the stores have corn on the cob and bags of small potatoes in the big displays of supplies. People throw corn, potatoes, onions, sausage and other additions into the big pot of boiling crawfish. Sadly, we don't get invited to crawfish boils anymore and it's definitely the best way to enjoy crawfish. It's quite an expensive endeavor these days to boil a sack or sacks of crawfish.

One of my fond family memories is crawfish boils at my parents' home when my father harvested the crawfish in swampy areas. DH accompanied him a couple of times.

Minus, it’s called Umi on westheimer near the beltway and they had lots of Japanese dishes. The Maryland style seafood soup was pretty good too.

Illimae, congrats on the scan results! and I love seafood, so YUM. I'll have to google paralyzed vocal cords. I hope it doesn't cause too much pain.

Nance, thanks for that recipe…the mention of beans inspired me to make goat birria. Of course, I ran out of dried guajillo peppers so am using a mix of what I have (new mexico, chocolate, pasilla and mulato). I can serve it as tacos or as is over refried beans.

Thanks Mae. I love Japanese food. And it's on my side of town too.

Carole, Crawfish boils sound wonderful. I've never been to one but have gone to lobster bakes on the beach in New England and crab boils on the eastern shore of MD which were also great social occasions with delicious food.

Illimae's soup/crab legs and Carole's post are making me crave seafood. I'm off to Boston on Tuesday so I'm hoping to get to Legal Seafood.

I'll occasionally pay for scallops but it's not so bad since I'm the only one who eats them.

We are having snow and freezing rain today through Monday. This is has been one of those winters that seems to last forever.

Dinner tonight was hot chicken salad and baked potatoes.

I mistakenly bought a bag of 8 mini-avocados thinking I could certainly eat them. Unfortunately they got soft WAY too fast. Today I gave 4 to a neighbor, made guacamole with 2, put one in my salad, and STILL have one left.

My meal was a large green salad with cukes, radishes & the aforementioned avocado. Served with club crackers. Dessert was 2 Tates new soft baked choc chip cookies. Not really great so I won't buy those again.

Tomorrow I MUST get out in the yard digging weeds, planting a new rose and prepping to plant 8 or 9 plumarias. Not to mention spreading Bermuda seed on the lawns. I hate Bermuda grass but it may cover enough so I don't have to pay to have the entire yard re-sodded with St. Augustine this year.

Happy Sunday, catching up on everyone’s posts. So nice to read…

Minus- I’ve done that too, bought too many avocados. I’ve used them up by making a batch of avocado cream, but it’s always too much lol.

Maggie- so glad you liked the ginger chicken meatballs recipe. And on noodles, sounds perfect. I will definitely make them again.

illimae - woo hoo for good scans. I’ve added occasional fish to my diet, and Japanese style seafood is a favorite.

Going to brunch with my son and his wife today, to a favorite local spot. They make spinach empanadas which are amazing, and a lovely grilled salmon which might be the ticket today.

This week I made a tofu dish which was fabulous https://itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/tofu-bolognese/#recipe highly recommend it.

Wishing everyone a lovely day, Rhonda

rlschaller, that looks great. I have a package of extra firm I need to use up!

Minus, if I get too many avocados (I usually keep mine in the fridge and take out to ripen on the counter as I need them), I make mashed avocado and freeze it.

    Leftover goat birria tonight.
