    We've been eating odds and ends to finish up leftovers. Tonight, I'll cook up one of the huge ribeyes I bought at Costco. My first time buying Prime vs choice and I'm a little nervous I'll eff it up. We managed to find a package with only two (huge) steaks, vs. costco's usual pack size, so the other steak, we may try to sous vide it; tonight I will try the reverse sear method. Air fryed potatoes and broccoli for sides.

    It is a balmy 50 out this morning and we are having "Junuary" this month. LOVE it. Also had some mild drizzle, which is a first in years to see wet anything in June.

    The California Quail pair brought out their BABIES(!!!!!!!!) yesterday. OMG…oxytocin fix to watch the little cotton balls in our driveway. I think there were eight. BEYOND adorable.

    I always liked watching quail when I was growing up. I remember seeing the little fuzzy golf balls crossing the roads while mom and dad quail watched.

    Dinner tonight will be leftovers but I had to jump in on the quail conversation. We have Montezuma quail on the mountain, they’re super cute and make such funny sounds.

    My babysitter in AL raised commercial quail. I’ve eaten quail eggs but not the birds since they are so cute. I’ll eat pheasant, partridge and grouse, however.

    We’re in the middle of a heat wave. We drove out to the ice cream place in the middle of nowhere on a breezy hill.

    Dinner tonight was salmon in lemon sauce, spinach and sautéed baby potatoes.

    Dinner was slices of cold pork loin served with Ina Garten Dill Fingerling Potatoes - steamed in butter. My spuds were apparently even smaller than her directions for small, so were slightly overdone - but still delicious. Drink was San Grigorio Tempranillo. Dessert was a few pieces of Tate's Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt Cookie Bark.

    Nance - good to see you. How are you doing health wise? I'm certainly not 25 anymore, or even 55 - so have senior aches & pains. Time for Special to check in again.

    Eric - congrats on your daughter's engagement. Do they have a date planned?

    We had trails of quail babies in our back yard all the years I was growing up on the San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula. Your quail is definitely unique Mae.

    Where I grew up, and where I am now, Gamble's Quail are the only one's I've seen.

    I'm thinking of roasting a whole chicken for dinner.

    The heat wave continues. I just noticed that we are running about 10* hotter than Wellington, FL.

    Dinner tonight was chicken and onions in sour cream sauce, acorn squash and mashed potatoes.

    Dinner last night was overcooked pork steak that was still tasty and a medley of sauteed veggies. I used the outdoor grill as an oven.

    Blessed relief!! It's in the low 60's this morning.

    Dinner at Clancy's tonight. DH will be having the meatloaf special.

    Congrats Eric, how lovely she called to share the ring. When my son got engaged, they called me right afterwards to say “she said yes” . Lol so sweet.
    I have no experience with quail! I’m fascinated . Love the pics Illimae.

    We are having a major heat wave here, so many cold meals, or quickly blanched vegies, multiple salads with avocado and beans and corn. CSA has delivered multiple greens which has been heavenly, and fresh muzz and good bread, yum. Not a fan of the heat!

    I wonder if DD is going to tell the folks in the office, or let them notice the new ring. :-) The last we heard for the date is sometime late summer or early fall in 2026.

    I've planned and set up disaster communications systems, and also planned several 50-60 million dollar cellular telephone systems. I guess I'll find out how that compares to planning a wedding. :-)

    It's in the mid 90F degree range during the day and most mornings are in the very low 50F degree range. Yesterday's high temperature was 96F and this morning it is 51F.

    I did do the chicken in the dutch oven and added BBQ sauce while it cooked.

    The dutch oven method provides a lot of juice that are perfect for gravy and the leftovers from the gravy preparation gets added to the dogs' food. They very much enjoy the extra flavor. :-)

    Eric, that made me smile…you have quite a gift with humor. Have fun planning…err..paying, LOL.

    I've never tried chicken with bbq sauce so may do that this summer. I feel for those in the heat dome. We had it here one year for 4 days and PNW weather folks are ill-prepared. June is almost over and I just need to get through july and august…

    I will try and post a picture of the baby quail, but the pix are fuzzy (ha, pardon the pun). Took them through my kitchen window; didn't want to scare them.

    I'm making sole with spinach and finishing off the fries from the rib eye dinner. WOW they were/are good. Too good.

    Carole, You are an expert at cooking all kinds of things on the grill.

    Eric, Believe it or not that disaster mobilization experience will probably be very helpful. My son's planned wedding at the Brooklyn botanical gardens was cancelled during covid. When restrictions were lifted he knew he had to get creative because of the venue backlog and my need to be outside. As a former DJ he was able to book a nightclub in Queens with indoor/outdoor bars, seating and dance floors before it opened for the evening. He used the club's vendors for food/drink. A string quartet of coworkers and a DJ friend provided the music as a wedding present. When the club opened for business the patrons thought it was cool that they were joining a wedding celebration that continued into the wee hours of the morning.

    Wally, It must be fun watching the quail activity outside your house. I make BBQ sauce with a tomato juice base and cook the marinated bone in chicken breasts in the oven. It's not my favorite Alabama white vinegar BBQ but it's good enough.

    Rhonda, This current heat wave in the northeast is lasting way too long. I haven't changed what I'm cooking since I went shopping without looking at the forecast. Your CSA boxes are providing ingredients for good no cooking recipes to keep the heat down. I did walk outside with a friend early this morning. It was 87* when I got home at 9:00 am.

    Dinner tonight was hamburgers and salad. I gave in to the heat and didn’t make stuffed peppers.

    You all, as usual are providing me yummy meal ideas.

    With the heat persisting I pulled previously made chicken Enchiladas from. The freezer and made a caprese salad using our basil as a side. I went swimming today and I limited my outside the pool time.

    DH had his meatloaf special last night at Clancy's. I had the walleye fish basket again, with fresh cut fries. We both enjoyed our meals.

    My laptop said it was 49 degrees this morning when we got up. So nice to need the heat pump to take off the chill.

    DH enjoys potato salad for lunch. We had a recommendation for the Amish potato salad at our Walmart. He tried it and likes it. I like the mashed potato salad I make but don't make it often. Why? I don't know. Once the leftovers are refrigerated, I seldom eat it. I know. Weird. LOL.

    Dinner last night was one store-made cheddar brat for each of us and a large helping of sauteed vegetables, with corn off the cob as the main veggie. Also, the rest of the asparagus, a small zucchini, leek, red bell pepper. I meant to throw in a handful of cherry tomatoes but forgot. I love the blistered little tomatoes.

    The corn, purchased at Walmart for 33 cents each was incredibly sweet. It was the yellow and white variegated. It is piled on a table with a handy trash can. I appreciate being able to remove the husks right there. We don't have that arrangement at our supermarkets at home. You have to take the husks home with you.

    I leave the husks on, microwave cobs, then peel off the husks…the silks and husks come off so much easier and the cooking is a breeze. YUM.

    I'm not sure what I'm making tonight…maybe I'll buy more corn on the cob :-) or maybe mac and cheese.

    Carole, That bicolor butter and sugar corn is so good. I haven't seen any for sale around here yet.

    Like Wally I microwave corn in its husks. It keeps the moisture in and the husks are easy to peel off.

    Dinner tonight was chicken Pad Thai. I had never made it before but it turned out well.

    I always cut the corn off the cob before cooking it. DH's front two teeth on the top make up a removable bridge.

    Dinner last night was a large tossed salad and a skillet dish with ground beef, baby bell mushrooms, penne pasta and the rest of the jar of alfredo sauce. Enough leftover pasta dish for another meal.

    I think I will make mac/cheese with chunks of ham…veg TBD.

    I also take the kernels off the cob for DH (DH has partial jaw/teeth removed from his cancer treatment, but I still cook them first. Easier to peel and no difference in effort to remove the kernels. ..just my experience. I miss his desire to grill; grilled corn is the best (IMHO).

    I’ve never made corn in the microwave, thanks all. Love learning new ways to cook.
    From the CSA this week - I sautéed snow peas with garlic and ginger and a fruit salad of cantaloupe, blackberries and raspberries. So refreshing. Fresh muzz again on toast, and made pesto with the fresh basil.

    Dinner last night was delicious and easy. A gentle rain interfered with my plan to use the outdoor gas grill in its oven mode. I got out the slow cooker at 2:30 and got salsa chicken started on High. Two chicken thighs, skin on bone in, a can of rinsed black beans, and a jar of salsa. My rescue plan was to microwave the chicken if it wasn't done by dinner time, between 6:30 and 7:00 for us. It was fall off the bone tender. We also had brown jasmine rice. Always a favorite meal with me and dh seemed to enjoy it, too.

    I used a slow cooker liner which makes cleanup mostly a matter of washing the lid.

    Tonight will be leftover pasta skillet dish and a salad.

    The weather forecast has the possibility of severe thunder storms. Some people are still dealing with fallen trees from last weekend's storms.

    Carole, I’m glad your unplanned slow cooker dinner worked out so well. I also use slow cooker liners and foil on baking pans to make cleanup easier.

    Rhonda, Your fruit salad mix sounds delicious. I’ll have to try that combination of fruit.

    A bowl of Legal Seafood clam chowder for lunch made getting up at 5:00 am worth it.

    Dinner tonight was chicken Alfredo on trofie pasta.

    I'm another one who has to take the kernels off the cob before serving due to tooth issues, but I do cook the ears first.

    Supper was 1/2 of a chicken sandwich with the last of the leftover breast I pulled out of the freezer. Dessert was a White Chocolate Raspberry bundtlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes. It was BOGO, so I treated myself.

    I think DD and beau are going to get a "courthouse wedding" so she can get on his far superior job benefit plan, and then have a "real wedding" later. as for the disaster response work…I hope I don't the "disaster" part! :-)

    Wally, the quail in the image look like the ones I remember. Do they have the top knot?

    The fruit salad sounds good. All but the peaches are "at perfection". I think the peaches need another week.

    Carole, that recipe—chicken, black beans and salsa—is something we also do It is a good recipe for when neither of us feel like cooking a lot. :-)

    I just looked for my "corn kernel shaver" that I use to remove the kernels from the cob so I can can (jar) the corn. It's a circular sharp edged affair with some handles and it cuts the kernels off quite nicely. Like a mandoline, it will shave the skin off of a finger so maybe it's just as well I can't find it. :-)

    Eric, LOL. Yes, the quail have the little top knot on their heads. The little chicks look like they have a tiny mohawk. I'm sad to say that each day, there are fewer. I think they only have a 20% survival rate 😓 .

    I'm making chicken thighs sitting on a bed of sliced potatoes. I'll cook some cabbage in broth/butter for the veg.
