So...whats for dinner?

Carole, Happy anniversary! Hopefully the weather cooperates. Otherwise you can have your celebratory meal on another day. With the bike riding, gym, golf and walking it sounds like you are fit whatever the scale says.
We’re under a boil water advisory after flooding and a water main break. I’m glad we live above the flood plain.
Dinner tonight was oven baked chicken, parsnips and mashed potatoes.

Went to lunch with my nephew to a neighborhood Chinese place that has been there for years. I ordered the Special LoMein, which had chicken & shrimp & pork and it was enough for three meals, in addition to the included soup. Since I've now eaten at a number of "REAL" Chinese restaurants with his in-laws who are from Hong Kong, this was just tolerable. But it was really good to see him. He's a vegan & his meal included 2 cups of white rice. I brought most of that home & froze it to make my own fried rice next week.

Happy Anniversary!!!!

carole &DH - hope the weather cooperated for the celebratory anniversary meal, and hope your day was fun! Congrats!
For the last two nights I have not eaten dinner, wasn't hungry two night ago and last night had an upset stomach situation. I did make DH the same basic salad trio both nights - a green salad with buffalo chicken and blue cheese dressing and crumbles, a fruit salad, and coleslaw. I needed to use up both the chicken and the coleslaw so it worked out great.
We sent my MIL's BFF a birthday bouquet (her 93rd, she is the lone survivor of the parent friend group) and my SILs both sent me Amazon gift cards to offset a portion of the cost, so I couldn't resist some Amazon Prime Day shopping. Now I am excitedly awaiting the delivery, lol! I also succumbed to the Anniversary sale at Nordstrom - but restricted myself to some cute pajamas and a sweater. This is what happens when I have too much time on my hands and I am unsupervised.
DH and DD are out in the new boat doing some scalloping with a group from her work - they are called Day Aways, and consist of clients on their boats doing an organized outing. I need to grocery shop but it is currently thundering so I am not trying to be at the store when the torrential rain comes…
I am considering either steaks from the freezer or a pork roast for dinner, probably roasted broccoli and sweet potatoes or rice for sides.

Special, I hope your stomach has settled. I would love to go scalloping someday; I’ve been clamming, lobstering, shrimping, oystering and crabbing but have never fished for scallops. I took advantage of Amazon Prime’s $8 London Fog kids’ winter jackets. My GS has coats for the next four years, all in different colors.
Minus, I like visiting my siblings in CA since there is authentic Chinese and Mexican food available there.
Dinner tonight was coconut curry salmon on rice.

Last night's dinner was Nathan's wieners with Bush's baked beans and a side salad with cucumbers and tomatoes from the farmers market and fresh basil from the plant on the deck. Also some fresh mozzarella. Everything tasted good.
Tonight's dinner will include fresh green beans and new potatoes.
Maggie, those jackets sound so cute. My memory of food in CA is the fish taco fast food restaurants. I wish we had those at home.
DH loves scallops but we seldom have them. I should buy them more often at home.

Still finishing up the Indian meal (just so-so).
Our dishwasher quit working so I am in "fix it" mode…ugh..had to hand wash everything sitting in the dishwasher…fun times and fond memories of apartment living in my 20s.
I love scallops; DH cannot be bothered. I've got a bag of frozen, "dry" from costco in the bowels of my freezer. If we have enough leftovers for only one meal, I let DH take it and I thaw some scallops. YUM!

Sharon just told me that the lightening caused Dragon Bravo Fire, burning in the Grand Canyon destroyed the North Rim Lodge, visitor center and several cabins. Sharon and I spent a lot of time there.
2 -
I also love scallops but DH won’t eat them. I’ll buy them for myself and cook something else for him. I like Wally’s idea of the scallops for one and single serving leftovers for the other.
Wally, I hope your dishwasher can be repaired. We had to replace our 23 year old model about six months ago.
Eric, Sad to hear that fire destroyed the North Rim Lodge. We never stayed in the lodge complex but visited several times. There was a statue of Brighty the mule in the lodge. The Marguerite Henry children’s book about him was why I had to ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on a mule.
DS is staying with us for several days, working remotely and running a booth at college fairs in NH and MA.
Dinner tonight was chicken in orange curaçao sauce, sautéed summer squash and mashed potatoes.

Dinner was a slice of banana bread spread with butter. The little loaf of banana bread was a gift from Cathy, a neighbor at the farmers market. She is from the Philippines and has a booth with cookies, home-made dolls clothes, and plants and cut flowers. She pops over to our booth with a gift bag every Saturday.
We had late lunch at Dairy Queen after a bicycle ride on the Heartland Trail. This time we biked from the village of Dorset to the village of Nevis and back. A little over 10 miles. The return trip was facing the wind with slight uphill stretches, so it was a little more strenuous. We're becoming fans of the DQ $7 meals because the burger, fries portion and sundae are downsized, enough and not too much.
Maggie, I know you'll enjoy the opportunity to spend time with your son.
Eric, destruction of the historic buildings at the Grand Canyon is a sad thing.

Most restaurants are closed today so our anniversary meal (32 years) will be fried rice with what I need to get rid of in the fridge.
Maggie, our dishwasher is about 20 years old, so it wasn't unexpected.
Carole, I'm impressed with your biking. Glad that your DH's new knees are doing well.
I heard about that fire—thanks for the update as to cause.
We will have a 2 day "heat wave" starting tomorrow so I will be indoors.
Happy Bastille Day!!

And a very happy anniversary to you too Wally!
I hope tonight's dinner is drunken noodles. I've just had six days of vertigo (cause as yet unknown) where I couldn't even stand. Yesterday was way better and today better yet. ENT appointment tomorrow to figure it out. Until then, I'm not moving fast lol.
2 -
Thank you, Nance. I hope you feel better soon. Have you heard of ear crystals?? Google it and see if you can do the exercises. When I get that, it is usually fluid buildup. I hope the cause is simple, along with a fast resolution.
1 -
Wally - I'm very familiar with the crystals and the Epley maneuver. I'm usually acutely aware of that issue because of a sudden movement I made. This was something woke up with. I suppose it's possible I did something in my sleep. Anyway we'll see what the ENT says. Thanks for your concern.

Report back. I've also used rubbing alcohol as a drop in my ear, to evaporate any fluid….but you are smart to get it checked and I hope you can come back and tell us it was a virus and you're cured :-)

Sinus congestion can give me vertigo. Or that's my diagnosis. My bouts aren't as severe as what you're experiencing, Nance. I remember my terror some years ago when I was first struck with vertigo. My immediate reaction was "Brain tumor!!!" It's quite common for me to turn over at night and feel the bed rotating. I haven't been bothered as much this summer as last summer.
Happy Anniversary, Wally!
2 -
Wally, Happy Bastille Day and Happy Anniversary to you and your DH! Have a celebratory meal on another day.
Carole, That sounds like an enjoyable bike ride. The DQ meal is a good value.
Nance, If the vertigo doesn't improve it's worth getting a brain MRI. DH was getting PT for suspected ear crystals (in spite of having the wrong type of nystagmus) which made his balance much worse. A PA in urgent care ordered the scan which showed white matter lesions, not a great thing to have but at least a correct diagnosis. The vestibular PT changed the program to correspond to the problem so it actually became helpful. Hopefully yours is just a virus that will clear up.
Dinner tonight was chicken Alfredo on noodles.

auntie - important to consider the same situation as DD - suspected labyrinthitis caused by a latent herpetic virus (chicken pox or shingles) for which steroids and an antiviral are needed asap so as not to compromise hearing. DD's vertigo was severe enough that she sought help pronto and so far her hearing is ok. Mine was subtle enough (felt like two glasses of wine) that I delayed by a number of weeks and it cost me hearing on my left side, I can no longer discern human voice. I did the same medication she did but it didn't help me.
1 -
Oh Special, that's terrible. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Since I no longer have symptoms as of Sunday the best guess from the ENT (without tests) is a virus that I no longer have. The exam was normal and I have no hearing loss. We decided to wait and see if the vertigo returns before doing anything further. I'm ok with that.
We had a late lunch so dinner will probably be breakfast.
2 -
Nance, that is GREAT news!
I'm making spam yakisoba

DH made fajitas tonight and they were great! I’ve been craving them since we were in Houston over a month ago. Unfortunately, the craving is still there, so I’ll need more but will have to waiting until I go to El Paso for treatment.
2 -
Nance, Good to hear the vertigo has cleared up.
Illimae, Yum on the fajitas.
Dinner tonight was chicken divan.
1 -
Maggie, I love chicken divan but always forget about it. Thanks for the reminder!

Tonight was Mahjong so I made chicken salad and brought crackers. So my plate was a mixture of this and that.
I now make my non-fancy version of chicken salad using canned white meat chicken. I bought it at Walmart on a whim as I wasn't even aware there was canned chicken that was all chicken and tasted good. And the cans I bought were the perfect size for either a family meal or as a lunch for a few days.
I also now want to make chicken divan, which I also forget about.

I'll have to look up chicken divan since I don't remember anything about it.
Lunch yesterday was pizza at the Costco in Baxter/Brainerd, about two hours drive. We decided to take a road trip there. Funny because the Costco at home is a 5 minutes drive and we continued to shop at Sam's Club after paying for a membership at Costco's to see if we liked shopping there.
We had heard rave reviews of the pizza at Costco's during our rv travels. So lunch was a slice of pizza and a drink, Coke Zero from the dispenser. I really liked the pizza sauce, enhanced with pepper flakes. DH had a little trouble eating his slice because intermittent jaw pain has returned.
We didn't buy a lot of items but I was delighted to find a big hunk of Pecorino Romano cheese for grating. Dh picked up a big hunk of Gouda. We snacked on the Gouda for dinner.
Today I have to make the meatloaf that was planned for two nights ago. I also have to deal with a watermelon. I will cut it into bite size pieces and refrigerate the containers. I dare not throw the rinds into the dumpster because the bears love the rinds and we have a dumpster diving bear again this summer. Instead I will take the bucket of rinds out onto Happy Hollow Road and throw them into the woods away from the campground. Life at Pinehollow Resort! LOL.

Forgot to say I'm glad you're back to normal balance, Nance.

5 minutes from a costco…green with envy. I'm sorry for your DH's jaw pain.
We hit 80 yesterday…and may have 77 today before getting back to the 60s. Grateful that at least, we don't have mosquitoes near our house. I'd have to put netting on in WI to mow the lawn. Also grateful our heatpump works..last year's fiasco is always in the back of my mind.
3 day fishing starts tomorrow and then August 1st, open for 24/7 fishing. Hope my DH will be up to it. His "good" side of the jaw is starting to show issues.
Leftover spam yakisoba noodles. So easy and delicious.

auntie - so glad the vertigo is under control. One thing the ENT advised for DD is to have Antivert on hand. The same active ingredient is in non-drowsy Dramamine. I just returned to the gym and have found some difficulty with the treadmill, I get mildly off balance if I don't have one hand on the rail. All I have to do is rest it there and I am ok. I think it is me moving and the treadmill moving that is causing it. It is indeed a bummer to be deaf on one side - it was hard right afterward because it took me quite a while to acclimate. When the ENT heard me say I was avoiding crowded public places he advised me to have a hearing aid because isolation has been shown to contribute to cognitive impairment in a study done at the VA. I got the hearing aid and wore it pretty regularly until Covid. with more time at home I got much better at determining the origin of sound, and focusing on the speaker's face to help me "hear" what they were saying and now wear the hearing aid far less even when I am out. I struggle on airplanes and in environments with a lot of ambient background noise - even with the hearing aid.
I made chicken divan often many years ago, but I too forget about it despite liking it! I buy the large bags of broccoli so it is a good way to use some of it.
I made DH a salad for dinner the last two nights after roasting four bone-in, skin-on split chicken breasts in the oven after my grocery run. I pulled the meat off and have it in the fridge. His salad was little gem lettuce, half a head of small napa cabbage (I get it at Target in a package of two - love it!), some chicken, diced mango, diced avocado, slivered almonds, scallion, and dressing made from half peanut sauce and half vinaigrette. I made myself a chicken Waldorf with some added dried cranberries since I can't have the lettuce or cabbage. Tonight will be pork roast with some bourbon and apricot jam as a glaze, sweet potato, and roasted broccoli.

Special - I did take meclizine, which unlike previous times, did not work. Curious. One thing the doc told me was that risk factors include diabetes, heart disease , history of migraines and peripheral neuropathy- all me. It's a wonder I'm not dizzy all the time.
Carole - the cheeses at Costco is one of the highlights. Their Parmigiano reggiano is a staple in our cheese drawer.
Good luck fishing Wally!
Tonight is the blue plate special: cubed steaks, mashed potatoes and corn off the cob. And of course, gravy.

There’s a super easy Campbells version, possibly on a cream of chicken can. I make it with chopped chunks of baked or pan seared chicken, broccoli and extra cheddar, love it. I have no limits for the dinner plate but It’s well known in my house that all leftovers are strictly mine.
Tonight, DH is having chicken but I’m not into it today. I’ll make English muffin pizzas for myself and salad to share.2
