So...whats for dinner?

Nance, the first time I ate fry bread tacos was out west somewhere, maybe Montana, and they were called Indian Tacos. Mary used the short cut method. She bought raw dough rolls and flattened them. I looked up a recipe and the dough is simple to make.
Last night's dinner was the rest of the Cosco ravioli (spinach and cheese) out of the freezer with Rao's alfredo sauce. Side was a large chopped salad.
The freezer is looking emptier.

Minus, I'm shocked that our QFC (kroger) doesn't carry the shoestring beets. Amazon sells it, but 30 bucks for 4 cans…um, no.
Salmon, cabbage and corn tonight. I'm also going to air fry the maitake 'shrooms I bought yesterday.

Carole, Since your freezer is looking emptier you must be heading south in the not too distant future.
Wally, Those beets are wicked expensive.
DS is visiting to update my computer before the windows 10 witching hour. My 2008 Dell still works quite well other than no longer connecting to the printer. I certainly got my money’s worth from that machine.
Dinner tonight was a very good cut of corned beef along with the usual cabbage and potatoes.

Maggie: nice to have son's who update computers for us. My DS came to town & updated mine to Window's 11 in April
Wally: OMG - I about fainted when I saw that price on Amazon. I think I've been paying $0.79 per can. That said, they aren't always in stock & I haven't bought any in a couple of months. Now on my list to buy next week.
Carole: Yup - I've been wondering when you'll head back home. Or maybe you're waiting until Hurricane Season is over.
We've had a couple of "cold" nights (LOL) - actually down to 76 last night. I had to get out a sweater. Still mid 90s most days, but low humidity last week made that tolerable.
I made it to the County library sale yesterday - an urgent trip since I missed the monthly City library warehouse sale the Saturday before and only had 5 or 6 books I hadn't read. The County library sells all adult books for $2.00 - hardback, paper, even signed first editions. I had already started on a project to re-read books that are on my shelves and determine what to give away. I have complete works by a number of authors. I've read a couple by three different authors so far last week and doubt that I'll be able to part with any of them. But it's something I must do so my son isn't left with over 1000 books to deal with. (no joke - and that's considering I take several bags to the used book store or donate to the library at least once a month).
Can't remember if I shared my new discovery - Boston Cream Mini Donuts. Trying to ration myself to one a day is difficult. I got busy last night & forgot about dinner, so I just heated a little can of Beenie Weenies. Tonight will be a large salad with the above mentioned beets, eggs, Campari tomatoes, English cucumber, mushrooms, radishes, black olives, etc. As you can tell, I did make it to the grocery store Friday.

I have no idea what we'll have today. DH, literally overnight, is uncoordinated and fell and has lost appetite. I suspect his calcium levels are climbing and he may need another denausumab (sp?) injection. May go to express care this morning and make sure all is good….ugh.

Oh Wally, I'm so sorry your DH is struggling so. I hope his latest issue is easily resolved. I know how stressful it must be for you.
Maggie , your meals are always so varied. You seem to have a much greater repertoire than I. I have a gazillion recipes but when it's time to plan I fall back into the same handful of things. How do you decide your meal plans?
So minus, we're do we find these delectable mini donuts? Boston creams are my fave
Sundays are usually carryout night. I'm craving fried chicken.1 -
Nance - I agree. Boston Cream Pie was always my favorite. I found my Boston Cream Mini Donuts at Kroger but when I google it looks like Randalls & Safeway and several other stores might have them.

Wally, let us know how things go with DH….hopefully it is something easy to take care of.
Dinner last night was chicken and mixed vegetables. Thursday we drove to Kingman, AZ to get a gas (propane) kitchen range that will operate normally even if the electrical power is off. It will be most welcome to be able to cook without lights.
The weather here is starting to cool down…around 50F/12C in the mornings and pleasant (mid 80F/25C) in the afternoon.
Beets…don't like them…to me they taste like dirt. My mom told me they had to repaint the kitchen wall when they tried to feed "infant me" some beets. :-)
If I brought home doughnuts like that, Sharon would be silently cursing me as she's eating one. She doesn't have to much more to go to hit her "goal weight" and those wouldn't help. I've thought about making some doughnuts at home, but…same thing…I don't want to sabotage her efforts. :-)

We were in the ED for several hours; labs, urine sample, blah, blah…no answer. Aging and treatments may have simply taken their toll. Sadly, his PSA is going back up so the decision to try a new treatment …or see how long he lasts without anything, hopefully, little pain and suffering.😫
1 -
Oh Wally - so sorry to hear "no answer". You're both in my thoughts.
2 -
Wally, sorry there is not a good answer for you. My DH just had a biopsy rsults from his prostate and fortunately his results are clear, just enlargement stuff. It is not fun to hear of that either. I will add you to my prayers.

Wally, I hope they can do something for your DH that won't be too hard on him or you.
Minus, I've given up worrying about the huge number of books in my house. There are many textbooks which nobody would want but DH and DD are adamant that they might refer to them someday. There are a couple of "little libraries" within walking distance of my house so I borrow from and donate to those.
Eric, I'm glad you will have a gas range so that you can cook without power. I have a hybrid range: gas burners and an electric oven. I was without an oven or broiler for so many years I can easily do without them
Nance, We spent so many years eating free chicken breast (from trials) and eggs I had to come up with ways to make them taste different and couldn't repeat too often. DH can't have nitrates or pork (migraines) so I still work with a limited base. Most everything I cook is made in one pan on top of the stove in less than an hour.
I have my new computer all set up and functioning beautifully. After teaching music for a semester at a school where he had to hit the ground to avoid drug related gunfire in the street DS worked as a DJ for several years in NY and Ontario until he discovered he needed a job with health insurance. He's really good at trouble shooting everything needed to put on a flashy performance.
Dinner tonight was meatballs and spinach in onion sauce on noodles.

Maggie, I, too, admire the variety of your dinners.
Another ailing dh. He is running a temperature and has a cough. It must be a virus since he's taking an antibiotic for the ear surgery. Yesterday a home covid test was negative. Today we'll go to a clinic in town for a flu test.
His dinner last night was toast. I had a taco salad.

My DH has his dental biweekly visit today. He's doing a bit better, but not much. Not hungry. He doesn't have a fever, but maybe there's a bug going around. I've had nasty potty issues (I'll leave it at that) and wonder if mine is just pure stress. This is draining. My face has aged 20 years overnight. UGH.
Carole, hope your DH feels better soon. Update us on the covid. Interesting study that rx nasal spray antihistamine (azelestaine sp?) can prevent catching covid or at least limit symptoms. I hope that is not what your DH has.
No idea what is for dinner since DH's appetite is bad.
1 -
DH tested negative for Covid on the home test. He opted not to go to the clinic today and is doing better. The bandage on his ear came off today and his sutures look good. I was relieved to see that infection in that area was not the cause of his fever. He must have picked up a virus.
I made chicken noodle soup for his lunch with broth from boiling the bones of a rotisserie chicken. The noodles are thick dry noodles I bought recently and used in a meal.
I had a delicious green pea salad for lunch. Canned green peas, chopped lettuce, halved cherry tomatoes from Mary's garden, grated cheddar, mayo. I enjoyed every bite. Recently I'm finding Duke's light mayo and buying it at a high price. It's so lemony and tasty.
Not sure what dinner will be. Maybe a grilled sandwich on sour dough bread.

I'm sorry to hear the DHs are doing poorly. Wishing them both well.
I'm a Hellmans gal but I'll have to try Duke's I know they have a loyal following.
Dinner tonight is beef stew in the slow cooker. The only side will be a toasted mini baguette.

Hopefully those who are under the weather feel better soon. There are so many possible causes for similar symptoms
Nance, I also use Hellman’s but like Duke’s as well. Any kind of mayo is better than the salad cream that was used in its place in the UK.
Dinner tonight was pizza made using Aldi’s dough..
2 -
I'm a Hellman's fan, too, but like Duke's just as well.
DH seems to have cold symptoms. His temperature was normal just now on the first checking of the day. He'll probably be taking it easy again today.
Our grilled ham and cheese with a slice of tomato on bought sour dough bread last night was tasty.
We have a departure date, 29th of this month.

Eric, Sharon deserves praise for her weight loss. I'm living proof that paying for the WW app doesn't guarantee success.

I think my DH also has a cold. The dentist's office said they've been having a round of it in their office; I started a light cough last night, so hopefully that is all that is going on. It just amazes me how differently people respond to an infection, especially as they get older…
We are going to have a freaky 80 degree day before cool temps again. I oven "fried" potatoes this morning while the house was a gorgeous 61 inside. I can reheat them in the air fryer later. Not sure what dinner will be…maybe a burger with the fries.
I won't touch Kraft "dressing." Waaay too sweet. Hellman's/Best-foods or Dukes. Dukes has no added sugar, where most mayo does. Whichever is on sale.

Dinner tonight was chicken and cabbage stir fry with boiled potatoes.
0 -
Last night's dinner was a small pork steak, breaded and cooked in a skillet, and Bob's mac and cheese.

We hit 89 yesterday. OY! Glad the days are shorter.
I air fried the roasted potato wedges I made that morning, cabbage and a frozen burger patty with cheese melted on there. No idea what today will be.
I didn't sleep much. I haven't been sick in nearly 15 years. I'm not a fan. Carole, I hope your DH is improving and that you don't share it.

wishing all who are under the weather a reprise … hope immune systems kick in and you and DHs feel better. It’s harder as we age!
Tonight is simple green beans and peas with roast chicken for DH and baked tofu for me . Though I am splurging with a red wine and blackberry brandy cocktail with garlic bruschetta toasts lol….0 -
I hope, also, that everyone feels better soon. Being sick "sucks". :-)
Last night was just hamburgers. The thunderstorms were quite strong in the afternoon and the power was "off-on-repeat" several times, so it was "nothing fancy that couldn't withstand uneven cooking temperatures. This time the outages were likely lightening hitting the power lines and the power line protection systems working correctly, so the power was only out 1-2 seconds at a time.
The thunderstorms also had me "grumbling" as the storms prevented me from running (well, these days, its more of a slow jog) 5-6 miles. 45 years ago I could run 10 (or more) miles at 6 minutes per mile pace and carry on a conversation. Now I'm about 1/2 that fast and…no talking. I'm not sure what happened. :-)
I'm hoping the storms stay away for tonight.
Except for two mornings, it's been in the middle 50F degree range in the mornings and in the mid to upper 80F degrees during the afternoon. Those two unusual mornings, it was around 40F degrees. I'm hoping the freezing weather stays away for another few weeks so we can continue harvesting from the Roma tomato plants. The amount we get per harvest isn't quite enough to preserve, so we are eating them like candy, making salads with lots of tomatoes and Sharon is using them for all manner of sauces.
1 -
Wally, I hope that cough settles down so you can get some sleep.
Rhonda, Bruschetta with a red wine and blackberry brandy cocktail sounds both elegant and delicious.
Eric, I recently had some medical provider ask if I could run if a bear were chasing me. My answer was I would climb a tree instead.
Dinner tonight was chicken and onions in sour cream sauce with mashed potatoes.
1 -
Dinner last night was overcooked roasted chicken thighs and leftover mac and cheese. Also canned cranberry sauce with berries.

Last nights dinner was flat bread pizzas made with some flat bread picked up at Trader Joe's. They were really good. Toppings were things from the fridge - green pepper, deli ham, some Italian cheese and the remains of a jar of Victorias marinara. The package had two large breads so I froze one for another meal. I also made a small salad.
Tonight is a grilled marinated pork tenderloin with unknown vegetables. Probably broccoli.
Hope everyone feeling poorly is doing better today.

Went to lunch with my ex-dh and his wife today at a long standing restaurant I hadn't visited in 25 years. (In case Mae checks in - Cavatores). Nice visit. We met at 11am and didn't leave until 2:30p. The food was OK but sadly not as good as it was in the late 1980s & 1990s. Ex-dh had steak (of course). I had a seafood bowl with scallops & shrimp on angel hair pasta. It could have used more 'sauce'. His wife had a chicken & pasta bowl and said hers was dry too.
Large salad yesterday. One with at least 10 or 12 ingredients in addition to the greens. But I forgot to open the can of black olives. I had drinks last night with a good friend I usually see every week but I hadn't seen since August 1st. She gave me a bottle of her new favorite wine to bring home - Mad Duck - a zinfandel from Lodi, CA.
Nance - I'm going to look for that TJ's flatbread. I usually make pizzas with Naan.
Eric - did the storms miss you?
Carole - I'm sure you have mixed feeling about going home on 9/29. Will you detour to see relatives this time?
0 -
Carole, I prefer the canned cranberry sauce with the berries since it seems more like homemade.
Nance, I wish we had a Trader Joe's closer to us. They do have good flatbread.
Minus, I'm glad you enjoyed the company at lunch but it's too bad you didn't get enough sauce for the meal. That's so important when you have pasta.
Dinner tonight was steak, sauteed mushrooms and tater tots for DH. I had planned to use the steak in a sauce and serve it on pasta but DH wanted to eat sooner so I went with plain.
