Carole, The local supermarkets have had good turnips but no fresh beets. It’s funny how using the good ingredient conflicts with curiosity about a product you want to try. I wish all dilemmas were this inconsequential.
Eric, It’s such a worry watching from afar. When I lived in AR DD’s best friend was an Israeli girl whose father worked on a kibbutz and was studying for an advanced agricultural qualification. The family spent a great deal of time watching news broadcasts to follow locations of Iranian bombing raids in Israel since telephone communication was out, I hope your brother stays safe.
I got carded today when I bought wine for cooking at Walmart. When I looked surprised the cashier pointed to the sign that says anyone who appears to be under 40 will be asked for an ID. She was probably in her mid 70’s, just a few years older than me. I was wearing a mask but I took it as a compliment.
Dinner tonight was a stir fry of shrimp, veggies and soba.

The chicken and dumplings made with the frozen flat dumplings was quite good. The "dumplings" were actually flat noodles. Not the same as home-made flat dumplings/noodles but definitely easier. The home-made dumplings puff up a little and thicken the broth. The dish is so high carb that we don't eat it often. When we do, it's a treat.
During past years when I would drive my mother to Mississippi to visit a favorite cousin, Nola, home-cooked lunch would feature chicken and dumplings, finished in the oven with a crust on top. It wasn't a food my Louisiana father grew up eating. He always sprinkled hot sauce on top. It was always a favorite with my mother's six kids.
We may do leftovers tonight.

My brother said he is okay and can go several weeks without leaving the apartment.
He said that none of the fired missiles fired toward the UAE hit; being intercepted and destroyed while still in the air or falling into the sea. Apparently the "war drones" are more of a problem with 10-15% of them getting through and causing damage.
I understand why drones are more of a problem to shoot down than ballistic missiles, so his comments don't surprise me.

Eric, It’s good that your brother can remain in his apartment. I read that the local government in Dubai warned people to stay away from hotels after one was hit by drones. Since drones are newer than missiles,, counter drone technology is probably not as advanced as that used to destroy guided rockets.
Carole, Chicken and dumplings is real comfort food. I have never put hot sauce on it but I’m not from NOLA. When DD was applying for her marriage license there she went to the front of the out-of-state line since she was born in AL and they assumed her surname was Cajun. The name is of French origin but she didn’t tell them it came from the Normans who invaded Ireland rather than the Acadians.
Dinner tonight was oven fried chicken (low carb version), cauliflower and mashed potatoes.

DH had leftover pasta last night and I had leftover dumplings. I also had a romaine salad.

Carole, I slice a chicken breast half in two and coat with mayo. I then bread with crushed pork rinds (chicharonnes) and bake in a pan sprayed with olive oil at 350F for 30-45 minutes depending on their size. Since it’s a snack food you can get the pork rinds in various flavors like lime, queso or bbq as well as plain. The mayo keeps the chicken moist.

We're in spring weather with temperatures in the 70's, up to 80. Pollen season will soon be in full swing. My Neti Pot is already getting a workout.
Interesting breading, Maggie. When I was growing up, we had homemade pork skins or chitlins whenever a hog was butchered. They were much crunchier than the bagged pork skins. They were a byproduct of rendering the fat for use as lard.
My large-dice oven roasted beets and turnips last night weren't a big success. The beets were yellow beets and probably a long time out of the soil they grew in. They resisted getting tender and didn't have a lot of flavor. The turnips were better. I gave dh most of the turnips. The meat was a small pork steak spread with barbecue sauce and several pieces of pork sausage. Since the oven was on, I cooked them in the oven, too. We didn't go to bed hungry, but it wasn't a great meal. Some meals are just ho-hum meals.

Temperatures have been in the 75F degree range, with morning temperatures slightly below freezing. It's supposed to cool down again next week.
Dinner has been "hit and miss". I've been running 5-6 miles in the evenings and that "stunts" my appetite. Sharon has been running a couple of miles and "hasn't been too hungry either". So, dinner has been an apple, maybe…. :-)
The propane truck just showed up.

Our natural gas bill for the past month was the highest it has ever been. $146. The highest bill in the past was in the $90's. Our cook stove, hot water heat, clothes dryer, furnace are all gas. Thirty plus years ago when we moved into this house, gas was cheaper than electric. Now that we have solar panels, electric would definitely be cheaper, but we're not about to start changing things.

Eric, We have been using 60 rather than 45 gallons a month this winter since it has been consistently colder than usual. The algorithm for automatic delivery seems to depend on the last few years rather than what the current temps have been and is inaccurate.
Carole, Maybe this is not a good winter for beets. The turnips are decent but there are no beets to be found here. When we lived in TN our neighbors who purchased only sugar and flour and had a single cold tap, an outhouse and no power in their milk barn treated us to the "whole hog" including chitlins, trotters and head cheese.
It has been snowing since noon. I’d send it Wally’s way if I could.

LOL, I'd happily take any cold or snow. The social worker and hospice nurse were here and I told them I have reverse SAD and to please stop saying sunny is welcome, LOL. Nurse was hours late, so we are finding a new schedule to suit her. Trying 1x week since DH is doing OK. I read the NYTimes on hospice and my worst fears were written there..basically useless, but at least people know you're out there, fighting.

I guess the propane company we use is "low tech". They show up the 1st Tuesday of each month and look at the tank gauge. If it's below 50%, the fill the tank back up to the 80-85% "limit", otherwise, they just leave and come back next month.
The driver says that the company delivery area is divided up into five zones, one for each workday of the week, and the trucks are in that zone the same day of the week, so if a customer is needing propane and they can wait until their zone's day, there's no extra charge for a delivery. If they can't wait, then there is a trip charge.
So far, we've not had any propane shortages.
This morning, I ran almost 6 miles and Sharon ran 2 miles. This was at 10:30am , so by dinner time, our appetite was "normal". Tonight it was spaghetti with Sharon's homemade sauce and corn on the cob grilled on the BBQ.
