So...whats for dinner?

I didn't know that about the FDA. :-)

Mary's Thanksgiving meal was good. She gave me some of the sliced leftover turkey. There were eight of us at the table. I helped with the cleanup and dh and I returned to our 5th wheel camper. The remaining six played cards.
The radar shows lots of rain moving through today.

I have no idea what I've been eating…ice cream and last of my pulled pork last night and a can of chili the other night.
I've been thinking about you guys but not really able to focus....Finally got 6 hours of sleep last night.DH is now basically dying in my living room, while we sedate him.GOD AWFUL experience.Hospital
bed and catheter...oxy is finally knocking him out as the Haloperidol,
hydromorphone, morphine barely touched it. 6 tabs of lorazapam and can
administer up to every 2 hours along with oxy.The catheter is life saving and helpful for sleep.Hospice
out here is a joke...all the things that are typically offered, you
realize when you need it, they don't have the resources here....and
expect you to pay for a lot of stuff...so when you are least able to
think rationally, they can bleed you dry. American health care should
be a poster to the world on what not to do. Sorry for the rant.My poor, sweet boy...the indignity and all the things he didn't want but was in denial would come without his own hand.2 -
Wally my heart aches for you and your DH. So very very sorry.

Wally, What you are going through is so hard. You are doing it so your DH has you nearby even though it doesn’t change the pain of the transition. Rural living has its pluses but healthcare access is definitely a minus. It’s good you got some continuous sleep. Hugs and supportive vibes for you.💕

Rant certainly a necessary and acceptable. As I posted on another thread, sending you hugs for strength.

Carole, Leftover turkey makes great sandwiches.
Dinner tonight was Tuscan garlic shrimp on farfalle.

Rant on Wally….. Hugs…..

Don't blame you for ranting Wally!

Sigh. We got a telephone call this morning from MIL's assisted living place. She fell last night. She had refused the nightly bed checks and she did not have the emergency call pendant button with her, so she wasn't discovered until this morning.
She broke her femur (or her femur broke and she fell) and will need surgery to set the fracture. She is 89 years old, extremely frail, and has a heart EF of 20%, so it's likely going to be a challenge for the surgical team.
We have "lectured" her on the absolute need for keeping the pendant with her, and also that "no bed checks" was a bad idea, but….more sigh…..
Edited….
The surgical team doesn't want to surgery due to her frail condition, heart ejection fraction of 20% and (we just found out) stage 5 chronic kidney disease. Their preference is to have her go to Phoenix via air ambulance for a cardiac workup, but they are also not sure how well she would tolerate the 4-5 hour ride home.
I heard "hospice" mentioned.

Oh Eric I feel your pain having gone through much of that with my dad. Best wishes for you and Sharon.

Eric - I too feel your pain & angst. I went through it with my Mother and then 4 years later with my Dad. Both proud and by god going to do it their way.
Tomorrow was the birthday of my baby brother. He would have been 72 but died at 40. I still miss him every day.
Dinner was leftover pork roast, leftover Dill Potatoes and sauteed onion & zucchini. Tomorrow will likely be leftover tomatoes with cottage cheese, an English Muffin and a couple of peaches I bought last week if I can hold them one more day.

Eric, I’m so sorry about your MIL. Sometimes there are no good options. The same thing happened to my mother. Her heart was OK and she had surgery to pin her femur but was gone six weeks later due to sepsis. It’s a shock when you don’t expect it. Virtual hugs for you and Sharon.
Minus, Your leftovers sound delicious . It must be so hard to have missed those years you expected to have with your brother.
Dinner tonight was oven fried chicken breast, sautéed summer squash and mashed potatoes.

Eric, what a sad and typical happening. Hugs for you and Sharon and your MIL.
Hugs for Wally and her dh.
Minus, I don't recall your mentioning your brother. Hugs for you.
Dinner was Nathan's wieners heated in Bush's baked beans for dh. I had warmed up rice and turkey dish and a wiener.

Hugs all around for those of us dealing with loss and pain (and who hasn't?)…Eric, SO very sorry for you and Sharon to deal with MIL….I suspect she will be sent to a rehab center and "wait" it out there. …we do better for our pets.
I'm trying to eat 3 meals/day between sobbing and watching my husband die. Fresh hell is an understatement.

Wally, Hugs. Take care of yourself, too.
Dinner tonight was chicken parmigiana on penne.

Wally, I second the hope that you take care of yourself.
Dinner last night was a new dish for me to make. Meatballs in brown gravy with a side of boiled potatoes. I first ate this version of meatballs about 7 years ago when we were invited to the home of a local man who was a good cook. When he said he was making meatballs and gravy, I assumed the gravy was tomato gravy. To my surprise it was brown gravy and served with mashed potatoes. Very common here in MN, I learned.
I cooked the meatballs in the microwave/convection oven, using the convection function. Then added them to the brown gravy, made with the help of McCormick's. Leftovers for another meal.
I'll probably using the convection oven. Tonight will be dinner at Clancy's.

They are going to try the surgery for MIL tomorrow or Wednesday. Everyone finally agreed that a regional block with a very light sedative is the best option. The delay is to allow time for the Plavix to "go away".
I still don't know how well it will work out long (3+ months) as MIL absolutely hates doing PT.

Carole, Using the convection oven function could certainly add to your dinner repertoire. Meatballs can go in just about any sauce you can make. I’ve made them with tomato (sauce and diced/spices), salsa, gravy, stroganoff, beef broth/onion/spinach, sweet & sour, curry, middle eastern varieties. You can change up the ground meat, too (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, sausage, lamb, bison, venison.)
Eric, I hope the surgery goes well. The first time my mother broke her femur after turning 80 she learned to walk again. She had bad osteoporosis with lots of ortho surgeries over her lifetime and always did PT faithfully. The second time the doctor figured she would end up in a wheelchair but the surgery would keep her comfortable.. You just never know.
Dinner tonight was mushroom ravioli in a tomato/ground beef sauce.

To dh's disappointment, yesterday was not "meatloaf Monday" at Clancy's. One of the two specials was lasagna and salad bar. We both chose it. We enjoyed our salad with Clancy's delicious blue cheese dressing. The lasagna was not good. DH got a corner square that was mostly lasagna noodle. Mine was an interior square that was better but still dry. In the future we will call and check whether meatloaf is available before going.
Hugo's supermarket had pork country ribs on special for $1.99 a lb. yesterday. I bought a package and may cook some of the ribs in the slow cooker with barbecue sauce.

Have some spaghetti sauce in the fridge I need to use up. Going to cook some pasta and dump in the sauce.

Last night was one of DH’s favorite meals (although not mine. I love the kraut but mashed potatoes are uninteresting to me and I can’t find a smoked sausage that I like) kielbasa with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. I made cornbread from a box because I didn’t have any buttermilk and predictably it was way too sweet. I don’t add sugar to my cornbread and this was not my cup of tea.
DH volunteered to make waffles and bacon for dinner tonight and I’m never one to pass up the chance for someone else to cook.

At age 6, I had two names for the cornbread. Corncake for the sweet stuff and cornbread for the "southern style" stuff.
MIL's surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.
0 -
Eric the sweet stuff should definitely be classified as cake.
0 -
Eric: Hope you MIL's surgery goes well. Let us know.
0 -
Carole, What a disappointment when the meal you went to the restaurant for is unavailable.
Eric, That’s a good way to classify cornbread. The johnnycakes I make are a Rhode Island recipe and have no sugar in them. Hopefully your MIL’s surgery goes well.
Nance, Breakfast for dinner is always good.
Dinner tonight was coconut curry salmon on rice.

Eric, I hope your MIL does well and speedy recovery.
My DH died earlier this evening. They just took the body. Words fail me.

Wally, I am so very sorry. Condolences and hugs for you.

Wally - yes - no words. Just clasping you in my arms. We're here when you want to talk.

Hugs…Wally
