Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Monday! Still cold here, but supposed to start warming up some through the week. At least the wind chill isn't a factor right now.The whole world is very crunchy these days. Even the snow has hardened up and crunches when Sadie and I walk on it!

Goldie--Nothing like getting up to half a foot of new snow, is there? I must be very short legged, whenever I use a handicapped toilet I feel like a little kid whose feet can't touch the floor! I'm kind of looking for a new job, one where I can feel like I am really making a difference. Don't really feel that way where I am now, even though I'm sure I am. I do wonder if my age has anything to do with things, I am about 6 years from full retirement age. I wish I could use all of you as references, but since the applications ask for current or former supervisors I'm not sure I could make it work. Would be interesting to try, wouldn't it?

Janky--I hang my clothes outside all year 'round. The dryer that came with the house broke down years and years ago and I've never missed it enough to get it fixed. Maybe once a year I have to lug some clothes to a laundromat to use a dryer due to being in a pinch. I've heard that Bohemian Rhapsody is a great movie. Hope you enjoy it.

Jazzy--looking forward to the PM, thanks!

Muddling--Sounds like you have something fun to watch all year long!

LomLIn--Seems like everyone's first word of advice is to cut back or stop drinking alcohol. Like that's ever going to happen for me! I mean, really, you know that my one or two drinks a night will give me a bc recurrence when you go to such lengths to say you don't know why I got it in the first place?Does not make sense to me.Love the No More Reading! As to not addressing the blood pressure, the new standards would call 140/90 hypertensive, prehypertensive is now 120/85.They want everyone walking around with blood pressures of less than 110/70.

Edwards750--My BP goes up when I don't have my coffee. I live on the stuff, can drink it all day long. I do need to drink more water, though.

Jazzy--Good advice for LomLin. Checking the BP at home is pretty important, many people only have high BP readings in the doctor's office, the "White Coat Syndrome". And it make it easy to experiment and see if the doc's advice is good for you or not.

Mema--Are you really getting chemo the day before surgery? That seems odd to me. Good for you for making progress in the garage! Nothing like a surgery date to create motivation.

Chi--Good point about the salt intake connection.Turns out that only a small percentage of people have salt sensitive blood pressure.

    Celia--good advice.

Cammy--Your blood pressure could be one reason you get dizzy sometimes. If it's 95 at the docs, imagine what it is at home! I can just imagine what my reference list would look like with all of you on it, it would be pages and pages long! I sleep in my recliner once in a while, it's very comfortable! Cute kitty!

    DOTD:

    Snow on the Beach

    • 1/2 cup coconut cream
    • 1/2 cup Blue Curaçao
    • 1/2 cup white rum
    • 2 cups ice
    • Small dish water
    • 1/4 cup white or blue sugar crystals

How to Make a Snow on the Beach Martini

Place the coconut cream, ice and alcohols in a good quality blender and mix well, until ice is a consistent and smooth texture.

Dip the edge of the martini glass about 1/4 inch into water, and then dip into a dish filled with the sugar crystals to create a sugared rim. Repeat with 4 glasses.

Pour 1/4 of the cocktail mixture into each glass and serve.

    Serves 4.

Lomlin- both my PCP and endocrinologist have helped to manage my BP issues. The endocrin I no longer saw had me taking a drug that help both blood sugar and BP but I stopped it as the coupon I had for it expired and it was $95 a month. I went back to metformin for sugars and licinopril for BP and doing fine.

Do you have any heart issues? If yes, it makes sense the cardiologist would manage this.

Cami- congrats on the good scans. Now it's Mema's and Goldie's turn to make it three for three on good scans.

I think age may play a factor in the BP. I remember going to the doctor when I was in my 20s to 30s and at times they couldn't get anything to read on their cuff. Another thing I don't get, is why do they put the cuff over your clothes? I thought you needed to take it on your bare arm. I do have a cuff at home and pretty much is steady in the 140/85-90, sometimes higher.

Diane - I thing it is a genetic make up that determines your BP and/or age. I do drink everyday, which bothers my doctors.

Jazzy - I do use a cuff, not a whole lot of difference between the docs readings and mine. I brought mine in to a doc to see if it was reading right and they didn't even bother looking at it.

ChiSandy - Sounds like your doing good, I will be 65 this year. I feel like I have aged 10 years in a period of 8 months.

CeliaC - Deep breaths, that's a good idea.

Camillegal - no wonder you are dizzy, that is pretty low BP. You must be tired a lot, too, from it. Cute kitty. I cut my own hair too. Mine is still brown with gray highlights, by nature, not dyed.

NM - yeah right. Well put statement, you know that my one or two drinks a night will give me a BC recurrence when you go to such lengths to say you don't know why I got it in the first place! I'm looking for a new job for the exact same reason as yourself. I am only less than 2 years away from retirement, but I doubt that is going to happen, not ready yet, however, in looking for a job I wonder if that is a deterrent in hiring.

Had to do some shoveling yesterday, not much snow, just a couple of inches, roads are cleared off. I use this as my exercise of the day. This I don't mind.

    HI again.....

    Just poopin in...

Jazzy I didn't have scans this time around, I'm just going for blood work.

LomLin I have had my BP read of course thruout the day whenever I'm in the hospital and for some reason it doesn't bother me and then it usually runs about 90/over mid to high 30"s---that's why when I get dizzy and fall I blame it on that <of course everyone else says I'm clumsy> I am tho.

Oh Lori I forgot the lashes are for real. There's one company called thrive and a couple more now too, and for my Dr. to notice, I figure it's better than what I have used.

OK my phone is crazy I stopped my post about 1/2 hr. ago and here I am. soo......I'll catch u all later, well not literally.

    Good morning!

My blood pressure is under control with a low dosage of Losartan HCTZ. Unless my hisband has driven me to the doctor! He is the definition of road rage and it makes me VERY anxious. Maybe that is also why I enjoy my cocktails???? It is interesting that the BP med is a diuretic and I am drinking much water now, so the result is lots of trips to the bathroom. Anyway, feeling good today. I start back on Chemo this week and will see about any side effects. Nothing so far! 🤗

I am 65 yrs old and have two cats. I walk three miles every other day, do yard work, house work, and stay as active as possible. I really do not want to have this diagnosis change anything, but may have to relax my control. I did retire after 30 years of working, but again, because I wanted to. I enjoy this group because everyone seems so positive. Thanks so much!!!

I hear ya JCS on the husband driving, mine makes me very anxious, too. With winter here in Illinois I don't get out to walk, but when the warmer weather is around I do about 3 to 5 miles in the morning on the weekends. And also do yard work, I am such a hermit when it comes to cold weather. I hate exercising! Glad you joined the group.

Had my penultimate back PT appt at 9am. Got back home to find Bob still asleep and my housekeeper emptying the cabinet below the kitchen sink--it leaked so much overnight that there was water on the basement stairs. We figured out the culprit is the integrated pull-out sprayer hose--it developed a hole in the tubing. Plumber confirmed that's the problem--it's cheaper to replace the whole faucet than to fix or replace the hose. We wanted one of those commercial-style all-metal faucets, but we don't have enough undercabinet clearance. So we went with the same model, which the plumber had on his truck. (Apparently, 5 years is par for the course these days for the lifespan of all but the most expensive modern kitchen faucets.

"This old house is falling down around my ears," goes the Richard Thompson song "Dimming of the Day." Bathtub needs re-caulking and re-grouting (my "new" kitchen ceiling, the old one having had to be gutted & replaced in 2017 after a leaking toilet tank bold flooded the bathroom above) is showing some signs of bubbling in the paint again). Windows need replacing or at least re-framing. Suspended tile ceiling in the upstairs office (through which a raccoon once fell) is buckling (in a different area than the patched part). Angle of gutters is such that the water pours onto the deck instead of into the downspout. And my indoor staircase up to the bedrooms is creaky and in danger of at least one step failing. Then there are the air leaks in the front room from gaps in crown molding and wall joints.

A lot of our problems stem from the fact that many of the repairs, restorations and "improvements" had been done not by licensed pros but by the seller (an English Lit. prof) and his sons. We found this out when during a massive storm on the day we were supposed to move in, the flat section of the roof leaked like a sieve. We had the realtor's spec sheet, which listed that it was only 2 years old--and flat roofs carry 5-yr. warranties. So I called the seller and asked who was the roofer so we could enforce the warranty. "Me," he said. He & his kids had also put up the suspended ceilings in the office & dining room (we had the latter--originally with "shiplap" walls--completely redone).

It gets crazier. The house, built in 1908, had originally been a standard Chicago "LSB" ("large stucco box," basically a bungalow on steroids). It, like the others on our block, had a front porch, with the front door opening to the foyer & living room. There was no "front room" per se, just that open porch. Upstairs there were four bedrooms and a small bath, plus another bedroom and sitting room in the attic & dormers. But after WWII, when housing was in high demand, the then-owner (who sold it to our seller) converted it to a dubiously-legal two-flat: enclosing the front porch, extending the rear of the house into the back yard by at least 8 feet (providing a den and breakfast area in the kitchen), tiling the foyer floor and enclosing the interior staircase behind paneling to make a first-floor "landlord" apt. Upstairs the rental apt. was created by merging the two front bedrooms into one full-width living room, turning one small bedroom into a kitchen, extending the other small bedroom, and creating a dining room (linoleum flooring) next to it in the extension. When our seller bought it, he had six kids, and so he knocked out the wall separating the foyer from the living room (but keeping the paneling) and turned every bit of space he could into bedrooms--including even creating a mini-loft in the crawl space at the back of the basement). And he and his sons built a deck out back. The upstairs living room became the master bedroom, the makeshift kitchen a pass-through laundry room and the makeshift dining room a home office.

We've spent much of the last 30 years slowly reclaiming our home's character as a fin-de-siecle single family house, and gradually correcting the DIY goofs. Words to live by: Never give a PhD access to power tools.

I will definitely need a drink tonight, as we just dropped four Benjamins on the sink & installation and are about to blow several more on a handyman (recommended by the plumber) for the bathtub re-caulk & re-grout. (We wouldn't dare try to DIY). And if that wasn't enough, we got a letter from the city Water Dept. informing us that a survey of a sample of 286 homes in which they'd installed free water meters, upon testing after meter installation 17% of the houses' tap water exceeded EPA's acceptable lead levels. So now we are on the waiting list for free water testing. In the meantime, they're offering all water-metered households a solution: a free Brita pitcher and 6 filters. Oh boy.

Good Morning, Loungettes! It continues to warm here, was up to almost 20 degrees at one point yesterday. Got a call from one of the applications I put out over the weekend. So now I have an interview appointment for a Staff Educator position at one of the local nursing homes on Thursday. We'll see how it goes, I have some questions and I'm sure they have some for me.One benefit of this job is that I might be able to take Sadie to work with me from time to time. Wouldn't she just love that much attention!

LonLin--A blood pressure cuff should not be placed over clothing. That makes the reading inaccurate. Good idea to monitor your blood pressure at home.Good luck in the job search.I've got about 5 years before full retirement benefits, and need to talk to someone about the retirement accounts I have and when/if I can afford to retire. And snow shoveling is Good exercise!

Cammy--Sounds like you are having another busy day, good sign of a thriving business, and good for your nephew!

Librarian--Keep an eye on your blood pressure, it's not uncommon for people on chemo to have lower than usual blood pressures and to need to come off their blood pressure meds during treatment. So if you start feeling really tired or have dizzy spells, check your BP.I used to walk 3 miles most days of the week, really need to start that up again, and have been having a really hard time with getting motivated.Any hints?

Chi--ah, the joys of home ownership!

    Roses in the Snow

    Ingredients

    • 1 1/2 ounces gin
    • 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed juice from 1 lemon
    • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (see note)
    • 3/4 ounce rosewater
    • 1 egg white
    • 2 ounces club soda
    • 3 dashes Peychaud's Bitters

    Directions

    1. 1.
Add gin, lemon, simple syrup, rosewater, and eggwhite to a cocktail shaker. Dry shake (without ice) to incorporate eggwhite, about 30 seconds. Fill shaker with ice and shake until frothy, about 30 seconds longer.
    2. 2.
Double strain by pouring through a bar strainer into a fine-mesh or conical strainer set in a highball glass filled with ice. Top drink with club soda and bitters. Gently stir and serve.

Hello my favorite Lounge Lizards! Didn't have time to post yesterday, had to leave early as DH had doc appt. And as mentioned earlier, a hella muddy mess getting out of here and worse on our return, but we made it. Lots of talk going on, I likey! I don't have BP problems, but whenever I am at the oncs office, it's always high, even tho I don't feel anxious or nervous at all. Now my next appt. I will be feeling anxious and noyvis.

Sue, my prayers are with you too my LDB. I hope you get enough out of the garage to put your van in it.

Lom, my DH only sees our primary for his high BP. I can't believe they didn't look at your BP monitor. Does your keep your readings, so you can go back and look at them, ours does. And shoveling snow definately counts as exercise. What kind of work do you do, or looking for?

Cami my goodness, that is some low BP on you! No wonder you get dizzy and fall. Cute lil kitty ear twitching. I need to check out that mascara, I hope it's not expensive.

NM, I guess height, or lack there of, would have lots to do with sitting on a handicapped toilet! I am 5'9". But you did give me a little chuckle. And my dear, you ARE and DO make a difference. Maybe not to your co workers, but to your patients you DO. Wow, and interview already, and it's teaching? AND, to be able to take Miss Sadie on occasion? What could be better! If you got this position, would you still be working hospice?

Janky, I hang my clothes out all year too, and if not out side, on my closed in porch or even in the house.

JCS, my husband makes me noyvis too when he drives. He does have the rage, but he drives so close to the center yellow line, getting close to the on coming traffic. Sometimes I see the other drivers move over to their right. I said something to him about it, and he said something like because I was sitting on the passenger side, I didn't know right where the tires were....BS!

Sandy, so awesome you live in such an old home, so I guess there is reason for things to need fixing.

    NativeMaine,

It is useful to have a “walking buddy”. My husband usually goes with me and we argue about politics! If there is no one to walk with it is fun to listen to an audio book. I used to love that before my husband started tagging along. Our local public library has a website where audio books can be borrowed for no charge and kept for three weeks. Then they just disappear from your phone! No need to spend any money. My cousin lives in Sweden, Maine and walks her dog in the snow daily. She is much younger and does complain some about the cold. 🤪 I do not walk in the rain, but will go if cold or hot and humid.

And, I will watch my blood pressure. Just too much to think about these days. I try to look for the bright spots and have a good laugh daily. My kids are coming for dinner tonight so that will help keep things fun.

Now, on to healthier eating and drinking (most of the time).

I need to catch up with all of you loungettes, my brain has been a little mushy lately. I’m taking my oldest daughter to a cheer competition this weekend so waiting until next Monday to start the Tamoxifen. Thinking positive about it!

Hope you all will raise a glass of something with me today!

JCS, Lom etc. - you have found a really great place for support, knowledge (whether you want it or not ;) ) - My blood pressure, which I was taking meds for 5 years prior to dx and treatment, went down during my chemo and now I take 1/2 of the dose which is fine with me. I had it taken today and it is normal (not a word often used when referring to me ha ha)

JCS - I was a high school librarian for 23 years, retired 3 years ago and was dx with bc 1 year into it :( I have 1 cat and just love having him around to purr and snuggle with, Levi is not as grumpy as Bob my hubby of 44 years...I turned 65 in December :)

NM, goldie - so lucky to line dry year round! I will put in a line in the spring and may try winter drying but seriously doubt it.

Jazzy, NM - Bohemian Rhapsody was a really, really good movie, especially if you like Queen's music! Jazzy I had scans last Wednesday and got back stable results, yayyy. Dang my neutrophils were at .4 so I have to delay my Ibrance for another week...

Memasue - are you decluttering? I need help with that for sure, my van has not seen inside the garage for years...

Wiggin - I'll join you in a drink, ask the 'tender for a red wine for me please.

    Cheers! Janice

Wigging, yay! Guess I'll finish the last of that bottle of Ch. de Cazeneuve I have chilling in the fridge. Where is your Restaurant Week? Ours is about to start here in Chicago. (I love Moët--is yours Brut Imperial or White Star? White Star is just about the only "extra dry" I can stand--other brands are too sweet for me. I like bruts and looove the zero-dosage bruts "sauvage" or "zero")!

Well, I got talked down off the ledge this morning. The handyman came by and will do the grout tomorrow (scraping by hand rather than machine-grinding, because the tiles are so close together). It'll dry overnight and then Thurs.he'll get down to business on the caulk. He's also going to tighten the shower supply pipe so the escutcheon will lie flush to the tile and no back-spray can get into the wall. Of course, he will have to go through the wall in the guest room to do that, but he will not only fix that hole he makes but the other two that previous plumbers did. And he says he can fix (shore up) the few creaking risers without replacing the entire staircase. After that, fix the sagging suspended tile ceiling in the office.

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Hump Day! And my TGIF day. We're having a temperature roller coaster here.Going to get up to and maybe into the 30's during the day today, then be 25 below the donut tonight.Just Brrrrrr. So glad I've got Sadie to help keep me warm at night!

Goldie--Glad you got through the mud to the Onc. Sounds like you have a bit of White Coat Hypertension, which I bet a lot of us have by now. No one likes going to the doc, and going to the Onc is even worse! The position I'm interviewing for is a Staff Educator position in a local nursing home. So I wouldn't be doing Hospice specifically, but I will be involved in Hospice education in support of the direct caregiving staff. And I'm sure there will be some direct patient care from time to time, too. But, I've got some questions to ask and some details to check on before I make any decisions, but that's what an interview is all about, right? Glad my toilet troubles could give you a giggle!

Librarian--I'll have to check into finding a walking buddy. I do listen to audiobooks quite a bit, and was doing that when I was walking before. I had forgotten about being able to borrow audio books from a library. My town is too small tohave a library, so I would have to pay to use one of the neighboring town's libraries, or check out the Maine State Library system. When I was walking regularly before I walked in any weather except falling snow.

Wigging--no chemo?HOORAY!Do you take anything for depression? I was on antidepressantmedication before bc and didn't stay on tamoxifen cuz the Prozac interfered with the working of the tamoxifen and I couldn't stand being off the antidepressant. So glad you like your MO, that makes a huge difference. What a nice meal to celebrate with! I will open a bottle of bubbly, probably sparkling rose, when I get home from work this afternoon! And the rule in the lounge is to not worry about ketchuping, we all know how it is.Just jump in the pool and swim up to the bar and join the convo!

Janky--hanging laundry out in the winter makes for some pretty cold fingers and isn't for everyone. I do have a rack I use inside the house when the weather is wet or very cold like it's going to be this coming weekend. Going to be an weekend of indoor laundry drying!Adds humidity which is very welcome with the new heat pump blowing warm air into the house! Hooray for stable scans!Boo for the neutrophil count. I'll have to see if anyone I know wants to go see that movie.

Chi--wonderful handyman you have there! So glad he can fix so many thing without major renovations.

This grapefruit and elderflower cocktail is quick and easy to make with gin (or vodka).

    Ingredients:

Not going to write much, got sick yesterday, I think food poisoning. Horrible stomach cramps, explosive "D", throwing up. Sore from laying in bed for so long. Back sore from that too as well as tightening up when the cramping comes. Feeling a bit better this morning, the cramping is not as bad, but bad enough.

JCS, so funny that you and DH argue about politics when you go walking.

Wiggy, greatest reason to celebrate. I know of a few gals that had chemo and after they were done, were told it wasn't needed!

Janky, having a drink for you as well on stable scans.

Wow Sandy, that sounds like a lot of work you have to have done on the house.

Lori, it's possible you caught norovirus from another patient at your doctor's office. It comes on fast & strong, but it shouldn't last more than a day & a half. Crappy way to lose weight...

Wiggy, Kim--there are certain antidepressants that don't compete with tamoxifen for the same enzymatic pathway. And most SSRIs (including Wellbutrin, which I take) are fine to take with AIs.

Oh Lori so sorry that ur sick,Food poisoning??? OMG ur so sensitive with that...I hope it just goes away today.

BTW thank u all, me included, talking about B.P..I had a complete panic attack when I saw the cuff coming at me. It cam on in 3 seconds and I couldn't stop shaking and my breathin was laborious, They tried to calm me down but forget it. So my top number was HIGH my bottom OK and then I was better.Jeez I'm so weak when it comes to my brain, oh and no one ever told me how important vitamin D was, I'm super low and it can be screwing up lately. Stupid stuff here, Chit I need a big body scan as soon as I make an app't--they aggravate me <the Drs.>

We should have a whole magnum of champagne cjz I know Lori' scan will be goo and we'll all have it to share when our Tenders make us brunch Sunday.

I get my BeneFit "They're Real" (both mascara & tinted primer) at either BeneFit boutiques (we have several in Chicago), Ulta or Sephora. Now, you should always throw away mascara 3 mos. after you start using it, to avoid an eye infection. I hate throwing out a full-size tube with at least half the mascara remaining, and the full-size isn't cheap (I think $24). So here's what I do: I buy the travel size for $10. Lasts almost 3 months. Sephora has the travel size both online and (usually) at the "impulse buy" lane next to the cashier. (Haven't seen the travel size at Ulta). Don't buy it off eBay--it's almost certainly a knockoff and who knows what's in there! (A decent budget alternative, if you have a Kiko boutique near you, is Kiko black or brown--about $3).

One peeve I have about mascara ads is that they never show the product on naked lashes--most have fine print stating that the photos show it on eyes enhanced with "lash inserts" (and some even say "simulation of product on lash inserts"--yup, they Photoshop the image)! What I like about buying direct at a BeneFit boutique, Sephora, or Ulta is that the testers don't have brushes--but there are disposable applicators to use with them to avoid contamination. (And the sales staff should be the ones to apply it). You see the result right then & there--unlike the crapshoot that is the drugstore beauty aisle.

ChISandy-I love Sephora. So smart about the travel size mascara!! My Moët was the white star, I believe. It was a beautiful color and I just enjoyed every sip. Charleston SC is where "my" restaurant week is. I would love a slice of deep dish pizza every now and then from your town!

    Camilegal-yes!!! Sunday brunch!

Native Maine-yes...I am on lexapro which is good because it is “allowed” on tamoxifen. Pure luck there.

    Warm hugs to all!

    Just poopin in,

Sandy I always liked Sephora and bought most of my face and make-up there and used a lot of philosophy for facial and perfumes. But over time not being able to shop and now Leslie can't do any for me, I depend on-line to shop and of course I don't make the money I made before so I am a real bargain shopper. So over time I've found sites that carry some of the products but much cheaper and of course products that I never heard of LOL but facial stuff I do use the better products. Cuz that needs all it can get. But no matter what mascara I have used in these years u could never tell cuz my lashes are so short and few, so I had to keep trying and finally people think my lashes have come back and my eyes look brighter or I would never pay attention to these goofy ads. Oh and then I saw u can buy so many Sephora products on HSN and QVC much cheaper. So I started on there too. I used to be frugal, now I'm just plain cheap.

I know I'm blabbering like I do sometimes but I slept from 6=9pm. My phone woke me and I thought it was like 5am for work, well it was work but at 9pm. OK I'll stop. See you later.

Still sick. I don't think it's food poisoning or noro. I did run a very low grade fever yesterday, struggling to reach 100. As for throwing up, that only happened twice. The waves of pain are not as intense, and don't seem to be lasting as long. When the wave of pain comes across, it feels like its right below the middle of my rib cage, however my tummy hurts to the touch just below the belly button. Rib area in my back is sore now, from tensing up and laying around for the last 2 days.

Sandy, I wasn't at my doctor, it was my husband's dermatologist, which I guess you can get sick ANYWHERE!

Hoping no one is getting caught in these terrible storms that are coming across the US.

Had a great day yesterday. Learned how to make smoothies with a friend. She had fantasticideas about how to freeze things and make single freezer packs for a daily smoothie. We laughed about the mess we made in my kitchen! Then we went shopping at T. J. Maxx. Sounds boring, but we have such fun looking through things and finding bargains. It was as normal a day as I have had since the diagnosis! Our South Carolina Gamecocks even won their basketball game. I did have a couple of glasses of wine to make it a complete day. No cold rain yesterday or today!!! It will come back over the weekend and I have chemo on Friday. All in all, good times!!! Hope everyone is having a good week. Love that champagne cocktail. 🍾❤️
