Jazzy, I think we've caught Happy's intestinal problems early--no diarrhea, he's as cuddly and rambunctious as ever. Not losing weight...yet. If we get a handle on this quickly the vet thinks he has 2-3 yrs of remission ahead--and after a second course of treatment maybe another year. (If all it is is IBD, we still have to watch his bloodwork to make sure it doesn't become lymphoma).

I am transitioning his food from the chicken-based Hill's "i/d" to the Royal Canin rabbit-pea-based "select protein" formula--tonight I mixed half and half and he seemed to like it. (Not sure about the new hydrolyzed soy protein kibble to which we're switching him--mixing equal parts of it and his Purina Senior Indoor). It seems like a million years ago--instead of 3 weeks--that they were both tucking into Friskies, 9 Lives, Blue Buffalo, Sheba and 365 Organic wet food after we ran out of Heidi's Royal Canin Urinary SO Moderate Calorie, which she detested because it was chunks in gravy--we had to mash it up or she wouldn't touch it. She's on the Hill's paté version now and grudgingly eats it at every other feeding--I have to warm it up, season it with catnip and probiotic, and bury treats in it. Her finickiness is due partly to being a little princess and partly to fear (justified) that Happy will chase her away to eat it (I let him eat her crumbs now that I know why he's so ravenous--I'm hoping to keep his weight steady and get enough nutrients into his little system). For awhile, his kibble was Rachel Ray Nutrish, but when that Chinese additive scare surfaced I stopped feeding it to him and switched back to Purina. I'm haunted by the thought that the Nutrish may have contributed to his IBD and perhaps lymphoma.

Hoping the massive storms we're having don't short out the garage electric supply line--Bob has a long day tomorrow and getting from the West Loop (where his Union Health gig is) to his office out by Midway and then home would be frightfully expensive even via Uber or Lyft. And that's assuming he doesn't have to visit any hospitals or nursing homes. Meanwhile, I was sitting there guarding Heidi's food as she ate when my wrist started buzzing like crazy--just like the signal I get when my watch thinks I've fallen. I looked at and saw the emergency alert--flash flood warnings in low-lying areas. Then every mobile device in the house (both iPads, both our phones) began beeping with the same warning.

Well, if I was second-guessing the Glenview Park District's decision to cancel Sunday's Grove Folk Festival (b'bye, several hundred bucks) due to flooding on part of the grounds, despite a clear forecast for Sunday, I'm a believer now. The park abuts the Desplaines River--'nuff said. I am devoutly grateful to be four big blocks (slightly uphilll) away from Sheridan Rd., with high-rises between it and the beach. Used to wish I were closer, but not now. We've already lost half our north side beachfronts due to rising lake levels, but the high-rise condo buildings themselves--at least the subterranean garages--are in danger. Last time it stormed and flooded like this it was 1987, and our temple's main sanctuary took on a few inches of water. (It's on the lake, with a mini-beach off the parking lot). Good thing Rosh Hashonah services ended yesterday. Hope things dry out by Yom Kippur. (There's an online livestream service from the Nashuva congregation in L.A., which I've watched occasionally when housebound on Yom Kippur--hope we don't have to resort to that this year).

DOTD tonight with leftover roast chicken: Jean Paul 2018 Gascogne dry rosé. Wish I'd had some last night, when it was 90F.

    Mornin Ladies,

Chit I totally wasn't here yesterday, I thought I was, Boing. My niece came over for my shower today and we talked about 3 hrs. So it was a long session, and the day flew by.

OK Lori I saw the pics as usual u always look so good. The cameras like u or the phones do. And I had to put that pic. up cuz a couple of u have seen Joey a few yrs. ago when I towered over him. Lori these yrs. have gone so fast and I still member u trying to teach me some stuff on the puter and I still haven't learned. And Jazzy was so kind to send Joey an autographed music thing from a concert she went to and he still is playing the clarinet so he really appreciated it., And when Dara came Joey and her played a duet and she sent him a flute which he still practices on. Oh and he's sick again, that kid.

My kids r going to a wedding Saturday nite so Joey and I have our alone nite so we'll watch a scary movie and dinner. See the fun I'm having.

Everything's pretty quiet around here this week. Next week Marty gets his tonsils out, LOL I can''t help it. And I haven't slept yet out of Xanax and can't fill til Sat. Love these rules.

well I'll poop in later and see what happening.

    LUBS U ALL

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Thirsty Thursday! Sorry to miss yesterday, but I just could not drag my butt out of bed until the very last minute, I was so tired. Not sure why, went to bed early, slept pretty well, but just did not want to move when the alarm went off. Sadie and I were so warm and comfy. Got a PCP appointment this ayem--routine physical, flu shot, nothing exciting, then working 3 to 11 peeyem teaching CPR. Tomorrow I get to sleep in, and go to work in the evening and teach CPR to the overnight crew. It'll probably take all weekend to get myself straightened around again! Sadie would say Hi to everyone but she's curled up in the recliner snoring.

Goldie--the timer for the lamp works really, really well! Thanks for the idea!

Cammy--Golden Girls is a great show. I watch it sometimes, and I'm not a big sitcom fan. That one at least was funny most times without being crude. Yeah, this week's hours area bit crazy, but that's what it takes to make sure our residents are getting the best care. I don't mind toomuch, I just make sure to schedule things so I can catch up on my sleep and aren't getting too tired out, especially now that flu season is here.

Jazzy--oh, my, how hard for you to be the one to hardline your sister. Someone needs to do that, though, sometimes. Aw, poor fur babies!

Chi--sounds like you caught your baby's problems early, and have a plan to get and keep them under control. And I'm glad you are safe from flooding, too.

Cammy--So sorry to hear that Joey is sick again! Not bad, I hope. All those drug rules are really only creating problems for the people who legitimately need the medications, and aren't stopping the misusers from getting them. Such a pain in the anatomy.

    Last Call to Porter

    • 1 oz. Knob Creek Bourbon
    • 1/2 oz. Green Chartreuse
    • 1/2 oz. Benedictine
    • Porter beer

Shake up the hard liquor until it's fit to burst. Strain into a coupe glass, then flood the mix with your favorite porter beer (Katie recommends Milwaukee's own Mudpuppy Porter). Don't drink it in a basement.

Sandy, glad to hear your fur baby is doing better and that he may be with you for a few more years. Sorry about all the flooding. Mother Nature has not been very kind this year, that's for sure.

Cami yes, Joey has grown soooooo much! The picute of you and him are adorable. I did try to teach you things, lol. I'm sure Joey could show you some things, you should ask him. I'm happy to see Les and Marty go out and have some fun. And oh my, have tonsils out in a an adult. I've always heard that's pretty bad. And Les still has to have surgery, right?

NM, you must be busy with work.

I had brought back those peaches from Utah, I think I mentioned it. I made 6 half pints of freezer jam, more today and yester made a peach crisp. Super yummy with some vanilla ice cream!

Good morning! I think I am about to kick this cold. Spent two days on the couch reading and resting. Today I will play cards and then go to First Thursday downtown. Merchants, bands and other activities are on Main Street for all to see. There are beer and wine tastings well as small bites offered by restaurants. Of course, it is supposed to be 96 degrees today! A little warm for strolling outdoors, but the sun goes down earlier now. Chemo tomorrow. Then we head to the beach for a few days with some very close friends.

One of my cats has an interesting activity. I call it reverse sneezing. He cleans himself prior to this sneezing. When I checked the Internet, some cats have a sensitive soft palate that hair tickles. I also think he should not be eating the special cat food we feed to the female for her bladder issues.Anyway, now feeding is complicated. The male cat gets wet food and the female gets her special dry food in another room. He is a food bully and resents her being fed somewhere he cannot get to. All of this is going to make it difficult for the person that cares for them when we are gone. May just let her feed them both the dry food so all goes smoothly.

Wish I could make some of these drinks! Guess I will stick to my wine. This has been a dry week due to medication and not feeling so great. Last weekend there was over consumption, so I needed to get on the wagon!

    Take care, everyone!

Cute! I had vowed not to buy any Pinktober stuff this year, but Advocate (Bob's on staff on one of its hospitals) and the Bears have teamed up for a 100th Bears anniversary "Real Bears Fans Wear Pink" T-shirt (navy with pink & white graphics), but this time long-sleeved to be more practical for "football weather." So I ordered an XL for me and 2X for Bob (in the past, it was the reverse)!

Chilly again today. Turns out the flooding last night came closer than I'd expected: for awhille overnight, ALL of Lake Shore Dr., from Monroe St. downtown to its north end at Hollywood Ave. up here, was closed due to viaduct flooding. (Hollywood & Sheridan is a scant mile SE of us). So far so good on the garage door working.

Found an oat milk (Califia Unsweetened) that both tastes decent and has fewer sugars & net carbs than low-carb ultra-filtered milk. Not only that, but it froths OK in my (very finicky) Aeroccino; will try it with the regular espresso machine's steam wand. Oatly Barista is great, but extremely carby. I keep it around for my vegan P.C. friends who consider me an eco-criminal for using almond milk and eating almonds (because growing almonds is so water-intensive).

Had only 4 hrs. sleep last night--went to bed at 3, after taking my CBD & melatonin at 2, and 2 drops of CBN-blend sleep tincture at bedside. Tossed and turned for THREE hours--without earplugs, Bob's snoring (and now coughing--he refuses to see a colleague or Urgent Care, and had pneumonia in the past) kept me awake. But with earplugs, my "pulsatile tinnitus" (which I get only when lying down) was driving me nuts. Sounds like someone repeatedly sticking a shovel into cat litter, or marching on crunchy snow. My BP (I test it daily) was normal. Then I got a nasty throat tickle, so I gave in and took cough medicine, and when I got back to bed loosened the earplugs a little. Just as I was about to drift off at 6:30...Bob's alarm went off. Finally fell asleep and had four hours of decent dreaming...but was awakened by both Heidi wanting to knead and then horrible R foot (mainly toe) cramps. Vowing to nap later, I stumbled downstairs, back sore...to discover that the only night meds I'd taken were the CBD and melatonin (which I take first so they'll kick in). D'OH! No Xanax, Baclofen nor Zyrtec last night. No wonder I couldn't sleep and my back was sore! I'd also laid off the Lasix the last few days, so that (and lack of the potassium I occasionally take the night before) may have contributed to the pulsing. Gotta see an ENT about that--or maybe have Bob listen to my carotids in case he hears a "bruit" that warrants cardiological investigation.

    Mornin' ladies,

JC u better have kicked that but out cuz u have lottsa partying to catch up on. I know don't know what half of the things that u put in these drinks we have but they always look good to me. And I was a bartender yrs. ago, Hey I didn't say I was a good bartender, but it paid the bills. Just feel good and enjoy.

Kim u must have really been tired. Me thinks u push urself to much, but then again u always have and ur kind heart makes u do it more.

Lori yum with what u made. I knew u would find something to preserve. U really enjoy doing those things. Actually u don't really find many people doing that any more. Yep Les needs 2 more surgeries actually but she needs to lose weight so it's not an emergency just things have to be fixed.

Sandy we have had a lot of rain. I read the DuPage river is all over the place. I never heard of the DuPage river,. Chicago river yes. So it must be up your way too. U know I remember when I would just go to sleep at .nite, now I have to igure the times of meds to actually get to sleep, but I'm always tired. Oh but that's why I always sleep with the TV on, my ears drive me crazy, <ok crazier> And ur weight .loss sounds really good.

    Hey Teka.

Jazzy now those balloons are scarier in a whole different way. They look super high. I'd faint.

For some reason I never got into pink October, first of all I never liked bows <unless it was all diamonds>, never crazy about the color pink and considering half of my family were targets just didn't go with it.

OK ladies hope ur day is good, it's cloudy here but who knows

ood Afternoon, Loungettes!Got home near midnight after CPR classes yesterday, didn't go to bed until almost 2 ayem, slept till 11 ayem. My poor system doesn't know if it's coming or going, and tonight's class starts at 11 peeyem and runs until 3 ayem! Going to be an interesting night. But that's OK. I'm thinking of taking Sadie with me tonight, I think she'll just curl up and sleep through most of the class. Had my appointment with the new PCP yesterday morning, nice doc but he's pushing for me to see a gastroenterologist to manage the Barrett's esophagus and pulmonologist to manage the asthma, and maybe even go back to the BS for bc surveillance. I worked hard to get rid of all those specialists so I can keep the whole health care appointment thing to a minimum! I let him send a referral to the gastro, but that's it for now, and I'll decide if I keep that one after the referral appointment. Got my flu shot, so work is happy.

    Goldie--That drink looks MARVELOUS!

Librarian--glad to hear the cold is easing. The First Thursday sounds like a lot of fun, if a bit warm. I've heard of dogs reverse sneezing, Sadie does it sometimes, but I hadn't heard of cats doing it! Poor kitty. Amazing how complicated it can get to feed the furbabies.

    Jazzy--WOW!

Happy Pinktober! I really don't go in for all the pink stuff, but, hey, whatever makes people's boats float.

Chi--I am constantly amazed at the variety of milks that are available these days. And it sounds like there is coming a time when nothing can be eaten that doesn't have an adverse effect on the ecosystem, either too much water, or not enough something else, or not diverse enough or too old or too new, something. Sorry about the trouble you had sleeping. That is not fun.

Karen-- I often wonder how much money from all the pink stuff actually gets to research or other helpful uses. I've got a couple of places I do donate too, BCO is one, but they've got to pass the 10% test--10% or less of the money taken is used for admin or non-research, non-direct support expenses. Very few organizations can show that.

Cammy Cat--I'm actually not doing too badly in the tired department. I have learned to be careful to make sure I get at least 6 hours if not 8 hours of sleep time in between work shifts.

Karen keep us posted on any reactions please.

Kim I'm always on ur case, buuut I member how sick u got from being so run down <altho it did change a lot of things for u, in a good way> and I just have my need to watch over u. After all even tho ur the nurse, ehhh sometimes u tend to overdo so I nudge u a little.

I can't believe the time of yr. already. I know I keep on saying it but these yrs have flown by. Lori do u realize and Kim too, I've known u for over 7 yrs. oooo Dara too. And ur all still babies to me, but oh so much on the ball. And some of u almost as long, Jazy, Teka...I'm so happy about that. It's how fast time goes and along the way I've met great women and for that I am blessed that u all let me blabber away. OK enough of me eing all floopy.

Oh oh oh I can renew my Xanax today YaY I was a couple short this last month and as I have announced before I am an addict, and I admit it. Mostly I haven't slept well.LOL

Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Cami, they won't let Les have surgery unless she loses weight? You also mentioned that Joey was sick again, how's he doing? I bet you were a hoot as a bartender! Nope, no drink for just two people, can you imagine the fight in here!!!!

NM, I knew those cray cray hours would have an affect on you, but good for you for making sure you get that sleep in. Sadie will be glad if you take her. As for new docs, not sure what to say. I guess I would go at least once to make sure everything is on the up and up.

Was a sad day yesterday, most of you know, lost an aquaintance from my dentist's office. She hasn't worked there in a while, due to stage IV cancer. But we shared when she was first diagnosed and then again with the stage IV arrived. Eventually she had to quit work, had to have a rod put in her hip. Refused Tamoxafin after being on it a short while. I can only assume that it spread to an organ and the is what caused the death. Only 51 years old and such a sweet person.

Balloon fiesta has started and some are going up, but we have a foggy morning after the rain. It has been raining, but it cleared out late afternoon yesterday. Balloons are trying! For those of you on FB with me, I have a live watch party going on right now.

I found this really great video from 2 years ago I wanted to share with you. It totally captures the essence of the experience on the field. People ask us if we ever get tired of it? The answer is a never, although we do struggle with a lot of extra traffic here this time of the year.

Good just barely still Morning, Loungettes!Happy Saturday! Sadie and I are going to have a totally do nothing day today.Wound up teaching CPR to just one person, so it only took about an hour and a half. I did take Sadie in with me, and went in a bit early so she could visit with some of the residents (and the staff). We got home around 1 ayem, puttered around a little bit, went to bed around 2. Slept in till almost 10. Miss Sadie is snoozing pretty much continually this ayem, although she gets up to follow me whenever I get up for another cup of coffee or a second batch of pancakes. I cut up some apples to put in my pancakes this ayem, and found the apple-cinnamon syrup I got from one of the local orchards last fall to put on them, and oh my goodness how yummy!I have got to find more excuses to use that syrup!

Karen--good luck with the Prolia. It seems like it's time you got a break and didn't have much in the way of side effects!.

Cammy Cat--I learned the overdoing lesson, I promise.I don't have a full 40 hours of work time in this week because of the odd hours and making sure I am taking care of myself. So it's not like when I was working 60 hours or more a week, week in and week out. Plus, I've gotten my flu shot (for what it's worth) and am starting my winter supplement routine to see if I can keep from catching anything this winter. Thank you for reminding me to take care of myself, and keep nudging, I can always use the help! And I would not say you are addicted to the Xanax. You haven't done anything illegal to get more, or buying extra from overseas through the internet or anything like that.

Ooh, I like that DOTD recipe!Mm, I think I have everything needed for that, may have to have one this afternoon!

Goldie--The new doc was OK, he actually reviewed my chart before coming in to see me and gave me his reasons for everything he was recommending. One part of the visit was actually kind of funny, he was telling me that the office is in the process of hiring a female nurse practitioner to accommodate women who prefer their "female examination" be done by another woman rather than a man. The way he said "female examination" with a wave of his hand toward his pelvic area while not quite looking me in the eye was just kind of funny to me. He was working so hard to be sure he was not embarrassing me or making me at all uncomfortable while knowing that could be an uncomfortable topic. It was really nice to be treated respectfully like that. Sorry to hear about your aquaintance. So sad when the Rat Bas$ard gets another good woman.

Jazzy--Wow, that balloon festival video is GREAT! What a lot of fun! So many different shapes and colors, just a great watch. You must love this coming around every year.

Hi All!!!... Many of you have probably had this...goes down easy and doesn't seem to hit you hard like other shots can. That means you can drink more than one or is a good choice if you are not really a shot person.

    Cinnamon Toast Crunch shot:

    • 2 ounces Rum Chata
    • 1 ounce Fireball (I like Jack Fire..not as sweet)
    • cinnamon & sugar to rim the glasses (3 sugar : 1 cinnamon) (Tastes just as great without cinammon/sugar)

Rim two shot glasses with the cinnamon & sugar mixture. In a shaker, add ice and all of the ingredients above. Shake and strain into the shot glasses and enjoy!!

Well, the party bus was great fun, the birthday boy was wasted beyond any point I’d ever seen from him before, even attempting a quick stripper pole dance, lol. Sadly though, the restaurant and bar did not have any fun cocktails, so it was s few bourbon/coke’s for me. Still, a good time was had by all.

Karen, I had never heard of Sharsheret till you mentioned it—I’m Jewish too (though BRCA-neg). I may donate as well (I recently discovered Ezer Mitzion bone marrow registry after my cousin died of complications of MDS in Aug. and his wife requested memorial donations to it). I have a Stage IV friend, so I am donating to Metavivor too.

L’Shana Tovah, and may you have an easy fast this Yom Kippur.

No DOTD for me today—had a glass of cava Friday night,

Karen, I had no SEs from Prolia. (Zometa was a nightmare and even gave me neuropathy & bone pain). If by some chance you do get bone pain (much less likely with Prolia), take Claritin (or its generic, loratidine—store brand is fine. Before your next shot, take a Claritin for four nights before (instead of another antihistamine you might be taking). Have no idea why loratidine works on bone pain but cetirizine (Zyrtec) doesn't—even though they're the same class of non-drowsy antihistamines.

Happy seems to be doing better—eating like a horse, enjoying his new prescription wet food & kibble, affectionate & playful. Seems to be filling out a bit, and even his coat looks healthier. He has coughed up one hairball, and that's after munching the kitty wheatgrass I bought for that purpose. (Better a hairball than bile). Heidi is on an intermittent hunger strike (except for trying to eat Happy's kibble). She isn't much crazier about the Hill's c/d pate than she was about the Royal Canin SO Moderte Calorie—I have to mix in Pro Plan probiotic, season it with catnip, and stud it with Purina Temptations treats—and she still leaves over half of what I give her, no matter the original portion size I’ve dished out. Maybe she'll deign to eat leftovers, maybe not. She needs to slim down a bit but not too fast lest she get fatty liver disease. And I have to scoop up her leftovers—if Happy eats any more than a few crumbs of her food it could irritate his tummy

Chi - I can't take antihistamines - last time I took them I had heart palpitations - not willing to risk it. Wishing you an easy and meaningful fast.

Good morning friends- been a busy and fun weekend so far. I went to the spa friday night for some self care and had a combo treatment I just loved that included energy balancing, massage and reflexology. The massage therapist I had was new to me as my regular person has been out with an injury, but she is wow and will see her again. I also heard my other therapist is back working and will try to see him again too. Now I have two to choose from. My body feels much better and it helped me to destress quite a bit. Whew.

Yesterday was my friend's daughter's wedding and a fun time. They had the service outdoors and it was a nice day for it, then in to the hall for some drinks and dinner. The food was home made by family and friends and I have not been to a wedding like that in decades, pretty nice! i stayed for three hours and they still had not cut the cut or did the champagne toast, but it was enough to socialize with the folks I needed. Nothing exotic to drink, just a couple glasses of pinot grigo. I came home and went to bed right away and slept right through! Whew again.

On Thursday, it was two weeks past surgery so I am allowed to wear eye make up now (just in time for the wedding) and able to be in water again. Into the pool today. Five more days of drops to go!

Goldie- two passings in a week from bc is just not right. I am sorry for your losses friend. Cancer sucks.

Chi- I am so glad Happy is doing better!

Ill- I like the sound of the party bus. I think you did okay with a fav cocktail in the end?

Welcome to the party Beach! I like the looks of that cocktail too!

NM- I like that Sadie could come with you to work for a bit and made friends. I bet everyone loved her, what's not to love? She sounds like such a great dog. But I really do have a question, how many kitchen utensils are in her box now? Asking for a friend, lol.

Cami- so what is going on with Les having to wait on this surgery? I think I have known you now for almost 7 years, you were one of my first people I met on BCO (Teka too). Is Joey all better and enjoying his CD? And where is Dara, Dara, Dara too? Perhaps lurking.....

Speaking of Teka- what is going on in north country? Are you seeing colorful leaves now?

Okay ladies, time to get some pumpkin spice coffee going a bit more and wishing you all a good day & week. Will probably not be back posting until the fam is gone on 10/14 but will try to poop and share a balloon pic or two if I can!
