One of the ways to learn to "feel with" is to get to know others
beyond a superficial level. When we experience another's
life the way he or she experiences it, our world expands
and we begin to develop the ability to "feel with."
We develop compassion.
Anne Wilson Schaef0 -
Never forget that the purpose for which a we live is the improvement of ourselves, so that we may go out of this world having, in our great sphere or our small one, done some little good for our fellow creatures and labored a little to diminish the sin and sorrow that are in the world. -William E. Gladstone

There is no wilderness like a life without friends; friendship multiplies blessings and minimizes misfortunes; it is a unique remedy against adversity, and it soothes the soul. -Baltasar Gracian

People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle
and shine when the sun is out; but when the darkness sets in
their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within.
Elisabeth Kuebler-Ross0 -
The cure for all the illness of life is stored in the inner depth of life itself, the access to which becomes possible when we are alone. This solitude is a world in itself, full of wonders and resources unthought of. It is absurdly near; yet so unapproachably distant. -Rabindranath Tagore

Walking meditation is a way of waking up to the wonderful moment we are living in. If our minds are caught up and preoccupied with our worries and our suffering, or if we distract ourselves with other things while walking, we can't practice mindfulness; we can't enjoy the present moment. We're missing out on life. If we're awake, then we'll see this is a wonderful moment that life has given us, the only moment in which life is available. We can value each step we take, and each step can bring us happiness because we're in touch with life, with the source of happiness, and with our beloved planet. -Thich Nhat Hanh, How to Walk

I love the people that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but those whose hearts are firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.
Thomas Paine0 -
Faith is not something that is passive. Our faith requires a commitment from us. If thoughts of lack come to mind, we counteract such negativity by counting our blessings and giving thanks for the abundance of good things we have. The ability of our bodies to heal is enhanced by our affirmations of life, which stimulate a positive response from the life within our very cells.

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.
If we did not sometimes taste of adversity,
prosperity would not be so welcome.
- Anne Bradstreet
In the depth of winter I finally learned that there
was in me an invincible summer.
- Albert Camus
No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.

If I want to feel younger and look younger, then it's only natural that part of my daily routine is to laugh more. Laughing gives the muscles of my face, chest, and abdomen a workout. A hearty laugh stimulates my heart rate, causes me to breathe deeply, and releases happiness hormones, my endorphins. Laughter is one of the ways I express my gratitude to God. As I laugh, I release the gladness of my soul into the environment--creating something that's good for me and good for all those around me. -unattributed

We plant seeds that will flower as results in our lives, so best to remove the weeds of anger, avarice, envy and doubt, that peace and abundance may manifest for all. Dorothy Day.

Over the years I have come to believe that life is full of unchosen circumstances, that being human has to do with the evolution of our individual consciousness and with it, responsibilities for choice. Pain and joy both come with life. I believe that how we respond to what happens to us and around us shapes who we become and has to do with the psyche or the soul's growth. -Jean Shinoda Bolen

Do each day all that can be done that day.You don't need to overwork – or to rush blindly into your work, trying to do the greatest possible number of things in the shortest possible amount of time.Don't try to do tomorrow's – or next week's – work today. It's not so much the number of the things you do but the quality, the efficiency of each separate action that counts. . . . you need only to succeed in the small tasks of each day. This makes a successful day. With enough of these, you have a successful week, month, year – and lifetime. -Earl Nightingale

When I think of my past, I try to dwell on the good times, the happy moments, and not to be haunted by the bad. . .To me the gift of life is contained in the command, whatever happens: " Don't let it get you. Just keep on going." Thus, I try to think of the good that I have already experienced and what will still be coming. -Rose Kennedy

Sometimes life frightens me and I'm tempted to retreat instead of risking failure. But when I challenge this fear and choose to take a risk, this stretches my soul. By forging ahead and trying something new—even when I am scared—I perform an act of courage. And this act of courage strengthens my soul and strengthens my character. -John Gray

Our language has wisely sensed the two sides of being alone. It has created the word "loneliness" to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word "solitude" to express the glory of being alone. -Paul Tillich

You have it easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world's happiness now. How? By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or discouraged. Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime. -Dale Carnegie

If you take a moment or two, every once in a while, to sit still and listen to your heart, you'd find that your world is safe and that there is no problem without a solution. But you've got to learn to trust - trust life, your God, your very being. And as you trust, you'll see that your problems start to disappear as mist before the morning sun.

Gentleness is everywhere in daily life, a sign that faith rules through ordinary things: through cooking and small talk, through storytelling, making love, fishing, tending animals and sweetcorn and flowers, through sports, music and books, raising kids—all the places where the gravy soaks in and grace shines through . Even in a time of elephantine vanity and greed, one never has to look far to see the campfires of gentle people. -Garrison Keillor

If I can think of myself as loved, I can love and accept others. If I see myself as forgiven, I can be gracious toward others. If I see myself as powerful, I can do what I know is right. If I see myself as full, I can give myself freely to others. -Kathy Peel

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. -Melody Beattie

Today, examine your beliefs, your actions, your wants,
to determine whether they still represent your highest purpose.
Choose your Habits, Choose your Life.
Your Habits Are Your Life.

There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for the spring. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter. -Rachel Carson

Happiness birthed by joy is an inside decision. You must fight against the human tendency to be hurt by someone else's failure to see your needs. You must become an incurable optimist, not an optimist that wears rose-colored glasses and does not see the reality of life; rather, an optimist that says, "Thanks to God I am filled with joy, a joy that transcends all of life." -Elizabeth B. Brown

Karma is simply the law of cause and effect. If you plant an apple seed, you don't a get a mango tree. If we practice hatred or greed, it becomes our way and the world responds accordingly. If we practice awareness or loving-kindness, it becomes our way and the world responds accordingly. We are heirs to the results of our actions, to the intentions we bring to every moment we initiate. We make ripples upon the ocean of the universe through our very presence. -Christina Feldman and Jack Kornfield

There is always something to do. There are hungry people to feed, naked people to clothe, sick people to comfort and make well. And while I don't expect you to save the world I do think it's not asking too much for you to love those with whom you sleep, share the happiness of those whom you call friend, engage those among you who are visionary and remove from your life those who offer you depression, despair and disrespect.

If you aren't in the moment,
you are either looking forward to uncertainty,
or back to pain and regret.

[The Native American] believes profoundly in silence—the sign of perfect equilibrium. Silence is the absolute poise or balance of body, mind and spirit. The people who preserve their selfhood ever calm and unshaken by the storms of existence—not a leaf, as it were, astir on the tree; not a ripple upon the surface of the shining pool—theirs, in the mind of the unlettered sage, is the ideal attitude and conduct of life. If you ask: "What are the fruits of silence?" he or she will say: "They are self-control, true courage or endurance, patience, dignity, and reverence. Silence is the cornerstone of character." -Ohiyesa (Charles Eastman)

It's possible to have too much in life. Too many clothes jade our appreciation for new ones; too much money can put us out of touch with life; too much free time can dull the edge of the soul. We need sometimes to come very near the bone so that we can taste the marrow of life rather than its superfluities.

When was the last time you stopped to listen to the wind blow through the trees? Or stopped to listen to a river as it flowed past you, or the crickets and frogs and other living things as they make their music? When was the last time you listened--truly listened--to a favorite song, paying attention to the lyrics, the drums, the rhythm, the guitars or strings? -Tom Walsh
