Morning! Thanks for all the compliments re: Paulie. He really is a sweetie!

blackjack - Hi... long time no talk! Glad dd and ds made it home safely. I'm sure pound cake would work, but if you want to decorate it, etc., here's a link to an actual Lamb cake recipe:

    http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Easter-Lamb-Cake-II/Detail.aspx

It got 5 stars from quite a few people who made it. Hmmmmmmmm...what could dd's surprise be? Let us know!

Irene - OMG OMG OMG - you lucky duck! That beach is absolutely frickin' GORGEOUS! Wow...I WANT TO BE THERE! Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo BAD!

Wendrew - Will you get rid on that damn snowman! lol lol lol Yes, Paulie is a boy, but I'm training his bangs to stay out of his eyes... here's why:

"Mama, how can I smile at the camera? I can't even see it!"

Ginny - Good luck with your PET scan...fingers crossed for SPOTLESS results!

Rita, Jackie, JulieB, Carol, Susan, Jan, PJuliet,Pat, Mich101, kater, LisaMed, Donna, Buddy, everyone - have a great day!

BJ:  I made a lamb cake and it turned out to be crumb lamb cake as the poor thing just fell apart.  I never even got to the icing part.  I have a mold, but it (not I) is faulty.  Lamb cakes always remind me of my Aunt Helen, my favorite aunt.  I personally feel she purchased hers on Easter so she would remain forever perfect in my mind.

DH has his birthday party at DD's house.  I purchased him a hammock.  Now I know we are getting old.   My daughters  each got him cookbooks.  BJ, my DH loves to cook but he is an amateur.  He would love to speak to your son about cooking one day.  My daughters bought him a book on marinades and sauces.  How old is your son?  It is hard to have the "kids" come home as all the old ways of doing things do not fit when they become adults.  Just don't have any opinion on any subject and you will do fine.  I think males are easier.  My DD  spent one month in transition from school to independent living and it was good for both of us.

Laura, the dog is precious....almost as cute as my Lila Grace....well truth be told she is going through infant acne, so he may be edging her out for a bit.

Have fun today.  I didn't hear a thing about snow, but I am not listening.

Hi Rita and other Illinois Women!

Thanks for creating this topic. I'm glad to connect with you and will take time to read some of the posts to get better acquainted with everyone.

My journey with BC has just begun. I have DCIS T1mic and am in the process of gathering information to make an informed decision about how to proceed. This week, I'm meeting with a Genetic Counselor and Dietician. Next week, I have an MRI to determine if my cancer is more widespread. Then, I've got appointments with two plastic surgeons to learn about various options for reconstruction. Fortunately, I have an incredible medical team and feel tremendous support. Still it's a time of uncertainty so I'm doing my best to take one step at a time.

I'm inspired by so many of your stories and it's really great to see evidence in your lives that life does go on after a BC diagnosis.

I live in Lombard and if there's ever a chance to connect with others in the area, I'd love to join you.

    Best wishes to you all!

    Kristi

I'll send the PM to get on "THE LIST" so I won't miss out.

Oh, I came back in  to ad something to my post and found Kristi.  It sounds like they got your BC very early!  Sorry, all the same, on the new challenge.  I lived in Elmhurst for about 8 years and loved it.  We still have many friends in that area.

Hi kristi...Sorry you have to be here but i personally think this is the best thread!

You will get alot of info and it sounds like you are on the right path with the DR.selection and go from there. When i was informed i had DCIS, Nov 21st.. i took a few surgeon referrals and looked them up by googling  and made an appt. Each step progressed from there and loved this DR as soon as I met him and felt very comfortable in my selection.

Try to stay in each step and do what you need here and the support will help guide you. You are never alone here as  we are all in different stages of the jounrey and someone knows where you are.It sounds like you are informed thus far and have a good handle in staying in the moment etc.

Laura...Paulie is soooo adorable!!!!!Hair goes tommorrow and will be in a wig before chemo or scarf?!!

Hugs to all and snow is not happening here.. it is all a dream.

First off....Big HI to Kristi.  We are quite a bunch here and unfortunately there is always room for one more where we are.

Elfsong, my ex-husband and his wife retired to Las Cruces and dearly love it there   I think they live by the Organ Mts.  For some reason New Mexico has always sounded like a somewhat romantic place to me...don't know why.

Karin....good to see you.  Maybe Dh needs a part time job now....or maybe he needs to learn to cook and have supper waiting when you get home.  Don't I wish...oh, what am I saying....I do have a new stove...can't have HIM boiling things over on it or getting the oven dirty.

Another ton of stuff awaits ( just had quite the hail storm ) so I'd best get going.  Talk to ya'll later.

    Hugs,

    Jackie

    Hi Ladies,

Laura's search light made me decide to write and say hi to everyone. Rita can attest to the fact that I keep up on you daily. She and I are going shopping tomorrow (just an excuse to get together and gab and catch up!) We're meeting in Peoria. I can't wait to hear more about Evan. I love that name!

Laura, your Paulie is adorable. So glad you decided to go ahead and take the leap again with a new dog. We thought we were losing our Ozzie last week (black lab/collie mix, outside farm dog who thinks he's a lap dog.) He was moving very slowly and even sat out in the rain instead of coming in the garage. He hates the rain so we were concerned. But he slowly came out of it. We think he may have been hit. We live in the country and people drive by here like the proverbial bat out of hell. He likes to chase cars. He had no visible signs of being hit but seemed stunned. He was better in a few days and now is back to being himself. We've had him for 12 years when Daughter #1 brought him home on a "temporary" basis. Ha.

Welcome to the new ladies. Sorry you have to be here, but you will get a lot of support.

I just had an app't with my onc and graduated back to every six months. Had been going every two ever since he found the node under my left arm, but after two ultrasounds and the yearly mammogram he was convinced it's nothing so said he'd see me in 6. If this man ever retires, I will sorely miss him. However, since he's my age I have a feeling it will be happening before too many more years.

Daughter #5 is finishing up her semester in Florence, Italy. On her spring break, my sister and I went over to visit her. It was a memorable trip. We had such a nice time. Of course along with the ancient ruins, we visited a couple of bars I never would have seen otherwise. One in Rome was an ice bar. The whole room, seats, glasses, etc. are made of ice. We were given gloves and a thermal cape when we entered. Interesting experience. The bar in Florence that she thought we just HAD to go to (she's 22, by the way) was the BeBop and had Beatles impersonators. Truthfully, they didn't sound at all like them, but she thought people our age would enjoy it! Oh my. She will return to the States four weeks from tomorrow and I can't wait!

Michele101, I think I remember you said once your sister had had melanoma. My sister has had that also. Thought that was interesting with you and I having breast cancer and our sisters with melanoma. Where was your sister's located? My sister's was on her back. She's very fair-skinned which probably added to the problem. We grew up without sun block.

Jackie, hope you are figuring out your new stove. Mine has a convection option which I still don't know how to use! Susan, I'm sure you are counting down the days. This summer everyone will ask you how you like being retired. If you are like I was, the summer didn't feel any different than any other summer. It was the fall when it hit me that I really was done teaching! Hope you are enjoying the new grandbaby. Have you any new photos? BJ, hope your son likes his new job. Is a lunch bunch gathering there in the future? Wendy, hope you don't have any snow tonight that you have to ignore! We are supposed to get it too. In fact, last Sunday we had about 3 inches. We drove 35 mph the 25 miles to our church, then in the afternoon it melted off. Crazy weather. Connie, hope you had a good weekend in MI. Juliet, how's the job search going? JanClare, can't wait to see pictures of your remodeling!

Well, I suppose I should start thinking about fixing something for supper. When all 6 kids were home, I fixed Sunday dinner but they were on their own for the evening meal. Wonder if I could re-introduce that concept with DH? I am SO JEALOUS of you gals who have husbands who cook!

    Have a good week!

My mom was dx with BC just a few weeks ago. She is from New Minden IL. Its about 1 hour from St. Louis, Mo. Right now the doctors are saying she has IDC Stage 3 in her right breast. Unsure on how big the tumor is. She is a triple negative. She starts chemo Thursday. The tumor is too big to do surgury on right now so they are planing on chemo for 4 months to strink it and then surgury and rads. She is recieving her treatment at the Barnes-Jewish Breast Center in St. Louis Mo. Her doctors are Margenthaler, Sorscher, and Zoberi.

Stay here, Chrisinaly andthe ladies will be chiming in soon to offer support. You live pretty far from me, but this post will keep us close.

I know Jackie is a quote person and I look forward to her quotes every day. I came across this one and thought I would send it along. Bella Azbug, the character with all the hats once said, "Whether you're one-breasted, two breasted, or no breasted, it's a two-fisted fight." Right on, sister! And Nancy Reagan said, "Whole days, even weeks, go by now and I don't even think about it. It's amazing that after something so terrifying, you can forget."

I got these from Portraits of Hope...Conquering Breast Cancer. It is a hopeful book to read! You forget how many of us have this disease and do SURVIVE!  Azbug did die of an unrelated issue.

    Have a good one!

Laura..your lighthouse did the trick!  I've been trying to get Mary Jane to post for over a year now and all you have to do is send out the lighthouse and here she is!  LOL  It also found Karin.  It's always good to see a post from you, Karin!

Rene...Wow!  What a lovely beach!  I sure wish I was there right now instead of in my office looking out the window at a snowy yard!  I'm so glad you had a good trip.

Welcome Kristi and Christinaly. This is a comforting place to come!  There is always somebody here to listen when you need to vent and always somebody who'll try to answer any questions you might have.  Kristi, it sounds like you caught your cancer early and that is good. Please keep us informed as you go through the next few weeks and the scans, MRI's and whatever other tests they decide to give you.

Christinaly, so sorry to hear about your She is lucky to have you by her side.  Come back often to this thread.  We'll be here.

Jackie, is the stove hooked up and in service now?

Jan, I bet you had fun with those three little boys.  I am heading east to KY this weekend and can't wait to get my hands on my new grandson and those other two little guys.  We are going to get to see Alex's T-Ball game on Saturday and are taking Grant to get his first little bike.  I can hardly wait.  The Easter baskets are filled and just waiting!

Elf Song...so sorry to hear that you've been having some sleepless nights.  Changes of any kind are always hard, but they're especially hard when you've gone through the journey that you've just had.  You feel secure with your medical team now and the unknown is always a little scary.  I tend to believe that things usually work out for the best.  Hang in there.  Come to vent any time you need to vent.  Hugs!

Susan...the days just keep going by!  It won't be long now!

Ginny, glad to hear that the blood clots are gone.  Give me a call!  I ran into Marcia at Borders the other day and we talked about getting everybody together for dinner again.

Well, I need to get out of here.

Good Snowy Morning Ladies....the nurse needs some help and advice please.....and quickly if you can. I know a lot of you travel fairly regularly and most of you know Im leaving on vacation in two weeks.....on the other thread where I post regularly there has lately been a huge discussion about LE and the problems it causes some ladies and what they do to prevent and treat it.....I have no signs of LE at this point, both of my Drs, know I am flying and neither of them said a word to me but the consensus of the other thread seems to be that flying without an LE compression sleeve is foolish on my part.....I dont even know how to go about getting one in less than two weeks......I totally freaked out last night for the first time in weeks, crying and saying maybe I shouldnt even go on this vacation.....and that is SO not me but it really has me scared....you all know I work long hours because I have to and I will still have to after this trip so tell me your opinion please, I value what each of you says.....sleeve ? no sleeve ? concerns ? no concerns ? I will call both drs today but I trust all of you too.........thanks so much

    Hi everyone,

Well, it is not a great day here, but every day can't be full of sun and warm air.  Hope this does not last too long.  There are hostas and other things coming up really well and I'd like to see them full and lush and not partly damaged from a round of 'late' winter.

Christinalynn...nice to meet you.  I know where New Minden is.  Dh and I drive through on our way to O'Fallon and Shiloh.  I imagine we have stopped on occasion as well.  I do not know a lot about the the Barnes Breast Center as I don't go there....but I do think for larger tumors it is somewhat standard to shrink them first before surgery.  The name Margenthaler rings a bell for some reason.  I do have a friend down the road that may have had that Dr.  Is the Dr. female?  I do recall Kay saying her Dr. did not have a great bedside manner, but in all other matters she gave her extremely high marks and had all the confidence in her a person could have.

Susan....I love the quotes---especially regarding the two fisted fight.  Nancy Reagan sounds like she figured a way to embrace life daily and not let cancer intrude too much....I think we are all trying to do that....and maybe do it more than we think.  Sure hope so.

Mary Jane...glad you stopped in here.  I know you don't post much and I know why, but your a welcome sight.  Loved hearing about the Ice Bar....what fun.I think I'd be ordering Hot
Buttered Rum though.  Felt like I was almost there listening to you talk.  Nice to hear that you are a 'graduate' again and that things are fine.  Glad Ozzie is doing fine and back to his usual....altho' maybe if hit he won't be as anxious to 'chase' anymore.  Hope so.

Happy shopping in Peoria....see all of you later.

    Hugs,

    Jackie

Thanks so much for the welcome. I just found out about a Look Good Feel Better class in Centralia that is just about 20 minutes away from my mom. Have any of you been to those classes? Margenthaler is a lady doctor. She is in charge of the surgery. Sorscher is the Medical Oncologist and Zoberi is the Rads Oncologist. My mom doesn't really like the hospital itself because there are a lot of students there and apparently they don't ask if the students can do things to you they just let them. Mom said she went to the gasto guy and all he said was that he was going to do a rectal exam and then she had one from both the student and the doctor. She says she feels like a lab mouse ungoing test. I dont know if its all the stress or if the doctors really are that bad. I am going with her Thursday so I will find out. I know the medical oncologist has yet to tell her her exact dx. And he keeps changing his mind about whether or not she can work. She was considering trying to get short term diability, but doesn't know if she will be approved. I believe it was the surgeron that told her the whole process was going to take at least a year. Her husband is not being very much help he takes her to her appointments but expects her to pay for everything and since shes not working she is very worried about running out of money. Since her husband said he wont' help her with gas or medicine once she runs out of money. Its just a bad situation. I tried to get her hooked up with the Reach to Recovery program but her husband had a fit and said he didnt want strangers in his house. He is isolating her and its so horrible. She needs to be around people. He has made it to where my kids age 1 and 3 are not allowed in his house so that drastically cuts down on the time I am able to send with her. Anyway thanks so much for welcoming me and I will let everyone know Thursday evening how her chemo goes.

    HI all -

I am back.  I have had a really good week this past week.  Today I am exactly 6 weeks from my surgery date and starting back to work.   Last week I finally felt "alive" again.  I was also able to sleep in the bed again for a little while.  I haven't made it all night before retreating back to the recliner but some progress is better than none.   I go for another fill tomorrow.

Kristi - glad you found our forum.  I too was diagnosed with DCIS.   I elected to have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction (2/23/09).

ChristinaLynn - I am also glad you found our forum.  I know where New Minden is located.  I live downstate and travel to St Louis Barnes Jewish Hospital for treatments.  Margenthaler was my surgeon and I absolutely loved her.  She was awesome.  I know about Sorscher even though I didn't have him as a doctor.  He is a very well trained doctor and I heard good things about him.  I don't know about Zoberi.   The hospital is linked in with Washington University and will have medical students everywhere.  That didn't bother me at all.  Actually, it is a good thing to go to a hospital tied in with a university because they are on the "cutting edge" of technology and research.   Plus, the students have to learn somewhere - why not under a knowledgeable doctor?   I really feel for your mom's situation.   She will need all the support she can get right now and it sounds like the man she is married to is not very understanding or caring for that matter..   I would do what I felt like was needed to help my mother - regardless of what others think or say.  I would check into the American Cancer Society to see if there are volunteers who can help take her back and forth to treatments.    The ACS in Marion told me that this might be available.   She needs help and he will just have to "get over it".   I went to the Look Good Feel Better program and it was great.    I would also check into short term disability.   I had this through my work and it was well worth it.   Good luck with everything!   We are here to help!

Rene -  The beach picture was gorgeous.  I want to go now.  May I ask about how much it costs to go?   I have been saving for a vacation and that looks great!   I don't need to know exact $ just a ballpark and what cruise line you recommend.

Laura - Your paulie is adorable.  I just want to squeeze him!

ElfSong - I hear Albuquerque is beautiful.   The weather is milder than Illinois.   It also is known for the hot air balloon festival.   Apparently, the climate, terrain and other conditions are ideal for balloon enthusiasts.

For everyone else - hope you all have a great day!

Christina     yes, Barnes is definitely a teaching hospital....always was.  I remember as a small child my mom being sent there from Centralia ( near where Hope-4-Cure lives.  My mom was having her tonsils out....guess our hospital here did not do too much if they didn't even take tonsils out.

I hope you will encourage your Mom to attend the "LookGood-FeelBetter" class here in Centralia.  It's a great program where you are taught ( and given for free ) a make-up case and shown ways of dealing with the vagaries of using make-up as a cancer patient.  As well, they usually always come with some free wigs, scarves, hats etc.  These are all donated by companies or people who have graduated back to not needing a wig.  All laundered of course.  You wouldn't believe how much fun you can have with a room full of bald women.  I was not near so shy about my baldness after going.

I am sorry that your Mom's husband chooses to be so difficult.  He sounds very in-secure.  Doesn't want to recognize that it is your mother's house too.  Hope-4Cure is right I think,  You will have to try and be as supportive as possible under less than good circumstances.  Hopefully, you will be able during this next appt. to find out her diagnosis and I would encourage the short term disability once you know.......and I think it is quite possible that all that will be done could well take a year.  I was operated on in October 2007 ----  had first chemo, Dec 2007 and chemo continued on until April 30th. 2008......I was given a few weeks to recuperate that, then radiation started....daily for 7 weeks ending late July 2008 .  She may well use up a fair amt. of time for all she needs to do.

Christina please do tell your mom that there are a whole bunch of ladies on this cancer blog and we will be praying for and pulling for her and hoping for the very best outcome for all she has to do.  Whether we are able to talk to her directly or end up supporting her quietly, it makes no difference.  We do care what happens and want her to know that she is never alone.  She is so fortunate to have you to step in where you are able.

Hope-4-Cure ( Jennifer ) glad you are making progress.....sometimes it is baby steps but one foot in front of the other.  One of those things I think that seem difficult till we are closer to done and then start to wonder what the fuss was about.....but it is very real no matter which phase you are  working with.

    See you all later.

    Hugs,

    Jackie

Jan....I sent you a PM!  They have different compressions so be sure to try them on.  Since I don't have LE I went with the light compression and my rad onc was  more than happy with it.

    Hi all -

I missed lots of posts while I was out of town. Had a good time but it sure wasn't FL!

I skimmed through - sounds like we have several new members!  Welcome!  Please let us know how we can help!

Jan - I think you will find the consensus around here would be to get a sleeve - better safe than sorry...  My surgeon was the one that told me to get one and he had to write a script for it.  I got it at a pharmacy within a couple of days.  On the last two trips I went on, I forgot to put it on until we were in the air, but I did put it on when I remembered.   I feel bad that you are stressing about your vacation.  I hope you are able to get away and relax!

Sorry to hear about your mom, Christinalynn.  This disease is hard enough, no one should have to go through it alone.  She is in my thoughts.

Time to get back to work - lots to catch up on.

Jan.  I recently got sleeves.  There are different compresion strengths.  Some are even custom.  Your arms will need to be measured in several places to get the right fit.  Most medical supply houses carry the standard sizes.  They cost about 75.00 each.  Hopefully if your Doc writes a perscription, your insurance will cover them.  From what I hear. flying can be a real problem.

    HI,

Just a couple funny Lamb cake stories to add- albeit a bit late in the thread.

The lamb cake has always been a big custom in my Italian husband's family-- but more than the cake, my husband and his brother delighted in getting to the cake before it was served and decorating its, um, rear quarters with strategically placed black jelly beans.....  Laughing

I'm actually hosting Easter dinner this year- a small affair as we alternate with in laws and most of my family is with their other sides this year.  I invited an "orphaned"  friend from work whose family is out of town. She is Chinese and not entirely familiar with all the customs here. So-  when she asked if she could bring anything, so I suggested a dessert and to surprise my husband, mentioned  a lambcake. Well, she came in this am, quite apologetic-- said she had been to two butchers, but had been unable to find or explain really what a Lambcake was!  One guy did offer her lamb burgers, however!   Only then did I realize that to the uninitiated, it sounds pretty gross!

On a more BC related note.....I have my first Onc appt post diagnosis tomorrow. Could use a virtual handhold as I'm more anxious than I probably should be.  Logically, I don't expect much to happen except that he may put orders in for some standard tests, but I've had my first three month bc break and I'm having a hard time now going through these appointments. My stomach clenches just at the thought of going through those doors.   I also see a Gastro doc at the end of the month and have to look into the iron deficient anemia more thoroughly, so I suppose my break is over.

    Laura- Paulie is adorable.

To the newcomers- welcome-- you will find much support and help here!

Hi Christinalyn>... Sorry about your Mom and hope she can personally experience the support and good info here as well. You are a good daughter and taking the step to come here will make all the difference.  I had surgery  Jan 20th and start 4 rounds of chemo on WED. Just know you take it all one step at a time and it all falls into place somehow~!!

My hair is gone..GI Jane look and it is about 1/2 inch away from the total buzz i quess. Not easy and have to digest it all. Feel less anxiety that this part is done though as i know i have a bout two weeks where it would of started to fall out.

Some questons from  church yesterday..one asked. WIill your hair grow back?. Pastor;s Wife says.  I wear wigs for fun, BUT NEVER wear them where people may know me!!!!!! ( I need to know this)..!!! I am definitely sensitive but are these crazy questions!!! What does one think when asking these questions...loolol.

Hope all had a good weekend and a dry Monday!!!

    Hugs,Donna

Donna, people say amazing things when they feel awkward. I found that the first time I saw people after the wig, the dx, the hair fallout, whatever..many were just anxious and when anxious, we say things that are not very funny. Our culture just go nuts about hair.

I have heard "Look Good, Feel Good" lately on this thread and I found it to be a wonderful experience. A bald lady was there. They asked for a volunteer to do makeup and the scarves and she stepped up. Before my eyes this woman went from drab and sad to utterly lovely. They play up the eyes. As I once mentioned to WendyTY, if you have beautiful eyes, you don't need hair! She, by the way, has the most amazing eyes. I never got the trick of scarves. My head is too round. They look so elegant on certain heads. I hope you have a Look Good and Feel Good seminar near you.

Yep, Rita, I am ready for the big vacation! All the retirement dinners are coming up and I am getting nervous. I just hate the fanfare and attention.

JulieB, I LOVE that lamb cake story! I will remember that one. That is so nice you are including a friend with faraway family. I am having a crowd here (the usual) along with a teacher I work with who has family far away. She, like my DD, has two under two, so it could be chaotic. As my husband says, "The more the merrier." We will see.

I would like to post a question. To those celebrating Easter, are you serving lamb, ham or crown pork? Happy Passover to all that celebrate.

    Susan
