I love sweet things and always have some cravings. In the last year, I have started to eat less carbs and my cravings were in control. However, after the brest cancer diagnosis, I am not so strict anymore. I really need to improve in this aspect.

Dani....I'm sorry for all you have had to endure. Interestingly, I think there are thousands of people who do everything right almost endlessly and they end up with one or more cancers. There are many others who lead a carefree life, not getting regular screening tests, and doing pretty much as they wish, when they wish. As crude as it may seem......I think there is nothing much you can do. I do have spiritual theories as to why it happens, but it is not a concrete answer and just opinions on my part which will not help you.
I do hope you will think about the benefit of having kept yourself in good shape though and possibly due to that having perhaps a slightly easier time during your surgery and recovery. Again just my humble opinion, but for the most part.....I think we are in this world for the benefit of out soul and not so much our body, but I'm highly aware that would cause some people to feel some upset.....so I don't bring it up too often.
I hope your path becomes much smoother and stays that way.
Fingers crossed for you Rita. It is so off-putting when you try to "feel" ok that your going to go have a test to try and ascertain that you are still NED. You'll be on my mind.
Peace and love,
Jackie

I went in for my first mammogram at 42. I'm a runner, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, am a healthy weight. My vices are my morning coffee and an occasional beer. My first mammogram at 42 wound up being my last. I had a cyst that they wanted to confirm was fluid filled, so they scheduled me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound found a suspicious area, which was atypical ductal hyperplasia and needed to be removed surgically. During the surgery they decided to biopsy another suspicious area right next to the first area. That had DCIS. An MRI after the first surgery found another spot that was IDC. And after my double mastectomy, the pathology report noted ANOTHER area of DCIS. For a grand total of 4 unrelated spots on one breast. It's still unreal to me! But just confirmed that a double mastectomy was the best way to go for me.
I think there is no rhyme or reason to this. I personally think some of us are just more susceptible to this, and I think we have royally screwed up our environment which adds to the issue. My goal is to protect my daughter now!

Dani don't assume you did something wrong. It could have been the air you breathe. I still feel stress is a huge factor that they don't consider/study.
Also note that the scans are only as good as the person reading them. I had a scare in 2006. Went back for an US and everyone said it was nothing. Then my gyno retired and they didn't send me a letter till 2 months after she left. Skipped that mammo because no gyno. 2008 & 2009 was told everything was good. 2010 came in with a little bloody nipple discharge… and they said "suspicious but not typical of breast cancer." Saw my BS 2 weeks later and just by looking at the mammo (they sent the wrong US disk) he knew I had cancer as did the radiologist who did my biopsy. My tumor, IDC + DCIS= 6.5cm in my barely 34B breast.
I went to my local Dominicks store today. How depressing. It's closing. Went to Jewel up the street. Hmmm this Jewel isn't going to cut it. Not sure where I'm going to shop yet.

Lago, I agree that the reason for getting ill is maybe environmental. I lived for 28 years in Bulgaria, prior to my coming to the USA. The quality of the air was bad due to a chemical plant built in close proximity to my city. We have fought for years to get this plant removed but with no results. Finally, that chemical company bankrupted and the polutions stopped. However, I have been breating it for at least 10 years. Back then my husband, who was very active in the movement against the chemical polution, participated in a study with other pulmonologists to compare the lung diseases registered in my city with those of the other areas of the countries. The results were very troublesome. Too bad the studies were geared only toward the lung diseases not the overall impact on the health of the populatioin.

Lago, I saw on the news that many of the Dominics stores that would be closed are bougth by Mariano's. I actually like them. However, they are more expensive. I hope they open a store in a close proximity to where you live.

The Dominicks near us is closing by Christmas and all the meat is 50% off, if there is anything left, my DD went last nite and said the store shelves were so empty--it's sad cuz so many people will loose jobs now and it's been a staple store for sooo long.
And IMHO this disease has or doesn't follow any rules, it does what it wants and even fools Dr.s , so u can never blame u'rself.

Fresh meat, chicken, pork are all full price. All fresh produce is full price. All fresh dairy full price. Everything else is 1/2 price but not much left. The other 2 Dominicks sthat are closer are turning into Mariano's. Typically they are a nice store… more expensive than Dominicks but cheaper than Whole Foods. A friend of mine swears by Harvest Time. Much cheaper for produce but I doubt they will have the healthy stuff (less salt, less sugar) products. 5-6 miles away from us.

It makes me so sad to hear how people (including myself) blame themselves for getting sick. It must be human nature.
I had a chemo nurse at Sloan tell me that she was from St, Vincent's in the Carribean (sp?) Fresh air and water. Fresh fruits off of the trees, fresh fish out of the ocean. Lots of sunshine. She said they got a lot of breast cancer too. She said I was born with this and as my mother came down with it at 65 and I did at 61 it makes sense. It's hard to accept that that we can't control this and maybe thinking that we did something to cause it makes us think we can do something to prevent it.
Didn't Susan Sontag write a book about it? I remember her saying that TB used to be blamed on a broken heart...until they discovered the bacillus,

I look at it this way. 1 out of 3 woman and 1 out of 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer sometime in their lives. So we were diagnosed… so we did our statistic. This is it right. I mean lightening very rarely strikes twice.
Maybe you're born with it and maybe it's something else but I don't blame myself for living. Even if I did do something "wrong." Look at all the people that do the wrong things and never get cancer.
All they know is risk factors but they really don't know what causes breast cancer… and what doesn't!

Lago the store by us has the meat 1/2 price --it might be old meat hahaha but it's actually pretty empty now. They built a Mariano's not to far from us not long ago--so this store looks pretty empty and will probably stay that way for a while.
Tim u know I so agree with u, there is no blame just illness that goes on and on.

Unfortunately, no one knows what exactly causes breast cancer. Why some women are more prone to get ill than others. Thus it is hard to be proactive in preventing it.
About 15 years ago I had a very serious problem with my stomach to the point that I was not able to swallow solid food. I was eating small amount of baby's food and lost so much weight. I thought that I was going to die. All of my tests were inconclussive. Everyone of my doctors abandoned me. They told me they cannot do anything for me. In my lowest point, when a big shot gastroenterologist from NWestern University told me to go and see a psychiatrist, I found another doctor. He did not know what was wrong with me but he was willing to treat the symptoms. After about a month, I was able to eat better. After 5 years, when I was very stable he said that now he knows what was wrong with me but back then he had no idea. He said to me that medicine has many gray areas.
I guess that this is stilll true for the breast cancer. Hopefully, one day we will know what causes our cells to mutate and at least protect our children.

To Corpor:
I see that you had a very recent surgery. I hope that your recovery is quick and smooth.
I personally did not have any complications but it was a difficult time dealing with drains for 3 weeks and constantly feeling that boa constrictor (sp) was squizing my chest.
Healing thoughts to you.

Your worth is not measured by
what you do.
Nor can you calculate the degree of your worthiness by what you
possess.
Your worth is a function of your being.
Your being is colorless, genderless, and believe it or not, ageless.
Your being is worthy of honor, admiration, and respect.
It is a vessel of love and light.
It is a beacon of inspiration. Iyanla

It’s
not how much you accomplish in life that really counts, but how much you give to
others.
It’s not how high you build your dreams that makes a difference, but how
high your faith can climb.
It’s not how many goals you reach, but how many lives you touch.
It’s not whom you know that matters, but who your are inside.
Believe in the impossible, hold tight to the incredible, and live each
day to its fullest potential.
You can make a difference in your world. Rebecca

Good morning....sorry for the marks. Apparently one area still seems to do this but at least they are staying short and somewhat away and not so much a part of the quote.
Hope you all have a fantastic Friday.
Peace and love,

Went to the Dominicks in Barrington after my apt with PS, The sign says they will be closing 12/28. Shelves were fairly empty 75% off all grocery, 50% off meat and produce. But I scored, very little meat left and as I was looking over it the meat guys were cutting up Prime Choice NY Strip steaks, they sale priced them and then at register took off additional 50% so I ended up paying $3.00per pound. Needless to say I bought about 40lbs today, repackaged in butcher paper when I got home and put in freezer with the exception of 3 of them which my husband cooked on the grill tonight!! MMMM good!
I might just go check out another Dominicks in Lake in the Hills tomorrow and see what they have left. I love the hunt for a good deal!

Danin what was it that u had after all that? My SIL had about the same symptoms u had yrs go and we all thought she was dying and the Drs. could not find out. My brother took her to Mayo and about a week later they found her belly button had somehow grown inside and was part of her colon and it was all goofy, but they operated and she stayed about a month and was fine after.

After all these months and several times trying, CateyZ & I were finally able to meet up for lunch yesterday - we had a really nice time! Glad to hear you scored such a deal at Dominicks!! I told my husband about it and he went last night and said the meat dept was decimated.
I am going to hate losing that store - I feel so bad for all those employees. It is such a small town that it will have a huge impact on us. But I have heard rumors that Joseph's (currently in Crystal Lake) is planning to move in there. I hope they hire some of the Dominick's employees (and keep the Starbucks).
Be safe everyone - it sounds like we could have some nasty weather coming in the next few days.

Yes Jennifer I had a wonderful time!! the butcher did mention that they may be getting some more in today, possibly ribeyes. Maybe send hubby back over there and ask the butcher directly. When I was checking out the cashier asked me if they had any more and she called back to the meat dept and asked them to hold her 2 pkgs.

An oldie' but a "goodie":
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

Just wanted to wish everyone a happy holiday! It was three years ago I had my lump removed and a SNB. I remember going to Christmas Eve all drugged up to my brother's and my brother in law's houses. No one knew I had found a lump or had surgery. It was awful......such an emotional holiday. Life is so different three years later..........life is GREAT. I am thankful for all that I have and my health/life. I am grateful for all of the amazing ladies here that have supported me through listening, advice and friendship. For those of you still in treatment I am sending healing prayers. I hope that soon you will be feeling better. Life does get better again after BC! Have faith Happy Holidays!!!!!
