Welcome to the newest riders!  I'd say the more the merrier but I'm sure we would all agree that none of us really want to be here.  But we'll get through this -- together!!

As far as side effects go -- hot flushes are now a way of life for me.  My pcp told me that even though the tamox has thrown me into menopause, I will still get some PMS-like symptoms.  Irratibility and cramps for me mostly.  And still get hot flushes too.  For me it's in the evening and night time.  I have found that if I keep my feet cool, I seem to do better.  You know the opposite of 'warm feet, warm heart' -- I'm hoping!!Embarassed Also have some joint pain but nothing big. For me, I'd rather cope with the s/e's than have to go through bc again. Bottom line.

    OK, I'm off the soapbox.

    Basha,

Enjoy your time on the water.  BTW, did your doc row with you?

    Virginia,

Glad to see your smiling face! How was Father's Day with your dad?

    Lynn,

Congrats on finishing school!  Take some time for you and relax before coming stateside.  Summer break is short enough!

Well, I started my job and it's going fine.  Nice to be out in the world again.

I think that it's time to start baking again.  Which car are we going to want to fill up first with goodies?  Cakes?Cookies? Brownies? What will it be ladies?  This train has to keep on chuggin'!

So Deb, Avoid the hot kitchen and join me in the smoothie and sorbet car. Haagen Daaz makes the best raspberry and peach sorbet, and Stonyfield Farms makes Cookies and Cream and Dulce de Leche.

OH MON DIEU! The equivalent of Barbie's side effects.

No my dear surgeon didn't do the clinic but I might offer him a private lesson. (oooo titter titter teehee)

Today is my Day #4 out of 1825 (how's that larousse!).  I do seem a little tired and have a headache, on and off.  Of course, I'm now over-thinking everything so who knows if the headache stuff is due to the meds or the fact that I've been up later due to the Celtics basketball games!  I'm not usually up until midnight, so I'm very glad that the season is now over.

I'm doing my daily walks and that always helps me feel better.

It's helpful to hear from the ladies who have been on this for a while, thanks for sharing and good (the "O", LOL) and the bad.  I have not experienced the "O" ....

Hello everybody, I didn't realize that this is a train, I'll hang out in the bar, a margarita please with a splash of Barbie's SE! HA!

I must say that when I have a glass of wine (or 2) crankiness, worries, and possibly tamox SE go away...hmm... that could be dangerous, maybe it is because the booze shut down the effects of the tamox, worries... worries...

Basha, it sounds that there is some romance that us newbies need to catch up on. The surgeon...?

Christianne, your avatar, makes me dream, where is it?

Murph, I need the %... I am with you though, over-thinking every little body feelings.

I am into my second week of taking the tamox. Saw the oncologist yesterday and don't have to go back for three months, in a way that's somewhat scary. I will have some wine occasionally and coffee and chocolate. But, I am trying to eliminate soy, and a lot of non-organic dairy, don't want any of those extra hormones. We do the best we can while still trying to have a life.

I'll jump on the I don't want to gain any weight car also.

    Basha,

Raspberry sorbet, huh?  MMMMMM that sounds D-lish! That's my favorite flavor!! But I'm afraid that I'll have to bake some -- my dh wants to have a bunch of people over for dinner from work.  I'd rather bake in advance and put it in the freezer.  If you ever need a recipe for a cake, let me know!!! My fave is a mocha swirl cake.

I'm almost done with my 2nd bottle.  For those of you counting, with refills coming quarterly, there will be 20 bottles.  I have a pill organizer and as I finish each bottle I put a tally mark on the side of the organizer.  I'm a visual kinda gal.  That first mark has looked so lonely and I can't wait to put the next one on Sat.

So keep on truckin' -- I mean trainin' -- group!  And remember, just like any other train ride, some parts are bumpier and some parts smoother but we'll get to the destination only if we're on board.

    Pleasant dreams to all!!

Larousse, your postings always make me laugh! So anyway, I still have not officially begun treatment - have no prescription yet. Here's the thing - I already have horrible hot flashes all the time! Will it get worse when I start the Tamox? YIKES!!! I can't even imagine. As it is, I often have sweat showing through on my clothes, what little hair I have is drenched and any makeup I wear melts off. It doesn't help that it is 109 degrees here today (having a bit of a heat wave).

Think I'll have a glass of wine too...

I have to laugh about you being on day #4 out of 1825.  So my status is day #15 out of 1825.   Maybe we should all do percentages and start making pie charts or graphs or something. lol

Yes, Basha, what's going on with the surgeon??

My avatar is a beach in Aruba.  My dear 'ol dad took our extended family on a cruise and I love this picture.  Makes me relaxed just to look at it.

OK, OK Gals, nothing is going on with the surgeon . I just have a teensy crush on him and this is a small town so we're more likely to see each other by chance.

Sometimes I get a little carried away by my fantasies. It's funny, cause he's not attractive by classical standards, but he melts my heart.

So, I am on 11 out of 1825. I don't think that I have SE yet, I am cranky but that is normal for me since my PMS last about 2 weeks out of 4. My friend said I looked scattered! wth does that mean?

Munchy, with what you are describing, it sounds like it can't get any worst. I would give it a try. I also read from other thread that the SE often subsides after 5 years...;)

Basha, the surgeon... is he the one who did your surgery? I wonder what would Freud say about that?

Have a good weekend everybody, for the other risk-takers out there, enjoy the wine!

Hi. My se's from tamox started after a few months. I have night sweats a couple night a week, some weight loss (I read that 9% gain and 23% lose. I am small person, so it's actually not great). My periods were regular, but about 30-32 days in between, but lighter. But, this month I am already at 44 days and nothing! Is that normal?I felt like it was coming, but no. It worries me that I'm not shedding my lining. Uterine cancer etc... Any comments? Nada

Nada, I don't know the answer, my onky said the only nice se from tamox is that you don't get your period as often. I think that if that lining eventually comes out, even a little late, you should be fine. If it is of any comfort, my mil took tamox when she was 70, no lost of lining for her. She is now 76 and off the drug, and living a grand life.

I am 45, and postmenopausal, due to a condition called premature ovarian failure.  So I do not have periods...hence, no shedding of my lining, either.  No drs. have expressed any concern over this...  I DID just have a trans vaginal u/s, because I also have uterine fibroids, and I figure that way they can keep track of everything else, since Tamoxifen can cause uterine ca... and alot of other fun stuff....

Lynn, congrats on the start of your vaca. I'm sorry I haven't been here for so long, but I wanted to respond to your post especially. I noticed you were dx within a month of when I was and yesterday I had a sore pink boob as well! Yell  I was also wondering about radiation recall. Maybe I've just been doing too much lifting at work? Hmmm just not sure, seems to feel better today though. Hope yours is all better.

Have a good weekend girls. I've had family visiting for almost two weeks, I feel a little trip to the bar car may be in order....just enough to take the edge off.  lol

So many posts since I last wrote...impossible to mention everyone by name!  :O  BIG HUGS to all you gals.  Lots of these posts made me laugh out loud...  Just what needed!  My Dad is home after another 2 week stint in the hospital...  He is grouchy and crabby.  I am motivating myself to go over there, but I promised we would cook, so that will make him happy.

Can I tell you that I am OBSESSED with Guitar Hero???  I bought a Wii so I could get the Wii Fit...which I have...and DON'T use b/c I am too busy rockin' out with Guitar Hero!!

    LOL

Today is my ONE YEAR anniversary since my LAST chemo!  Whoo hoo!!  I can't believe it's been a whole year.  Sometimes it feels just like yesterday.  Two more Herceptin treatments and I am finished!

Ok girls...sorry to ramble on about myself...  I'm just excited today...  As you can see, a new avatar...I think I might actually have to break down and cut my hair!  :O  It will be the very first haircut I've had...

    Happy Weekend everyone!!

    Virginia,

    Who is guitar hero?

Our neighbors have wii and we go over there alot and play the wii bowling!  It is SO fun!  I know they have just come out with the Fit wii, but I don't think I will go there.

Congratulations on your ONE year chemo anniversary!  I took almost the whole summer, making up my mind about chemo, so I didn't start til Aug 7th, and I didn't finish til Oct. 9th!!

Your avatar is cute!  My hair looks like crap!  I just bought some headbands to try to hold it down, but it still just goes all over the place...  and the curl is almost all gone!  I LOVED the curl...

    Hi Harley!  :)

Guitar Hero is a "what."  Actually, I am a "Rock Legend" because I beat the game last night, albiet in easy mode...  The game sassed me and told me to try harder.  You put the Wii 'mote in a guitar and you play along...  It's very fun.

Thanks for the nice words on finishing my chemo...I can't believe it's a year.

My hair is getting straighter and straighter.  I have to put hair goop in it to tame it.  I guess that is why I am not cutting it...don't want to cut the curls off...just yet...

Well, we are getting wicked thunderstorms...so I guess I ought to log off...not so smart to be on the PC in the thunder and lightning!!

Say it isn't so... Tamoxifen causes uterine cancer? One more thing to worry about.

My kids have the Playstation version of Guitar Hero. I've only played it a few times, but yes, it is so fun - it's addictive!

I just met my new neighbor - they moved in right next door in January, and I had never even seen them! And I found out why. The wife was dying from breast cancer. She had been diagnosed four years earlier - already at stage four when they found it. She just passed away on June 6 - the same day I had my very last radiation treatment. What sad irony that while I was celebrating the end of treatment with my family, he was mourning right next door. I can't stop thinking about it.

    Munchy,

That's so sad. This breast cancer deal is a crap shoot. Now, though, your family can be a comfort to his cause you've been thru it.

Munchy, what sad news. This bc wrecks so many people's lives.

On a happier note, this weekend I talked to this friend of mine, a gorgeous, fifty something yo lady, who had bc twice, did it all, chemo, rads, double mast, reconstruction, and tamoxifen. She is doing great, living a very full life.

Virginia, congrats on your year out!

    Monday...

Have to share a story after reading about larousse talking to a friend who had bc twice..I was in a store a few weeks ago going commando and this woman in about her late 50's said to me "I had your haircut 3 times..so what kind did you have?"  After a 30 minute talk I found she had stage 4 BC at 36 yrs old and told only 6 months to live..and there she was in all her beauty!!  After our talk she came around from behind the counter and hugged me with such a passion.  That inspired me to stay on the tamox and ride thru anything I have to!

Virginia..we have a wii and hubby and I are yet to get rockstar but I think that is in the very near future since he is a frustrated rock star himself.  We play bowling but our favorite is pinball.  Also found the tennis and boxing can actually give you a great workout!!  I end up drenched in sweat..hmm..could that be the hot flashes??

larousse and Susie2- great to hear uplifting stories of BC SURVIVAL!!  I guess we ALL fall in to that category.  My mother's cousin (who is 80+) called me when she found out I had BC told me that she had BC in the 1970's and she was a survivor...  Also very encouraging...it doesn't have to be a death sentence.

Susie- you HAVE to get Guitar Hero!!  It's AWESOME!  I am completely and totally obsessed.  There's a guy here who has it so we talk about it all the time, although he plays on the "hard" setting which is insane.  I can barely do the "easy" level.  It's great fun and a good distraction...and it keeps me from shoving food in my mouth.  (I did try the boxing and you are right!  I worked up a sweat as well!!)

Now, the Wii Fit...which is why I totally bought the Wii in the first place...well, that's gathering dust, which is shameful.  I'd rather be a chubby rock star I guess!

    LOL

In my top 5 SE's from Tamox, I fogot to mention the annoying charlie horses in my calves and feet...  I think that might actually be the most annoying lingering SE I've had...

Today was Day 19 for me.  I saw my onc today as he wanted to know how I was after being on it for a month (it took FOREVER for the dumb mail script to come to me, so my appointment for a month out turned out to be only 19 days).

The onc asked me if I'd had any hot flashes and I said no.  He said that if I were to get them, they would have already happened (wow, that's fast).  So maybe I'm lucky and won't get any.

He said the other big SE is vaginal discharge.  Don't have that either.

     So far, so good.

Ok, Larousse ... its a total of 1826 days (forgot about leap year!), and I'm at .038%.  LOL!  It won't go as quickly as the rads, eh!   I think I had a hot flash last night!?  I woke up around 4ish, really hot, kicked off the covers and went back to sleep!  So, not sure if that was one or not!

Munchy, that's really sad about your neighbor, but we can all "pay it forward", to those who need it.  My boss called me last week and asked if I would call his wife.  She just found out she had BC.  Their son is getting married in November and she's so afraid of not being 100% for that special day.  All I did was listen, and I'm hopeful I was able to help her.

Tomorrow is a special day for me, as it's my 25th wedding anniversary.  Hubby and I will be home alone as my son is at football camp and my daughter is visting friends in Chicago.   I'm hopeful that the Tamaxofin side effect that was in earlier postings will kick in!!  LOL!!!!  I'm looking foward to enjoying the day and putting the worries aside.

Hope everyone has a good day.  Smile

    Hi,

After taking Arimidex for 17 months, with continuing severe side effects [pain, bone loss, low libido, etc.], my new oncologist [thank you!] suggested that I switch to Tamoxifen, and rather than take Fosomax D, use Reclast infusions once a year to conteract the severe bone loss.  Within a few weeks, the bone and joint pain that I had been experiencing was gone.  I'm not even taking Aleve any more.  My libido has improved, but that could also be attributed to not being in constant pain.  She talked quite a bit about balancing choices and quality of life, and for me, I was at a higher risk of breaking a bone than cancer recurrance.  Everyone is going to react to the various hormone therapies differently, so I'm glad I made a decision to try something else.  Take care!
