PitPat - Welcome to the TammiBabes - Sorry you have to be here with us but you will get all kinds of good information here and a laugh or two. I am post menopausal and taking Tamoxifen for 5 years. I tried both Armidex and Femara and had too many bad side effects to continue with either one. I have not heard that recurrance is greater after 5 years of Tamox VS the aromatase inhibitors. There tends to be so much conflicting information out there and all we can do is be vigilante and do our own research and hope we can trust what our MOs tell us.
Tink - Welcome home - hope you had a nice vacation.
TGIF - TAMMIBABES!!!

Paula have a great time this weekend.
Pitpat welcome--my MO told me I would stay on tamox and that if I went through menopause in the next 5 years he would then switch me to an AL for 5 years. I am 49 so I know menopause is just around the corner.

I am was 51 when I started the Tamox and my menopause was chemo induced. In July it will be 2 years. Since starting with tamox I have a small caterac (Tamox may have caused or not). In April I had a uterine byopsy and pelvic ultrasound, showed endometrial thickening and fibroid - B9 I have had many aches/pains in feet and legs. PC Dr. says that pain is weight related not tamox. I will be going to onc in August so I guess I will find out then if I will stay on Tamox or go to AI - not sure what the plan is for me yet. I'm not sure how to interpret the stats I have read about recurrance, the wording seems to confuse me. Last year when I wanted a Tamox break I was discourage by Dr. and NP because of high grade and oncotype score, so that is probably a factor for treatment also.
Have a great and safe July 4th weekend!

Some of the studies I saw showed better outcomes with AI for 5 years for POSTmenopausal women, or 2 years of tamoxifen + 3 years of AI is almost as good, but for premenopausal, just tamoxifen is used. I don't have the citation source right now, but can get it if anyone wants it. They are also looking at longer than 5 years for AI, but it runs in my mind that some studies have not shown better outcomes with longer than 5 years on tamoxifen.

Linda - Most of the studies I have read say there is no added benefit with Tamoxifen beyond 5 years. Unfortunately for me, I am postmenopausal and can not take the AIs so I am stuck with Tamox for the duration and have to hope for the best beyond that.

Jo, you are right about the no benefit from more than 5 yrs of tamox, but they are still looking at that AI.... but the SEs from the AIs seem to be horrendous for those who get the SEs, so the 5 yrs of tamox is just what is available now. With your positive attitude, I am sure your immune system is so boosted that you will do great!

Linda - I have been on the T for 6 months now and no problems - in fact it actually reduced my hot flashes and I can even sleep at night. Life is good!

I also was on the 2 years on Tamoxifen, and then 3 years on an AI... I took Femara last year, but...
It really did a number on my bones... my bone density is now very low... I switched back to Tamoxifen.... Don't know if it would have been better to stay on the AI... I took Femara... but at what cost... no bone densit y??

Happy Canada Day and 4th of July!!! I am back from PEI and had a blast....I love these school trips....spending the weekend with 21 people from different countries as they experience our Maritimeculture is great and so is just getting to know them other than when they are in my office asking to change a class or whatever....spending it with my two colleagues is also grand...sun (a bit...eventually...where is summer?!?!?), some red wine, a play, lobster, catching up with some old friends...the perfect weekend really. Felt sad coming home though...starting to feel a bit lost in my life , if that makes any sense. I can't go on the tamoxifen again an drealize since my blood tests are back that I am not post-menotpasual yet...so now thinking they may suggest taking my ovaries so i am post with out estrogen firing through me....the idea of medication scares the crap out of me....before i was thinking I would fly solo...no meds but then it ups my numbers doesn't it...need to rethink this soon.

Jo/Tink/Sherry- Thank you ladies....spent the day in the sun with a galpal who decided to distract me from my thoughts with a whole bunch of busy-ness....lunch on a patio downtown, a pow wow in the commons, a hula hoop lesson....all accompanied by nothing-serious chatter....exactly what was required...home now and doing busy things here too to distract myself...laundry, supper and a bit of reparation work for tomorrow's large intake. Can't prepare in advance for it any more than we already have so....plan on sleeping solidly tonight so I am ready for it! Thanks again for being there ...three muskateers you are. I appreciate it!
Sherry- hope you are feeling better!

Sandee yes I am feeling back to normal.
And tink yes I have had fun. spent the day yesterday with 3 of my friends. we all have birthdays in June. One of the gals threw together the day at her house around the pool with a cabana girl to wait on us. She made us drinks, then served us fresh fruit, then nachos, then cake. We never had to get out of the water and do a thing. Then we went and had pedis done and out to dinner. today I ended up putting up 22 pints of tomatoes.
Next Saturday am getting together with my childhood girlfriends (the ones I take a weekend trip with every year) for a day of shopping in Wimberly. That should be lots of fun.

Just got back from having dinner with DH and friends at Olive Garden. We got out with these friends once a week - they are on some diet and Sundays is their "splurge day". It was good timing - DH and I celebrate our 38th weddin anniversary tomorrow.
We will have a cookout for the residents left in the park and then relax the rest of the day. My kitchen project is slowly coming together. Am in the process of making curtains and DH is getting the new doors ready to stain.
Have a Good Night TammiBabes!

Jo ~ Happy Anniversary ! 38 years is wonderful ~
Happy almost 4th of July everyone. We went to the beach early this am, then clouds and rain rolled in came home and went in the hot tub for a bit then we went out to dinner with the kids. Now they are watching a movie that I am completely uninterested in. I swear I have ADD. is that what it's called? Attention Disorder.? I am exausted would love a nap now and watch some late night tv.
Hugs to all my tamibabes !

Alicia- thanks! ....this is me pre-empting the oncologist's words, mind. I asked my gp to send him the results of my blood work in May (clearly stating I still have estrogen firing!)...asked her if I really needed to do it again in July..how much can it change in 3 months?....since she said no, we sent it on (my oncologist had told me after the heart attack to wait andhave my blood work done in July...likely thinking it would freak me out less...but I went to my dr. and asked for the requistion in May to get it out of my head....)not a lot of options for a gal who is not post-menopausal and can't take tamoxifen....except eating well, exercizing, de-stressing and / or getting rid of a few more parts...not something I want to do.
Tink- the cupcakes sound grand!...and enjoy the Tammi break....heck of a way to have to get it though! Thinking of you.
Alicia- sounds more like systems overload than ADD (:) How are the meds working for you?
Sherry- SO glad to hear you are back to feeling better!

Thanks everyone for the anniversary wishes. There is a story behind why we got married on the 4th and one day I can share if anyone is really interested. That was not our original date we set to get married and had to move things up - and no is was not because I got pregnant - was not fortunate enough to ever have children.

Alicia how is the new med working for you?
Jo now I am in suppense you will have to share your story

Sherry - We were supposed to get married in August 1973. A couple of months before that hubby got orders to go to Thailand for a year - he was already in the Air Force. We wanted to get married before he left so we could get the extra money as a married couple. I would have to stay in the states and decided to stay with my parents - I could not affort to live on my own. Anyway, back in those days, hubby had to get permission from his commander to get married, we had to go to some premarital counseling classes on the Air Force Base and the only day the chapel on base had an open date was on the 4th of July. Three weeks after we were married he shipped out to Thailand and I stayed with mom (I was 18 at the time) and spent the year going to cosmetology school on a scholarship. It was quite an interesting year.0
