Ok am abit spooked out right now. Up until having breast cancer I was a healthy woman. I never really went to the doctor for much. There really wasnt a need for me to unless I was sick. That wasnt that often. If I needed something for relief that could be taken by an OTC med I just went that route or just sucked it up and let it take its merry course. Well anyways my hot flashes came back with a vengenace and it seems to me the Effexer wasnt working anymore. The last Onc visit she was wanting me to try something else for them. I was wanting to be a big girl and take care of it myself. Well after having them so bad agian I deciede to break down and call her to get the other stuff she was wanting me to try. Well I went to drugs.com to look stuff up. Well lets just say now Im a bit freaked out about taking it. Its called gabapentin. The warnings on the bottle are enough to make me scared outa my wits. I had no issues of doing chemo knowing what the SE of that was, but now this kinda freaks me a bit. Am I over thinking this or what. The main reason this drug use is for sesuires, which I dont have. And they say to wear a braclet so the medical personal know your taking it. Just wanting to know if any of you ladies are taking this and have had no issues. Or do you think I should just put my big girl panties on and take the pill?

Hi, Ladies:
Happy cancerversaries to MamaV, June and Paula. Linda, will be thinking of you on Thursday. No reason to be anything but positive. We've got some good karma going here, and in any case, we'll all be in this together.
Well, I spoke too soon. No hot flashes after the ooph for six weeks and they're suddenly back. Wish I could figure out the physiology of this (maybe there was still some leftover estrogen, and now it's all gone?) but I think my guesses are all pretty primitive, so why try. Was very professional to be out with a client helping her choose a floor when I suddenly erupt like a volcano in sweat. Love that.Oh well.
Paula, re taking that medicine, here's my two cents. I hate taking medicine and it sounds like you don't like it much either. I'm resigned to taking the tamoxifen (don't feel I have a choice) and I should take my asthma medicine, although I don't regularly like I'm supposed to (bad patient, I feel ok most of the time so I don't take it, but its supposed to be maintenance, taken every day.) I occasionally take something to help me sleep and do take xanax before unusually stressful situations, such as mammograms. This is all way more medicine than I'm used to taking and I'm not happy about it. I am so glad at least I don't have to have the lupron shots any more after the ooph, but still too much. I don't know how bad your hot flashes are and I imagine everyone feels them differently, but I suggest trying the diet route before you take more meds that make you nervous. Wanna know how I'm sure that hot flashes are connected to diet? I usually have many a day, sometimes once an hour. On Yom Kippur (a Jewish holiday in October that is a fast day) you don't eat or drink a thing for 24 hours. Though fasting isn't easy, you know I didn't have one hot flash during that 24 hour period! I know we can't give up eating (though I'd probably lose that 15 lbs of baby fat (she's 14 years old....) but I started to pay attention to what foods brought on the flashes. No white flour, no sugar, helped. Eating very healthy and drinking lots of water also helped. Sometimes nothing helped, but I noticed they were better if I payed attention to eating well. Just think you may want to try this and see if it helps you. You can always switch to the medicine if it doesn't work.
Anyway, hi to everyone. Lots of love, I'll be coming to the US in January to be with my Dad as he undergoes his leukemia treatment. Hard, but so far he's doing ok with the chemo. Milder effects than 20 years ago.
So I'll at least be on a similar time zone and can wave from closer,
Love, Shari

Paula66 regarding gabepentin the other Paula has taken this so maybe she will chime in but I don't think she had any bad SE's. DH takes it for his neuropothy. In low dosages he does OK on it, high dosages not so much. Makes him like a drunk man ( stumbles around, swayes and slures his speech).
eulabt happy cancerversary
Shari I have noticed that sugary things and alcohol bring on my hot flashes as well. I was doing so good and then we celebrated Christmas this last weekend with my kids. Well we ate and drank too much. So the sugary things and the alcohol made my hot flashes worse. Last night I actually woke up sweating. yuk. I think my body is going through detox of junk fook and alcohol. I'm usually not a big drinker but we were being festive and now I am paying for it.

Paula66, I tried gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy and had a pretty bad experience with it. It didn't seem to have any effect on the hot flashes, and it did something to my brain so that I couldn't carry on a social conversation, much less put together and present lectures to health professions students at a professional level. And I felt very uncoordinated, kind of like I was in a fog all the time. A friend of mine is taking it for trigeminal neuralgia, and it is helping but makes her very groggy and she is also having trouble teaching at times.
I do tend to respond poorly to any drug that affects the nervous system - may be why I got the neuropathy from the taxotere to begin with. Also, if any of you have had peripheral neuropathy, you are at much higher risk for neuropathy from a BUNCH of other drugs - mine flared up with Levaquin (known to cause neuropathy!). I am with you on taking as few drugs as possible! I am down to tamoxifen and vitamin D, and am trying to go off Effexor, but still use the ambien, xanax, and pain meds only as needed.
Shari, I try to eat a healthy diet, but have gotten onto a real desert kick lately, so will pay more attention to this. Maybe I can keep those hot flashes at bay as I go off the Effexor if I ditch the deserts as well.

Paula so sorry that you have to make yet another decision on a medication to take. I so wish I had words of wisdom or advice to offer, but my unopened bottle of effexor still sits on my counter, so see I have an issue with meds too. Whatever you do decide I am here for you and am praying that you are feeling better hugs!!!

Good News: For the first time, I have gotten out of my bed without the aches and pain in my Hips, legs and ankles. Hallelujah!! This is big for me. I hope it continues this way. WISHING THE SAME FOR ALL THOSE SUFFERING FROM THE ACHES AND PAINS OF TAMOXIFEN.
Last week while doing a BSE, I felt a little bump -- just under my skin where the skin was peeling from radiation. It has not changed in size. It feels like a boil and hurts a little when i press on it. It is about .5cm. I am not worried but will let the BS know about it next week. However, I am just curious if any one of you ladies had anything similar.
Thanks,
.

Just found a link on hot flashes that might be of interest: http://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/570671
I have communicated with Dr. Loprinzi about chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and have discovered he is very involved in several areas of research that affect breast cancer patients.

OMG all I know is I'm not taking that crap anymore. OMG it was like I had been coming off days of drinking and I dont like it one bit. I cant take that crap and do certifications next week. Let alone teach a group of men how to use inspection tools that I have never used and have to learn how so I can show them how. Plus I am not going to be like this and use a band saw or cutting wheels. Let alone a torch, NO thank you. I will kill myself. That is some nasty stuff n this chic will not take it again! I was a dooling idiot today. I have to inventory the weld shop and stood there looking at parts that I have seen for the last 10 years and am like really what heck is that one. Then trying to stay focused so I could count OMG, what used to take me minutes to do took most of an hour because I couldnt remeber or stay focused. I didnt crawl outa the bottom of a vodka bottle 8 yrs ago to feel like this ever again! I will gladly eat the med copay and flush that nasty crap down the toilet cause this chic aint doing those nasty pills ever again!
Congrats Allenan on the pain free feeling. Its so good to have those days isnt it! Im sorry I cant help you on the bump part I didnt have rads. Im sure on of the rad girls will be able to help ya on that one!
Thanks for the hotflash info Linda I will check it out for sure. Plus I will pass the info onto my way older sissy cause she is having them bad, hee hee. They arent BC related just due to her age, hee hee!

Paula!! How much do they have you on?? AND did they start you slow and gradually go up on the doses??? My dr did I started with 100mg, then, 300mg then 400.....I am now at 1600mg a day and don't have any of the side affects or feeling like that that you are talking about....wow....hate that it did that to you, cause I have noticed a big difference in the "stingy, sentsitiveness I had in my breast. The stabbing jabbing pains are still there if I don't use my pain patches, and there are times they even are worse and I have to use them and the loratab. but have so much more relief from the "I guess you would say...."Nerve ending pain".... I could not even TOUCH my nipple, or have anything touching it.....clothes, bras anything about drove me crazy before we got it to this level that I am on now. I am scared NOT to take it now!
JO Congrats girl !!!!!
