    Virginia,

I am SO sorry to hear about your dad.  I know how close you were and I'm thankful that you were able to go to LA and still see him.  He waited for you.  He knew you were home safely, like he always made sure.  He's still looking out for you.

You are in my thoughts as you get through the next few days.  I hope you can feel the hugs coming your way.

    Your tamoxi-pal,

    Deb

Hey Ladies!!!  I survived Ike!!  My yard, a car and the garage did not! But hey.....I can replace those things. Water did get in the house about 2", but it is all fine now! Have no power and was told it would be 30 - 45 days without. Had to buy a generator this morning, and ran with my computer to plug it in! hahaha  Have trees and power lines down all around us! It is really bad.

Hopital did call and cancel all my test for 2 weeks, so we will have to wait to find out about the liver! Will try and stay in touch!  ((((((((((hugs to all))))))))))

    Dear Virginia,

I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's passing...you're in my prayers at this difficult time.  Deb is right-he waited for you to make it home and once he had seen you, he was able to let go.  Take care of yourself.

Hi all - condolences to Virginia, and emath glad you are safe.....

I have been on the tamox train for a month now.....hot flashes are no worse than when they started, I agree with some that the vaginal wetness is a wonderful change from the dryness...

I take my tamox in the morning and my biggest issue is that by 7 pm my feet hurt and I get some wild pains in my legs for awhile....luckily by that time I can sit around and do nothing.

I exercise regulary....running and wt lifting and sometimes after running my feet ache also....I am a PE prof and CC coach so getting rid of running is not really and option...plus it keeps me sane

I want to know if anyone else has these problems with feet/legs....also someone mentioned that it could be leftover side effects from the taxotere....what do you guys think...have a wonderful day

HI Sharon - I haven't experienced the leg pains that you have, but I have had a few cramps in my calf muscle (only on the right leg).   And when I am due for my period, my legs are achy, the same as before this "BC journey" started.

One suggestion is to change the time you take the pill, from the morning to before bed .. maybe this will help the symptoms?

I also exercise daily, not running, but briskly walking.  I also think it helps with the sanity level.  That's awesome you are a CC coach!

My son's high school is participating in a breast cancer walk in Boston on October 5th.  He came home the other day and asked if I would do the walk with him.  I've participated in walks before, but this will be the first one since my diagnosis.

    Hang in there everyone Embarassed

    Sharon,

Have you discussed your symptoms with your oncologist?  You want to rule out or deal with any circulation problems which the leg pain after exercise can be a symptom of, since blood clots are a potential SE of Tamoxifen.

This is one of those times it is better to be checked by a doctor.

Hopefully it is no big deal, or a leftover from the taxotere, but this is not something to ignore or take lightly until you know for sure.

    Hi, girls--

<:AtomicElement>Hope everyone is doing okay.  I'm about worn out...so much to do at school these days.  That's okay, though...a heavy caseload=job security, and it keeps me off the streets.  With all the craziness in the economy (EEK!  No more Merrill Lynch or Lehmann Bros.--greedy b%(^#*^3s), I may never be able to retire.  Big sigh...

<:AtomicElement>This morning I woke up w/ pain in my hips like I haven't had in quite awhile.  What's up with that??  Sharon, I agree w/ PatMom--get your leg pain checked out; better safe than sorry.

<:AtomicElement>Ellen, so glad you're okay after Ike!  What a horrible mess over so much of the Gulf Coast.  There's a typhoon headed our way...supposed to be here by Friday.  It's been pinballing around the area--dumped 55 inches of rain on Taiwan--and then headed toward mainland China before taking a turn.  We probably won't get anything except some wind, but we can use the rain.  I'm hoping for a day off school. ;-)

<:AtomicElement>Hope our Virginia is doing okay...such a rough time for her.

<:AtomicElement>Basha, Harley, Deb, Barbie, Murph, etc.--here's hoping all is well with you!  Take care, ladies...

Lynn, that is a curious thing; maybe your computer has a message and telling us all we are atomic elements (suppose so?), sometimes when I edit an entry to correct a typing error I see an error message, yet it has always finished fine. Hope rain comes your way, we had downpours here in NC yesterday and the skies are taunting the same today.

Lynn, Murph and Sharon, I get leg cramps, hip pains too and knee pains, but I think it is due to combination of my activity and the tamoxifen. I got advice on another thread (Cathi) to try detox soaks. I cup epsom salt/ 1 cup baking soda, for 10 minutes, then work your way up on time, soo far I have done 2 days in a row. but my soreness has eased up...the foot soreness is probably the worse...Went to see my Breast surgeon yesterday to check out some suspicious areas...and everything is OK.

I will have blood taken to check on the anemia tomorrow.

and will start a new job on sept. 29th.

Hi to all...Harley, Joan, Virginia, Basha, Pat, Ellen, Munchy, Sue,,,,,and all the others I forgot to mention, have a grand week!

To my cyber support team: Harley, Basha, Trish, Amber, Barbie, Tiff, Deb, Murph, Lynn, Sharon --- I LOVE you girls and I thank you for listening to me vent and cry over these past few months.  This journey feels even harder than the BC journey.  I THANK you from the bottom of my heart for all of the heartfelt condolences.  So many of my friends came to the wake --- it was so comforting.  I work with a great group of people.  Anyhow, I thank you ALL for the support...

Sharon- I too have the leg and foot pain.  I notice the foot pain when I get out of bed first thing in the morning...  Ouch ouch ouch as I trundle off to the bathroom.  I also get the pain when I am laying on the couch too long with my feet up playing the Wii (but we know that doesn't happen too often...not).

Lynn- I had the hip pain last week.  Both sides...  It was really weird.  I am very thankful that it is only occasional (and random).  i don't see any pattern to it.

Murph- way to go for you son doing the BC walk.  My local library is doing one and they invited me to walk with them...

Ok, again, thanks for the cyber support...I truly appreciate it...

    Much love,

    Virginia

Hi Ladies - Thank you for the advice.  I have a call into the NP at the oncology office....she is usually a little easier to get in contact with.  I also have my followup visit since starting tamox next Friday with the onc.

I thought about taking it at night, but I was afraid I would have the pain in the morning.  Now my thought is to take it at lunch time....but that might be hard to remember....

Murph - The BC walks are incredible, I did a 5K in May with my 4 best buddies...and it was amazing!

    Have a great day

    Hey ladies,

I love you all!  I just want to thank you for all your kind words of advice.  I can just feel the love on this thread!  You all care so very much, and it shows!

So... my news is that even though I had a bi-lateral mast., I felt a lump near where the originial bc was.  I saw my surgeon  yesterday, and he ordered an ultrasound of the 'breast' area, even though he said that he doesn't think it is anything to worry about, maybe just a cyst.  But, that is what the gyn told me last year, when she felt that lump, and we all know how that turned out.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that even if you have had a mast., there can still be suspicious lumps that pop up and scare you.  I'm going for my u/s on Oct. 2nd, so it even seems that they aren't in a huge rush to get it checked out, and that is a good thing!

Oh, and there is another thread on here about neck stiffness & pain, related to Tamoxifen, and I think that may be my problem.  If it is still bothering me, I will ask my surgeon to order an MRI.  My dh thinks this neck pain is caused by my being online all the time!  lol

It seems like it is always something!  I just got finished with those uterine polyps, and the D & C last month...  Will things ever just get back to 'normal'?

    Amber,

Where is Albemarle, NC?  You may have told me and I forgot...  my memory is gone!  I live in NC also, but near the beach, in S.E. NC, near Calabash, and only 3 miles from the NC/SC state line.  It's nice living in a resort area.

Where will you be working?  Good Luck with your new job!!  Congratulations!

    Virginia,

    Sending HUGS your way!!

    Sharon,

Please let us know what your dr. tells you about your leg and foot pain...  thinking of you, and hoping everything is ok.

    Lynn,

Hope you don't get hit too hard from the Typhoon!  YIKES!  Stay safe, my friend!!

    Sending HUGS to all!!

    Hello ladies,

Virginia - I'm happy to see you posting again.  Be kind to yourself, and don't try to get "back to it" too soon.  Although, I would prescribe getting back to some good old fashioned Wii therapy soon.

Amber, isn't Kelly Pickler (former American Idol contestant) from Albemarle?  She's from some ...marle anyway.  Glad to hear the suspicious areas turned out to be ok.

Harley, deep breath.  I'll keep you in my thoughts that your lump also turns out to be ok.  Yes, this is a crazy rollercoaster we are on, but we're on it together.

Sharon and other leg pain sufferers.  This is a tough one.  We don't want to call the doc with every ache and pain, so how can we tell the serious from the not so serious?  I think we need the reference point, so by all means, call the doc and be seen.  If it is nothing, you will now have a new reference point.  I was having an aching feeling, kind of like a toothache just above my left knee.  I had it for a few days, and it seemed worse in the evening.  I massaged the area, but that didn't really help.  It is better now, but that pain was a little different.

Ellen - glad to hear you survived Ike.  I'm sorry you have to wait a couple more weeks to get to the bottom of your liver issues.

OK, here are the results from my non-scientific night sweats study.  My night sweats are definately related to my cycle.  While I have occassional NS throughout my cycle, this is the second month in a row that the week before my period is dreadful.  Last night I had three separate episodes.  I was completely drenched each time.  Even my ankles - which is so weird to me.  My water bill from all this extra laundry is going to be sky high!  I have seen the NS increase in magnitude and frequency as the week goes on.  I guess the Tamox is doing something.

Make it a great day, ok?

hi all, good to hear from you Virginia! Still thinking of you as this loss is so dear.

Sharon, I forget my tamoxifen sometime, but I am splitting my dose and taking it twice and I like it better....let us know what your onc.nurse says.

Harley, I really feel for you, I had to close my eyes when I think of the suspicious lump on your mast. scar....seems like a long time to wait...October to get U/S. glad you found another thread related to the neck!

Albemarle is near Charlotte, NC, and Yes Barbie, Kellie Pickler is from here...we have another famous as of late Bradley Holt, plays for the NY Mets (just started this season) and he is related to us on my DH side.

I put 2 resumes in at a nursing home that needs help (and a dear friend is a resident there), and believe it or not I put a resume in at my oncologist office...I heard they were short handed...but when I dropped it off the receptionist told me they had just hired someone... I will start on an as needed basis at the nursing home on Sept. 29th.

Barbie, you are right the Tamox is doing something!!! I usually end up taking two showers a day...and my daughter asked me to cut off the air last night, that she was freezing in her room..I went in her room and it felt great! but I did turn the AC off until she went to sleep...I only woke up twice last night....I left the comforter off of me...and I think I didn''t sweat as much.

    God Bless All,

    Amber

    Hugs,

    Hi Dears,

Glad you're feeling our love, Virginia! You are in my heart.

I too have foot pain, Sharon. Hip and leg, too. Like you, I am a jock. I row and coach rowing, and ski all winter. But I never had this soreness before. My solution is biweekly massage , Advil, and a yoga class, which helps with the hips. Good luck and WELCOME!!Basha

I've been on Tamox for a week.  So far, so good---just waking up hot and have lowered the AC.

Question:  My Onco told me to take Tamox twice a day for 2 or 3 weeks, then start taking both pills together after that.  What's the difference?  It doesn't seem like it would make a difference as to whether I took one pill in the morning and one in the everning or just taking them both at one time.  Anyone know about this?  Just curious.

    Goodnight,

    Tami

Tami, I don't think there is a difference, my onc told me to take 20mg once a day, but after trying it I decied to take it twice a day and I like that better, you are still getting the same milligrams.

Hi all - The NP called back.  Said that if it was clots there would be constant pain.  Suggested I take the tamox at noon for a week and see if that changes anything....so I have my watch alarm set for noon today.

Basha - Yes, when running this morning - I had the thought are my legs ever going to feel better when running????  Then my feet are still aching.  But the running keeps my mood good.

Will try the detox soaks and see if that helps.

Meeting a friend from college at our old college JMU for a Jim Brickman concert tonight.  She had sent me his cd's while I was doing chemo...and I actually donated one to the rads people because they were always looking for calming music.  So should be a good night.

    Everyone have a good day

Thanks for all your concerns! Japan I hope all goes ok with you. They told us yesterday it may be 3 more weeks without power out in my area. The insurance can't make it out for a few weeks. So we are trying to get our lives back to normal as much as possible. It has not been easy. I am so tired and now I am really hurting. Did not realize just how big some of these trees are!!! Will try to stay in touch. I hook up to the generator a few times a day! (((((((((hugs to all))))))))))))

    To all the riders,

Hope you are having a good day. The weather has been wonderful here, finally.  Even mowed on Tuesday!

To all the joint pain sufferers,

I had ankle/knee pain for the longest time after starting on this train.  But I agree that the doc needs to check the leg pain.  I had some calf pain and the med onc had me do a artery/vein U/S that day.  Turned out to be nothing, but they definitely take it seriously.

    To Amber and Harley,

You NC gals need to watch out for those bad storms. I think you were spared this year -- unlike the Gulf Coast.  Galveston/Houston is still reeling.  My dh's nephew and his family in Houston are still without power.  But they are ok, thankfully.

    Lynn,

Keep your head down with that typhoon!  Flying debris can be bad too.

     Virginia,

It's great to hear from you.  I know you're doing well when you start cracking jokes and playing WII.  That's the Virginia we all know and love.

Well, ladies, I have the formal interview for this other part time job on Monday and it turns out that they will also need a full time receptionist when the current one retires in December.  So both people will talk with me at this Monday meeting.  Keep your fingers crossed. I'll keep you posted.

Deb, so glad for you re: the interview, will say a prayer!

Ellen, glad you are hanging in there...3 weeks is a long time,,,,hope it happens sooner

Sharon, glad you are having a fun night, enjoy the concert..

Waiting for my bld results on the anemia....I feel so good, so I didn't take the ferrous sulfate today, in hopes that they will discontinue it....bt I haven't heard from them,,,the onc. nurse usually calls me after 6pm the day the blood is drawn to let me know the doctors orders...

    God bless all

    Good morning, ladies.

Good luck to all who are awaiting testing or the results.  We can all appreciate the anxiety that brings.

Also, good luck to those who are interviewing for jobs.  Knock it out of the park on your interviews.  I can't imagine having to job hunt ... I have been with the same company my entire career.

Just when I think I have things under control, something changes.  I got my period on Wednesday, which was very, very early for this month.  And it is extremely heavy ... enough that I had to purchase the night-time Always (of course, Always, I work for P&G!).   It is a little embarassing also, as I had to wash the sheets this morning (poor hubby).   This is not the best time for this as I am running a scholarship drive tomorrow for my town's high school and I would rather not have to deal with this issue!   At least my son doesn't have a football game tonight so I won't have to worry about that!  Last Friday night we had to drive to the Cape (Falmouth, MA) for his football game, so I feel fortunate we don't have to deal with that - that was about a 90 minute ride.  Wouldn't that have been a little embarassing to ask our friends we carpooled with to stop so I can use the bathroom.

To quote Gilda Radner: "It's always something."

The weather here in Boston is picture perfect. Fall is in the air.  I feel for those who experienced the hurricane.  It's unbelieveable to see the destruction it caused.  I just hope the govt comes through this time for you guys.

    Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Layne, you have are funny "whole page" I feel like I do that some..but you are good to keep up. Thanks for sharing your story on the liver...the liver effects of tamoxifen are one of the things I think alot about, but it sounds like the lipitor v/s tamoxifen have affected your liver....

I wonder how often med onc are suppose to check the liver function while we are on tamoxifen? I was hoping every 3 months my onc would keep an eye on it. but I saw you med onc. set you loose for a year....will he be monitoring your blood work yearly? Layne did your onc tell you that the fatty liver would cleaer up after you finished the tamoifen?

I am in the achy joint club these days, have been tyring a bath detox the past 4 days and after the bath I have seen improvement and in the mornings the joint pain is fine, but as the day progresses the pain sometimes is bothersome (my fingers of all things) makes me not want to do to much.

Murph, I had a similar happening last month with my cycle and I noticed our dx dates are similar...I am on my 3rd bottle of tamoxifen how long have you been taking it? I had such terrible bleeding to, (and it came a week early and I have never been early). I didn't want to risk going anywhere..and I did leak thru even though I changed frequently. Love your quote 'It's always something".

Well I went to the onc office to get a copy of my lab work, and I still need to keep taking the iron supplement....I did some googling and radiation can cause anemia (blood marrow), cancer can too. but my surgeon checked all the suspicious spots. but I am feeling better...and the lab work is improving, but it must just take some time...It may be a combination of the heaviy periods and the radiation.

    hugs to all!

Dear Layne and all other train riders,

Yes, my son seems to be adjusting to college. He's getting great grades which really inspires him. We're all going out to Chinese tonite.

Cross fingers next Sunday. I'm racing a double boat with a 17 year old!! Hope she can keep up. (hee hee)

Hi all - Don't think the taking the pill at noon is helping much, I think the feet are getting worse, and tonight I am having terrible hot flashes...but today overall was a good one.  My women's cross country team came in 2nd at our meet and there were 13 colleges.  At the same meet, my son's team came in 1st and he was 2nd overall and got a PR.  And we heard from our other son and daughter in law in Germany.

See the med onc on Friday....I am getting my list of questions and concerns ready...Enjoy the weekend.
