An MRI of my lower spine also showed a large fibroid in my uterus. So my family doctor ordered an ultrasound which she will forward on to my Gynocoligist.I am beginning ti think when I see him in sept I should just schedule a hysterectomy.Take it all out including the ovaries.Any one out there been through this? How long is the recovery?

Mumito.  I had a hysterectomy on July 13.  I am a little over 2 weeks from surgery and doing great. I was up walking the day after surgery and able to go to the bathroom and shower on my own. I know the sooner I got out of bed the quicker the recovery.  GYN said recovery is 4 weeks and no lifting anything over 5 lbs for the first 2 weeks.  I am back driving and doing things.  The first few days I spent in my recliner resting.  I had to have an abdominal incision so I did have some pain associated with that.  My incision is healing nicely and I am no longer having to take pain pills.  I typically bounce back pretty quickly after surgery but not this one.  I did find the first week I would tire quickly and would rest when my body told me to.  I still have 2 weeks to go and am taking it easy - I am not back to my full routine just yet.  I can try and answer any and all questions you may have.

Thanks Jo I usually handle surgery very well but I had heard that this required a longer recovery than other surgeries.

I trust my specialist so I will see what he thinks early sept.I found my last endometrial biopsy quite painful.Would like to avoid anymore.

Mumito - You sound like me.  Unlike my recon surgery last year - I was back at work (desk job) in a little over a week and yes with drains, this one was a bit tougher but I gradually did more and more each day.  Frequent breaks are a good thing and really before you know it you will be back to doing everything you like to do.  Please keep me posted.

    Hello Ladies,

I have had some vaginal bleeding (spotting) and the gyn has recommended an endometrial biopsy.  The gyn tried this her office but failed because my cervix is closed due to scarring from a previous endometrial ablation.  This in-office procedure, was extremely painful for me and now she wants to do it in under general anesthetic with a hysteroscopy and D N C.  I am worried that she will not be able to do this even under general anesthetic.  Does anybody here have experiences to share? Thanks.

Mamglam, no experience with procedures since my Endo ablation in December.  So, sorry I can't help.  Interesting about the scarring ... hope I don't have any future bleeding and need to find out if I have the same problem.

For those facing endo biopsy and or decisions about hyster, I will add my 2 cents or is it 5 now that we don't have pennies anymore?  Biopsy was not hard, told to take a couple of Advil before and went well.  I opted for a hysteroscopy, DNC and endometrial ablation instead to deal with excessive bleeding from thick lining.  Hyster was an option, but was active before BC and hope to be more again and had heard things about issues that can arise.  Also my Dr. would have wanted to take my ovaries too and was concerned about the sudden meno (only 47) as my sister had one at 46 and lost 10% of her bone mass in the first year.

Hope whatever procedure you decide on that they go well and relieve your symptoms.  Jo I know you have struggled and so I am glad your Dr. finally agreed and that things are going well for you.

Thanks bgirl for the info.  The gyn had given me Cytotec to insert the night before and the morning of the biopsy.  I had also taken 2 Advils as well.  I feel that the gyn should have known that the cervix will not cooperate since I have had the ablation.  Just before she started, I did question her about the reliability of this test because of the ablation and she was surprised that I had had an ablation (even though we had talked about it previously).  I have read that cervical stenosis takes place after an ablation.  My main concern now is that, will she be able to open the cervix to get into the uterus for the biopsy(??).  I feel that I need to go back to gyn who had done the ablation.

mamglam - I have had 2 biopsies/D&Cs under general anesthesia and both went well.  Both times my gyn had difficulty getting my cervix to dilate but was successful.  The type of biopsy you gyn wants to do you don't want to be awake for or so my gyn told me.  Even with the prior ablation, he/she can do the biopsy.  I had mind done early in the morning as an outpatient and was home before lunch feeling good - no cramps, no pain, nothing.  I hope yours goes well.  Please keep us updated.

    Hi Jo,

Thanks for sharing your experience - this helps!!  I have been nervous because of my experience in my gyn's office for the biopsy.  I have a high pain tolerance and this pain I had was unbearable.  It took about 3 days to recover from it!!  My procedure has been booked for Sept.  I will certainly keep you updated.  Thanks again.

I think it is important for everyone one of us to share our experiences.  This thread has always been a wealth of information.  I would never have known about things like transvaginal ultrasounds if I hadn't been here.  At the end of the day, I have avoided so many problems and taken care of others through what I have read here.  All the pink sisters here are so wonderful and I am so fortunate to have met everyone of you.  Hugs & Kisses

Purl51 - I see you are in California and hope it is safe to assume Santa Barbara.  I am from Riverside - not too far south of you.  When to high school in Lompoc which is an hour north of you.

You went to HS in Lompoc Jo? We lived in Lompoc from 1980 to 2005 when we retired and moved to San Felipe. Now we spend only 5-6 months there and the rest in Rancho Cucamonga........small world! I have a endoscopic ultrasound scheduled in Riverside on Thursday. .....would welcome any company in my pocket!

I so agree with Jo- this board has help me so many times.  In fact in one of the clinic notes (I get a copy and read them all) the ON stated, "the patient is extremely educated and seems to know more than some docs."  And it is because of all the kind and giving people, on this board.

I want to thank Jo so much for answering my questions about the Uterine biopsy, I am very scared about this and you have eased my mind.  All your posts have really help me with the newest step in this journey.

Mamglam-good luck keep us posted.  I will also post my results.

Time for bed and to say prayers for all of us, I also believe God listens to us when we asked for directions and help.

Chachamom - I graduated from Cabrillo HS in 1973 and my younger sister graduated in 1983.  My father was in the Air Force stationed out at Vandenberg AFB which is where I met my husband and got married on the base.  I definitely will be in your pocket so make room.

Sharon - You are so very welcome.  I know how anxious you must feel and rest assured we will have a pocket party for you as well.  We will hold your hand and help you get through this.

As a side note, I went for an eye exam today.  First one in 5 years.  I didn't feel the need to one sooner and always found excuses not to go.  My glasses are so scratched and it was time.  My eye doctor recommended annual eye exam as long as I am on Tamoxifen.  He said visions don't happen very often but would rather be safe than sorry.  I am 58 and he did see the beginning of cataracts and there is nothing to be worried about right now.  Says this just comes with age.  Oh gee thanks!  hahaha

Thanks for the reminder, Jo. I've been getting all my glasses and exams in Mexico (cheaper) for the last five years or more, but since being on tamoxifen the last 1 1/2 years have not had a new exam and feel like my vision has gotten worse. I might bite the bullet and spring for a "real" exam.

Chachamom - I am close enough to the Mexican border here in deep South Texas to also take advantage of the cheaper eye doctors, dentists and pharmaices across the border.  I haven't been to an American dentist since we moved here in 1999.  There is a place across the border that many people go to to have their glasess made and say they are better than a lot of the places in the States.

I have to agree - the never ending joys of Tamoxifen!!

Endo biopsy was fine.  She did tell me to cough and that opened up my cervix.  I had my phone and was playing Candy Crush while she did the biopsy lol!!  She said she wasn't extremely worried, and that she would do an ultrasound at the time of my yearly OB visit in September.  I'll keep ya posted on the results.  Positive thinking!

How is the dental care south of the border?

melody46 - There are many excellent dentists south of the border that did their training in the US.  I have seen the same one for the past 12 years and never had one complaint.  The prices would shock you.  I had a bridge done in the front and the total price was $600.00.  To have a tooth pulled is around $40.00 and a standard cleaning will set you back a whole $40.00.

chachamom- hi there. I have been on tami over a year now, went to see my local eye doctor and he said my eyes were a bit worse for distance. Now I am wondering if it's the tami. I have been using dollar readers for years since I am farsighted.  I would go for the exam.

melody - I can't speak for the Arizona border towns.  I am in deep South Texas.  When you get to Tucson, ask others if they have gone and get recommendations.  Also, make sure the border town you are going to is safe.  I don't want to scare you, but there have been so many problems in some of the border towns, not all of them.  Also, if you do go, don't go alone.
