hahahahah! by the way Notself, all I can recall is something about Shroedinger's cat......is the cat there, or isn't it? or is it sometimes there & sometimes not.or is it a possibility wave? can you explain? (sort of)

-and yet, oddly enough I do love to say the Lord's Prayer when at funerals etc. - I just address it to the universe in general. also, I guess, since IMHO, since i do believe Jesus was also a buddha, and if he composed this, even though how it reads might not be what he had in mind, I do respect it.

But love both versions. Depending on who's saying it. clear as mud, huh?

never saw the FSM prayer b4 - wonderful.

Agree with Flannel too, the other one is appropriate at times, and addressed to The Universe here too...

Shroedinger's cat is a reference to a thought experiment on physics.  Here's a link.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOYyCHGWJq4

I went to gathering of people on Parliament Hill in front of the House of Commons in Ottawa on Friday. It was in support of the Sisters in Spirit, which is a call to action to our parliamentarians to focus an investigation of what in hell is happening in Canada that in the last 40 years 600 (six hundred) women of First Nations descent have been disappeared, and or been murdered or left to die by unknown assailants. There are roughly the same number of women in Ottawa as there are women of First Nations descent in Canada. ( source Thomas Mulcair, Ottawa journal). Surely if there were 600 women murdered or disappeared in Ottawa there would be a federal response. The provincial leaders all support this inquiry. All 12 of them. Only the federal government does not respond.

What I was struck by was the opening of the gathering led by elders, all women who prayed to their god in their own languages, one man an elder who burned sage and sweet grass. The prayers felt very Christian. But somehow it was totally right. We were after all on the un ceded territory of the Algonguin people who very generously welcomed us.

Since the First Nations people and their religion predate Christianity and most likely the Jewish religion, perhaps what you are picking up on is that Christian prayers sound similar to those of the First Nations.

Here is a link about the missing women from Amnesty International. http://www.amnesty.ca/our-work/issues/indigenous-peoples/no-more-stolen-sisters

    Kay,

thank you for doing that. Wish I could have been with you. The USA lost more than we can ever know, by how it/we treated our Native inhabitants. Makes me shudder when I think, as a child, how easily I accepted Columbus "discovering" America. Now it makes me cry when I think about it. A few, a very few, words, like "Chief Seattle's Speech" ( paraphrased) have come into the common culture, but so, so, so much has been lost.

Off to read notself's link. notself, repeating myself, but I SO respect your posts, and how much I learn from you, thank you.

Justin Trudeau posted this link on Twitter today. I found it a very interesting and enlightening discussion of North American history and treatment of Natives.

Another thank you , Lassie, I hadn't heard anything about this - and I follow quite a few media outlets, both in USA & Europe.

Also makes me want to go back and learn A LOT more about the 1812 War

    Hi All!

I just found this thread- it will take a few days to read through, but I am SO GLAD that you are all here and I am not the only non-believer in the cancer universe.

As well intentioned as they are, I've gotten to the point where I want to smack anyone that tells me they will pray for me (re:cancer.) I need science, good research, and medicine that works, not words into the ether. I do appreciate the love, but man, it is so hard to not say "if prayers worked, no one would have cancer in the first place."

Anyhow- hope everyone survived the holidays and is well.

Thanks. I have tried to use it as a mantra every morning for years, and it has become an hourly one the last 9 months. Doesn't always work, but, I have to try!

JWoo, I used to live in Houston, so I can imagine you're getting it from almost everyone. I only told a few people who knew better than to pray for me (most were atheists anyway). I always wanted a medal that said I am an atheist, call a doctor.

JWoo - welcome, I too like your byline.  Once, when a reporter asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama a very detailed question about his religion, the reporter went on & on, and HH answered: "My religion is kindness."

    My kind of religion.

    Thank you.

I was lucky enough to see him talk here once. The energy emanating from him and everyone there was amazing- lots of love and compassion. He simply talked about the importance of being kind to everything and everyone.

I think the basic lesson most  religions teach is the same at the core, but people can't see the forest for the trees. I noticed it in the 3rd grade-  I was in CCD (Catholic Sunday school) and no one could answer some very simple and logical questions, and got mad at me for asking. That is when the light bulb went on.

Wren44- I like the medal idea. hmmmmm. May have to see if any of my metal crafting friends would be into producing those...

I saw him when he was in Seattle and you're right about the energy. I always wondered about Jesus telling people to come with him and they did. When I saw the Dalai Lama in person, I understood.

I saw him in Toronto - he kept making jokes (about himself) and cracking up. He comes across so humble, he says things like My religion is kindness or The purpose of life is to be happy and to make others happy - sounds like simple cliches, but his intelligence and scholarship are so deep. we all stood up & cheered when he walked onstage. In Canada , we are not overrun with that American-style bible belt thing. Not one person offered to pray for me! But i do like it if someone sends a warm heart-mind vibe. As i do for others. Wishing for their well-being. Back to compassion. Welcome to the group and thanks for the wake-up, we've been hibernating. As I guess we should be, given this freezing snowy winter.

The worst part is that I have so many friends and family that are very religious. I don't discourage their prayers but it is kind of overwhelming.  I find myself doing a lot of eye rolling but as long as they feel better I'll continue to tolerate it.

The only time I mind people being religious is when they attempt to force their religious beliefs on others through the political process.  The Dominion types concern me.

So true Notself! I am a Pagan and not only do I get the 'pray for you speech,' but the 'conversion' one also! I finally have given up and just graciously reply to the 'pray for you' comment with my own  'please do, if it makes you feel better'.  It usually takes them a while to process that, and I have time to get away!

I worry about the Catholics buying up all the hospitals. I think they're doing it to try to stop abortions. They've bought about 5 in Washington in the past 2 years. They're also trying to stop paying for birth control for their employees. I think that's forcing their religious beliefs onto other people.
