Other explanations - the South is full of believers so Satan is punishing them for their beliefs?  Or God is testing them?  Or it's a case of big-oil greed and money-saving shortcuts?  Oops...that last one slipped out.  That's heresy in America!

I'm pretty sure the south is being punished. (tongue in cheek .. I'm a southerner)

Holy Smokes Enjoyful ... was British Petroleum really being greedy and cutting corners.  God forbid .. hence the punishment of the South!

BP pays a 7.8% dividend.  A dividend is equivalent to interest but is taxed at a lower rate and paid to investors instead of to lenders.   Try to find that return at your local bank.  They had plenty of money to do things right.

    Well sure they did.  Creeps.

Believe it or not (and I have a hard time believing it), some politicians think that coastal drilling is still a good idea.  It's just one incident in 50, or 70, or 100 years, after all.  Of course, he didn't address the 50, or 70, or 100 years it will take for the Gulf and other areas to recover.  If it ever does.

BUT -- it isn't the only incident with BP; there have been several in different parts of the world.  And within the last little while, the company has had over 700 safety infractions charged against it.  Compare that to the single-digit number of infractions against the other major oil companies, incuding Exxon.  But, like the coal company, nothing much seems to happen regarding those safety infractionsFrown.

Oh yes -- Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) is on record (as in: local radio station) as saying this was an act of God......

hmmm, what impact does "act of god" have on all the people and their insurance claims for damages caused by the oil?  Do you think there are some sort of exclusions or caps that might kick in if its an act of god versus neglegence?

Haha...good point, mama!  But I don't think any insurance company would buy it, not in a zillion years.

Dahlia - I think it was Rachel Maddow who showed clips from a similar leak that happened...25 years ago, maybe?  The company that operated the rig (the predecessor company to Transocean) tried the same things they're trying today, all without success.  And that was in just 200 feet of water!  Makes you wonder why technology hasn't advanced any further...oh wait, maybe because that would cost money?

Of course God is mad. Just ask the Phelps family. It's because the U.S. is going to overturn Don't Ask Don't Tell! <end snark>

I haev to admit I am surprised that no one has made that claim.

I just saw a movie this afternoon (a documentary I think?) that was more like a one-woman show titled "Letting Go of God." The woman was Julia Sweeney, a comedian and former Roman Catholic, which chronicles her transition from living a life "with" god to living one now "without" god. I found it very interesting, if not a bit sappy and over-done in some parts. I think she gets way too apologetic at times, but probably felt she needed to so that she wouldn't tick people off right off the bat.

Plus, it did drive home for me how difficult it must be for one who is truly indoctrinated into religion, especially given how many of our life-transitions center around religious rituals, to take that step out and away from the god-being delusion.

If anyone gets a chance to see it, I recommend it. I think it was on Showtime, but you may be able to find it on Netflix or even portions of it on YouTube or something.

PS: I didn't recognize who she was but my husband mentioned that she's the acress/comedian who played the andronginous "Pat" on SNL.

I hear that Sarah Palin is all for regulating oil companies, and for coming down hard on BP.  I didn't read her actual post, but apparently it's on her Facebook page.

If it's true, then I agree with her!

I'm not a twitterer, but I stumbled on this send-up of BP and thought others might enjoy it, too (if you haven't already seen it . . . they've been getting some press these last few days).  Pure genius, in my opinion.  And evidently, they're getting under the company's skin:

LOL!  Although it seems almost sinful to find anything funny about this.

So glad to see that the $75M liability cap will (probably) be removed, although the Brits are tearing their hair out because BP makes up a huge share of many pension funds.

But I just feel so badly for all those who depend on the Gulf for their livelihood, and the wildlife, of course.  I can't even bear to look at the photos....Cry  Madalyn, our kittycats are SO lucky (even when wet!).

Layne -- You've had your mom in your life for such a long time.  This will be a difficult few weeks (months?) but as long as you remember her, she'll always be with you. Love and hugs,   Linda

    Layne .. thinking of you.

EZ ... I saw the Julia Sweeney show awhile back.  I enjoyed it .. laughed and cried!  It was an eye opener for me, as I used to be a strong believer and had lost my faith.  It helped me lose some of my Lutheran guilt for not believing as I had in the past.

On another note ... noticed this a.m. that another political thread bit the dust.  I just don't understand it .. I wasn't posting, but was enjoying reading.  It was just get interesting debating the BP spill and onto the Chris Matthews documentary (which I watched).  Yep .. there were a few snarkey comments on both sides of the aisle, but nothing that warranted wiping out the whole thread. IMO.

Hope everyone has a good day!

    love,

    Bren

No Madalyn, it didn't get any better. The usual suspects were involved, pushing all others out again and spouting a similar level of vitriol. It provides an interesting window into one aspect of American politics but  . . . .

Hi Madalyn ... I read some of the threads from the "us" link.  I thought they were funny.  Some of the people had a good sense of humor/wit.  Kind of a free for all for all different kinds of people.

Thanks for the links.   Think I'll just stay around here "where everbody knows your name."

    hugs,

    Bren
