MaryNY, if you have 1 inch of hair, I would just go to the stylist and get a trim.  I haven't shaved mine since chemo and I am satisfied in how it looks.  I can't tell that the chemo fuzz has made much of a difference.

MarieK,  you long wonderful.  If I say you in your big glasses, I would  ask you for your autograph.  Miss Starling. lol

daffodil, great hair tale.  Mine is not long enough yet to see exactly what color it is going to be, but it does look like it is gray around the edges but brownish everywhere else.  I was a red head before chem, but probably 45% gray.  It may not be that same percentage when it returns fully.

Mommaof2, mine didn't seem to have any color at all at first, but within several weeks the color started showing.  It is still too short to be able to see exactly what it will do.

Charmaine, I added Biotin after  I was  finished with rads.  My hair is growing in fast, I don't know if the Biotin is working or not.  We may never be able to know for sure.

Navymom, sorry that you have such a rude and thoughtless MIL.  Some people  should just stop and think before opening their mouths.  I wouldn't let her discourage you from going topless in public, The people who love you understand.

Sherri, you are probably right on course with hair growth, it just doesn't seem to be growing to your standards.

    Have a great night ladies.

Charmaine - I'm taking Biotin right now through rads.  I checked with my rads onc and he said it was fine for me to take. Not sure if it's helping but I figured it couldn't hurt!

    Charmaine,

God love you for having the "balls" to have that pic taken.  I have been SUPER guarded about my baldness as I had beautiful hair before, and I feel like it's adding insult to injury to go "naked".  Well, maybe I need to just say what the 'F".  Only thing is I really don't like it either.  I feel like I look like a man with make up on.  Oh well, it is what it is right?

Anyway, you gave me inspiration, at least for tonight, and for that I THANK YOU!

    Hi Sharon,

Well I am happy that I gave you some inspiration.  I am now 9 weeks PFC and I have a fair amount of white hair but not any where near a inch or the amount that I have seen others have around my time PFC.   The hair is coming in white with some greyish and dark roots at the back and at the very top.  Unless people look at me up and close, one would think that I am bald.  There are many times that yes I do forget to put a scarf and/or hat on before I go out, but I do not have the courage to do that as of yet.

I have however shared that picture on my entire mailing list and many have told me that it took guts to do it...  I cannot imagine myself doing something like that in the past.

All you ladies here are my inspiration too.   Thanks too Sharon :)

    Hi Sherri,

re Biotin, on the bottle what strength of Biotin are you taking?  How many per day?  Now that I have finished RADS 10 days, I am probably before the weekend gonna go to the Health Store and purchase a bottle.

    Thanks Charmaine

Dublin4:  Nioxin is a range of hair care products. I just received mine today. I am 4 weeks PFC. The Nioxin website says you can use it while undergoing chemo treatment.

Lindasa: I can't see any instruction that says not to use it for hair loss from chemo, in fact their website says it's ok to use during and after.

Dublin4: Wish I'd known about it before I started chemo, but it can't hurt. Will start using it tomorrow. I got System 6 starter kit as I had medium to coarse hair. Also got the Follicle Booster. Cost a fortune $138 Australian Dollars but price should be no object if it helps.

    Mary,

I did not cut anything (just woolly neck trims) until August of last year....so about 6 months of growth. I could not face shaving the mouse fur..... the chemo-hair is, indeed, not alive..... just very dull and porous looking. My suggestion is to wait a couple of months. Sounds like your hair is growing quickly, so you will have some length to play with soon.

    Best of luck!

Juannelle: When I said I had one inch of hair, that's really talking about the longest hair. My hair is very fine and lies flat against my scalp so definitely not long enough to have a trim yet. For the first time, I can see the whorl on the crown of my head like you see on babies.

daffodil45: yes, the chemo hair is very dull looking. But I'm going to wait another while before cutting anything. So far my hair is almost completely white but my eyebrows came in dark. I'm hoping for some more color in my hair.

Anyone else have downy growthy on their cheeks. I think I used to have some tiny growth there before but now it's really fuzzy. Any suggestions on what to do about it?

My last chemo was March 1st. I staggered out of bed this morning to the bathroom...and of course my little cap had fallen off in the bed. I drowsily looked at my reflection in the mirror and became somewhat alarmed....as I saw a darkened area where the end of my hair line used to be.........suddenly I had to laugh and realized it was my hair finally starting to peek through!! YEAH!! I cannot wait until I can toss out the "rodent" I am currently wearing on my head!!Laughing

MaryNY - the downy cheek stuff has come up in conversation before. I - and several others - simply shaved it off!!! It took me a while to decide to do it but the fuzz was really bothering me. It is several weeks ago now, and my cheeks look fine - nothing weird etc.

pat555: Great to see those first hairs, isn't it?

LOL at the rodent! Not sure if my toupee is showing signs of wear, but it's beginning to look more pathetic by the day. At first I treated it with great care, putting it on the wig stand every night. Now I just toss it wherever I happen to be when I throw it off. I've gotten into the habit of throwing it onto the passenger seat in the car. Maybe someday it will just fly out the window.

Mary - I've gotten rather carefree with my wig lately, too.  However, I've found out that I really need to watch where it drop it because my dog has taken off with it a few times.  Now I have to make sure I put it somewhere high enough that he can't reach by jumping up. When it's on my head, he doesn't look twice.

    Hello ladies,

I am now just over 9 weeks PFC and for the past several weeks since my last chemotherapy I have been keeping a close watch and feel of my hair coming in.  Lo and behold as the days go by my hair has been feeling more like 'Peach Fuzz' (chemo hair).  I went to my Primary Care Physican on Tuesday to get started back on my B12 bi-monthly injections and he saw my hair and even felt it and said it felt more like 'Peach Fuzz' than (chemo hair) than health hair coming thru.  I went again to see my hairstylist this early evening (around 6pm) and had her check out my hair and she suggested shaving it all of and in fact she said the hair to now grow in will be more healthier as it is after chemotherapy.

The interesting thing now that I have discovered, is the hair roots of the hair under the peach fuzz are really very dark (nearly black), and the peach fuzz was all a mixture of white, gray and dark. and now the roots are very dark.  My natural hair color from eons ago (I have been dying my hair now since early 30's was dark brown with auburn highlights).   So I am really curious as to what color my hair is gonna turn out to be with these dark roots.  Hair Stylist feels the dark roots are salt/pepper... hmmm   I guess we will soon find out.

The hair stylist said that the hair will grow even faster now...  probably over the weekend and/or on Monday gonna go to the Health Store and pick up a bottle of Biotin.

Charmaine - so did your hairdresser shave it off?  Mine is salt and pepper, too, with an emphasis on "salt" in certain spots.

I'm 8 weeks PFC and just last week, my a lot of my eyelashes fell out and my brows.  But, almost overnight they started growing in and after a few days the brows were very visible and the lashes are about 1/3 of the way in.  I was shocked at how fast they shed and then turned around and came back. The lashes on top now have some very long ones that haven't fallen out and all the new ones that are short.  I think it looks weird.  Has anybody else had this experience?

Sherri - Yes she did shave my hair off and allowed for a bunch of it to fall into my hair so that I could feel the texture of it.   The hair was much like peach fuzz or how can I put it baby fine hair - it just did not feel like healthy normal hair.  So will be interesting to see what color it comes in - as she did not do a clean shave right to the scalp but clean enough that you just see stubbles of hair and are very, very dark.

As for eye lashes, a couple of weeks ago all mine fell out and then just last week I discovered that I have a layer of eye lashes on top back in. However just one odd thing, out of all the eye lashes that came back in, one eye lash is white.  Go figure?  (the white one is also long hmm.

    Well ladies I did it!

I have been going topless a bit more and more each day and last night I went out to dinner with my hubby and 2 other couples without a head covering!

No one took a second look - our friends did comment on how nice it looked and how much it's grown - my hair is short but I guess it's not ALARMINGLY short anymore.  I didn't get any rude stares or crying children pointing!

But now I'm very tempted to shave it off after reading what Charmaine has posted.  It is very peach fuzzy in texture and lies flat - dull and no body at all!

    What to do....

MarieK - Go for it and shave it off and have the hairstylist let a bunch of it go to your hands as mine did and you will see that it is not normal texture of hair (more chemo or poison chemical hair as my hairstylist called it).  My hairstylist said the hair will come in more normal texture afterwards and will probably grow in more faster too. :)

Charmane -  agree, it's definately is not normal hair.  I find mine to be thin and dry and I've already had it clipped a bit at the hairdresser...I'm thinking I should shave mine off, too. I do snip it every few days with a comb and scissors myself. I'm just over 8 weeks PFC.

Marie: I think my hair is at about the same stage as yours. You finished chemo earlier (Jan 19) while I finished on Feb 1, but my final four rounds of chemo were CMF which is kinder to hair so my hair had actually begun to sprout before I finished chemo. So I got a "head start."

Anyway, my hair is very fine and downy too. There are some dark hairs sprinkled through, but the overall look is light grey. I think if there was more color there, I wouldn't be so cautious about going wigless/hatless but so far I haven't.

Charmaine: I'm wondering if shaving our heads at this stage would just give the illusion that the hair is getting thicker and growing faster? Since hair is dead anyway, not sure how removing some would affect new hair growth. Maybe I'm just making excuses as I don't want to suddenly get rid of my 10-weeks worth of hair.

    Here's my current coif:

I've followed Marie's example and gone for the incognito look with sunglasses.

MarieNY - I finished chemo on February 2nd and I did not have hair anywhere near your hair growth, the amount of hair on my head only looked like I had peach fuzz on my head and unless you were really close up to me you would not notice I had hair growing on my head and would think I was still bald.  The drugs used for me were Texatere, Cytoxan and some other drug that starts with a D and do not remember that name.  My hair was growing then extremely slow.  I am gonna purchase a bottle of Biotin (doc said it was okay).  Your hair growth looks great.

Love your pictures (husband previousily tried to take pictures of my hair growth and not nearly as nice as yours)  Who took these for you, looks professional.

Thanks Charmaine! I took the photos myself a few minutes ago just by holding the camera at arm's length away from my face. Of course a lot of them were out of focus, so I just took the best three and cropped them. I used natural light, sun was just going down. I always have problems taking photos with flash and getting really harsh shadows.

I wish I had been taking hair photos every week to compare them and show how far I've come.

I haven't shared the photos I took of the top of my head. When I look in the mirror, I think I've a good covering but in the photos I can see my scalp still.

MaryNY - from what I can see of the pictures you took of your head shots, you have a pretty good head of hair.

When my hair starts to grow in a bit more, gonna give it a full week from today, and then will do weekly shots of my head hairgrowth. :) and upload here and to my blog.
