Charmaine:  my hair came in splotchy (my word) and my kind children (the 24 year old) told me I looked like a cheetah.  I had patches of silver, dark gray, mousy brown and white.  It did blend in and then changed colour again to a dark blonde with minimal gray.  I thought I was going to be really gray.  Of course, I hadn't seen my natural colour for at least ten years.  But, I was glad to have hair regardless of the colour.

janincanada thank you so much for replying to my post here about colour coming in splotchy.  As the way my hair colour is coming in was starting to concern me.  Every time I looked at my scalp, it almost looked as though I had a dirty scalp so to speak - because of the hair coming in as you put it splotchy (perfect choice of word) ;)

So by the time it all comes in, be interesting to see what color my hair is.

Oh my top eye lashes as starting to come back.  On my left eye I have about 5 eye lashes or maybe more and I noticed only 1 white one and so cannot wait for all of them to come in and if more of white ones come in will have to use mascara every day then lol

Well gals...........I did it.  I went topless in a public place tonight.  My Dh and I met my inlaws for a pizza tonight.  I was doing fine with some kind, encouraging words from DH.  Then my MIL said that she liked my hair and commented that it looks like a "dyke" haircut.  I was speechless.  First of all, I do not use that kind of language and second, what made her think that was even a nice thing to say to me regarding my hair.  Please keep in mind that I have been married to her son for 24 years and have ALWAYS had long  hair.  Some people are just rude.  Unbelievable.

Thanks for listening to me vent. (again!)

Charmain - thanks for sharing your photos.  You look fabulous!

I'm not sure what length your hair needs to be to be coloured but I thought we had to wait a bit so as not to damage the new growth. Maybe I'm wrong?

I'm 11 weeks PFC as of today and I'm not going to colour mine - I'm embracing my NATURAL colour.  LOL!  It's a total shock to my husband but I'm going with it.

Here are some photos taken today.

I think I've found the secret to wearing ULTRA short hair - BIG SUNGLASSES!!!

They won't even notice how short your hair is "who is that celebrity?"

    Check it out!

    Sideview below

I had my daughter trim my bushy neck hair -  it looked like furry caterpillars trying to crawl up my neck!

WARNING BIG forehead view ahead - lots of BRAIN in here!!

Last one - check out the eyebrow and eyelash growth!  I'm not wearing mascara!!!

    Happy hair growing to all!

I forgot to mention that today I went topless OUT IN PUBLIC!  It was kind of weird but I thought since I was going to radiation I should go topless - if anywhere that would be the most accepting place!  After that I picked up pizzas for the kids - topless again - and no one noticed!

Navy - the other day I was wearing a plaid shirt (with breast pockets), low shoes and no wig.  My husband called my "Pat" like the character from SNL.  I think maybe your MIL was trying to be funny and lighten the mood - no?

A BIG THANK YOU to you for posting photos of your hair growth.  It is soooo good to be with others with the same hair style!  I would post a photo too if I could figure out the process.

Marie nice picture of your hair growth.  I would like to do this too, had my husband attempt to take pictures last week, but he did not do any where near as good job as your pictures.

My upper eye lashes are starting to come in, and I on my left eye noticed one eye lash that is either gray or white of the entire lot... go figure.  Wish I could take it out, but many encouraged me not to.

MarieK - I'm not sure what PFC means actually, but I was just wondering when you say you are 11 weeks PFC does that mean 11 weeks from your last treatment?  I had my last treatment Feb. 10th and have hardly any hair at all.  Frown  You have a TON of hair already!  Lucky you!  Would you mind sharing when your last treatment date was?  Thanks so much and your hair is gorgeous!

NavyMom....My MIL was very rude to me too when she first saw me a couple of months ago  (as a matter of fact this was the first time that I had seen her since my diagnosis 14 months ago)  She said that me and my husband had the same haircut....like as if I did it like that on purpose. I always had long hair too before. She is just an uncaring, rude person anyway.

    Marie...Your hair looks great!

PFC means Past F'ing Chemo...the F can stand for freakin, fudging or the 'cuss' word...whatever you chose...I prefer the cuss word myself  lol

Here's another question that you ladies may have answered before, but here goes.....

I am about 7 months past final chemo and, although it is slow, I am pretty happy with my hair growth.  It seems to be coming in curly and I know that is normal.  But my question is...do the curls last or do they eventually straighten out?  My hair was poker straight before chemo, so I was just wondering if the curls are here to stay.

Doesn't PFC technically mean Post Final Chemo?  (And most here just substitute the F-ing? :)

Thanks for all the kind comments on my hair!

Today is day 2 of my slow entry into public without head coverings.

I went into my local Starbucks TOPLESS!  Mind you it was almost closing time but still I did it -  I had to - I needed my vanilla syrup to make lattes at home!

Mommaof2 - My last chemo date was Jan 19 but I have to admit my hair was sprouting before then - in mid December I think it was.  I could feel it coming in and there was peach fuzz for the longest time before real growth sprouted.

I found some Nioxin Shampoo & Conditioner at my local Winners (like TJ Max in the US) and I'm going to try that and see if it can boost the growth!

I'll let you know how it goes - better yet I'll do another photo shoot next month!

Thanks ccbaby.  You hit it on the head.

I am new to being a MIL(11 months) and I am trying to keep a nice relationship with my DIL.  I am not here to replace her own mother, but if she were to need something I would want her to be comfortable in asking me.  And I want her to think of me as a loving, giving person.  My own MIL is selfish and cold.  And MY FIL is the same way(at times even worse).  And they wonder why we are not "close"  Oh, I could go on and on but I won't.

Have a nice day everyone.  I will be on a little trip with 5 of my close gal pals.  Going to Florida tomorrow.  We had to cancel our trip last summer because of my DX and surgery/treatment.  So this is a Big Deal!  They are wonderful women who have been there for me.  We have been friends for 20+ years.  I am so grateful to have them in my life.

Marie - I think you look great!  You shouldn't worry about going out "topless" at all!  I hope my hair starts coming in soon.  I would like to get rid of my hats and wigs by this summer.  I think that is wishful thinking on my part though.

    Take care.

Mommaof2 - mine is coming in very slowly on top at the crown.  It's in (...or never really fell out fully) around the sides and the back. It's starting to fill in on top but not fast enough for me.  It's not coming in all at once for me.  How about you?  I wonder if there is a pattern for how it grows back after Taxotere?

Have any of you ladies tried the tablets 'BIOTIN' .  I have read on the net that some also use these for hair growth and even after chemo?

    Thanks you all, Charmaine :)

Just an "oldie" here popping in to answer a couple of questions (MY experience only!).

Some of you have mentioned hair growing nicely on the sides and back, but very slowly on the crown.  That was also my experience.  I did have taxotere, but don't know whether or not that's the reason for slow crown growth.  I'm still quite thin on the crown (compared to pre-BC) but I attribute that to Femara.

I did take biotin (10,000 mcg) following chemo, and continue to take it, but only 5,000 mcg now.

I purchased Nioxin (because my hair was taking "forever" to come in, but returned it after reading the directions which said it was not to be used for hair loss due to chemotherapy.

To encourage more growth on the crown, my pharmacist recommended a French hair growth system called Chronostim.  I used it for about 3 months and couldn't see any difference at all, so I stopped using it.

And finally, my hair pre-BC was stick straight.  It returned wavy and, almost two years out, is STILL wavy. Hurray!   But, as we've seen here, everyone's different.  And I still have hope for hrf that her hair WILL return!

    Hugs to all, Linda

Sugar77 - My hair is coming in SLOWLY!  AND (I don't know if this is typical or not) but there doesn't seem to be any color to it yet.  Maybe it will be (GULP!!) white? I can't bring myself to say the "G" word, so I'll stick with white.  If the lighting is bright, you can see my hair, but otherwise I still look bald.  One thing I like about going to get rads is the changing rooms have really, really bright lights and I can see my hair coming in a little better. Can you still see your skull or is it covered with new hair? I can see that the top will be the last to come in, so far, I have hardly any hair there. I think it's going to be quite awhile till it's back in fully.  One good thing for me is that I've always worn my hair pretty short, so hopefully I'll be back to a hairstyle I like sometime this year.

So.... I have never posted here... but had to share my encouraging hair tale! I finished chemo just over a year ago (Dec 2008) By May, I had what my teenage boys called a "mouse-fur cap." Very gray. (I was poker straight and naturally blonde before). As it grew past 1cm, it got REALLY curly! I thought that I was to have corkscrew ringlets!!!!!! So now.... I have not colored... just a couple of trims to get rid of that chemo hair... I have a thick head of STRAIGHT dark brown hair....maybe 2 inches, 2 1/2, and it finally looks like a "style".... not "grow-out." I was temped to color the gray out immediately, and am now glad that I waited.... the top layers on my crown are not gray.... it is underneath, along the hairline and mixed in through the middle. No longer mouse fur. I am glad that I did cut the chemo hair off. When I held it in my hand, i could see and feel how nasty it was. It also felt good to be "clean", and what came after was indeed, very shiny.

If there has been a positive spin, it is this: flying under the radar. No one recognizes me. That has been fun, and quite revealing!!!!!! Just the look on a face, when someone hears my voice, and makes the connection. Tee Hee!

    Hang in there girls....

daffodil45: thanks for the "hair tale." When you said that you cut the chemo hair off, at what stage did you do that? Some people have mentioned shaving the early growth a few weeks in to get rid of the chemo-laced hair. It does sound like a good idea but I'm not brave enough to do that. I finished chemo almost ten weeks ago and now have almost an inch of hair. If I shaved now, I would be back to scratch again.
