Oh, I have become afraid to use mascara because I don't want to stress the poor things out.  My unruly scraggly eyebrows are quickly becoming very precious to me.

I don't think I can think about this just yet.

I think I gracefully accepted the loss of my hair, all of it, while going through tx.  Even the loss of the eyebrows and eyelashes AFTER tx ended was grudgingly acknowledged as normal.  But for this insanity to continue long after chemo tx has ended....I will not accept this.  I WONT, I WONT, I WONT!   I am so loving my eyelashes right now.  Better than they ever were before chemo.  I refuse to let them depart yet again.

Springtime ~ You have your eyebrow kit already?  How's it working out?  I'm curious about the color.  Was the blond OK?

    Hi Sandy,

Yes I have the eye brow kit but I still have eyebrows at the moment (!!) so am just using my regular eye brow stuff.

But you're right, I should try it out why I still have some brows up there! Only one more Taxol to go on 11/10, then I could be browless by Thanksgiving or Christmas! I better get on the stick!

It's a nice kit though. The blonde color looks just right. Like they said, darker than one might imagine, but I think this will be perfect for me...

Sunshine, it's really an individual thing. It can be three times or more, but usually not more than two-three times. Your eyebrows and lashes are on short growth cycles, and when they all come in at once after chemo, they will all fall out at once (or nearly at once) when they hit the end of their cycle. Usually they're staggered so you don't notice it as much. It may take a few cycles to get them back into a staggered cycle.

Thanks NancyD  Guess I'm blessed I got to keep them all thru Chemo!

But I do agree with familyroks it is insane ...

    Nancy D,

THank you, the short cycle thing makes sense. I think now I get it. We have to hope/wait for the cycle to get "staggered" again...

I thought of selectively tweezing my brows to help get them on the staggered cycle sooner. But I ended up just letting them do their own thing. I couldn't bear to part with any single hair needlessly (or without a justifiable reason) after going without.

Hi.  Today is my one year anniversary of being diagnosed and I've never felt better.  Check out my website http://www.jillies.com/.  It offers really helpful info on getting through treatment and beyond.  We have beauty, fitness and nutrition advice as well as many hepful resources.  This is a warm and welcoming place that will help you do this with the most dignity possible.  There is a great section on wig selection and hair as well as how to tips on applying false eyelashes and false eyebrows.  Check it out and pass the word on!

I had a dream last night that my hair was back, and was about and inch or so all over my head.

The real question for me is  have any of the rest of you had your new short hair styled. Mine is growing in scraggly - but I can't figure out when to get it done. And since there is so little hair, do I go to my old (expensive) hair stylist or one of those (cheap) chain places?

I hadn't realized till I read enjoylife's post that even an inch of hair does keep you warmer than no hair at all. I will no longer complain about having so little hair anymore.

    Susan,

I had old hair that never fell out and was long and scraggly, (I never buzzed it) but hardly any, pathetic really, then stubbles started coming in. I just took sissors at home and cut off all the long so they are now the same as the stubble! ha!

You probably have more hair though. It is a good question!

Susan - If it were me, and I'm not yet ready to have scissors taken to my hair, I'd go to my old hair stylist.  They know you and I expect will know what best to do with the short hairs that you do have without too much trauma.  I don't think I could trust anyone else to my hard earned new hair growth.

I am starting chemo either next week or the next and scared crazy about losing my hair.  I try to tell myself that it is just temporary but JEEZ!!  My hairdresser actually (as a gift!) got me a human hair wig.  I meet with him this Tuesday and he is going to cut it my length and make sure the color is right so I am very lucky for that. I also bought a cheaper one (although not cheap) that is close too.  I know that will all help.  I just don't want to be bald.  I know I am crying to the choir here. I need a better attitude.  Hopefully I will get there.  Take care, Cristl

Cristi -- Your attitude is just fine; it's the cancer that sucks!!  You just feel what you feel and know that you are not alone.

    Cristi,

I think I was more freakd out about my hair coming out than chemo iteself! I think this whole journey would be a lot easier if you could just keep your HAIR!

I got a wig early, that helped (like you) and I also got some little soft caps to sleep in so my head wouldn't be cold. Friends got me tons of scarves and knitted caps.

As I went through time, I used everything. I started with soft lose caps because my head/hair hurt sort of when it was first coming out, and like for 2 weeks. Then I went to scarves under ball caps. Then I finally got used to my great wig, that I still wear and love. But, it did take some "getting used to". You have to get over the "wig hump"!!

You are not alone! Jeez is right!

Hi Christie, know exactly how you feel. It broke my heart when my hair started falling out. When I was diagnosed my hair was long, when the onc said I had to have chemo I had it cut to my shoulders to try and make the impact less traumatic. When most of my hair had fallen out I got my dh to shave the remains off. Although its not the same has having your own hair I had quite alot of fun wearing different wigs, various colours and styles. Cancer sucks and chemo was horrible but with the treatment it gives us a fighting chance. Good luck. Dawn.x

    Hi Cristi,

I am starting my chemo 11/7 also and feel all the same things you are. I keep telling my self it is just hair but my inner gut tells me different. I decided that when I first notice the hair starting to go I am going to have one of my daughters shave it off. That way if I blubber like a 2 year old I won't feel so bad! Even though I have know my hairdresser for several years it is just a little different than family. We will get through this and be stronger than before. I like to look at the cancer as a little detour in  my life that will eventually make me a better person. I can still complain that at the present that it sucks alot but it is only temporary. Keep me posted, we can compare notes. I will be thinking of you next Friday and say a liitle prayer for you.

Donutswife?  Just a side thought....my dd and dh helped to shear and later shave my head as it still hurt even sheared when it was falling out.  But later when I talked to my hairdresser for my first trim, she asked how my dd was doing with it all?  She said it was the most devastating thing she ever had to do, to shave her own mothers head.  I hadn't thought of that and still haven't had the thought to ask dd, but will be talking to her about it. I don't want to hurt dd more than I had already throughout this process.  Being 24 at the time, I'm sure there are things on her mind she didn't share, but will one day.  Good Luck to you ladies just starting through.

I have to say that once it's gone, it's much easier to accept.  Losing it is the absolute worst part of this trip I think...next to hearing those words, 'You have Breast Cancer.' :(

Thanks for the info, I guess I never thought of it that way. She is only 22 and has been very supportive through all of this. I guess I was just being selfish. Suppose I will dig into my options a little bit more.

I had a good friend go with me to the wig store where they shaved my head and trimmed the wig. Then we went out for a nice lunch...a bit of wine and a bit of whine.

Here's something for us all to share:

You know your hair is really growing back when: ______________ (fill in the blank).

If you don't mind, I'll start.

You know your hair is really growing back when it takes more than one swipe of the towel to dry your head after a shower.

I found that just cutting your hair short and letting it do it's thing was a better choice for me than shaving.  At least some hair around the ears and stuff with a scarf on seems to look a little better, but it's such a personal choice.

What really tries my patience are these insurance companies who claim that they cover cranial prostheses (wigs) but then tell you to use an "in network provider" but they can't tell you which if any medical equipment companies in their network to call - BC/BS is giving me referrals to wheelchair and respiratory therapy companies!  Just try to get reimbursed - you have to jump through hoops.

You know your hair is starting to grow back in when you look in the mirror and the overhead light shining on your head doesn't blind you!

Just wanted to say,the back of my head really started hurting when I tried to put my head on a pillow.I mixed up some emu oil and Palmers cocoa butter, smeared it on my hair and into my scalp. In about a half hour,it no longer hurt. I have also stopped washing my hair daily as I know it was getting drier each time.Has anyone else tried cream or oils?Jackie

    Good idea, Nancy D,

You know your hair is growing back when you color it and 2 weeks later you have gray roots.

You know your hair is growing back when you have to break out the hair dryer to get it more than towel dry.

It's about 3/4's to an inch long but no curl. I suppose I'd see curl by now if i was going to?
