I am laughing at the you know you have hair comments because they all ring so very true. I am so glad to not have a freezing cold head at night now. I love that it blows in the wind, et c.. I made my first haircut appt for this thursday as the back is getting long and I don't like that mullet lool LOL I need that to be trimmed up and leave the top I guess.

Can anyone give me some tips on how you spike the hair? What kind of gel do you use? I think I might have just enough hair now to give that a try. Finished my chemo in June. But my hair is growing sooooooooo slowly. It's only about an inch or so long. And it's poker straight on the top, a little wavier in the back.
Thanks! Sue K.

Another Bostonian here.
I had my last chemo on Oct. 6 (TCH) and am still losing hair. I had to delay the last chemo by one week and I think my hair got confused and started growing. Now the little hairlets are coming out. But some are staying put, I hope for good!
I know some people said that it was so much quicker getting out of the house in the morning with no hair. But not for me. I now spend more time putting on more makeup and putting on wigs and tying scarves. Before, I just used to wash my hair and go-- no styling or even brushing.
Do most of you have pierced ears? I never bothered with earrings as my hair always coveregd my ears. Now I am thinking I should get my ears pierced so as to detract from what will be super short hair.

Yes, two actually in each ear. Long story, my elder sister talked me into years ago Anyway, I hadn't worn earrings in a long time (years) till I lost my hair. It was nice to have them to wear to take away from that 'bald' face and head I thought.
Also, I didn't do a wig, just a scarf, or hat. In michigan we have cold winters too, and my chemo was dec-feb, so a hat wasn't too out of place.

Joia - I have pierced ears. Many friends and co-workers said my large hoops and dangling earrings made my short post chemo hair "look chic" - I took it as a compliment and still wear hoops.
I had my first post chemo hair cut last week. It was anxiety producing - I was a little scissor shy since my last "hair cut" dut to chemo!

I wear the biggest hoops I can find, lotsa eye makeup and some lipstick. I thought I would post a picture of Natilie Portman's shaved head for proof beauty is not all in the hair..http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m236/kickinitup/?action=view¤t=portman.jpg0

I tried posting a picture of Natalie Portman's shaved head for inspiration but It didnt post. I will try again. Beauty isn't all about the hair. I like her makeup I think the idea is to play up the eyes and cheekbones.

She's so pretty, but geepers, she has hair growing in, and man, if my face looked that good during tx, I'd have gone completely bald without a problem. She's got the smoothest, clearest skin.
On the other hand, this 50 years couldn't have covered the problems with 6 layers of makeup while I was on chemo. We won't even mention the break outs, and lack of eyebrows and eyelashes ( or nearly lack of which seemed even worse some days

Hello everyone.....Just wanted to share that three month are up since my eyebrows and lashes grew back in. And just like I was told that they fall out every three month.....it happened. My brows are gone but from the side I can see the new ones growing in. My lashes are half out again and the ones that look loose, come out when I gently tug at them.
I didn't want to believe it, but it does happen. I don't know why, but I sure hope this doesn't continue forever!

What a bite! Did you have one of the T's for chemo also? I only had A/C, so maybe that's the difference? so sorry it's still happening

Yup, I had Taxatere and Cytoxin. Dang! A friend of mine has been 2 years out and it happens to her as well....YET!0
-
Geeperes....so sorry about that! Has to be the 'T' then. I didn't even lose all mine (eyes stuff). I'd never heard of this happening till this thread. Must not be something they forewarn you about either I suppose. ONe more nasty 'surprise'! It's your present....NOT

I'm on day 14 after my first chemo and my head is sore and my hair is falling out when i run my fingers thru it or brush it,not a lot,but enough to know that it won't be long b4 i have to have dh cut it off. This hair loss freaks me out more than losing my boobs did.
I've always had a very thick, baby fine head of hair, and even though i'm 70 it's still not all grey yet. It's always been my crowning glory, and i always get compliments on it.To see it falling out is devasting, knowing that i'm going to lose it all.
The other thing i've been getting is those stupid whiteheads, now i havn't had those since my 20's,so why now?? Am i going to enter puberty again?? LOL,LOL
I have my 2nd round next thursday the 13th,so we'll see what happens then.

Sue - I'm with you with your question on the gel thing. I also finished in June, so we probably have the same amount of hair. I was trying to play with gel this morning, but I have absolutely no clue about what I'm doing. Anyone else have previous gel experience they can share?
Artsee - I'm so sorry about the brows and lashes! I'm 4.5 months out now and so far so good - I hope they stick.
Kathi - I also had the horrible whiteheads after my first treatment. I could have given any 14 year old boy in the state a run for his money. And they don't make phisoHex anymore, LOL! Try a salicylic acid wash - after some trial and error, I used Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash - it's in an orange and clear tube. It really worked and didn't dry out my skin too much - I even used it on my scalp once the hair fell out. And you're not alone - I think for most of us the loss of hair is more traumatic than the loss of boobs. Makes no sense when you think about it, but it's really true.

As many say, losing our hair makes it obvious we are in treatment, whether people know or not, it brings attention to us. And yes, it was more traumatic for me also. Till it was gone and I loved not having to wash it every morning to leave. Although, I'm not a hat/wig person either, so that wasn't fun. I did finally set on small hat and scarves and that served while the wigs sat in their chambers collecting time.

Hi all, I'm going to be having chemo soon, 4 rounds of TC. I know my head will get cold at night as I like to sleep with my window open. Do any of you know of a sleep cap that didn't come off during the night??
Mary

Mary, any old thang will do. You will be in 'chemopause' so the hot flashes will make you want to tear all the bedclothes off anyway. I was grateful that it was winter when I was doing chemo..my bedroom temp was icy which helped! I NEVER wore anything on my head at night.

AMen to cold bedrooms! Even now, months after, I'm still enjoying the windows open! And I just used some old winter caps that were really light wear I found. They do have sleep caps online for Cancer patients....Most of the places that sell wigs and scarves and such have them I'm sure.

I bought a couple of cotton caps/turban-ish things at the hospital store where they sell wigs etc. I needed to wear them at night because I hated the way my head felt against the pillow -- the remaining prickles hurt and my bald head kept slipping off. I was in chemopause (no period for several months) but I never got the really bad nighttime hot flashes, so maybe you'll be lucky.

Mary, I've found that a beanie type cap stays put best on my head overnight. They have some lightweight ones on the TLC and Headcovers websites that work pretty well. Like Lorena, I don't like to sleep bald because I have some stubble and it hurts when I move around on the pillow.

I lost mine just before Christmas in Michigan and believe me, it was cold last year. No hair on the body, then the hot flash would hit and I'd peel off layers, then get that sudden chill over your entire body, so you cover up, only to start another flash! UGH! And yes, the head cover came off and was slipped under the pillow to soon return. You will get through this, and hopefully with more humor than tears. Humor helps immensely!

I leave the blankets extra-long when I make the bed. Then, when I start feeling chilly (my ears get the coldest), I just pull the blankets up over my head and make a hole for my nose to stick out. Looks charming, I know; but it really helps. I, too, like to keep the bedroom cool because of flashes. I'm getting them again, now that I'm on an AI; but for me they aren't as frequent or as severe as they were with natural menopause.

I'm in Raleigh NC (and was raised in the North East) but my head feels really cold at night. I wear cottony caps that I got at the local wig place. When it's really cold I find I need to pull it down nearly over my eyes in front and as far down my neck as it will reach!
I think it is good I am not in Michigan like WishIWere!!!

Hi,
I've been hot most of my life but usually need my head covered in the house now that the weather is cool/cold. I have a selection of scarves and caps but my favorite is my Buff. I've posted this before but there seem to be some newcomers and I don't want to keep it's comfort to myself so please excuse any repeat info.
The Buff is a 20 inch long stretchy tube - seamless and no hems or elastic to irritate. The elastic on my night cap always began to dig in after a while and had to come off. I slide one end over my head and tuck the other end under the back. It can be worn many ways but that's easiest for inside the house. I had a uv buff all summer. It's been washed and worn many times and still maintains its' shape.
Besides being comfortable, it's easy to pull off for a hot flash and then slip back on for the chills.
I bought my first buff at the Vermont Country Store but I haven't seen them on their website. Here is a website I found- www.buffwear.com I haven't purchased from it. I did buy from www.planetbuff.com Very good, quick service.
I have seen videos available on buff websites on how to wear a buff - see link How to Wear a Buff and when I Googled Buff, there's a youtube video too.
Hope this helps until our hair is back.

My chemo pause seems to have resided slightly since I finished it 2 months ago. I am down from 4 soaking sweats a night to 1 or 2. But man when those things hit it sucks. I have been increasing my exercise regime I think that is helping. Also, I find wearing a big warm scarf with a lighter or sleeve less jacket is a good solution to colder weather. Its easy to take the scarf on and off when the flash hits. I think my big heavy sweater and turtle neck days are over...

thought I would share my latest hair update, I am currently 7 weeks out from chemo and this is what my hair looks like, same color and all...0

Roflmao! Too funny! Thanks for that chuckle!
Yes, you're big sweater days are over, especially anything that pulls over! That or you'll need a really short hair cut in this guys style, b/c that what's your hair will look like after removing said sweater in the winter with static! Glad yours are subsiding....Mine are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack with vengeance!
