sandym - I had straight hair - would get frizzy in humidity but never curly! I always had very thick hair. I do love the curls and hope they will hang around for awhile.

Yes, the hair does come back. Everybody hang in there!

hopefullady - sorry to disappoint you, but I was still shaving some stubble on my otherwise bald head when I was close to finishing chemo. What didn't fall out during treatment, fell out after treatment ended. That hair was also the last to grow back. Oh yeah, and the private-parts hair didn't fully fall out till after chemo too.

There's no definites with this mess - why can't we catch any breaks at all!!!

Thanks everyone.  Just in case, I guess I will not become too attached to that remaining hair.

Nice if it stayed, but I won't count on it.  I don't understand why it's so different for everyone.

    All,

SandyM helped me find the "eyebrow kit" on the web site she mentioned - I ordered to day so I will not be "brow-less"!

Apparently Sandy was advised to get a color lighter than you think you are. I went with blonde, but then I am typically blonde when I have hair, that is!

Hi Artsee - good to hear from you again! If you go to page 4 of this thread there are directions on how to post pictures.

I never really lost all of my hair with chemo. I always had fuzzy, thin hair on top of my head. A habit that I developed was rubbing that fuzzy hair at night while I was trying to go to sleep. It was some reassurance that I still had some hair! After chemo and when my new hair was coming in I did the same thing because I loved the soft feeling. My DH teases that the reason my hair is curly and thick is that I massaged my hair follicles every night! Now my DH is the one that rubs my hair - he loves the soft curls!

    Take care

I don't think anyone loses all their hair with chemo. I think we all panic and shave it down. I do wish somedays I left the handful of hairs I had left... The hairs that I shaved and didnt fall out sat there in hibernation till chemo ended...Now I cheer them on every day while they are trying to make a comeback...Winter is settling in here in the North East and my Head is COLD DEMMIT!!!

Shelly, I lost all my hair, except for ONE hair which I regarded as my 'lucky hair' or Hairbinger (rather that harbinger). I actually had a shiny scalp. That didn't last all that long..maybe few weeks..and then the baby fluff started. I'm 4 weeks post chemo today, and hoping against hope that the worst is not AHEAD of me ie eyebrows (completely) gone and more eyelash loss. I hate filling in the brows..that is the worst thing for me.

It's so weird how people lose it differently, but the time table to start losing is right on.  I kept ONE bang hair (about one inch long when the rest started growing again. Dd had missed it while shaving my head with dh so I left it alone. Like Kerry, figured it worth the time, to watch it.  It only felt out when the rest about 1/2 long  Weird.  I lost ALL my pubics, but am losing them again, I think (hope b/c of arimidex), and the hair on my legs are so thin I've not messed with them.  Very, very few, and like 4 on each knee stayed during chemo.  Arms, I really don't remember, but sure it thinned. The brows got even thinner than than they were from low thryoid before dx that I didn't know about.  They are looking better now than pre-bc due to thyroxine. Lashes, never lost them completely, just thinned. But yes.  the head was shiny new during the middle of chemo. Then between the 3rd and last A/C it stated to grow fuzz already.  Just before the 4th.

Hair, weird stuff to miss, but you always want it back.

Here's my hair after 5 months of no chemo. The length is not too bad except the bangs are curlier and don't seem to want to grow at the same rate as the rest. There is HAIR after chemo.

Artsee - your hair is looking great! My bangs are not growing as fast as the other hair. Back and top are the thickest - sides are finer. I didn't lose all the hair on the sides - so I think it may be finer because it is still damaged from chemo.

I remember a few months ago how we were begging for our hair to grow back - now we are reassured that it does.

For all you gals who are waiting for your hair to come back - hang in there - it will come back!

Artsee ~ great hair. Love the amount, the  color and the curls. I'm 4 months out but I can't imagine I'll have half that much in a month. At least I can tell mine is growing because I colored it and now I have roots!  Never was so happy to see roots.

I am so jealous of everyones hair growth, mine is growing but it sticks straight up.I am 5 months out and it is about 2 in long, but standing on edge. I can mouse it down until it looks greasy, but it will stand straight back up in an hour or so. I look like a giant Chia Head, I knew I would get the cute curls that everyone else got but I thought that it might stay down on my head. It is coming in thick and wild, just like it went out.

All of you ladies look amazing, anytime you are having a bad hair day think of the Chia Lady Cry

Aw, Diana, you're not a chia head.  Even if you are, we love you anyway.  I was very worried mine would grow straight up, like an infamous photo I've seen of me during childhood.  It did start out that way, but then it flattened down and is even flatter now than I would like. (I know, be careful what I wish for...)  I do think it's a bit thinner than "normal", probably because of Arimidex.

Artsee, those curls are great!  (Assuming you want them.)  You did color it, right?  I know you were talking about that.  How else could you get that wonderful blonde, when some of us are dealing with house-mouse?

And, ShellyJo, you said this:  "I don't think anyone loses all their hair with chemo. I think we all panic and shave it down."   Sorry, but that's not true for everyone.

While it is true that not everyone loses all her hair, it is true that I lost all of mine.  I know because I did not shave my head.  I decided to leave it alone, to see what would happen.  As it came out (beginning around day 14 of my first round of Taxotere/Cytoxan), I trimmed it.  So, it went from a chin-length bob to earlobe-length to maybe 1-1/2 inches long.  Then I left it that length.

By the end of my 3rd round of TC, I had a thin, light fringe of hair around the sides.  The front, top, and crown of my head were completely bald.

By the end of my 4th round of TC, it was all gone except for a very few scraggly surviving hairs around the sides.  My whole head was basically shiny-bald.  Those few scraggly survivors fell out as I slowly developed the light, colorless fuzz of post-chemo re-growth, 6 weeks or so after my last tx.

Because I'd never shaved my head, it was easy to see what remained from my pre-chemo hair.  For me, by the end of 4 rounds of TC, there wasn't any.   Everyone's situation is different, though.

[Edited:  I deledted the drawings of male-pattern baldness and edited my post, because I didn't want anyone else to misunderstand (like Artsee apparently has) and think I'm a guy.  That would be very bad news to my dh, to whom I've been happily married for 21 years.]

Otter........I hope you aren't trying to tell us you're a man or something.Yell I agree, I lost ALL the hair and not a one was left. I clipped them down to 1/8 in., thinking maybe they would hold on without tugging but I was wrong. I colored the hair twice so far. And yes, I love the curls. They aren't real tight, just a great wave and big curl which I'm loving. My hair was straight as sticks and had to always use a curling iron. I haven't used one yet.

My new hair always laid very close to my head. It's just the last couple of weeks that it's taking some upward movement. I wanted it to 'get off' the scalp so it would seem a little longer.

Good luck guys, Throw some color on it and then you'll really see that it's growing in case you have doubts.

WOW you do have alot of hair at 5 months out.  I am 7 months out and I swear I do not have as much as you.  The length varies all over my head, the front taking the longest to grow in.  It is very wavy, when wet I can say it is about 2 inches long on average.  I want to get a trim in a few weeks time. Just to shape it up a bit.  I have learned to use styling products to control it though as it will stick straight up at the crown if I don't.  I have been told my hair looks nice and that I look chic by people that don't know the history behind it.  That makes me feel good.

    This gives me hope!!!

Right now I think I am looking more like one of Otter's "male pattern baldness" images. Well, c'mon, even those are showing more hair than I have now!!!

Thanks guys......I gotta tell you.....The eyebrows are falling out again. My brow pencil is full off them. I'm holding my breath for the lashes. It seems every-things on "schedule" like we've been told. Every three month the stuff starts to go south. GRRRRR!!!! Well as long as the hair on the head stays put I'll tolerate it.

Yorkster....Love your avatar. Looks just like my little "Lucy".

Ladies?  What type of Chemo did you get that you continue to lose your hair after being with treatments?  Oh my! I can't imagine!  I had A/C and didn't have that problem.  Is it the taxanes that cause that to happen?  I'm so sorry you are experiencing this AFTER chemo!  UGH!!!!!!!!

Damn...now I'm depressed.  Losing the hair sucked beyond all belieft but the eyebrows and eyelashes are what made me look "ill".  This will seriously pi$$ me off to no end if this happens.  Can't we just get past this crap?

Kind of makes me feel dumb for even bothering to pluck these buggers.

Adrienne -- I am afraid that all this talk is going to cause my eyebrows to become discouraged and fall out. No offense to all the women who have actually been through this and know what they're talking about, but -- Adrienne? YOU AND I ARE NOT RELINQUISHING THE EYEBROWS AND THE EYELASHES AGAIN.  Huh-uh. No way.  It just is not going to happen.  Do you hear me sister? We are hanging on to them. I will cheerfully offer my left ovary to the goddesses of the cancer and throw the right one in for good measure but THE EYEBROWS ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE. THE EYEBROWS STAY.

My eyebrows have stayed fairly intact after my adjuvant chemo (totally lost them during neoadjuvant chemo...but only at the end). The one thing I noticed was new hairs didn't come in so I wasn't plucking them.

However, my eyelashes have completely gone again. Thankfully, I've never played them up much the last few years. Somewhere back when I hit menopause, they thinned and became so much less than they used to be. So I developed a make-up routine that played up othe aspects of my eyes. I suppose if I ever need them again, i can resort to falsies.

It's 9-1/2 weeks post chemo, and my hair has finally filled in in the spots that were stubbornly holding out. Still very short there, compared to the rest of my head, but at least I can see I will have enough hair at the front of my head to have bangs again. I'm about where I was when I started my adjuvant chemo in August ( see photos on page 7), but more uneven. Some hairs are longer, some are shorter. Go figure.
