Karin - I've noticed in the last week that I have more licks to my cow...hahaha..cowlicks.  I'm 12 weeks post chemo and have more like soft wisps and some waves.  I'm actually thinking about going for a trim tomorrow because of the thicker neck hair.  Wondering if I should request a facial something to take care of the face fuzz.  I may bitch but I really can't complain.  Ok..I can, because I put on make up each day (which I never did before) and notice things I've never noticed before.  Was that there before?  Is it because before I didn't care or is it new?  Oh boy...I need to get off the pity box

Why get off the pity box? I think I've been waiting all my life to get on it...I'm going to get my money's worth! It was really warm and summery here today and when I was driving home from work I just had to get the wig off. (I work out in the country) and when I got to town I remembered that I had to stop and get meat from a little butchery. I couldn't be bothered putting the wig back on so I just went in and did the biz. The butcher carried my two bags out to my car!!! It was so cool! I haven't played the cancer-card for so long!  My hair is darkish male-pattern baldness undergrowth , about 1/2 inch long, with a mid-storey of white baby hair maybe 3/4 ", and then a fair sprinkling of longer all-directions hairs through it all. No wonder he wanted to carry my bagsKiss It all feels a bit like thin cat hair. My eyebrows..or should I say, the place my eyebrows used to be, frightens me in the mirror and I can't tell you anything about my lashes. I forget what they even used to look like before; I favour the almost-goth eyeliner look these days.  Re walking to feel better: yep! do it! OMG you have never met a less motivated cancer-girl than I am, but I just had to get moving. I even got a dog (after 17 years without one) so I would actually leave the house. My family of origin is, thankfully, THE most responsible pet-owning family around so the dog must get walked twice daily. My legs are like lead, but my mind and lungs LOVE the exercise. XX

    Carol and Cristi,

Starting chemo (the anxiety of it) and the thought of loosing my hair were both the hardest things for me. I think I'd rather have surgery!

The chemo, once you are actually doing it, is not as scarey as thinking about it. Don't be quiet and ask a lot of questions. Tell everyone it's your first time. I bet you will get kindness!

Hair falling out was the next trauma, but you are not alone,  -- just get prepared with something! Mine started coming out by the handfulls on the third day after my second treatment. It's a shock, but then, I guess, like the chemo, you get used to it somehow.

Stick to these boards! you are not alone!

    Hi All,

Had my first tx on 11/5/08 (Taxotere, Carboplatin & Herceptin). It's only been 7 days but my head it itchy and there seem to be little scabs if I run my fingers through my hair.  The hair is not yet falling out, but I'm wondering if this signals the beginning?  My onc. thought it would be about 16 days after the first treatment before hair issues began.  Geeze is this the one and only time in my life that I am an early bloomer????

My hair didn't get curly until it was almost an inch long. Then it just sort of started to stand up from my scalp and started to bend. It's such a nice loopy curl and it came back thicker. Now it's about 3 inches but seems shorter because I cant straighten them yet.

On the other hand, like Otter, my brows are gone for the second time now. I have half of the lashes left but I can tell they are getting weak because they tend to stand in different directions. One little tug and out they come.

Ah, the gift that keeps on giving and giving..........................Tongue out

    Hugs, Artsee

It is so good to have followed folks through this whole cycle. I finished chemo just about the same time as Otter and guess what? Just yesterday I noticed the eyebrows/lashes were getting a little thin again and broke out the eyebrow powder! My head hair is salt and pepper and very curly. Other people say complementary things, but I'm not so crazy about it. But it is hair.

I think my leg and arm hair is thicker than before chemo, which is kind of annoying. And I still have some facial fuzz, but it is light enough that I'm just going to wait for it to fall out.

    Eyebrows and Eyelashes

I am now 15 weeks to the day since my last chemo. I NEVER did loss all my eyebrows. They first thinned out at the insides. I used powder to fill in. By the time the outside started to thin the inside had grown back.

As for the eyelashes they came out in cycles so I never went lash less. I think it was somewhere between weeks 5-8 that they started to fall out about 3-6 each eye every weekend. By the time the next week rolled around the ones that left before had already grown back.

If I start to loss them for a second time I hope they go and come like they did before.

Bottle blond ? or natural........... I guess I can only speak for the 'menepausal' lady's who probably have salt and pepper compared to blond.(natural ) It seems I came back S+P but then I deserved every one of them being 59.:)  Of course they didn't stay that way long. I'm back to my (natural) blond. It is natural...I've been that most of my life right?

Springtime - the chin hairs were the first to grow back on my head. There is no justice.

Sunshine - the parts of my hair with color did grow back darker than it was before.

Made an appointment for next Saturday to go to my old hair stylest when I started noticing that the longish hairs at the nape of my neck were rapidly turning into a mullet.

Next thought is whether or not to have them color it too - the hair might be too thin - I don't want the scalp to show through that much.

Three months after last chemo and I'm noticing some brown hair coming in! (Up to know it's been mostly silver, then silver and charcoal, then mostly charcoal...and now brown!)

There is hope?  DH keeps commenting on my black hair, which of course I notice against the "non-color" that he calls grey!  I'm a brunette and would prefer brunette return.  I had a "trim" today which just evened things up...she said she also thinks its a non-color.  I'll take her opinion over DH ;)...well because I want to.

13 weeks post chemo today and I don't think I have any brown yet but damned if I ain't watching those brows and lashes so very closely.  So far so good.  Need to create a clear duct tape.

    Rock...I love your avatar.

     Hey chickys

My eyebrows just started coming in like gangbusters very Groucho Markesque. I think I won't pluck them and wait and see if they fall out again. Bottom lashes were MIA last few weeks, It wasnt so much an issue because It made eyeliner glide on perfectly. But now the top lashes are saying a fond farewell..I have to laugh its all so crazy. I booked a facial for friday for the first time since spring so I am looking forward to that, She will want to wax my unibrow I will slap her hand and say MINE!! lol Been rubbing the ostrich oil into my scalp  my hair is very soft and shiny now albiet still standing up but thats ok it feels good to rub my head at least. Even my nine year old commented on how its growing in really well at this point. Although he did inform me that I must wear a wig in public because I look like a boy and that wont do...out of the mouths of babes.

Haha Yes, that was Posted by me originally I found it in some old mail that a friend sent me He was trying to make me smile and it worked, SO I figured I would pass it forward and make others grin..lol Uncanny how that is exactly what the hair looks like when it comes in. I think that is the same expression we all have when the doctors tell us " Yes, this is a cancer"  "SAY WHAT~!!!"

Sunshine...I colored my hair when it was 1 inch long. Couldn't take the Yukie color. Anyway I wanted to be in control this time. So I've done it 3 times and my hair is now 3 inches long.

I use double peroxide with the blond color and it looks good. I do always use a conditioner as well. One of the gals at my salon used a flat iron on me yesterday.(me...that always had hair straighter than a toothpick) I finally could spike it out where I wanted it to be,YEAH!

    Good Luck,Artsee

I have a quick question ladies.  I am over a year out of chemo,,,,,,,,and I finished my herceptin May of this year. ...,my hair did not change one bit.  Same color and still fine.  It actually has come back even way thinner than it used to be,,,,,,especially on the top.  It sucks.  Has anyone else experienced that?  I keep thinking it will fill in more,,,,,,,but I dont see much advancement in that dept.  Sucks when you can see your scalp. I have been taking Biotin because they say that helps.  lol   I go to the see the onc in Dec and she is going to run some thyroid tests.  Been bloated, back ache, having a really hard time losing weight, tired and the hair thing too.  Did anyone experience this kind of stuff after chemo and all?  Can chemo kind of mess up your thyroid?  Thanx ladies....................

Cinrae...Start using Nioxin. Shampoo, Scalp Therapy and the "rejuvenating serum" which is the most important part. People can't believe how thick my hair has come back. It has. I've been using it faithfully since the beginning of fall out. I'm a hairdresser and truly believe it works.

    Good luck, Artsee

I am suppose to start losing my hair next week and am pertrified.  I got 3 inches cut off today at lunch hoping this might help with the emotional side of things.  I have a beautiful wig my hairdresser ordered, paid for and has styled waiting for me... but still!!!!  Scary!  I have already bought the Nioxin products.  Did you start using them after your hair fell out???  I have 12 weeks of weekly treatments.  Two down, 10 to go

Artsee,,,,,,,,,,I was using the Nioxin shampoo and scalp therapy,,,,,but didnt get the rejuvenating serum.  Do you think that that is the most important to use?  I am not sure if it actually worked for me or not,,,,or it was just coming in anyways.  But like I had said,,,it is sure thin on the top.  Well thin all over,,,,,,,,,,,,not like it used to be,,,,,,,but more so on the top.  Thank you for the suggestion.

Hi everyone.  I have a few questions about hair... maybe someone can help???  I just finished chemo (TCH) Oct.14.  I never shaved my head down to the scalp, I used an "at home" trimmer and buzzed it all one lenth (about an inch long).  I never lost all my hair during chemo.  Now my hair is really starting to "fill in" and I have quite a bit of hair.  My question is should I just keep letting it grow?  Or should I buzz it down to the scalp?  Is the hair that I have worth saving or is it dead?

I bought a Nioxin kit.  It has cleanser, therapy and scalp treatment.  When should I start using it?

ShellyJo- LOL you're comments about the ostrich pic that Otter posted made me laugh so hard.  Yet, they are so true.  So what does Ostrich oil do for your hair/scalp?  Where can you get it?

Hey Artese, Have you researched the Nioxin shampoo? I am shy of it because I am paranoid of more chemicals? Is it natural? Everyone seems to boost about it.

Pam I bought the Emu oil at Vitamin Shoppe, It was 20 dollars for 4 ozs. I bought it orignally for radition and scars but I started using mederma for the scars and that seems to be working. Not sure yet what I am going to use for radiation which I start next week. I figure I will ask the staff there what they recommend. But my gf was using the emu oil for dry scalp a couple years ago and she loved it so I started rubbing it in to my nubs and it makes it feel very soft and supple..lol

My hair is growing in very dark now and thickening up from the roots, I would guess one more week till solid coverage. My esthesian said Its very "G. I. Jane ish"   I have definite hair outline all around my head. can't wait to go topless!!

I really should post a pic of my current "look" -- not that I chose this look voluntarily, I'm 6 months post chemo and haven't done a thing except scrunch with product every day to control the frizzies.  My hair was always thick, kind of wavy-curly but never tight curls like I have now.  I'm visiting my parents this weekend -- last night I told my mom that I feel sort of like a chia pet.  She replied that it looks a little bit like Harpo Marx. Surprised

I'm going to a wedding tonight so I should have some photos to post soon.

BTW I did use the Nioxin but I have no idea if it contributed to my extremely thick hair growth.  To be honest I think I just have a very large number of hair follicles compared to the average person.  It was nice to feel like I was doing something proactive, though!

Nioxin has a LOT of natural ingredients in it, but there are a few very long words listed as well and To be honest I have no clue what they are. When I have some time I'll have to Google" them. I started using it during my whole chemo treatment. In the morning and once at night. All I know is that my hair was never this thick. I almost want to get in there with a thinning shear.....but I'm keeping my hands off and am going to embrace what I've never had for a while yet.

The 'Rejuvinating Serum' is what's MOST important. It brings the blood to the surface and encourages the growth.

Cindy, the answer to you thyroid and chemo question, not sure. BUT thyroid can mess up your hair in regards to thinning.  In fact its one of the signs of thyroid problems where the eyebrows are thinning on the outer 1/3.  I've noticed since doing arimidex that my hair is thinner and have lost the hair 'down there' so to speak nicely   Not completely, but most of it.  Finally got rid of it b/c I was tired of it looking so scraggley. Hoping it grows back in nicely and not so sporadic as it was.  I'm wondering if some of the losses of eyebrows and lashes you ladies have AFTER chemo is from the Ai's also and not just chemo induced?

Are some of you losing your eye hair doing so after going on Ai's?

After 2 years on Tamoxifin my hair is getting thinner and thinner, I can see my scalp especially on the top of my head. Could this be a thyroid problem?
