Hair Hair Hair - Another question

I find our reactions to compliments about our hair, wigs, or just how we look most interesting. I think most of the time people are being truly sincere so comments, compliments don't bother me in the least. I was told back when I was 16 that I looked better with short hair and should always keep it short. The truth is that your features cannot hide behind short hair; for some of us, we really do look more "open" and some people translate that to beauty.
I find it easier to accept the compliments in the spirit with which they were intended, same as we do here with each other's comments.

Being fit and strong can only help you through this...
I'm reminded of the phrase from the movie, "Why I wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy" when the main character was in the chemo suite looking at a fashion magazine ad for shampoo.
"... hair porn..."
I understand completely. Since finishing chemo nearly three months ago, I have a couple of "short hairstyle" magazines that I've been perusing, trying to decide my next "look". "Hair porn" about covers it. What I wouldn't do for enough hair to style.

Hair porn? Hee, hee. I have 12 hair magazines right now. I cut out pictures of nice hair cuts etc and paste them in my journal. Definitely into the hair porn.

ksmatthews, it made me sad that you were crying about your hair, but YAY for liking your new hair cut and style and YAY for how great it looks! now all is well. i'm so happy for you.
missy, your hair is adorable. 14 months PFC? that's seems sooooo long away for me, but if my hair is as cute as yours when i'm 14 months PFC, then i can wait!

I've stopped looking at all the women's magazines I subscribe to.
Ads for shampoo, conditioner, straightener, de-frizzer, body-builders, texture-builders, hair color. Gee, I don't have hair.
Ads for mascara that lengthen, thicken, curl your lashes. Golly, I don't have lashes.
Ads for shaving cream, razors just for women, razors with conditioner. Wow, I don't have hair there either.
Ads for cute spring clothes. Sorry, I've gained 15 pounds since I started chemo and look like a sausage.
Articles about ways to save time cleaning your house, ways to "green-clean." Most days, I don't have the energy to pick up a sock.
Articles about yoga, exercises with rubber bands, exercises with balls. Nope, it's all I can do to walk to the bathroom.
Recipes to cook in 30 minutes, 15 minutes, recipes for slow cookers. Sorry, if it isn't bland and white, I can't stomach it.
Articles about ways to improve your sex life. C'mon, you gotta be kidding!
Do they publish a magazine for bald, sick, fat, tired women with damaged boobs?

WaveWhisperer-I totally agree! Everywhere you look there are things we can't use/enjoy........ I laughed at my friend who said they took too much off her hair when cut.......I couldn't believe she was complaining to me....I don't have any hair-and I laughed as she apologized......I look at what people complain about on Facebook and I just think "really?????". Wish I had hair...energy and could be myself again....for the time being just riding the wave and going day to day.....we will all read those magazines again someday.....

I figure I can always buy shoes! LOL
0 -
onvacation don't do it. I have these lovely booties my husband bought me the month I started chemo. My feet swelled so I couldn't wear them. It's now over a year PFC and my feet still can't fit in them.
But at least my hair came back. 0 -
Oh wow - thanks Lago - didn't even think of that!
0 -
Onvacation, that is what I say too.
I did have some swelling during taxotere, but it was temporary. I also got some really cute flat sandals that would fit even swollen feet. I was never much of a shopper, but I absolutely love shoes to the point of sickness, so buying shoes can cheer me at the worst of times. During the winter when I was in taxotere hell, I bought myself a really cute coat as well. 0 -
Ah, retail therapy is soooo good!

I did it! Went topless in public for the first time. Went out to lunch with 2 friends and to get a pedi afterwards. I took a ball cap to wear but my friends convinced me to ditch it. What a great feeling!

Congratulations auntienance. I can't wait to go topless!

Hello lovely ladies. Love the pics. I am now 12 weeks PFC and my hair is really starting to grow. I look like GI Jane but have now been going topless this week for the first time. Still get stares from people but not caring any more. So I guess you can say I am "over it" Was so hard at first to lose it. Being topless is so liberating though. I feel free. A few women have approached me in public saying that they admire my strength. Then they confess they too are a cancer survivor or currently undergoing treatment and the conversation always ends in a hug and words of encouragement from both sides.

Tisthyme - your hair is coming in so nicely!!!
0 -
Thank you, LuvRVing. I won't complain, that is for sure. It is just so nice to be without a wig and to feel the wind in my super short do. I love it!!
0 -
Yes, it does feel good! And the wind doesn't whip your short do into your face!!!
0 -
Your hair looks wonderful!

Looks great tisthyme. I am SO jealous!

Yay for going topless auntynance... you look great tisthyme..
Stopped in at work topless for the first time today.. Felt good to get that over with.. then on the way home I opened my car windows and let the wind "play" with my hair... When I got home I did not have a hair out of place
.. Felt great to feel the air on my hair, and since we have sun here today (finally) I thought some vitamin D would probably be good for my scalp0 -
LuvRVing, Haha! That is right! It definitely does not whip me in the face. That will be some time yet, if ever. I think I will keep it shortish, although not this short.
Thanks, onvacation.
carolinames, Thank you! You are about 6 weeks PFC, Are you getting close to going topless?
Ossa, I bet it was such a relief to get the work thing outta the way. I have yet to go to my regular grocer, but my excuse is that I go to rads daily now and stop by a store in that part of town instead. It has a better selection there to boot. I have excuses aplenty. Your drive home sounds lovely, and not a hair out of place. Ha! I surely understand that.

I am continually gob-smacked by how many women have "come forward" when they see my short-short hair. So many of us are out there! I'm stunned.
0 -
yaya so sorry I made you cry. I think that was my first meltdown over my hair. I was just so discouraged when I really should have been thankful that at least I am alive and have hair. But I am so loving my new cut!
tysthyme looks great!

Tisthyme-your hair looks so cute! I just had Taxol 10......2 to go and I started getting hair about 2 weeks ago. I am so excited and it is growing in quick. My family likes to rub my head! I like not having a bad hair day and can't wait to be "topless". Love that phrases and laugh all the time at it. I thought about my hair not blowing in my face....and trying to enjoy the things everyone complains about. No bed head.....no hair dye necessary......no comb needed........no blowdryer.....will need to remember when i am in the sun about suntan lotion with a high SPF if I don't have enough hair in the next few months...although i have no plans to be topless. Can't wait to be PFC in two weeks! The count down is on!
