Hair Hair Hair - Another question

wow so many beautiful ladies posting on this thread. It is so different for all of us, when the hair falls out, to wear wigs, or hats, or scarves. When to go full monty?? But the thing we all have in common are what makes us stronger. We beat the disease, our hair grows back, and we learn what is truly important in life. I know easy for me to say now that my hair is back. But still so true. So, I will try not to complain now that the weather has gotten warm, when my hair gets curly 5 minutes after I blow it all out . . . .
fyi i cut my hair once at 4 months to even it out and haven't needed to since. I forget who asked this.

For me...I found that "coming out" in pictures on these forums and then on Facebook gave me the courage to do it for real - I was surprised how much support I got on FB from my non-cancerous friends, although I was a little suspicious that no matter what, everyone always told me how good I looked....even when I looked like and alien, and lets not forget the Uncle Fester look...that was nice

Hi everyone,
I have followed this thread off and on since January when I went bald. I am about to have taxol #4 tomorrow and I swear my hair is starting to grow. I need to shave my legs and my head has a slight covering of "soft fuzz" as my mom described it. I am down 1/2 an eyebrow and lashes are really thin. So is it even possible the hair on my head is growing or am I just wanting it so bad that I am seeing things???

My head hair started growing on Taxol. Legs and other areas not so much but definitely have hair growth on my head. Yea!!!

My hair started to grow back around then too.....

ksmatthews - your hair looks great ; ) I've decided to colour my hair tonight. I was going to wait to check with my onc nurse on Thursday when I have my Zoladex, but I think I'll just do it.
kdajay - I don't think any of us here should ever apologize for venting. I think we've earned the right to vent, don't you? I managed to keep most of my hair using Elasto-Gel cold caps, and am grateful, but I do understand how you feel. I know if I cut my hair short it will make me feel worse, even though it would look thicker. And when I see young women with those short cuts, like Mia Farrow's in "Rosemary's Baby", I wonder if they are part of our 'club'.

yes yes yes hair can start to grow during chemo treatments. Mine sure did.
I really cannot descirbe the incredible feeling I have by going topless now. It is sort of empowering. I finished my last treatment (35 rads after 8 chemos) and it is almost a symble to me that I am done with cancer. Sounds a little dumb but I know you all get it! Only a few stare at me and that is their own insecurities coming up. I am bold, beautiful and a survivor!!!!!

You go Maggie!! I feel the same way...right now I wear a scarf and don't care what others think! It is all about me being comfortable! I too am going to be a survivor!
Congratulations and best wishes!!0 -
Went in today to get my last herceptin, turned out the doc counted and I have already gotten my full 11 doses. So no Herceptin. I get my port out next week.
And ofcourse what made me even more full of joy...... I am already 3 weeks out from my last one so let the hair growing really take off now!!

My hair has thickened, but is growing really slow, especially on top. I am 6 and 1/2 months PFC. Did anyone have a similar experience?
0 -
MKW - Same boat as you. 1 cm on top 4 months PFC. I think it is the hormone blockade. Everywhere else the hair seems to come back to baseline, maybe a little thiner.

I hope it's OK to change the subject but I was wondering if anyone has lymphedema and what they are doing to ease the swelling.

Hi Ladies,
I too am having a head shaving party this weekend....I will have to consider some cosmos or appletinis too. Love it! It's just going to be my mom, brother, his girlfriend and my hubby and baby. Thank God he is too little to hopefully remember all the bad stuff. I just finished my first AC treatment yesterday; one down, one to go.
I think the head shaving parties are great because it is taking back some control and giving cancer the big finger.
My husband ordered some F' Cancer hats for my mom and I. I will post some pictures (if I can figure it out) when they arrive.
Muscles, I cannot believe someone in such good shape is having to go through this...I am sure it will help being in the best shape of your life, but it just seems so unfair that this disease is so far reaching. It doesn't matter what your demographic is. I hope we can find a cure...soon!

Whoops, I meant one down, three to go! HELLO, chemo brain has set in!

I lost most but not all of my hair after my first round. I still look bald but have wisps of hair all over. Now after 3 treatments those wisps are starting to grow. I am wondering if any hair regrowth I have will fall out with my 4th treatment? I am concerned because it feels so good to see it growing back.

Caitlin, you sound so good and positive. It all sucks, but I had my head shaved after AC #1 too and agree with you about it giving you some control. I took 2 ativans for shaving, but appletinis will work too!
Joan, I don't know if your new growth will fall out with 4th treatment. I know everyone is different and it varies by regimine too. But my hair started growing about #7 of 12 taxol and the new growth never fell out again. It just kept growing. Hopefully this will be the case for you too. As many have suggested on here, taking a weekly picture has really helped me see the progress.0 -
Not gonna complain that I just had to shave my legs.
I can see where my eyebrows are gonna be when they come in.
As for my head, well, it looks like the moon. White w/dark patches.
Love the shaving party idea. Wish I'd done that. I did it at home by myself. This way sounds so much better!

Joan - my hair that started to regrow did not fall out after the 4th treatment..yahoo! Any hair is good hair these days.

MKW and Kimberly - I am 6 months pfc and my hair is growing really slowly. I've been coloring, and after 4 weeks you could barely see the gray roots! I've been doing all kinds of stuff too--biotin, biotin shampoo, gromedi, prenatal vitamins, regular vitamins. Doesn't seem to make any difference, but I've already spent the money so I'll continue. Whatever--its just nice to have a little hair. People don't stare anymore so it must not be too bad.
As to the head shaving parties--I am someone who let it fall out. Boy was that depressing! and messy. I'd recommend the shaving.

JoanQuilts - I started growing hair after the first treatment...was totally bald. I figured it would follow the same pattern as the first go around and fall out again after treatment 2 around 16-20 days, but it didn't. Today was #3 and after showing the doctor the hair growth, she is wondering also if it will fall out. I have about a 1/4 inch now, some color and alot of white. I would LOVE to keep this and get thru #4 with this...but we will see. I'm susing Nioxin shampoo and conditioner every day like I had a full head of hair. Maybe that is giving it some strength??

Do most gals get the white fuzz cut off as the darker hair appears? The woman that sold me my wig (which I never wear) is also a hairdresser and she told me to come back as soon as my "real" hair starts to grow because this white fuzz isn't "real" hair. I dunno how she can get enough of it to cut.
Does this make any sense?

Schatzi, I shaved off the fuzzy stuff.
0 -
Shatzi - ANY hair is real hair dammit !! lol. I actually have alot of dark with the white, so I'd have to shave the colored hair along with it. also, the white I have is not fuzzy, it's the same texture as the darker hair. I've heard of people just dying it when it gets long enough. I think that's what I'd do...Hair is hair..I'll work with it !!! :-)
