Hair Hair Hair - Another question

Uffda,
I have gone topless since the beginning. I just feel more comfortable that way. I shaved my head all over to about 1/4 inch 21 days after my first treatment. I have lots of hats and a wig, but they just seem hot and itchy. For me this is just part of my journey, I know not everyone feels the same. For the record my hair has actually grown and is now about 3/4 an inch long. It has never fully fallen out. I still have eyebrows and eyelashes, although they have thinned. I have 1 treatment left, and I'm hoping I never loose all of my hair!0 -
OMG someone that I never met before actually complimented me on my hair. Hilarious. I was hoping they would ask where I get my hair done so I could answer "in the chemotherapy department!" HAHHAHAHAHA

jpmomof3, LOL! I'm going to remember that one.
A few weeks ago I was working for my DH when a lady kept telling me over and over that my hair was absolutely gorgeous, and who was my hairdresser? She almost fainted when I told her it was a wig and why - the expression on her face was just priceless, and I have to admit I got some weird kick out of the situation . . .
My son told me the other day that with my supershort snow white/silvergrey hair I look 'current' - don't exactly know what he means by that, but I'll take it! Going topless now most of the time 15 weeks PFC. It is just too hot and uncomfortable to be wearing anything including the wig. Eyebrows and lashes fell out PFC, but are back for now. Right eyebrow is very unruly with short hair sticking in all directions. Will have to glue it in place.
Love to read everybody's experiences with this hair growing business. It almost reads like a comedy. Oh, and I learned a new word here: Merkin. LOL!

I am 6 weeks after my last chemo (by the way what does pcf stand for??) and my left eyebrow is extremely unruly... It's so annoying,.. Trying my best to feel normal! What is merkin??
0 -
PFC? i used to think it stood for post f'ing chemo. it mean post final chemo.
merkin is a toupee for the crotch. why would anyone want one? cant answer that!!!

7 weeks PFC. My hair is filling in. Not quite good enough to run around topless in public. Still a little thin in front. But I find myself forgetting to put on a cap when I get out of the pickup & have to run back & get it. Eyebrows are trying to come back, so slow there! My pit & leg hair have returned.... they could have stayed gone!

10 days PFC- Eyebrows have fallen back out,but only in the middle. Eyelashes scraggly and mostly blond, a few are two toned. Hair that grew in during taxol is white and 1/2 inch long, but shedding daily, no new growth yet. Rest of body 99% hairless.
I have a baseball hat with hair attached that looks the most natural and a wig and a few hats. No merkin.
Nails are rainbow color and very painful. Never knew how much I used my nails!
Feeling a little down today and muscles tight and hurting and am tired- hoping as I move further away from the taxol I will feel better.
Reading your posts really helps my mood- you understand.0 -
I could use a Merkin :-). Now that chemopause is here, I'm thinking what's up "down south" isn't going to return to it's glory days. At least the hair on my head is growing in thick and full.

Uffda.. first I have to ask.. are you Norwegian? with a "name" like uffda chanses are.... second, I see you had nipple recon.... are you happy with the result? I am trying to decide between recon and nipple tattoo,
0 -
Ossa- you betcha! I also thought it was a good word for all of this BC stuff!
So far I am very happy with my new nips. Looking forward to the tattooing in a couple months. There is a thread in this forum all about nipple reconstruction. From what I have learned there is a very good tattoo artist in New Orleans(?) that tattoos very realistic nipples and areolas if you decide to go that route. I was on the fence for a while about getting them or just the tattoo. It's crazy but my thought process was this: I don't have problems with anesthesia, so no big deal to have another surgery. I met my deductible, of course, for the year so really my nipples would be 'free.'. and... I didn't think they would be worth $3000 (our deductible) next year....or I would have a harder time justifying the money, if ya know what I mean. Let me know what you decide!0 -
RockyM - Okay, a little personal, but yes, while the hair on my head is growing nicely, everyplace else is pretty sparse. I'm not concerned about "down there," I actually always thought I had a bit too much before, but I used to have to tweeze my eyebrows, now I'm filling them in with a pencil! On another note, I'm tweezing my chin daily....I wish we could just redirect it!

Jpmom- I like your PFC! Lol.

Uffda, perfect name for this

Robyn,
I hear you on the redirection. It seems wrong to tweeze and fill in simultaneously. The rogue chin hairs are particularly annoying.
Anyone know about eyelash regrowth? Mine fell out twice. They are growing back quite nicely but I am concerned / paranoid they will fall out again. Really like having eyelashes.
Thanks,

Has anybody tried Henna for their eyebrows?

Are we so desperate that we are considering wearing a merkin on our heads? Surely not!0
-
Had to google that - oh my don't think so...0

I just love all the pictures and videos!
I am 19 weeks pfc, such a great summer for short hair! The heat was too much for my wig and I to be friends anymore, so on Mothers Day I colored what little hair I had. Since then I used a perming solution to straighten and smooth my curls. I also have kept the sides and back trimmed, trying to let the top catch up. I get so many compliments on my hair..it's kind of funny. What's not funny is people trying to touch my hair!!! Really? Why?
Can't seem to get a photo attached

Sandlake,
Yeah, why do people want to touch your hair? Its like touching your belly when you are pregnant. I had three people touch my hair yesterday! Never had anyone Ask to touch my hair when it was long and fabulous. Lol
Re merkin. You learn something new everyday!

I get the same thing!

Got my first compliment from a stranger on my short hairdo! He told me he liked my hairstyle!!! I feel like I look very boyish but I am getting used to it and almost starting to like it. (I can't believe I just said that) I'm having fun with it and style it differently based on my mood for that day! I am trying to embrace the new me and hope that all of you can and will do the same. I know we are all at different levels. Hair for me has been such a process. Losing it was truly one of the darkest, loneliest times since my dx. I hated wearing a wig but did for work. On the evenings and weekends I enjoyed hats and scarves and realized how fun it was to have a new accesory. When school let out I pulled my wig off and haven't had it on since then, only hats, scarves and bandanas. When I finally decided to go topless I felt free and although I wasn't crazy about the new me I liked it a whole lot better than always covering my head. No longer do I feel like I have to run to my closet to find a hat when I get a surprise visitor. Now I just have fun with the hair gel seeing what new things I can make my hair do. That has been the process of losing my hair and now watching it slowly grow back. I just pray I never have to go through this again! A quote from my son's friend "Your Mom is looking all bad ass with her new hair, like she's kicking cancer's butt!"

Tina: Congrats! I bet you are so excited! I am getting there too in the hair dept. My hair is really, really short, but you can't see the scalp. I only wear my wig now SOMETIMES to work. It depends on what I am doing. I am getting to the point where I don't care. I will wear my wig, though, to my son's wedding. I am so proud of you!

I'm still waiting for scalp coverage, but I do see some progress, just SLOW! Also see the start of little bitty eyelashes, woohoo! Long way from using mascara, but it is a start. Now I wish my brows would grow. Guess it all takes time and we have to be patient. Not one of my better qualities! LOL

My scalp is now all covered with my old dark hair color, about 1/3 inch maybe.seems like it will be many months before it, say, covers my big ears!! Mixture of regular, some fuzzy mixed in on top, and a few bristles in front at almost 10 weeks PFC. I think PF can stand for either final or f*cking, depending on one's mood.
Down south only a few wisps. My sister points out that this hairless look is the style for young women, they shave or pay to get it done. I liked the "au natural " style myself.
Eyebrows thinned a lot 5 weeks PFC. One is scraggly PO, the other more orderly. Grr.now I know how to use pencil and brown powder but nt that well thank goodness mascara does help a lot.0 -
Tina, that's a great attitude to have with the hair. Although I wish I never had to lose it this has given me the opportunity to go through a bunch of different hair phases. Mine is still very short but covering. I think in a couple of months I will even be ready to have a trim to get those wispy clear ends off. And then have some fun as it grows out. I have always liked fairly short hair but never would have dared to go this short. It's kind of trendy in a weird way. I have never had long hair but in response to being bald for most of this year I am going to grow it longer than I ever have. If i can of course. Then I will probably cut back shorter again. At least people can't quite tell if I have my hair like this on purpose or not. So I am glad to see that a lot of us are having some fun with the lemons dealt to us.
As to the eyebrows question, I haven't gone through it yet myself but I understand that the normal life of any particular eyebrow hair is about 3 months. Since ours got synchronized by chemo they will go through their cycles together and thin severely every three months until with time they become less synchronized again. I have heard many people mention they thinned noticeably every three months for several cycles over a year or so. The gift that keeeps on giving.0 -
JPMom: You are so right on the eyebrows. However, Kim, I have not mastered the eybrow pencil thing yet. I might get one of those stencil ones. I have always had beautiful shaped eyebrows that just needed cleaned up. Now, I have to actually work on them. Went to Ulta for help, but still not very good at it.

This look doesn't take long to get at after chemo. I had it for a bit, but it wasn't what I wanted as a final "look." I'm posting this in case anyone wants to be in style :-).

Ok so hair is getting long now. It's 20 months PFC. It's very close to the length I had when it fell out.
Here are some pics I took today. This may be a bit egotistic but I hope you find it interesting.
I like my new hair better, I even like the grey.
Here is my prgress chart that I ahve not posted in a while so you see how far I ahve come.
This is how I looked most of the time on chemo, I always wore a hat. I had wigs never wore them though.
here are some pics pre chemo, yes, I hilighted my hiar like crazy and blew it dry every day.
This pic is after a blow out at the salon pre chemo
This is when I use hot rollers

Rockym: That's the look I am going for (for now 7 1/2 weeks PFC anyway). I have a small head, so I think that "do" will work for me.
It's a good transitional look, I think.
