Iago, I think you're right about the lack of estrogen being a major culprit in our aging skin. I was on HRT for 10 years prior to DX and then had to stop cold-turkey. Now with the AI, any remaining estrogen is being sucked out. So, yes, that would make sense that our aging has accelerated.

I def noticed my skin aging I am not sure if it's just cause I am 48 now or if the tamoxifen is accelerating things I tend to think it is. I did feel like after chemo my skin was dryer. That's how I ended up becoming a Mary Kay consultant. I wanted the discount on all the products because I got the volu firm set which is five products for $199 and I did notice a difference. My skin is firmer under my chin and my eyes are lifted. I have combo skin which complicates things cause my tzone gets oily. The microdermabrasion helps a lot by really cleaning the oily pores and sloughing off the dead dry skin. I am addicted to this stuff now lol.

ps I give discounts to BC.org customers pm me if you need anything.

Hello Everyone!   I haven't been able to post on here in a while.  But am happy to report I am 15 months out from my last Chemo and my hair is finally back to being healthy, shiney and growing at the rate it used to!   I have a thick full head of hair,  i've had it cut about 4 times now.    I've had it colored and highlighted and I love it!    There were times when I thought I'd never have my hair back again,  so it feels really good to have it back and have it so healthy & soft & shiney!    I've never been a patient person,  but have learned to be after this ordeal.    It takes a little time,  but it does come back.  Smile

Who has tried rapidlash?  I never heard of it until I read kjiliberty's post.  I just went and googled reviews and it looks good.  Is it the renewal serum or the eye lash enhancing serum?  I used Latisse for 6 months because I got a buy-1-get-1-free from my PS.  Lashes came in fine but not quite like before.  Now I am out of Latisse and they only make a 5 oz bottle now for $170.  I'm going to have to live without it so looking for a less expensive alternative.

Hi Rosie, I used Brian Joseph Lash & Brow gel - it was $50 at their website and I think it really helped.

Wow, $170 for a bottle of Latisse.  Gosh, sounds pricier than Viagra! lol.  I wouldn't pay that much for Latisse, either.  I have a prescription card through health insurance and pay only $20 for a bottle that lasts me at least a month and a half.

I am 9 months PFC and finally got my first hair cut last night, well actually is was just a trim to even it up. It felt soooo good to go to the Salon again. My hairdresser thinks I will need to get in trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks to have the top catch up with the back and sides. I started using Garlic Shampoo 3 weeks ago and it might be my imagination but I think it has helped.  Next week is my last herceptin ,hopefully that will help the hair regrowth..

Hi all, I am 4 months PFC and my hair is finally coming in.  I could not take the grey so I had my hair salon do a burgundy/pink demi non harsh color in honor of BC of course. I love my hair being short for many reasons, much faster getting ready in the am and it is much cooler when dealing with hot flashes from Tamoxifen!  It is still kinda baby fine, but I am noticing some curl in the back .  Since it is winter I also love wearing different hats.  I am finally comfortable going without a hat but I still wear sometimes for warmth! I am also taking Biotin, which really has helped!!  Just adding my two cents!!

    Best wishes to all!!

I'm 4 1/2 weeks PFC and just starting to see the beginnings of a shadow on my head. Very excited!! However, my scalp is very dry and itchy. I keep scratching it and worry I'm hurting the tender new follicles and baby hairs!!! Is there something I can use to moisturize my head and give my poor scalp some relief?? I'm afraid to use plain old regular lotion in case it clogs my pores/follicles. Help!

fight4two I would use head and shoulders to wash your head. I know some women put olive oil on their scalp. My was a little itchy when the hair started to grow but once it came in a bit the itch stopped.

Yes mine too was itchy and I even had a few inflamed hair follicles which were painful, but once it starts growing you will be amazed how fast! I would also recommend a tee tree shampoo!

Thanks for the itchy dry scalp solutions! Another question, is the eyebrow/eyelash serum to prevent the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes? Or to help them grow back faster?

    Hi,

Oh can't believe my front has a few hairs now. LOL I have a one haired bang started. Uhm no brows or eyelashes. My hair looks like white steel wool. But I at least have something to warm my scalp. It's cold outside. I went to the mall yesterday and it was 73f so I skipped my headcovering. It does not bother me to go without it.Trying some sea salt products for nails and skin. My skin and nails are a mess from chemo. So dry.

fightfortwo here is the mary kay description for the lash and brow serum I don't know if it will prevent lash and brow loss. So far I have only heard form women that it helps them to grow back and that the lashes and brows they have are thicker and stronger. They don't market it to chemo patients only it's for anyone. If you would like to try it I am offering it to my BC.org sisters for $10 off. PM me.

Can anyone explain the stages of hair growing back in?  I am now on 10 of 12 taxol tx's.  I have some peach fuzz and some longer strands.  When does your hair actually come in so it covers the top and sides?  I see a little growth but no volume.  How long after treatment is over does it take to be grown in back to normal?

Waitingforthenextstep, I'm 1-1/2 years pfc.  Currently, the front of my hair is a bit past my chin, the back is to my shoulders.  I had my hair slightly trimmed three times since being pfc.  To give you an idea, see my hair timeline posted below.

Also, consider taking a head shot of yourself at least once a month.  That was the only way I could tell my hair actually was growing. I could have sworn it was at a standstill. Then, several months pfc, I uploaded old and new photos from camera to computer.  To my wonderful surprise, I had a photo from September '11 and one from January '12, and sure enough, I could clearly see my hair was growing.  At that point, I began taking a photo every few weeks (especially when I thought my hair looked particularly nice! lol)

Here I am at Christmas 2012; you can't tell, but my hair is a little longer in back:

Waiting, I highly recommend taking weekly pictures of your hair growth in the beginning to track the changes.  It's hard to see the changes, especially when you are fixated on every strand in the mirror (that was me, anyway!).  Someone on this thread recommended the pictures and they helped me a lot.  below is my timeline, and my most recent picture taken yesterday, 40 weeks post chemo (9 months, 1 week and 1 day...but who's counting?Laughing).  Divine and Lago, you have given me hope and inspiration every step of the way!

Now, 40 weeks PFC after three trims and some highlights!

Thanks everyone, for sharing your experience, and posting the pictures.  I am so tired of wearing wigs and caps all the time.  Sometimes I think this has been the hardest thing for me.  I will be the happiest person the first time I can go out with my real hair!

These hair progression photos are such a big help.  Thanks so much lago (I have had yours bookmarked for ages), The Divine Mrs M and crazyride43.

If everything goes according to schedule my last chemo will be mid-April.  My son is planning on coming out in August and bringing a friend so I've been trying to gauge how much (if any) hair I might have by then as well as when we go on vacation in late September.

The Divine Mrs M and crazyride43 - did you both take biotin?  I'm pretty sure lago did (?).  The integrative physician at the cancer center says I can take it for 3 months post-chemo but I'm sure I'll take it much longer than that and I would take it during chemo if I thought it would help - although I think I've read that it doesn't help during chemo.

Thanks again for posting the progression photos.  Very, very helpful (and makes me hopeful!).

Lee, I have been taking biotin since right after chemo, used nioxin hair products and do a lot of head massage. Not sure if any of it helped but my hair is thick and healthy, and so are my nails. It sounds like you might be at a similar point in August to my 15 week picture. That was honestly one of my favorite hair regrowth stages because it looked like a cute pixie cut and was so easy to style. You will rock your new hair style when your son comes to visit!
