TNNurse your surgeon is a guy. Men love cracks, butt or boob cracks. Also men would have a harder time loosing their testicles or penis then their hair. Bald men are accepted but bald women not so much. Not that tough to understand why he would think that way. He's just a guy.

I love seeing the pictures of the hair regrowth.. even though I probably have about 2 wks left with my hair, I am really dreading the loss.. I got a wig but I really hate it.. LOL.. I hope my hairdresser can help make it look less like a wig.. if I didn't work in an office, I think I'd just do scarves..

Hello all....first time on this topic of hair. I finished with chemo 13 months ago. My hair pre-chemo, was thick but the hair itself rather fine. Now my hair is still thick but the hair is medium texture with still a funky crinckle to it...I hate it. I have to keep my cut short so I don't look like a mushroom! Is there any chance, please say yes, that my hair will return to its normal texture? I would have thought after a year it would. I did have some rather intense chemo. Thanks to all responders.

Sunny2, Chemo curl stops growing about a year after your last chemo(where you are now) . I had to cut all the chemo curl off My hair is slight off from what I remember but I might be delusional.

sunny2 I too kept my hair short. Actually still short. About 1 year PFC my hair started to return to it's normal texture. By 18 months I had almost all of my texture and shine back, by Thanksgiving it was perfect. I'm a bit over 2 years PFC now. Here is my hair transition link. Last picture was taken in August. You can see the dates in the lower left corner. My hair is even better now: linky

Hi friends. Hope you all are well. I am trying to wake up. I am doing ok. I looked at myself yesterday. The scars are ugly and they go across where my nipples used to be. That was not where I thought the ps said he was going to have them. I of course have bruising and swelling.i do not even want to look at them.they are high up too.at least the bmx is behind me. I see bs tomorrow and ps wednesday . We're your scars where I mentioned? I was curious.

Thanks lago and EmmaC....I've always loved my hair...one of my better features, so it really bothers me that it has not returned to its normal state. I was so looking forward to growing it back out after being bald but I can't yet. I'm still hopeful though.

I wish I just had enough coverage to not have to wear a wig or woolen hat in my own house. I have some strands and some fuzz, but still a bald appearance. I don't want my son to see me like this, I am sooooo tired of having to wear something on my head 24/7 for months now. I wish it would end. Any idea how long after tx is done that I might have a complete covering, even if the length is short?

Hi kjiberty. I have had no luck getting a response from my doctor. I have been trying to reach him for several days to find out what he means and why the delay etc. So I finally sent him the following email. I really don't know what to do. I can only goto Kiaser because of my insurance. I want to change doctors but I also just want this to get done and over with.

Hi Dr, Neff. How long would the delay in reconstruction be if no cancer is found in my lymph nodes? I need to know what is going to happen on the 21st so if the mastectomy is going to be done without reconstruction I need to find where they sell the bra inserts. And if the reconstruction delay will be a long time even though there is no cancer found in the lymph nodes I need the information to decide how to proceed. Also, I need the research information on this type of cancer as far as the likeliness of spread if chemo is not done. If it hold a high chance then I would like to go ahead and get the mastectomy done the 21st and start the chemo shortly there after so I can get past this year as quickly as possible.
When they called me and told me they found cancer and gave me the name of it she flat out told me to google it. I know several people who had breast cancer and none of them had to fight to get information from their doctors. I don't understand a lot of stuff in this case. This may be just another day to everyone at Kiaser as you have many cancer patients but you all need to understand this is new and very serious to me. I feel like Brandon and I are alone out here fighting this cancer and not getting help, information, or any support from Kiaser.0 -
Waitingforthenextstep my hair always grew pretty quickly and I have a lot of hair. You can see in the pictures that I went topless at week 13 but I do believe my hair started growing back before chemo. You also had different chemo than I had. Also note that Herceptin does seem to slow hair growth. I even noticed that my hair grew faster once I was finished. I know some women that had to wait months not weeks like me. At the beginning it does seem to be like waiting for paint to dry. I will happen. Be patient.
InTheWind did you get a 2nd opinion. Is this the only BS in your area that Kaiser approves. Telling you to google something is crazy. You need to demand to speak to the doctor and let him know you were told to google this instead of getting an explanation. You are paying him not google. If he doesn't seem to be upset then I would tell Kaiser what's going on. Thats unbelievable. Is he a breast surgeon or just a general surgeon. If not a breast surgeon can't you petition Kaiser to let you see an out of network breast surgeon?

Dr. Neff didn't tell me to google. I just realized it sounded that way. It was a nurse that was calling me back with test results from my biopsy. I got a call back today from Dr. Neff's nurse. She had breast cancer 12 years ago. She was awesome to talk to! She got my surgery scheduled for the 18th. They will remove both and test the lymph nodes that same day. After talking to the nurse with experience I decided to go ahead and do the chemo and thus there will be a delay in reconstruction. Dr. Neff is crappy at getting me information that I need. I think when I need advice or information I will call the nurse with experience.

I got it. I thought it might be the nurse. Stay away from support staff. I found both my nurse and my BS good but the other staff was clueless and made mistakes ( like ordering the wrong biopsy and giving me someone else's blood test script!). After that I never trusted anything she said and always asked for the nurse. I don't think she works there anymore.

Inthewind: I am glad you heard from the nurse. They probably won't know much more unti the get in there, check the nodes, etc. I will keep you in my prayers next week. Boy, you got things moving very quickly. Sending hugs to yoU!

inthewind; why is immediate reconstruction not an option?
many of us have tissue expanded put in and have then expanded whilst going through chemo, and then have exchange to implants after chemo. thats only IF you are interested in THAT method of recon.0 -
I am two years PFC and I only cut my hair like twice in that time. I thought it was all the same as it was but a little thicker and curlier because of the layers. But now I can see the ends are way curlier than the new hair that grew in. It's almost like a perm growing out. My stylist thought I had curled the ends before I cam there. I like the curls although they are a little dry. I think I will be sad when they all grow out.

Carrol2: I feel exactly the same I like my curls very much and yes it feels just like a perm growing out. In March it will be 2 years PFC for me too and I only had one haircut. It was very minimal anyway. The ends are a little dry but not too much. I have colored many times but I do not use a blow dryer. It is a good thing I live in a warm place.
My hair looks very much like yours except it is a little shorter. Since I started taking Biotin about 6 months ago I think it is growing faster. I wish I started sooner.

Hi all,
Okay I have what's probably a stupid question..... what do you clean your head with when the hair is gone? Do I still use shampoo and conditioner...... or just soap?? I mean is the bald scalp considered skin or hair??
I still have hair but the bald spots are starting to converge..... I think my remaining hair got insulted when I started wearing a wig yesterday because I woke up this morning with a lot of hair on the pillow..... so need to be prepared for the next step.

jayjayc I used shampoo on head when I was bald. You want to keep your head and folicles clean but not too dry. So I think any gentle shampoo will work but I liked head and shoulders a lot for keeping the skin healthy. I never actually lost every bit of my hair. I had these long strands all aorund my hiarline that I kept cause under a hat it looked like I kind of had hair. But it was dead hair very unruly and dry so I kept it tied in a band on top of my head. needless to say I never let anyone ever see me like this well accept the pics i posted on here. I never relaly wore a wig but I did have some kind of hat on 24/7.

jayjayc, an aesthetician familiar with cancer patients told me that the skin on your head needs to be treated the same as the skin on your face...cleansing and moisturizing. When I was bald I just washed my head with the same Cetaphil cleanser I used for my face and then put moisturizer all over my bald head! I also got some scalp conditioning spray (Jonathan Masters I think?) that was very moisturizing and supposedly helps with hair regrowth. Initially when my hair was growing back I used baby shampoo, but then my hairdresser told me it was the absolute worst shampoo because it strips the hair. I used nioxin after that.

jayjayc; I bought Johnson & Johnson Head to Toe. I figured if its good enough for babies. I still use it in fact. Makes my hair amazingly soft.

I used shampoo. No need to condition because I didn't need a soft head

I used baby shampoo on bald head up until you could see hair growing back then switched to Nioxin Shampoo & conditioner. Everyone is saying Wow your hair is really growing Yay finally people really notice. I am a happy camper

someone told me to get Johnson and Johnson Purpose - I didn't see it in the drugstore though but maybe Walmart will have it.

Ok, so I know it grows back weird. My straight light brown hair is now growing in curly salt & pepper. So does it ever start to revert back to normal?

Hi,
Used baby shampoo while completely bald. I also used shampoo like suave with conditioner sometimes.0 -
Victoria38 my dark brown and gray hair grow back black with grey too. Even my eyebrows although it did grow back fairly straight… not that I let it grow very long. I think it's no longer black but I did get more grey. I color it so I can only tell by looking at my roots. But I also went through chemopause and the ESD (estrogen sucking drug) might also be contributing to the grey.

I used baby shampoo and conditioner that came with my hair color (those little tubes). Then when it started to come in, I used Nioxin shampoo. I also take Biotin twice a day.

Big milestone today-- I wore mascara! My lashes are still short but they're full enough that it didn't look entirely awful. Yay!

Ann,
Congrats....... it's so wonderful to hear positive news about life after treatment.0 -
jayjayc - I'm still using shampoo and conditioner on what's left of my hair (which is about 1% of what it used to be in volume/amount).
This past summer I switched to shampoo that's sulfate-free. I intend to continue sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner even if I'm completely bald.
