smethot once I went topless I got my hair cut & colored about every 3 weeks once I colored it. It took a while to get him to stop cutting my bangs, then stop cutting them so short. They are longer now but hair still short. My stylist charges me a lot less now that it's short (and I think because I have yet to find full time work). linky in case you haven't seen it yet.

I finished chemo in February 2011--almost excactly one year ago -- and went topless about 3 months later. I had worn my wigs every time I went out and whenever my young grandsons came over to visit. I didn't want to scare them. One night, in May, when they were staying at our house, the oldest woke up in the middle of the night crying and I ran in there, not taking time to put on a wig or even sleep cap. He never said a word about my near-hairless state. From that moment on, I stayed topless.

My last chemo was July 16th and I colored my hair and went topless on October 27th about 14 weeks, PFC.

Has anyone tried extensions? My hair is at an awkward stage - 1 year pfc. Length would really help.

I did not tell lots of people about BC so I kept my Wig on longer even when I took it off at about five months I got a tremendous number of comments. Seems like the whole world cares about our hair.

I did go without my wig if we were on road trips to go into the store or bathroom. I had mine colored at about 17 weeks PFC and cut and it looked so much better but still seemed way too short to go public Without engendering a lot of comments as it was still fairly thin. The second time I had it colored I didn't cut it at all and then I stopped wearing the wig.

It may be that younger women's hair comes in all at once but mine still has new hairs coming in seven months plus later and it's really thickening up now. I have decided to go for length for the next several months not trying to even it out, it will stay short for so long if I try to even out all the layers of hair that is coming in. I'm sure that my hairdresser could make it look a lot better but I decided I'm going to have to go through some awkward phases to get some length so may as well do it now.

I had baseball cap with hair which I wore through most of the chemo phase unless I was inside, it was really cute and comfortable and looked just like my old hair. At some point as the weather got colder it seemed kind of silly to be wearing a hat inside and outside so I changed to my wig. Many people complemented my hair not knowing that it was a wig which felt kind of odd-and they were particularly disappointed to see my real hair so short.

I find it incredibly convenient to have my own hair pretty much no matter what it looks like.

Victoria38 - I received my Abbey Cap and you were right - it is so cute! It could be dressy or casual - I really like it and I already ordered another color.. Laughing

Victoria: like dltnhm I never really felt the wig, so I never wore it. I was topless at 8 weeks. I didn't get my first trim until about 24 weeks. I get my third Friday. We trim from around the ears and below. Just letting the rest fill in and grow out. Filling in takes time, but no I didn't touch the top whilst it did/does.

Hang in there... The hair loss was the most demoralizing part for me. I felt striped bare before the world. When I finally said F-it and just took the cap off I got my self confidence back. Now I ware a cap because my head gets so cold, but I leave a little hair sticking out in Front. It's like in need to be sure people know I'm not bald... Funny thing is; who would actually THINK THAT?! "Oh I bet she's bald under there". Lol! Chemo really does drive you CRAZY! My last tx was October 10, 2012; my avatar was taken two weeks ago.

I would say most people could go topless by about 6 months but at 4 months if you can rock the gi jane you might have enough coverage then too. I guess it depends on how short your comfy with. The very top of my head had kind of a bald spot so I waited a long time before I felt ok without a hat.

Here is a link to my hair growth timeline. I used to be able to paste it here from photobucket but now I can only paste a link.

I wore a wig most of the time, but I hated it and was ready to ditch it as soon as I could.  I went without any covering on my head at 11 weeks out.  I'm just now only 15 weeks PFC and still have extremely short hair, but my head is fully covered and that's all that really matters to me.  The avatar of me is a little dark, but I took it last week some time (14 weeks).  I'll have to get a better picture on here when I get the time.

It took me 8 months before I felt comfortable without the wig. I rarely wore it at home and I slowly stopped wearing it around close family and friends, but I had quite a bit of hair before I managed to ditch it all together. Work was the biggest hurdle for me...I felt like I was on display. But, I've gotten nothing but compliments, so I think I was my own worst critic. It's hardest for us because what we see in the mirror is so different than what we were used to seeing.

I'm trying to enjoy my hair and embrace my curls. I'm 1 year pfc and it feels like it's taking forever to grow, but when I look back, it's definitely come a long way! Hang in there, ladies.

What a difference a year makes! I went topless at 7 1/2 weeks, but it was summer and I couldn't stand anything on my head. My last chemo was 6/4/12 and I just finished Herceptin last Monday.

is anyone else addicted to their hats? I am 5 months post chemo and now have a decent amount of hair. but my head is still  too cold and I wear a hat in the house (and other people's) and still hav to wear in bed too!

I want to go hatless, as I was so looking forward to my hear coming back! but can't! I am wondering if this is partly a psychological thing with me?

KristinFro, so Beautiful then and so Beautiful now!  Are you going to let your hair grow or keep it short?  Short hair looks very nice on you.

Thank you, ladies! Islandmom, I think I'll keep it short for the upcoming summer, then I might try to grow it out a little in the fall. It was at my shoulders before all this, so maybe somewhere in between.

Thank you all so much for your replies!  And a big thank you to those who posted pictures!  You guys look awesome!

Unlike some of you, I love my wig and it's not too uncomfortable, unless wearing for long periods.  I also love my Abbey caps and think I look better in the cap than topless at this point.  Even though I am on Biotin I think my herceptin is slowing my growth rate down.

I have about 3/4" on the top and 1/2" on the back and sides, with some areas not being filled all the way in.  I am at 18 weeks.  I guess it varies a lot person to person.

I will be going to a women's conference in April and there will be swimming, so for sure I will be topless at least part of the time there.  At that point I will be 6 months.

I'll still be on Herceptin through June.

Thanks again for all your replies!

When I went shopping for the halo wig I tried on a wig that was made by Estetica.  It was surprising comfortable and I really liked the style.  In retrospect, I wish I had bought this style versus a long style (the one I tried on was a bob - http://www.e-wigs.com/wigs.php?id=1635)

I feel like I have a large head (the women at the wig shop thought average but I've always had trouble finding hats that fit).  Anyway, for some reason the wig linked above was really comfortable.

Victoria, your post mentioning swimming reminded me of wearing swim caps as a kid.  Ugh, I used to loathe putting one of those on!

when can you use real hair dye? I have been using the 28 day wash out since starting to get hair back. But I just used it and It does not want to work now for some reason.  I am 10 mo pfc  but I don't want my hair or scalp to dry out either. any info would be great.

    Hi ang7894,

I am 8 months PFC and went to have my hair dyed blond yesterday after having received the OK from my MO.  My hairdresser used a permanent colour, however, it did not come out as well as I had hoped for ( my hair had initially grown back a salt & pepper colour with silver/white in the front). After the colour was put in, it turned out more like a strawberry/golden blond and did not cover the silver/white I had in the front.  She could have bleached my hair first, however, was hesitant seeing this was the first time I was getting my hair dyed after chemo.  She was concerned that the bleach would burn my scalp or damage my hair.  I intend to wait a few weeks and see whether I'll have it bleached or not - my hair will also be a bit longer then too - right now my hair is about 3".  Hope this helps.

I had my hair colored at 17 weeks PFC with the same color I had used for the last several years. it is not a permanent color and does not use peroxide it is more of a wash that fades over time I am a strawberry blonde. My hairdresser thought it looked dull compared to prior to chemo and there was one area that did not take the color well in front.

I had it done again 7 weeks later and we decided to go slightly darker and my hairdresser also thought it looked dull not typical shiny, I have heard it takes nine months to a year for the shine to start coming back.

I'm 28 weeks PFC and have noticed it starting to actually get a little oilier or dirty, before I didn't notice it ever looking or feeling dirty so maybe the oil glands are waking up or something.

    anyone know anything about this?

LeeA - Me too, hated swim caps.  I remember how they would pull and hurt.  I had very long straight hair.   You know I bought a longer wig which was the same color and style of my previous hair.  But ... I wear the short blond one all the time now.  One of these days I'll take pictures of both.
