I tried penguin cold caps and it was so cold I had to stop mid session. For me it was too difficult. I had to accept hair loss. I'm taking biotin now and my hair is growing

2 years? omg........I stopped chemo at mid/end of Jun followed by radiation until mid August. The hair is coming back in and its about 2 inches...maybe. It looks a little thin in 2 spots but its growing. I am not comfortable going out in public with this teddy bear looking hair do & especially NOT to the office.

It took it a lil time to start up again & grow, hope it picks up some speed. I don't want to have a dude hairdo!

Gina - I know how you feel - my last chemo was April finished radiation in July so I am about 1-2 months ahead of you .. I started going wigless to the office 1 month ago.. its short but I started to wear more eye makeup and bigger earrings and although the first couple days were hard for me, I got a lot of compliments and support at work. My hair has a mind of its own and is still unfixable - can't make a part or try to get bangs..it is just growing straight back but its curly/wavy and some days frizzy.. and it came back black with some gray right in the front.. I haven't colored it yet.. but will be going to the hairdresser soon so he can maybe shape it up better.. but I am glad the wigless days are over.

I first started going wigless on weekends and once I got through that, I did it at work.. maybe you could try something like that..

Nancy, mine also grew back curly, wavy, frizzy, coarse and unmanageable. When I get it trimmed I also have it thinned out - a lot. A hairdresser recommended using Moroccan oil on it - there are different brands. I'm using it generously now and it does seem to help. And my hair seems to be slowly straightening out, very slowly.

I wanted to ask all the ladies whose hair grew back curly, does a flat iron work on it?

Mine is still very short but I see a curl starting to happen!

    Thanks

Hi everone...hope your Turkey Day was wonderful!

My hair has started to grow back like wildfire this past week, EXCEPT the rear top of my head...I like like I have my hubby's bald spot...lol.   Is this kinda a normal growth pattern?

My hair grew back curly in the back and wavy/curly on the top and sides.  It seems that anything I try to do looks the same in the end.  It's just a big puffy mess.  My hair used to be a sort light auburn.  Now it's a dishwater blonde.

shoppygirl - I think you have to go with the curls - its not so bad its just unfixable hair -like it has a mind of its own! I am just glad to have hair!

ChickaD  Mine grew back like and old man I had some on the side but the top   and it took much longer.  I'm still thinner on top than on the sides.  I have had 2 hair cuts now and  the curls have grown out I'm back to my hair just thinner. I use Biotan sp? shampoo but others have talked about a vitamin so I'm going to look into it. My nails are still crappy. They almost came off so I gues the look much better than they used to.   I have been away since my surgery  too tired to keep up  but I want to let you know my thoughts are with you and your husband and his eye.  flatsy

    Hi,

I am 11 months PFC. My hair came in thin. I had it trimmed today. I wear it short though I want it longer for the winter. It has a mind of it's own. Parts are curly. parts are straight. My eye brows came in and fell out and are in but sparse. It's all good. I was bald last year at this time or just had the peach fuzz. Thankful I have hair. :) My nails are a mess. I have lots of ridges. I just keep them short.

    Have a good night.

    Hi there,

Can anyone tell me how humidity effects chemo curls? I have a conference in New Orleans this week and am not sure if I can stand a wig for 4 days and nights - but I hate my shot curly hair. It's 8 months post chemo and I have been on hormone blockers for 6 so that hasn't affected things, thank goodness, but....a straight iron would just be a waste if humidity will just make it pop up again.

I am upset - the last few days my hair has started thinning... it was growing in so thick and nice, I was really happy .. but in the last 5 days it has gotten thin and I can see my scalp.. why? is it the medication??

Wow, Nancy, that's discouraging. Sorry to hear that. I started Arimidex about 2 weeks before you did and it hasn't caused my hair to thin or hindered it from growing. I wonder how long it takes it to significantly reduce our estrogen level. That probably varies from one person to the next.

Sick of Pink, I am keeping my hair so short I wouldn't dare try to use a straight iron on it. It's usually pretty humid here in San Antonio, but my hair has been thick, coarse and frizzy since it grew back. It's hard to know if the humidity makes it worse, but products like sculpting gels, silicone serums and Moroccan oil seem to help a lot.

I'm with you ladies on the out of control, frizzy hair. I live in Houston - ultra humid and the American Crew pomade works well on me. I deep condition regularly too and am using a flat iron at times. Sometimes I use redken spray wax for texture. I've got about 4 inches on top 7.5 months PFC. I went platinum as soon as I had a nubbin of hair but am going back to brown today and adding extensions on top. I'm hoping it looks fab and not ridiculous. I also found that my hair came back faster as soon as I ditched my wig.

After 2.5 years PFC I realize that my curls are not going away. Now that my hair is longer the waves are softer but if it is humid it gets pretty curly. Living in Florida it is hard to escape humidity. I do not use serums and gels too often, for some reason they make my hair look greasy, maybe I have not found the right product.

IamNancy sorry to hear you hair is thinning. It could be hormone changes. About 1.5 years after being done with chemo my hair started to fall. I would even collect the hair at the shower and count it. I was loosing about 400- 500 hairs/day which is much higher than 100 which I guess is normal. I went to my doctor who checked for Thyroid and other things but found nothing abnormal. After a couple of months it seemed to get better, it is normal now. Since I had been taking Tamoxifen before and after I do not think it was that. My doctor thinks it was just hormone changes.

Iamnancy, I have been having the same problem, hair was growing in then in oct I started noticing that my hair was coming out in the shower. Everyone said it still looked okay but now it's 2 months of continuos hair loss, hair is thinner, scalp is showing more and I am worried that it will all come out again. I have appt with hair dresser today to see how much hair she thinks is gone. She has been monitoring my hair growth. I am not on tamoxifen or arimidex but I did have prophylactic ovaries removed but it was 8 months ago. I'm trying different shampoos, taking biotin but so far nothing has been helping. I'm not sure what's going on but I have heard of people losing their eyebrows and eyelashes in a cyclical pattern and it grew back so I am just hoping this will grow back as well.

I'm 3 months out from chemo and my hair is very fine, straight and about an inch long. BUT, it finally covers my entire head and actually looks like I meant for it to be this way. I stopped at the mall on my way home from rads today and the girl behind the checkout at Sephora said my ultra short haircut looked really good on me! That brightened my day!

I'm wondering if anybody else's hair started coming in light (gray/blond) then went dark? I have brown hair and had no gray before but when it started coming in, it was all light. Then after it grew in about a quarter inch it came in dark. So now I have this kind of frosty look going - dark hair with light tips.

hate to tell you but my hair got real frizzy here in Orlando. Maybe NOLA wont be so humid this time of year. I found some extensions on ebay:

jessica simpson hair extensions that were very easy to use and MUCH cooler than a wig.

Mely - I hope you are right and its just a hormone change - estrogen levels have to be lowering more and more with the meds.. others have suggested it might be thyroid and I might check with my doctor about it.. what did your hairdresser say about yours? I really hope its just a cycle and will balance out.. I know my eyebrows and eyelashes have come and gone and now my eyebrows especially are sparse..

Iamnancy- hairdresser definitely noticed the hair loss. She is suggesting nioxin shampoo system so getting some from Amazon. She left the tops of my head a little longer so I can do the comb over but at least cleaning up the sides makes it look better. Weather is a little drying now so I wonder if that is part of it?

Mely-let me know how the nioxin shampoo etc. works for you... I wonder once you start something like that do you have to continue?

Nancy and Mely - I too have noticed thinning hair.

I agree that it must be hormonal changes. I was fine on Tamoxifen but when I switched over to Anastrozole I noticed more and more hair coming out in the shower.

No bald spots yet but I am using Nioxin, taking 3000 mgs of Biotin and also Bio-sil.

I can see and feel how thin it's getting but everyone else says it looks good and no bald patches. After chemo my hair came in thick and full and so now that it's a bit thinned out it's much easier to manage.

I just hope it stops falling out soon!

I am 18 months PFC and my hair is still curly in the back. I am keeping it short. I have people ask me all the time if my hair is a perm or natural curly. I now say it's natural curly because I have gotten it cut 12 times since chemo and it's still coming in curly. It's still wavy in the front, but nothing a flat iron can't handle.

Hey y'all! Wow I'm loving seeing everyone's pics as their hair grows back. It's true, hair grows at it's own pace. Some come back curly, some a different color. Some of y'all know I totally blogged my regrowth. And since today is the FOUR year anniversary of my last chemo, I updated the "Hair regrowth post" one last time with the "Mission Accomplished" photos. So here's the blog post that pretty much documents Hair To Bald To Hair Again. Hope y'all are all enjoying the holiday season & the regrowth! =)
