milees, just wanted to reassure you it gets better! My two boys do request I wear my wig when their friends are around...it's normal for them to want mom to look like they're used to her looking I guess.  Your eyelashes and eyebrows will be back before you know it...lol, by the time you master the makeup you won't need it anymore! I actually returned my eyebrow kit today.....I never wound up using it, just used some eyeshadow and an angled brush.  I wore a lot of eyeliner, you couldn't tell my lashes were gone unless you were really close.  I dreaded that part almost more than losing my hair but it was a very brief window, thankfully!

Hi everyone.  This week marks a milestone for me.  Exactly one year ago, my hair started falling out from chemo.  I lost all of my hair with the exception of a few strands in the back.  I finished chemo at the beginning of June and have had one hair trim since.  I recently had coloring put in and this pic is me now.  Exactly one year after loosing my hair.  It's been a long, frustrating journey and I still have a ways to go but am finally happy with my hair and have started wearing my short pixie cut to work.  I bagged up all of my wigs, scarves, hats, etc and dropped them off at cancer services 2 weeks ago and the feeling was so liberating and then I cried like a baby.  I cried because I reflected back on it all and it was hard!  The hair loss was the hardest part.  To all of you just beginning the regrowth process, hang in there!  It will grow back!

Some of you mentioned eyebrows, I used a kit from Sephora made by Anastasia of Beverly Hills and it was great.  It was kind of pricey but to me it was worth it!

PamelaC47, Thank you :)  It is good to hear the brows and lashes will come back soon.  It put mascara on the sad left over lashes that I have today...and noticed a thin line of new growth!  Yeah!!!!

LW0919, you are gorgeous!!!!!!!  And thank you for the brow kit recommendation!

    Lori

Your hair looks amazing. I am two months behind you and don have anywhere near that much hair.  I actually just purchased a wiglet for the top of my head as I was so sick and tired of my long wig. It looks good  but I am very frustrated at how slow it is comming back.

    You look georgeous !!!

I'm on day 9 after my first treatment and my hair feels weird but hasn't started falling out yet. Should I shave it off now or wait until it actually starts falling out? My partner is ready to break out the clippers but I'm hesitant because it seems so final. Please advise.

AKJ - the hair thing was the hardest part for me.  I knew in my head that it would fall out, but in my heart I kept hoping maybe I'd be one of the rare few that didn't lose it.  I couldn't accept it until it actually happened.  On about day 15, I had to pull a big wad of hair out of the drain in the shower 4 or 5 times...  and that was it.  I shaved my head that night.  You can just let it fall out, but there's hair everywhere, so it's more practical to have little 1/4" pieces everywhere rather than long ones.

Thanks y'all.  It never seems to come in fast enough!

Shoppygirl - I had a wiglet too that I wore up until a couple of weeks ago.  They are definately better than a full wig but the little clips would sometimes rub a little sore spot on my scalp but still felt better than the wig.

One thing I realized I always took for granted was how amazing it feels when I feel my hair move as the wind blows through it!

AKJ:  I never did shave mine.  I let it fall out and it was terribly difficult.  I think it just depends on the person.  I was in denial, hoping that it wouldn't actually fall out and I didn't have the courage to shave it.  My scalp started feeling weird and started to really hurt by around day 10-12.  By day 15 after my first chemo it was falling out by the handfuls.  I did cut it to just under my chin because it does fall out everywhere.  Best to luck in whatever you decide to do.  Hang in there, it does get better!

Timbek2, Jojo2373 and all those who are sharing their hair journey...may I just say how grateful I am. You're the reason I've kept hoping.I remember one sentence which helped me immensely a year and a half ago, a sentence by one of the girls around here, I don't know on which post: it went: "When you look at yourself in the mirror, and you don't see yourself, just hang in there, because you are somewhere behind those eyes, believe me"

Hell yeah, believe her, believe me who passes this on.

One year and a half later, this still resonates as one of the truest and most accurate things I've been told about cancer and appearance. It does get better.

Another nice note: I had a nice pink spring coat prior to BC diagnosis. When I chose a ginger wig (I'm a hazelnut: i chose ginger only because I wanted a specific hairstyle and shape and this wig was the closest to my real hairstyle), I did not feel comfortable wearing flashy colors, let alone pink (the boldest I did was green and blue). Today, with my hair, and the sunny days returning, I pulled out my pink coat from the top closet of my room, where it was buried among old shirts and V-necks... it felt so good to wear it again. Smile I'm me!

AKJ I never shaved mine but I did cut it short the day it started to fall out. I have very thick hair and it can be messy. I still was vacuuming my pillow and bathroom every day for 2 weeks... not to mention having to empty the shower drain twice every shower.

But there was one day that October when the wind was around 50 mph. I went for a walk and it did remove quite a bit. Granted I freaked the doorman when I came back in and my part was now 1" wide! I'm sure my hair made it to some birds nests in the spring that year.

Be sure to get a lint roller. You can use it on your head as well as your clothes.

lago your too funny. Your windy day story made me laugh...thanks.

AKJ: there's no right or wrong with shaving or not shaving your head. It's a personal choice. For me, my hair started to fall out by the Third  week after chemo and each day, it got progressively thinner. My bathroom was a complete mess every time I brushed, blow dried, or washed my hair. It got to the point where I was shedding constantly. There would be hair on my clothes, in my car, on the floor I just walked over etc. I tried to hang onto my hair as long as possible but ultimately felt a sense of relief when I cut it. Now I'm in the process of watching it regrowth!!! It's a long slow process but we will all get there.

I know it may sound silly, but my GI Jane short hair is too short (for me) to go without a wig and I needed a change so I ordered a new wig. It arrived 2 days ago and I love it. It's a Raquel Welch wig. I haven't tried curling/straightening it yet but am excited at the possibility of using hair utensils again!!

AKJ sorry did not see your question: same as Iago; I never shaved mine but I cut it short the day it started to fall out. There was always some hair remaining throughout the chemo, but of course most of my head was bald.I just did not have the heart to shave those, so cutting was a less violent experience for me.

AKJ, I was hesitant to shave my head, like others was hoping to be the one in a million that didn't lose it. I had my wig ready to go before I even started chemo....after the second treatment it started to fall out and I cut it short to fit better under the wig.  But after a day or two the hair was everywhere, it was disgusting and adding insult to injury having to clean it all the time.  So one night in the middle of the night I shaved it.  I'm glad I did, it was too painful watching it fall out and now that it's growing in its nice and even all over.

I never shaved mine either, but cut it really short.  I still look back at my bald pics, it inspires me on my not so good days to remember.

wow! You ladies all look so beautiful! There is a certain confidence we gain going through the hair loss and having it come back-as if we all glow with the knowledge that we learned hair does not make the woman. It's a hard lesson, but look how we all have emerged!

As far as whether to shave your head, it is a personal decision. I had below shoulder length hair, and had a friend shave it to about an inch right after my first chemo-I wanted to be in control as to my hair loss, not cancer! This gave me strength and a feeling of control that I felt I lost after dx. When my scalp started hurting and I began to loose hair, I would vacuum my head!! I found this felt good and got rid of a lot of hair without leaving a trail! This lasted for about a week for me. I am now 10 months Pfc, and feel my hair has been slow to grow, but I just found out I am hypothyroid. I also have totally embraced the grey. At least for now lol.

Donnabelle, Carol2, and Slv58--your hair looks lovely!

Slv58--It seems to have filled in nicely. I'm still very thin on top, but started gong wigless last week...if I comb it just right and if the wind doesn't blow...

AKJ--I shaved my head. I also found the wig was more comfortable without hair underneath--good luck with everything.
