Hair Hair Hair - Another question

for you girls getting the chemo curl (or if you've always had curly hair like me) I've been using curly hair products for years (devacurl) after finally figuring out how to manage my curly hair. There is also a specific way "deva" stylists will cut your hair ( ie cutting it dry). The products have no sulfates in them, that's the stuff that makes the shampoo sudsy and also dries out hair. Curly hair tends to be dry and coarse. I use devachan products, shampoo called "no poo", conditioner and gel. Although you're hair may not stay curly while it is, dont brush it, just finger it dry, dont wash it everyday, but use a conditioner every day. It will look shorter than straight hair because the curl will take up length but the worse thing you can do it try and brush it out because it will get frizzy. I'm only 10 wks PFC so I can't use my techniques yet as I just have a thin covering but look at deborahanne's picture. Her hair looks great curly. And she is embracing it now. Explore around the devachan.com website for techniques and products. There are sulfate products in stores now also but the techniques of how you manage curly hair is important. Treat your new hair like a fine piece of silk. We are all beautiful women, inside and out!

The most wonderful thing about seeing everyone's hair pics are the beautiful smiles as that hair returns.

I just want hair! I don't care what color, straight or curly.
And while I am at it I want my smell and taste back. And my stomach to stop hurting and my nose to stop dripping. And my body to be strong again.
Sorry, a venting attack hit me!

deeC, omg I was exactly the same way and I think I probably had almost the exact same post maybe 2-3 months ago. I finished chemo on 4/21 and I so wanted hair, any color would do. And it is all coming back now. My taste buds returned almost fully after about 2 weeks PFC, love that!!, my hair was slower than most but now is coming in and it's gray with some dark but that is perfectly ok, it's something. And eyelashes and eyebrows returning was great too, making me look more like myself, actually I feel pretty now and I can't believe I'm saying that because I hated looking at myself in the mirror for a long time. I would say to my husband that I looked like an alien, long face, bald head, pale skin, pale light eyes with no eyelashes and brows...you all know the look. And nose will stop dripping when the nose hairs start coming back. You won't even notice it and then all the sudden realize that your nose isn't so drippy anymore...yea!
Vent away...you can do it here and we all know exactly what you are talking about, we get it!

Lisa - thanks so much for the curly hair tips and for mentioning the DevaCurl products! If my hair stays curly, I'll definitely be trying those products. I love how my hair is so much easier to care for - no coloring, no blow-drying, just wash, use a light gel, comb through, dry naturally, then gently style with my fingers. Another bonus - my scalp no longer itches. My hair has never been this easy to care for. :-)
I'm so glad some of you have finished chemo! I was there late November. Best to you as your body returns to normal! I'm so thankful for this board - it really encouraged me as my hair seemed to take forever to grow back.

Today's picture at 11 wks. I am a slow grower but I'm getting used to my look and actually feel kind of pretty. Loving showing off my earrings and I'll wear different ones every day. My Mohawk/racing stripe is filling in. The top is thicker than the sides for me and still have that high forehead that I always had but my hair was very curly and brown (although colored) before. I'll see how it comes in, I may actually keep it white if it's a nice white/gray.

hair looks good Lisa. It's filling in great.

Lisa definitely some more growth since the last set of pics. Still hoping for more to fill in on the top of my head, I can still see scalp shining through.

Lisa - your hair is coming in very well! Don't you love the feel of it!
Bosumblues - here's the link you were referring to with all the pictures - it's called the "The
Gray Hair Series" and I just love how the photographer has done a great job capturing
men and women of various ages showing that gray hair is beautiful,
sophisticated, stylish, and graceful. Any of you new to this link, scroll down after you open it to see some amazing pictures! They have really encouraged me to embrace my natural shades of gray which is now starting to have a few shades of brown. :-)0 -
I was complemented by some one today about my short white/grey hair. It is about 10 weeks PFC and an inch long, still thin on the top. She said it looked very trendy and thought I had cut it like that.

Barbara - I've gotten a lot of compliments like that - those comment have really helped me move forward! I'm sure you are looking good!
Bosumblues - I've seen youtube videoes of young women showing how to make their hair silver/gray!
The funny thing is that about a year ago, before being diagnosed with cancer, I was wanting a "new" hair style. Well, I certainly got one! But it's not the one I would have willingly chosen! :-)

My hair has been growing back for a year now - I kept getting it cut to keep it short .. lately its been turning back into my "regular" hair - its thinner and has less body.. I was just getting use to the chemo hair and was hoping I would at least keep some of the thickness..

IamNancy you are right on track. I keep my short and right about the year mark my original hair started to come back. Granted for me my hair actually got fuller, more body and shiny just like it used to be. Chemo hair was like fur not hair.

and tell me again...when does the facial hair/fur fall out? I'm very self conscious. It looks like a very fine soft beard and without a lot of head hair I think it is more noticeable. I guess when hair starts to grow post chemo it grows everywhere! Ugh
Here is a picture of my 5k race this weekend. Ran it in 36.14! It is part of a 15k Boilermaker road race in Utica ny. The biggest 15k in the country. As I've said on other threads, it makes me feel like I am back in control of my body. I ran and walked it. I have done this race for 8 years and wasn't sure I would make it this year but I did! I am 12 wks PFC today! 2 more weeks of radiation!

you look fabulous!! Lisa! the makeup gal @ my daughter's wedding said Sally Hansen makes some facial hair strips that are very gentle & will remove that hair - i plan on trying this week so i'll let you know

I don't want it to come in prickly though. I'm hoping it will eventually fall out.(maybe?) I have a little Remington electric shaver but it feels like soft stubble. There was also mention of "fuzz off" a cream hair remover but I'm concerned about the same thing. I'm getting compliments from my medical staff, family and all I my kids friends (young adults in their 20's) this weekend on my hairstyle, I've heard sleek, edgy, cool etc. I'm starting to buy it! The color kind of glows its so white lol!
Notbuyingit, how was the wedding? Did we see pictures?

I can hardly wait until my RBC, Hemoglobin & WBC stabilize. Believe me, as soon as I think the danger of infection is lower & the red blood is consistently going up - I'll be back with electrolysis to get rid if the chin hairs.

Nails - I did report on another thread, but since hair & nails are all related, I thought I'd share here. I'm seven months PFC and on Herceptin only through September.
In the last 3 weeks I thought I had gotten dirt under my finger nails that I couldn't get out and it looked like nails were lifting further back. Derm doc says it's a Pseudomonas infection that has invaded where the nail & nail beds are weak & damaged. It is causing the nails to lift more. I have antibiotic drops that I try to rub under the nails twice a day for 2 weeks. So yes, in my case Herceptin definitely effects the nails.
And Lago - love the description. Yes, my slowly growing hair is more like fur.

Bosum - YES - red or purple or green!!!

yes, I notice I still have a lot of fuzz on my face still. Used the mag mirror to pluck a few of the dark chin hairs that are unfortunately growing back again and really could see the downey fuzz.

You ARE almost there! You are stronger than you know and we are all here for you.
My hair started growing back about 6 weeks after last AC, still while on Taxol.
Let me know if you'd like to have a Sassyhead to wear on your head. Be bald, be bold, be beautiful!!

Lisa - you look great and wow..congrats on the 5K!

I wanted to ask if anyone has had issues with their hair not growing back properly. It is almost a year from my last chemo and I still need to wear a wiglet as the front of my hair is short, thin and patchy. The back is very fine but looks ok, it's just the front. If I don't wear the wiglet to cover the front, I look like a 50 year old man with a receding hairline and a mullet!!. I have tried many hair regrowth shampoos and treatments but nothing really seems to work.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
