nancybel - I'm taking 5000 mg of Biotin but my MO, my RO and the infusion center nurses said not to start until my treatment was done.  They're busy trying to kill cells so I shouldn't be busy trying to grow cells.  I got the OK to go ahead once I moved to Herceptin only.

MinusTwo don't you mean 5000 mcg? I take 5mg which is the same as 5000mcg

lago - Yup, thanks.  5000 mcg.  I think we did this dance before but my brain can't hold on to it.  Sigh.

I love how this thread has taken off.

my eyebrows are now a 5:00 shadow!  They popes up over night!  Lashes are coming in too. Some are a bit wild, varied in color and texture!  Nothing matches!

Yesterday said 'my body will never be the same after this '.  Them I added. ' how exciting, can't wait to meet the new me!'

Stay positive gals!   It's all you have control over!

Nancybel,  the ladies are right, Biotin 5000 mcg is what many of us take.
I did not take anything for the first year and a half. I started taking Biotin because my hair started
falling out at that time. Taking a
shower was a stressful experience, because that is when I would see clumps of
    hair.

After I showed my oncologist how
much hair I was shedding per day, she tested me for many conditions like
thyroid, but everything was normal. After
    a few months it stopped.

BosumBlues, I hear you about the challenges of taming
your hair without heat. In the early
days I used a blow dryer everyday because I had no other way of making the top
behave. Once it got a little longer I
stopped. It was then that I decided that
I was going to let it grow.  The less heat the better.

About texture, something you cannot see in the
pictures is that I have two very distinct textures. The top hair is straight with wavy ends, the
back hair is wavy all the way to the root.
If I do a half ponytail the difference is very clear.

    About hair removal, electrolysis
is cheaper and probably more effective than laser. I found BIG price differences between spas,
so shop around. I had laser done on my
face for about $100 and electrolysis for about $50. I know this varies depending where you live.

Thanks all for the great advice.

Ms P - I'll be sure to just get things locally - but I don't think there are many places here in Charleston, SC.  Not sure if I should look at wigs or not - it's sooo hot here right now (today was over 100 degrees).

My hair is falling out all over the place (on my pillow, on my food, on my clothing) - should I just shave it tomorrow or is there some benefit to keeping some (for the fringe under hats?  It's really thinning out and I got a couple of stares today.

I went to a sporting goods type store today and they didn't have the thin beanies - so I guess I'll have to order online.  (we don't have an REI here).

I like the idea of baseball hat with a pony...that's more my style.  Anyone know where to get those?

Lago - the scarves are beautiful - what size did you get?  (not sure that I'm great at knotting but I'll try).

This hair thing is depressing.....really is.  Starting rads in a week.  The depressing thing is that I'm sure that my oncologist in CA would have helped to point me in the right direction - they are pretty hopeless here.

mom to Irish,  I live in Las Vegas....hot, hot, hot and wore a wig to work for 9 months starting May, 2013 .   Everyone is different, but the wigs they make today are very lightweight and I had no problems with them.  I googled wigs for charleston, sc.and there were several listings.  You may want to check them out as they will also sell head overs that you can try and that is also where I got my ball cap with the hair fringe.

Good luck.  This is difficult, I know. MsP

MomtoIrishQuads I prefer my scarves long so I liked the 36" length. Just tied it in the back with the tie over the part that hangs down in the middle. But I wish I had also purchased the 15' x 72". Here is a guide (linky) to tying on the site although I had my own methods. Also on the Looks Good Feel Better site they show you how too. Scroll down and click on any of the scarf stuff: linky

An easy way is just to take all the ends in the back and put one of pony tail elastics over it. It's the bundle option on the looks good feel better site under "Scarf Basics".

Deb - I found a lot of youtube tutorials on tying scarfs.  I rotate between my wig, scarfs and a hat I bought on headcovers.com.  When my hair started falling out, I buzzed it short.  Then I started getting a rash on my head and the hairs felt like needles, so I shaved all.  It felt SO GOOD!!!  I never regretted that decision.  Hugs to you ~ I know this is hard!

PS - I like to tie my scarf "tails" into a low bun.  I used to do that with my hair all the time in the summer, so to me it kind of feels like the same look.

deb, I also loved the Abbey caps. I found these about 2 months into my treatment and would have worn them earlier. They are pretty and colors are great.  I have a long thin head so it gave me some fullness in the back also got a ruffled off-white one. I also used the you tube videos on scarf tying. I actually loved tying my scarves and got a lot of compliments on my scarves. The only thing is needing to coordinate your scarf with outfits but it actually felt good to do that as it made me feel a little stylish during this difficult time. The abbey cap I'm wearing in the picture below is actually very thin and would be great for summer. There is a small ruffle like thing in the back and the material is kind of gathered. It's not flat which is nice. And no tying. Just slip it on. Got lots of compliments on it in chemo and rad. Google abbey cap, sold by turban plus.

Btw, I now have nice white hair coming in. 14 wks PFC. I was slow and thought it would never come in. Just finished rad 7/25! Yipee!! Going without any head covering for the past 2 wks!

MomtoIrishQuads...My hair started to come out on day 14 after 1st chemo like clockwork.  I shaved to about 1/4".  We didn't go all the way due to the folliculitis I had developed from the lovely steroid cocktail.  My hair continued to grow throughout.  Don't get me wrong, it is NOT thick...I never did lose my eyelashes or brows.  They have thinned, but not totally gone.  I have mostly only worn my wig to work and church.  Other than that...it has been a baseball style running hat.  They are soft and are made to wick the sweat away.  I am just not a scarf or turban kind of girl.  My family is used to be going topless at home.

Your week 7 is like my second treatment. I go every two weeks for four treatments. Not too many people have done it that way on this site. The other option was every three weeks....maybe its just my doc.

Lisa - LOVE your abbey cap.  I had my hair shaved/thinned to about 1/4 inch yesterday (got tired of hair in my food and all over the place) so I went and got a few scarves but I'd love not to have to tied them and just slip on.  I go topless at home and in the car (some of the looks that I get from passing cars are funny).  I think yesterday my daughter and I got preferential treatment in a lunch spot.....got see the good in all of this!

I kind of like going topless - it feels so cool in the South Carolina summer....but when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, it's a bit shocking but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

My head was cold last night so I need to order a few lightweight caps - going to google abbey cap.  Thanks everyone!  I have felt a little lost on the hair thing but I'm feeling better thanks to all of you.  Today I felt so good that I didn't have to go get my 2nd dose of poison and feel very lucky that it's not mandatory (although getting tired of explaining why I made the decision that I did).  I'm going to my hospital's weight loss clinic on Friday to focus on that BIG part of my estrogen issue.  Started back to yoga and hopefully Pilates next week.  I wish there was a nice health club here as it's too hot to do much outside - I miss my Bay Club in SF!

Thanks for all the great tips everyone....greatly appreciated!!

momtoirish, look into the abbey cap, easy peasy. The non ruffled ones are thin and easy to put in your purse to take with you in case you want some covering when out...like in overly air conditioned restaurants. Also sometimes I would just drape a bandana over my head at night but not tie it so it wasn't too hot, that way I could easily uncover my head when a hot flash appeared and cool off.

Homemom, I had 4 taxols also. Dose dense, every 2 weeks for 8 wks. (I also had AC before for 4 doses every 2 wks too) It's fairly common but the low dose 12 wks seems more common. It was 4 wks less than the 12 weekly treatments but it a higher dose each time. But my hair didn't start growing until 4-5 wks after finishing taxol. The 12 wk taxol people seem to start growing when on taxol. Have you looked into the May chemo thread? There will be others that ate on DD taxol too.

i am 6 months out and have about an inch all around - but worry about the texture - soft & kind of frizzy - wonder if i will have to cut it back again at some point to grow healthier hair?

Notbuyingit, Hi.  At 6 months PFC, I wanted to go topless so I had my hair stylist shape my hair so it didn't look crazy.  I found that the growth was uneven and it looked unkempt.   She was also able to help me assess the health of the hair and recommend a cut schedule.   I found a really cute pixie style and we used the next 2 haircuts to get that shape/style...about every 6 weeks.  I am in maintenance now but my hair texture is still fuzzy and she told me it might be several years before that is all gone.  She did confirm at the last cut that I was still getting more thickness as she can see the little new hairs sprouting.  I think most of us need to have our "do" shaped as we grow it out, but I know it is hard to cut off even a tiny bit in the beginning.

    Good luck, MsP

    Homemom,

My hair is thinner but i think its more due to the hysterectomy and arimidex.  My hair is fine but I used to have full eyebrows and now they are skimpy.  Could just be old age too!

I heard from the guy at the wig shop that once the hair starts to grow back you're supposed to shave it again to get the "chemo hair" off your head. Otherwise it grows back frizzy and weird. I don't know, when it starts to grow back I can't imagine intentionally buzzing it again.
