Hair Hair Hair - Another question

I'm one of the mind that it's just hair...for me! I can't say that for anyone else! I look at the alternative and figure I can live without hair for a while! I'm rocking the bald head, whether it suits me or not! I think a positive attitude is everything, and I refuse to be knocked down! I told my hubby that it's a good thing I'm not a very vain woman and could give 2 hoots what everyone else thinks! I will not buy a wig, but have purchased several head coverings since it's getting cold down here in GA! I wear them to/from work, but not in the office or stores if I should stop, and I don't wear them at home. What you see is what you get!

I'm 37 days PFC. Last night, I re-buzzed my duckling fuzz. I don't have a wig, just wear hats n beanies. I would love to go without but then it's way too cold now.
Funny thing, I was cleaning my ear after showering and I reached with my other arm (the way I used to when I had long hair). Hahahaha I dunno...chemo brain??? or just old habit. YOu tell me ;-)

Allison, you probably have a week or two to go. I got all the crazy cow licks too and then they settled down pretty quick. I went without head coverings pretty fast, just spiked the crap out of it everywhere with a bunch of hair gel.
Maybe if we could all wear a sign saying I am trying to be Jamie Lee Curtis lol? She totally rocks the super short look.

Chloesmom - that's how my hair came back! We could be twins:) And I'm on Letrozole for ILC too. My hair is now a bit longer [finger length] and the curl is looser and less poodley. So strange that it used to be straight and dark blonde with only a few greys [ok and blonder highlights]. I made the big jump to colour it finally, as I want to go grey on my terms ...NOT due to FBC. It's an ok blonde, but it seems as if it won't take the highlights as well as it used to. At least my weird little bald patch is growing in.... stress alopecia?? Great cut on you I only did a little trim so far, so use goopy product to style. My next step is to cut one side close, and let the other continue to grow more. Trvler, how did your colouring turn out?
Hair is a big deal for many of us. Those who make 'it's just hair' comments, aargh I feel like saying ok shave yours. I felt my big toenails were another reminder of my cancer -- they got thick and weird, but now almost grown through finally. When I had to be polish free for the diep surgery, and then couldn't reach them for a while after, so stared at them constantly from my recliner, a friend said something about it being just a superficial cosmetic thing...... I nearly lost it.
Deen, it was about a month that I saw some stubble, and it came in steadily and thick after that, albeit pretty grey and curly........

I'm 10 weeks PFC and still hiding under hats. Which works here where it's cold! I do have hair coming in, but it's taking its sweet time on top, and I can still see scalp. It's getting there though. It's the ugliest non-color. I used to be blond. I can't wait till there's enough that I can color.
If I had enough to look like Jamie Lee Curtis above, I'd totally rock it!

The coloring is ok. It is a little darker than I would like. We used to do highlights and lowlights so it didn't get too light and she used a shade or two lighter than the lowlight color.
Colorist says probably we can do highlights in a few months but I am not sure if I want to go that route. I might just dye my hair a lighter shade of brown or a dark blonde. It seems like highlights are kind of a waste now. I don't know. Just glad the grey is gone.
Hazelnut: I did the same thing when my hair first fell out. I had kind of long, thick hair and I used to squeeze the water out at the end of my shower. I tried to do that a couple of times before I realized. I don't think it was chemo brain. It was more habit. I never really had any chemo brain so I guess I was lucky there.

My wife is almost 8 weeks out from her last chemo and her hair is starting to come in to the point where she can take a brush and actually make it "Move" it that makes sense.. its almost past the point where it is just short/spiky now.
My question is.. anyone have their eyebrows and eyelashes start to fall out/thin really bad this far out from chemo? Its really a rock to her mental state... chemo is done.. hair starting to grow back then her eyelashes/eyebrows start to fall out ..just another kick in the butt as a reminder about having cancer I suppose

Amstar, my eyelashes fell out completely twice already since finishing chemo. The second time happened just a a 3-4 weeks ago and I'm over 6 months PFC. My eyebrows fell out completely the first time and this time they just thinned. The eyelashes started to come back quite quickly, right now I'm almost halfway to my usual length. For the eyebrows I had to use a pencil or eyebrow powder to fill them in.
After I lost my lashes and brows the first time I was using Latisse. 30-day supply lasted me about 60 days, but I haven't bought any more of it, because it's very expensive. Some women had luck with their insurance companies covering some of the cost, but not me. I think Latisse did help to grow my lashes quicker and longer the first time - something to consider maybe?

Amstar15 I lost brows and lashes three months after chemo ended. Now, six months out, they seem more normal, but some of them still curl in strange ways. I just started using an eyelash curler to deal with the ones that try to point straight down or sideways. At 5 months, some of my bottom lashes fell out again, but much less came out

I used Latisse on lashes & brows all through chemo and for several months afterwards. I decided in advance I could take loosing my hair, but not my lashes & brows so I paid the big bucks up front. Lashes & brows did thin some but I never lost them enough to have to use makeup. Sadly though - two years PFC - my lashes never grew long again. I could never use an eyelash curler now.
Funny about missing long hair. Several times a week I start to take off the barrette that holds my long hair back when I get into bed & turn off the light. Oops - no long hair, no barrette.

DeeRatz...I'm with you on the "it's only hair" comments. Have definitely decided hair is NOT over rated!

Amstar, tell your wife that is normal for a lot of us. My eyebrows comes out a lot after chemo - yes, probably around 8 - 10 weeks, but then started to come back. I am 4 months post final treatment, snd they are still coming in.....I fill in with a pencil. Eyelashes coming back too. I guess it just takes time, but, I agree, it is not easy. Hang in there......as we are all doing!

OK guys, I am so frustrated with my hair. I am now three months PFC, and I feel the Taxotere has done irreparable damage. This is my second bout of chemo, and my hair came back without a problem back in 2009. There is such a difference now.
When my hair started coming in at the end of September, I had distinct male pattern baldness. I have since shaved the sides and back of my head three times in the hope that the top will 'catch up'. If I let it grow too much, the look of it depresses me. I'd rather be totally bald.
I do however have growth on the top - about 1-2 cm, and the bald patches are not so obvious any more. Thankfully there is some coverage, but I can also see through to my scalp. It's just that it's growing soooo slowly compared to the rest, where the growth is quite good. The hair on the top is very fine, like a baby's. The crown has the shortest strands, probably under a cm.
So my question is, did anyone experience a similar growth pattern and eventually get a full head of hair? I know my hair will never be the same, and that's OK because given my advanced disease, I really needed to do this treatment. I don't have any regrets and would still have taken the chance with the Taxotere. I appreciate hearing anyone's advice/experience.

Yes, that sounds similar to hoe mine was, Calcon. Now the top has caught up and maybe taken over. I only have about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch and I'm at 20 week PFC. Now it's starting to curl! T'is a slow slow process.

Calcon, if you are still getting herceptin it is known to slow hair growth.

Yes, I am still on Herceptin and Perjeta for that matter. I'm also taking an AI, and I have read that this too can slow hair growth.
The plan is to continue with these drugs for the next five years. I have invested in some nice wigs for the interim. I would love for my hair to be long enough for a nice pixie cut.

I am not taking Herceptin and I did AC+T but that's the way my hair grew in. The sides and the back came in first and then the top. In my chemo group (March 2015) it DID seem like some of the people on your regiment took longer to have their hair come back.

Tryler: How long was it PFC when you started seeing some growth on top? (looking for some reassurance or just plain old hope here)?
0 -
so sorry for the people who did taxotere and didn't have regrowth. Who would of known about that. Lucky that mine is at my shoulders at 18 months PFC I hope there is a way to regrow for you hugs

Octogirl, I thought I would pop in here to say that I have 1/2 to 3/4 inch on top and sides and an inch in back. I finished C/T mid July, so I am 18 weeks PFT. The top is taking a bit longer, but I am happy it is coming in all over. This definitely teaches patience!

I have to go back and check my photos. I honestly don't remember.

10 weeks PFC
It was sooo sparse for along time, and then it just came in fast. (But where did that grey come from? Haha)
0 -
....Compared to 8 1/2 weeks PFC. One week makes a big difference!

Sloan that's about where I'm at 12 week. Too soo to tell about the curls just wavy right now. Maybe it's silver like tinsel.
0 -
Same here, also about 12 weeks. Maybe a little longer on the top. Sloan, you have gorgeous eyes!

Sloan: Mind if I ask your age? Mine came in MUCH grayer than I thought it would. Silver. I thought the underlying color had more warmth, too. It used to. I just colored it last week to cover the grey but I am still wearing my wig.
0 -
Sloan- thanks for posting pics. I am 7 weeks PFC and I am guessing I have the same amount of hair as you would have had at that point. Mine seems to be grayer too. I think this is in part due to the fact that there is still some of the colorless chemo fuzz in with my darker hair.
I have been going hatless at the gym, it is just way to hot to be wearing a hat. It's not like everybody doesn't know anyway that I have no(very little) hair. Nobody seems bothered by it. It is just me that it bugs. As soon as it is long enough to color, I will be doing that and owning my new hairdo. My wig itches me like crazy now when I wear it. I have mostly been wearing a hat when I go out.
Grow silver tinsel, grow! That is my Christmas wish.....for hair! I hope Santa can deliver.0 -
trvler and Dee - I'm 50 (51 in Jan). Mine was ALL grey at first. The new hair is darker, and even today I was thinking it's even darker than the pic I took. The grey ones are the wirey ones that sick up all over the place. Did you notice that, too? The greys were rhe strafglers leftover from chemo. The new ones are soft!

Just a tip for you ladies like me who are still wearing a wig. Mine is synthetic and i thought i just had to live with the rattyness that it gets.. or take it to the place i bought it and have them "deep condition" it for a price of course.... I saw a youtube video of a gal steaming hers.... IT WORKS!!! I did it last night and my wig looks brand new! No more fuzzies at the ends! You can steam it and comb it at the same time and it works perfect!! I am kinda ticked that the place i bought it from did not tell me this. Of course they want me to come back in and pay for them to do it!!!

I wash my wig in a little bit of baking soda warm water, comb gently with a wide-tooth comb, and then dry it on an upside down vase. I was told that heat frim the oven and steam from cooking makes it frizzy, so I cook in a hat.
I "Febreezed" my wig this AM because I forgot to rinse it last night, and it smells so fresh!
