    Midwest Laura Good for you!!

docmama and Dara looking terrific!! (You have more hair in a square inch than I have on my entire head.) My thin wispy hair is barely acceptable, and I just purchased a new wig as a mother's day gift for myself. My baseball caps are getting good use when not wearing the wig!

Dara--love those curls! You look adorable!!! Congratulations to everyone who is brave enough to get rid of the wigs! I'm not that confident. My family is telling me it's time and so is my hair dresser. Just can't do it. The wig is getting more uncomfortable every day and I just hate wearing it, but I think I hate the way I look without it more. My hair is about 1 1/4" in most places except the top which half of it is barely 1/2" long. It's straight as a stick. Top is very thin and my scalp still shows. Our beach vacation is in less than a month now. Still considering cancelling it. I'm not trying to be a whiner here but I look just plain awful with my hair in it's current state and I'm finding that it's starting to control what I do or don't do.

seq, - dont cancel the trip!! I know how you feel about your hair, - but wear a cute hat or cap (which you should wear in the sun anyway) and bring along your wig, just in case!

Thank you to everyone for their support! I knew I could count on you ladies for a pat on the back.

Dara: virtual high-5 to you. We both found a great way to celebrate out Mothers Day weekend.

Seq: Please don't cancel that trip. You need some time away. Time away from this nightmare that we are all having. Going to a place where you can be anonymous may be just what you need. A place where it doesn't matter what people think. A place where you and your family can just be yourselves. A place where you can focus your eyes on the ocean instead of the mirror.

We all have little moments of bravery. Those moments are as unique as the person who's facing the fight. I pray that we all have at least one moment this week that we can each look back on and say, "It was hard, but I did it. Good job, me!" It doesn't matter what that moment is about. It only matter that you do it.

My hair started growing one month after I finished treatment. I am averaging 1/2 inch month growth. Very slow process but it's thick and curly. Hang in there sister we will all get there!!! BTW hating the wig, ditched it months ago

Seq, doesn't a beach vacation call for a hat to protect one's skin from the sun? Or maybe a cotton bandanna that would still be cooler then a wig?

I think I'm a bit of an oddball because I went around "naked noggin" unless I was cold and didn't feel self conscious about it. Mind you, I felt lousy during chemo and was neutropenic following 3 of 4 AC treatments so rarely left the house except to go to medical appointments. I got a wig, but it looked so horribly fake that even my best friend had trouble hiding her reaction and it gave me a headache within an hour. Now that my hair is growing out, I can tell it's going to be very challenging and think I'll be forced to don some kind of headgear. That's bad timing given that it will soon be hotter than Hades in Texas, I'm having terrible hot flashes despite being triple negative and I don't cope with heat well.

Thanks for your support everyone. After I posted earlier today my travel agent friend called me to say all of our travel documents are in. Made this trip seem very real. Still so self conscious about my hair. Then someone told me that to avoid problems at airport security I need to wear my wig so I look like my passport picture then take it off before boarding the plane. Just great! Has anyone had any trouble with not wearing their wig through security. Apparently hats aren't allowed through security and they have to be removed so it's a wig or nothing. Sorry to sound whiny about something, in the grand scheme of things, is as unimportant as vanity, but gosh, this hair ordeal has been torture to me.

I've gone through security looking totally different than my passport, inapril 2016 to be exact. My passport photo was the same as my nexus photo. Long braided hair. Yet in April 2016 I had 1/4 inch of hair on my head. Don't worry about that. People cut their hair. All the time. My new passport photo is from nov 2016 and I have the curls you see in my avatar. I'm sure in 2019 it will be totally different again. Go. Take some YOU time and have fun fun fun!

I travel for our business although not as often as I use to.

I have a letter from my Oncologist stating my cancer diagnosis and where my port is located.

I had a letter from my Plastic Surgeon stating I had tissue expanders (those are gone now since I have had reconstruction).

These were simply "to whom it may concern" on my doctors' letterhead stationary. You can go to the TSA website for additional guidance.

When I checked in at Delta the first time I flew after all this happened, I started to cry. I explained to the agent what had happened and I was afraid to go thru security with TSA, She told the other agents that she was going to walk me to TSA. Once there she explained my condition.

Because I was pre-screened (this appears at the bottom of the boarding pass) TSA had me simply walk thru the scanner. One TSA male agent carried my bag for me and I didn't even have to open my lap top.

BTW, I always use my passport for identification when flying. I look nothing like the picture anymore!

There are some really caring people in the world.

So ...seq24 ...have a ball on vacation!

Just something to share....I was talking to my hairdresser today. I have an appointment at the beginning of June for my second coloring. She told me that there is a product called Roux Fanci Full mousse. It's a tinted mousse that comes in several colors that provides temporary color for grey roots or for use in between coloring. It washes out when shampooing and supposedly makes hair look and feel much thicker. Might be a great product for those of us with this very fine and thin chemo hair and to cover that pesky grey. Has anyone used this? They sell it at Sally Beauty and it is buy 1 get 1 free right now. I'm going to try it I think.

Seq, I went through airport security last month with a totally bald head and no brows or lashes while my drivers license photo had fairly thick hair since it's from several years ago. I think screeners are being trained to be more sensitive to travelers with health issues.

Titanium clips should be ok. I have 3 titanium dental implants and never set off a metal detector at the airport or anywhere else.

Lyn--thanks! I won't worry so much about security then. Hopefully the TSA guys are sensitive to us and won't give us a hassle because we look different.

KB--I was wondering the same thing about the surgical clips. I think I have several.

The surgical clips don't set off any alarms. I flew with mine.

We went to a fine dining restaurant the other night. I did not wear a hat or wig. The waitress never gave me eye contact and basically acted like I wasn't there. I was tired and had a headache. She really pissed me off! Her tip or should I say lack of it reflected it too. I am so tired of worrying about others! I did nothing to deserve this nor am contagious. I for one am going to take a stand for myself!

Hi all! Just had to share this. I was talking to my hair dresser the other day. I have an appointment with her in 2 weeks to have my hair colored for the second time. In the meantime I'm trying really hard to get the guts to go in public without the wig. My hair is coming back with about 100 times more grey than I had before. She recommended to me a product called Roux Fanci Full mousse. It's a color tinted mousse that is not harmful to the hair, covers the grey and washes out. They sell it at Sally Beauty (buy 1 get 1 free until the end of June too!) and it comes in several colors. I got some last night and it is wonderful! Grey is gone and my hair looks thicker too. It makes my hair kind of stiff but once dry I just combed through it and it was fine. Now to find the courage to ditch the wig. Yikes!!

This is my first time posting in this thread. I have been so stressed about my hair because of all the horrible things I heard about Taxotere. I am 7 weeks PFC and I'm not sure if this is good growth or not but at least it's better than it was three weeks ago. Lol Most of my hair is white or clear - something I find fascinating. It's like glass. You can see right through it to my scalp. It is definitely growing super slowly. I'm still not comfortable going without my chemo cap in public yet, but I am completely topless at home. Before BC, my hair was dark brown with a lot of white. As soon as it grows a little longer, I'm ditching the caps for good! imageimage

lohoff-I know what you mean about the taxotere- I had that also and read where some peoples hair did not grow back. I was so happy and excited to see hair start growing. I am about at the same stage as you and look about the same except yours looks better on the sides than mine. Mine at first was looked white or clear but now is dark and looks kinda like a 5 o'clock shadow.

lohoff--your hair looks about like mine did at 7 weeks pfc. The color will start to come back soon. I am a very impatient person to start with and this hair growth thing is driving me crazy!! I'm trying to get the courage to go without the wig. Today I'm 17 weeks pfc. My family says it's time to ditch the wig. I'll post photos later today or tomorrow of the current state of my hair. I'm not too impressed with it but it's better than it was.

All of a sudden, I'm finding my hair getting so much thicker, and also growing. I colored it a few weeks ago, using Madison Reed color with no harsh chemicals etc. I can already see the roots growing with the one exception of the very front where bangs would grow. There's absolutely no change there! So maddening since that is the one place I need the hair to grow. I've also gone back to using the Jamaican Black castor oil at night to try to strengthen the hair. This certainly is a process! And one that sucks!

    Dara,

How are you handling the inconsistent re-growth?

Are you just owning it, or is there a special product you are using for your particular situation?

In terms of styling perhaps? A wig? A scarf?

    Thanks!

I wonder if posts are less as hair grows more. I have less than 1/8th of an inch all over my head and feel fortunate that it seems to be coming in a uniform manner. I shedded the head coverings on Easter and am not going back. We are 90 degrees here today in Philly so am pleased I made this choice. I do wear a hat in the sun but remove it when uncomfortable or inside. I get less looks than I did when my head was covered but at this point, I really don't care. Strangers who stare don't have a clue and for their sake, I hope they never do. But with the prevalence of this disease, they are likely to bump up against it in their lifetime, if not directly, then indirectly. You all have to do what makes you comfortable at your own pace but I will say this, none of us have a thing to be ashamed of
