DaraB, I go to a salon to color my hair. All I know is it's an Aveda salon. My hair is past my shoulders and I have had many hair cuts to even it out. My hair actually started growing back when I was still doing chemo. I know it's the AI's but I don't have a choice with that.

Mistyeyes, I am doing an OK job hiding just how thin it is but I am worried it will get worse. If it does I think I will be forced to wear a hair piece, but I really don't want to.

Oasis2016, I tried wearing a wig at first but I felt like it looked bad and it hurt my head. I wore my cap for pretty much the entire time. I did get some looks and insensitive comments, but for the most part people just didn't care. For me I needed to be confortable and I didn't care if anyone had a problem with it. You need to be happy and put yourself first.

Metoo14 you are right. The weather is just too hot for me. I am ready to face the public with my super short and thin hair. They are still hair nonetheless. But i will wear a cap as I looked like a man if I didnt put on makeup. My little girl said i got a boy's haircut.

Dianarose your hair is so long! Mine is like a boy's slope cut at the back.

diana, that is looking very nice.

I still have a long way to go. I've noticed friends' pics on FB where their new grandbabies have more hair than I do. By a lot, eek.

But it is slowly slowly growing a bit.

I have a question. My hair is bald and some 1/16 th on an inch in spots totally gray with some brown left... I look like a bald baby chick owl. Do I just shave it or hold on to it and cut the bad chemo damage ends off when it finally comes back? I have chemo rash... red spots that crop up all over... oh the joys of chemo. Anyway they said not to shave it completely until in finish chemo and hopefully the rash will stop. Four more weekly chemos left before rads. What should I do

I had that too and glad I didn't shave it. It really helps fill in when the other hair starts to grow.

Danix5- I still have a rash on my feet. They finally called in a prescription for a steroid ointment and it is slowly getting better. Mine got little blisters.

dianarose- so you advise leave the little that I have? I think that's the best idea at this point. It's still falling out I am in week 8 of 12. So it might be a mute point but I will hold onto the baby owl hair!😘 I look at my picture taken in 2016 and can't believe this has happened again 😩😢

imageDanix- this was my hair before chemo. I am sure it won't come back like this because I am on Ibrance and Faslodex. This is my second time losing my hair too. Really sucks

Danix, once my hair fuzz started to grow back, I just let it do it's thing. The gray/ translucent hair eventually grew out. I'm now about to go ahead and color my hair, but still not ready to go bare-headed. I'm on letrolzole, but have also tried extremes tan and arimidex (so all 3 available) and they said hair thinning can be a side effect of all of them. Damned if we do and damned if we don't! My top and bang area is the slowest growing.

Great growth pic Diana. Have you had it trimmed? It's going in so evenly. I hate the thought of trimming any of the hair I have, but think it's almost time to even things up a little.

Finished Taxol on April 10, and my hair started coming back fuzzy beginning of April. However, my hair is coming back on my sides and back, but my top has hair with some bald spots. Will all of my hair come back, or am I also going to have a receding hair line to deal with. Fighting breast cancer for a second time and now I fear being permanently bald, boobless and worrying about having a tree trunk for an arm.

But right now, the vain person in me just wants hair and it to come back evenly, which it isn't.

Not to mention my hair is really gray - I am curious to know if the gray is permanent because I was brown before the chemo

Flomom--your hair is coming back exactly the way mine is. I finished chemo on Jan 20. It was growing before I finished and like you it was grey--very grey in fact. It was awful because I only had a few strands of grey before but that 's it. I had it colored in March as soon as I got the OK from my MO. The back and right side came in nicely before the left side. The top is still very thin and very short. But the interesting thing is that in the month since I had it colored I know it has grown and I see no more grey coming in. Not even the roots. I am happy for that. If you scroll back a few pages I have posted photos of my hair progress all along. Today marks 13 weeks PFC. It's not growing near fast enough for me and I don't dare go without a wig but it's definitely better than it was at first. I'm still pretty disappointed in it and think it looks awful as I figured I would have much more than this by now. 13 weeks is a long time.

This is what it looks like now.

I'm so happy to read everyone's posts! I had the same question as Danix-- should I shave this baby chick hair. I actually think I look like an old bald man, with the hair texture of a sheep-- baaaaa!

After reading, it sounds like I should leave it alone. I'm also going to try some of that hair color recommended.

Diana, I sighed when I saw your hair. I would like mine to look like that. I'm 7 weeks out, and feel old and ugly.

Wigs make me hot too, so I wear a cap when I'm out. Now the ugly grey hair is starting to show by my ears, so I'm a bit self-conscious. Thanks for posting, Ladies! So nice to know I'm not alone in this. :D

I think most deal with the sides and back coming in faster than the top. This was my hair early on.image

seq24 my hair is shorter and thinner than yours at the back. I started wearing a cap and sunglasses out without my wig. Trying to look sporty in this hot weather haha.

Oasis--you're much braver than me. I barely made it to the back yard last weekend in a cap. I was always on the lookout for the neighbors so I could hide. I find myself looking at every woman's hair that I see. Trying to find someone who has hair that looks like mine. I saw someone today who had shorter sides and back the the top was very long and thick and beautiful. Definitely not a cancer patient. I am still really struggling with this hair business. I'm tired of looking like this.

Seq totally understand why you want to avoid the neighbours. Me too. That's why I need my sunglasses when I go out in the day.

It is only evening time when I feel I look funny wearing sunglasses out and rather prefer to stay at home.

    Good Mornign All,

I mix 1 cup coconu oil (the kind you cook with), one cup jojoba oil (@ Amazon.com by Dr. Adorable), and 1/2 castor oil (from a local drug store).

I apply this to my hair at night. Yes, my pillow cases are a mess.

I got the recipe from my barber. I was hesitant to post when I first did this because I really didn't t know if this would help my hair. My hair seems to have gotten a lot thicker and darker since using this mixture.

I also use the mixture at the crown on my husband's head where he has hair loss. His hair is growing back!

Vicky, do you apply every night? I was using the castor oil and then a couple of people mentioned that one can clog the hair follicles so I quit using it daily. I assume you wash your hair every morning?

Just an FYI; offering because I had no idea so maybe there are others that are also unaware. My second AC chemo is Wed and likely will lose my hair right after that. I have caps ready but no plans for a wig. I'm probably going to be okay with bald most of the time. My daughter wanted me to do the wig things as "there are so many cute, cool wigs out there now." Well, I just learned that insurance pays for one wig (not sure of any limitations yet). God, who knew!? Only yesterday was I able to face my bill/insurance issues and came across this. I'm going to do that now. My daughter then said, "you can get a wig that looks like your own hair." Why the hell would I do that!? Nope, I'm doing something different and fun and that I'd never do to my own hair.

Yes, DaraB, every night and I shampoo in the morning. My barber said equal parts of each but I too read about the castor oil clogging pours so I justuse 1/2 of that.

If you use gel caps make sure you use dry ice to really freeze them.

Coach Vicky, I'm not sure what that means. I don't know what gel caps are. Is that something about a wig or is that the cold packs used to try to retain hair during chemo?

JLBinPDX, I don't recall exactly but I think with my policy they paid up to a credit of $300 or $350 toward a "cranial prosthesis" for chemo-induced alopecia, per my MO's Rx form. The one I got cost more than that, for a nice quality synthetic one which was styled to look somewhat like my hair style pre-chemo. I've worn it at work and for outings for going on 9 months now, and with at least a month or two before my own hair will be back enough to be presentable. So getting my $$ worth out of the wig cost, imo.

Coach Vickey, if by "gel caps" you mean the freeze things used during chemo to try to retain at least some of your hair, that's not for me. I briefly looked into that and quickly decided the hassle, having to have someone there repacking, and possible high expense were not worth it to me. I don't even have anyone drive me to or from chemo so asking someone to do all that work during chemo is just not my thing. My friend says I'll be a hot Sinead O'Conner and I'm going to see how I am about that. It's coming, likely, in just a few days. I live in Portland, Oregon anyway so looking a little different is pretty normal.

Mislill, a wig just sounded like too much trouble to me, but the insurance coverage probably will push me into one at least. And my daughter really wants to be a part of it so that just seems like an okay thing. I have basic, mousy brown hair so I'm thinking a few shades lighter, brighter, happier. I'm kinda excited a bit now.

I also didn't feel up to tackling the cold cap idea, although i have read it can be somewhat effective. Apart from the inconvenience, I really hate being cold lol.

The wig I got is reasonably real looking (except in sunlight, where I'm fairly sure the synthetic must be too shiny), and it has a partial 'lace' lining that is sheer and comfortable. I haven't had much difficulty wearing it once I got used to the idea initially. But I only use it for work, social events, church, etc. - for routine days at home, clinic days, or run out for errands, just go with a scarf/cap.

I have some travel coming up, not sure what I will do there. Probably bring all the options with me and see what feels right for any given activity.

Just something to share as far as traveling with our head coverings. A friend who is a travel agent and who also recently went through chemo traveled a month or so ago. She said that airport security will not allow anyone wearing a hat to go through security without removing it. She said she wore her wig to get through security then went in the bathroom, took it off and put on her hat so she could me more comfortable for the flight. I'm so glad she told me this as we're traveling in June and if I don't have enough hair to go without the wig by then I'll have to do the same.
