I colored my hair with shades eq semi permanent color to cover the grey today. I know you are supposed to wait but the combo of so short and grey was really bumming me out. It's red. It feels better.

Moth- I colored as soon as it was long enough to see all the grey. The top picture where my hair is the shortest is not long after I colored it for the first time. Mine grew back all grey too and I was not expecting it at all. My colorist did a gentle single process first with a darker color than I was used to and it took just fine. As it grew she'd go lighter and eventually started adding highlights. Last time I had it colored I did a single process and half head highlights at same time. Back to using same products we used to useprior to chemo.

imageThis is 15 weeks PFC....my hair took ages to grow but now it is coming in fast. I didn’t have anything at all at 9 weeks PFC!

Leesa, love your progress pics! You are looking fantastic.

Hi all, love the inspiring pics that my hair will grow back (and so many cute short styles) but a question - did anyone / does anyone have a patch of a different color? I'm about 10wks PFC and 1 wk post rads and getting a dark fuzz (hooray!) but with a white patch about the size of a half dollar right on the top of my head. My hair was salt and pepper before but consistent. Hoping it evens out!

Omg Wink that's amazing. It's coming in nice and thick!! So happy for you! Big growth in a short period of time.

I decided that since my hair just keeps growing out instead of down, time to consult with an expert. I had visions of just growing my hair out to its previous mid-back length with little to no haircuts.

I’m lucky my chemo curls aren’t dry but they are an unruly bush. So my original plan is just Not-happeningimage. Here I am 11 months PFC. Mushroom head!

CBK pretty sure I’m going to end up in the same boat as you a few months down the line! I’m only 5 months PFC but it’s extremely thick, wavy and growing UP!! My husband calls it my mini afro..lol. Here’s a recent pic.

I’m thankful I have hair, and my plan was to grow it out as long as possible til the end of the year then go to my hairdresser to see what she could do with it...but I’m not sure she WILL be able to do anything with it! I eagerly await your hair updates 😊

    UH HUH STEPH74!!

I know I was just so happy to have hair at first, I was like WOHOO! I also assumed at this juncture it would get weighed down a bit with length and be a bit more manageable.

I'm afraid to do anything drastic like chemical straightening....I know people without chemo-curls that have had terrible results; including massive breakage to their already LONG LOCKS. I know there must be some natural ways to relax the curl a bit..... I don't mind curl, but this just this is outrageous!

Did you lose all your hair on Cytoxan/Taxotere? It's growing in nicely and your brows are beautiful!! I will keep you posted on what I find out next week!

Rwns- I missed your note.... thank you!!

They say you are supposed to wait 5-6 months so your follicles can come back in all the way but I was miserable being gray so just went for it at 12 weeks. Its doing fine - thickening up and its feeling healthy enough. I used Framisi I bought off of Amazon. Its pricey but very low ammonia. I mixed their lever 6 neutral and gold brown half and half. I bought both tubes and the developer. I only used a quarter tube of both because I have so little hair. So I probably have a few more applications.

urdrago, I used a semi permanent colour on mine last week (15 weeks PFC) because it came in grey and white and uneven in colour. It worked reasonably well, but I feel like my hair didn’t take the colour like it normally would. Next time I would leave on for a few more minutes! Made me feel good to do it though.

Mama Oz, Steph and CBK looking great!

CBK yep...TC chemo did my hair in! I can’t take all the credit for my brows though...I had powder brows done over the summer (similar to microblading). Though now my brows are a lot thicker than before..at least the permanent makeup fills in the gaps. I too thought about the straightener idea (keratin, etc) but I don’t want to do more harm than good. Either way I plan to see my hairdresser at the end of December and hope for the best

I also colored my hair around the 12 week mark because it was sooo grey! My dr said go for it, so I did. Just used the John Frieda brand from Target (def. was not wanting to spend a lot of money). It’s a foam and has good coverage. The grey is coming in again now so I’m thinking of doing that once more before actually going to my hairdresser.

Steph74- Brows look great, do you have to go back for a lot of maintenance with powder brows? Mine grew back nicely after taxol took them all but they are still thin and mixed with grey....YIKES!!

Urdrago- I waited until 51/2 months to color, but I was still wearing wigs. My hair was super resistant to color and actually repelled it. After a very expensive and poor result professional dye job, my friend and I went with ammonia-free Naturtint. Love this color product, better than any professional dye job I have had in years. Covers gray well, but I had to "hit it" a multiple times to get full coverage. I don't know why but some people experience this repel of color after chemo!!

Wink- you are probably experiencing that chemo repel of color..... I'm telling you I colored my hair like at least four times before I got the result I wanted. Thanks to a good friend and Naturtint I finally got my copper back!!

CBK-it depends on your skin and level of sun exposure, etc. but typically you only need touch ups every couple years. I love not having to fill in my brows every day

urdrago, I did a box color close to my original but a little lighter/warmer about 5 months pfc. I don’t have much grey but what I have was suddenly very noticeable.

Aww thanks Leesa. I'm hoping I can tame the beast a little until it grows more. Super frustrating stage of chemo-curls. I never had hair like this.

Steph74- Yes, he gave me a lot of advice. He trimmed the back up and cut into it because it is much longer than the rest of my lid. He took off some dry ends in the front. Overall it was a trim. Well I guess I don't actually have enough to cut. Omg after a year this is all I have to show??

    1. Shampoo is very important. Don't shampoo very often. Like if you can help it once a week. Use a moisturizing shampoo that is not alkaline in nature. Shampoo with conditioner in between shampoos if need be. Use Color treated shampoos or those specific to curly hair are good. Stay away from drugstore brands.

2 Moisture, moisture, moisture. After shampooing and conditioning (leave ins are good) place an oil product on hair and a moisturizing curl creme. He said to stay away from mousse and gels.

    3. Avoid blow drying and allow hair to mostly air dry. When hair is wet fresh out of shower, use an old T-shirt to scrunch the hair to get water out and define curls before placing on product.

    4. When hair is almost fully air dried, you can diffuse or use a ceramic barreled round brush with boar brissels to create softer curls. I bought one that was super small like 1-1/2 inch barrel. It's like using a curling iron on hair.

He didn't specify specific products to use but I will give you a few that I like so far. My hair although thick as hell, the individual strands are fine. I like Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo, Beautiful Curls activating leave-in conditioner, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Beautiful Curls Activating Creme, Agidar Argan Oil, Ouidid heat and humidity gel (I know a gel but it's from a curl line and it's honestly the only product that I've tried in that line I like). I also use Beautiful Curls Reviving Tonic spray and Cantu Comback Curl revitalizor.

Definitely deep condition once a week. I actually use organic black castor oil once a week for hair and scalp. It's messy but it leaves the hair and scalp so healthy and definitely relaxes the curl. I put it on for a few hours or overnite with a terry lined shower cap on. I'm always changing up what deep conditioner I use.

He was completely against me straightening the curl because he just liked it-Haha glad someone does! But did say if I tired of the curl by summer he would do Keratin treatment on it and it would not damage my hair and the curl would return. Stay far away from other harsher straightening options.

He felt that my curl was to stay 😱 I say no way.... I guess time is to tell!

Is that more than you wanted to know? Be in touch!!

    K

CBK thank you sooo much, that is incredibly helpful! I am washing mine every day so that’s the first thing I’m going to stop doing. I made note of your products as well and will look for them next time I go shopping.

I will let you know how it goes. I still have about one more month to go (and grow.. lol) before my hair appointment but since I doubt my stylist will be able to get rid of the curl I wanted to get a head start on how to take care of them.

    Thanks again!!

Steph 74 I forgot to mention I love love love Aveda Madder Root Conditioner. Keeps my red nice and vibrant but also keeps curls really moist too. I think there is one for brown hair too. If you have a store near you they love to give out samples to try.

I’m going try some of their curly products too as I run out, keep you posted. I love their cherry bark conditioner too!

You can get rid of curl with a keratin treatment. I just chose to leave it alone now, I hate me in short hair. Straight isn’t going to make me any happier at this length so I’m just leaving it be.

Can’t wait to hear what you and your hair stylist decide......Happy Thanksgiving!!!

My scalp is finally gone! It took a lot longer than I expected to fill in. It seems like just when my legs and pits started to grow in that my head decided it was time to really grow. I have a little 1/2 inch pixie. I still have to pencil my brows and lashes because they are still sparse. I wash it every day and condition it with Nioxin. I hope its mild enough for that. I colored it warm brown two weeks ago to cover the grey and am actually enjoying it finally. When the bang gets to an inch I plan to bleach it platinum. That will be five months so I think my follicles will be up for it. I wish I had chemo curl. Mine is its bone straight with cowlicks in all the wrong places. I still cant stop rubbing my head. It has almost become a nervous tic I have to make myself stop.

    Rachael

I don't think my hair really started to curl until about 4 or 5 months PFC. Earlier than that it was coming in straight!!!

I used Nioxin but just until the follicles opened up. I can't wait to see your inch long platinum blonde creation!!'

Rub that lid all you want! It's yours now!

CBK you look great!! My hair is finally long enough that I am definitely getting the chemo curls and not too happy about it. Larger curls would be good but these little ones will turn into poodle hair so I’m thinking about keeping it super short until something closer to my old hair comes back (which I *think* is a thing, right?). Anyway—I had my first haircut last week (18 weeks PFC). She didn’t do much but trimmed around my ears, side and back a bit. She also kept saying, “We’ll have so much more to work with every time you come back!” Anyway—I sent this pic to my kids and said I was *not* happy about my stupid hair.
