Karen, I am so sorry for your loss.

Sweet, you did great! Your daughter will quit when she is ready, can't talk someone into quitting. I was talked into quitting years ago so to make people happy I "quit" but only when they weren't around. It is so much better to really quit even if it takes a little longer.

Regina, I'm sorry about the new diagnosis. You are strong and will get thru this to.

18 days for me, and so far so good.

I sent out a message to the wrong forum, and firefox wont let me copy and paste. Yell

Anyway, off to TX #5 of 6 TCH so I may not be very active for the next few days. But I will check in when I can.

I promise not to smoke, even thought I want to right now. I will be so glad when this is all over and I can stop complaining to my boyfriend all the time. Seem like everything that comes out of my mouth is a complaint about how I feel. I'm looking forward to this being over and I can tell him, the tomatoes are grownin, the grass is green, It's WARM outside, I feel GOOD, ect.

    Sweet,

It is really hard to not complain when you just feel like crap!  I'm sure your boyfriend understands..

Hope you sail through those last 2 treatments with minimal side effects!   Spring is just around the corner and you'll be done just in time!

Yes, it is getting easier...since I said that of course I will be craving one in a few minutes LOL.

No cravings yesterday or today.  Also, I find that I am in a better mood and have more energy for my children, don't know if its because I finished chemo or because of the not smoking.  I find myself not hoping for a few minutes away from them so I could have one.

    Basia,

Glad to hear things are going well! The better mood and energy is most likely a combination of your strength returning after chemo and the intial nicotine withdrawal "fog" starting to lift!!!

One of my major reasons for wanting to quit smoking was how much I was scheduling my life around smoking!  It DOES feel so good to not have to do that anymore!

    Keep up the good work!

I scheduled my life around it too, had to have at least 2 packs in the fridge in order to feel OK.  Unbelieveable how that white cylinder ruled our lives.

    karen333,

Oh yes... The scary feeling knowing that you are low on cigarettes and they may not last till tomorrow, especially if bad weather was expected!! So nice to not have to care...

    Still thinking about you!

I was looking at my surgical report (from the ooph) and it said "patient is a blah, blah woman, blah, blah ... who smokes a half pack a day..." I underlined that! When I go see the doctor again, I'm going to make sure he updates his records to note that I am a NON-SMOKER Wink

Hang in there everybody. One day at a time, we can get there.

    LadyinBamaI {{hugs}} on your diagnosis.

I went for a PETscan Tuesday and of course I had to complete all the obligatory paperwork.  However, I did stop to savor the check off box for NO in the Do you smoke? portion of the questionnaire.  There was also follow up questions about length of time and everything.  I think I'm going to add the non-smoking note/date to the list I've created for the doctor questionnaires (don't we all have the on-going list of meds and tests for completing the same forms over and over?).

Sweet I've got my last chemo on Tuesday, we're almost there!

I'm still trying to schedule an appointment with the rads doctor (he needed the PETscan before I could even schedule an appointment) so the journey continues but at least my body will be able to begin the recovery from the chemo.  I'm looking forward to feeling the positive effects of quitting smoking!

    Kal, and others.

I kinda discussed with my Dr and NP about having my ovaries removed... (due to my moms history with a blood clot that killed her, and tamox having that as a side effect) From what I remember my grandmother on my fathers side had "some sort" of GYN cancer, but by the time they discovered it, it had eaten away at most of her insides and gave her 3 weeks to live, and it was over that fast, my aunt seems to remember it being stomach cancer.  So I asked if I should just have it all removed to be safe. I now have to hope my favorite GYN accepts medicaid.

I dont see the purpose of leaving the uterus there, if it could have been where my grandmothers cancer began. Once the ovary's are out, the uterus serves no purpose correct??

BTW, bad morning, was woke up to a fax machine calling the house about 8 times in a row, and boyfriend of course insisting I dont know what a fax machine sounds like and sitting here once again trying to prove me wrong.... gotta get that dredded shot today, and really wanting a cigarette right now. I hate that he always has to be right and was starting on me before I could even get the patch on! Yell

I hate it, someone trying to win an arguement you know you are right on, especially before I have a chance to get that first cup of coffee down.  When I was principal of a residential school, everyone knew not to ask a complicated but stupid question before 9 AM.  Don't let him drive you to a cigarette, sweet.

Im not, He shut up, and the coffee and patch kicked in. Laughing

Off to get that dreaded shot. Im asking for percocet. Dr said before that it din't work for that type of pain, but that is BS, I took some left overs from surgery last shot and it really did help the bone pain, so I am asking the NP to write for just a couple. Wish me luck.

Hi everyone. I don't post too much, but I logged on and saw this thread up front.  I have set my quit date for 3/8. I started Chantix on MOnday.  This will be like the 20th time I've tried quitting.  I have my 3 month follow-up on 3/10.  I NEED to quit.  My whole family wants me to quit and especially my 9 yo son.  I've been hiding it for months but can no longer.  I thought I would quit after my treatment was over, but I continue using any other excuse I can come up with. I do WANT to quit, and know I NEED to quit, I just needed to be strong and actually set a date, so I did.  Wish me luck and congats to all of you who have succeeded, you are very strong!  Sandra

greenacres, you can do it, I quit after 30+ yrs. smoking.  I never thought I could do it, but I am a little over a month without a cig.  They don't even smell good anymore.  My grandchildren were a big factor in my quiting, they are 12 and 13, they were being affected by the second hand smoke, my lack of breath in walking, playing, and the transfer of the cig smoke to their clothes.  They are so proud of their Nini.  We are all here to support you.  Karen

    Sweet,

The decision of to have a hysterectomy or not is one that has entered my mind as well.  Big decision!  Not sure on the answer to if the uterus serves any purpose once the ovaries are gone.  I haven't delved into it in that much detail yet.

I'm hoping your boyfriend realises how lucky he is that you didn't kill him...lol!!  He should know better than to pick a fight with someone who is tired and caffeine and nicotine deprived!!! Wink

Glad to hear your patch kicked in and you felt better! Hope your shot went well and that you have taken a Percoset and are laying on the couch relaxing!

    Welcome greenacres!!!

You have already taken a huge step by wanting to quit and getting a quit date in place!!

I smoked for over 30 years when I quit and, in addition to the money, one of my big motivators was my son (he was 16 at the time).  He wanted me to quit soooooo bad and I had told him over and over that I would and then.... didn't!  Finally I said I was going to quit on Jan1 (yep, stroke of midnight, a bit of a drama queen!) and... didn't.  I will NEVER forget that look of disappointment on his face when he saw me still smoking.

I quit for good on January 18, 2010 when the timing was right for me!  The key is you have to want to quit for you.  Even though we love our children, quitting for them can NOT be your only reason.  You have to WANT it and want it DEEPLY, for you!!

If you haven't already, take some time to go back and read a bit on this thread.  There are lots of great ideas plus, it'll get you familiar with some of the ladies here!  They are a really a super bunch!!

One last thing... VJSL8 who posts here from time to time is a smoking cessation professional.  She has graciously agreed to share the workbook that she uses for her classes, at no charge, to any woman from this thread that requests it!  It is really packed with lots of information.  All you have to do is send her an e-mail and she will e-mail you a copy.  I can go back and find her e-mail address if you need me to!

Welcome aboard.  Look forward to hearing more from you soon!

Yes Jennifer, I took my percocet... LOL. I actually had to make them write me a script today. My onc told me before it doesnt work for this type of pain, so I told the nurse today YES IT DOES! That I had some left from surgery, I took it last time and it worked. They only gave me 5mg, so I popped 2. Im feeling so good so far I just cleaned up the kitchen. I can feel the taste changes starting just a little bit, but hoping that sucking on ice during my infusion will make it at least not so bad.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Kristy, glad you are resting comfortably, thank goodness for pharmaceuticals (Sp?)  Seaside, my grandchildren have a gradma and a Nini, all their close friends call me Nini too!  We are all doing well without cigarettes.  How strange that something that governed our lives should just evaporate into nothingness  Bama and kal, wasn't it great to check the non-smoker box.  Never thought I would do it.  Karen

    Karen,

"How strange that something that governed our lives should just evaporate into nothingness"

Truer words were never spoken!!  When you first quit, not smoking occupies pretty much all of your thoughts.  It fades little, by little, and day by day, until you barely think about it other than for a fleeting thought!  And you do wonder 'What the heck was the big deal??'...

Early on you don't believe that it will happen (I know I didn't), BUT, if you stick it out, it DOES!!

Welcome greenacres. I smoked 31 years and have been totally smoke free since 8/10/10. Going into  my 7th month. Once you make that decision, there is lots of support out there. Like Seaside said, there are lots of good tips on this thread too. You can do it!!

Strong cravings today, using the fake cig alot, also stationary bike, music and reading.  Hitting it with everything I've got though.  I'm trying to think what triggered them, could be the non-ending snow we've been haning in Western New York.  Cabin fever - even my cat has it, she's been dashing around from window to window like a whirling dervish.  Karen

Karen, I had a baggie of celery and carrot sticks I carried around and they helped a lot! I would shove one in and the crunching distracted me and they don't pile weight on. Next thing I knew, craving gone.

    Karen,

Absolutely could be cabin fever!  Plus you are going through a really hard time with your godmother's passing so that sadness probably is in there somewhere too!

Anytime you have something you do, big or small that you always did while smoking will sometimes cause a really strong craving the first few times you do it without smoking!!  Something as small as a change of season or as large as grieving would fit that category!

You are right, hit it with EVERYTHING you have and KNOW it will pass!  Sounds like you have been keeping busy so that's good.

About that snow.... Geez, is it never going to end?  I just posted on the "What's for Dinner" thread that I am so sore from shoveling that it's an every man for himself night!!  Not sure what type of snow you all had to the west but we got that really wet, heavy, back-breaking stuff!! I am so ready for this winter to be over and it isn't even March yet!!

Hang in there!! We're pulling for you!

thanks Barbara and Seaside for your words of encouragement, it's passed, it's great to have your own cheering section.  A friend of mine stopped in, she's a smoker, we visited for a few hours and I was content with my fake cig. As soon as she left I am on the computer to my dear cyber friends for a "way to go girl" and you didn't disappoint - thank you  Karen
