Can't post much! This weekend in my son's high school graduation weekend so have company here, including my in-laws who both smoke! Yikes!

Feeling a bit of the nostalgia to have a smoke but, won't do it! Not going to undo almost 18 months of progress! Although... that IS my ash tray.... and they are sitting on the deck where I smoked my last cigarette... LOL

NOT to worry! I am not going THERE! Too much to gain by staying the course AND too much to lose by not!

    STAY STRONG!!!

Ksren - Since this is supposed to be an 8 week program, it gives me time to work on one thing at a time.  Like I said, I jumped in at Stage 2 and have to tell myself to be patient - Rome wasn't built in a day you know - LOL!  I am trying to teach myself new habits along the way and get rid of the old.

Jen, you can do it, one minute at a time, this is a great temptation, but you can go to sleep soon.  In the meantime, Stay Strong.  hugs, Karen

    Karen,

Yep.... That's exactly what I have been doing.... Taking each moment as it comes! And, Yep.... Almost bedtime which is good! Tomorrow they head home!

Before I quit I started going outside to smoke! After that point, we got new furniture in our family room. I have never smoked around it BUT, didn't have the heart to make two 80 year olds go out to smoke! So, I guess their smoking out on the porch, while tempting, isn't killing me as bad as smoking in the house! It's all good!!

The house will air out and I would never want my husband's parents to feel uncomfortable being here!

One of the next steps is to go outside to smoke.  When we first bought our house 11 years ago, we did not smoke in it for the first 3 years.  Then is got blazing hot and hubby decided he was going to stay in the air conditioning- and the rest is history.  We did agree that the only "smoking" room would be the kitchen with a window cracked open.  Got to work on that one - maybe in the next couple of weeks.  I have some other things I want to work on first.  Again, I am taking this one step at a time and will look for the small victories which do add up in the end.

My mantra right now has to be patience, patience, patience.

Thanks Jan! I know I can stick it out and while the 'option' to smoke is tempting, returning to 'having to smoke' is not! I know my personality and I can't EVER have just one! Happy with where I am today an not wanting to go back!

    jo1955,

You've got it!! Slow and steady wins the race!! You are building a sturdy foundation now to help with being successful later! Good idea to spend time now to make sure it's right!

    We're rooting for you!

Hi everyone- well I had set a new target quit day that has come and gone.  This past week I went and saw a Dr. and got a prescription for welbutron (sp?)that I am going to start taking Monday.  I am excited, nervous, anxious and hopeful about the whole thing.

VJ any words of advice or warnings about welbutron would be greatly appreciated. I usually enjoy a glass of wine in the evening and  I have been told to avoid it, not sure why?  The Dr didn't mention anything when prescribing it to me but it was on the warning label and I called.  They said it could heighten the effects of the drug?  So I will abstain, but wish I didn't have to!

Glad to see so many new faces and all the  ones that are still here that gave me so much support in the past.

Hi Laurie08--timing is everything and you're perfect time will come to become smoke-free. Believe in progress not perfection.

Wellbutrin has been used as an anti-depressant for over 20 years with minimal problems. It wasn't until they started selling it as a cessation drug (Zyban--same thing) that the FDA issued a black box warning (the same one as on Chantix--about suicide ideation). I've never had any clients that have had a problem with it, haven't heard about it from collegues either--but just to be really safe--ask your family to watch for any really strange behavior. I think the FDA is being overly cautious but for that reason alone, I would watch the wine. The only real problem seems to be if you have a history of anorexia, bulimia or head injury--there is a slight risk of seizure.

In my experience, it seems women do better than men on Wellbutrin, it also helps to avoid weight gain when quitting. The success rate isn't great (about 25% over 6 months), so if you need a little boost, it works well as a combo with NRT's --they work on different systems in the brain.

Good luck--I know you can be successful--just keep trying and you will find what works for you. Have a joyous day, VJ

Good Morning Ladies  and thanks for the words of encouragement.  In my mind, I think I may have finally found a method that is going to work for me.  Even though with the Filtrim you are still smoking and doing a gradual reduction - I am taking it slow and concentrating on one thing at a time.  When I get through on trigger I will move on to the next.  I have made a list and keep adding to it as I come across them.  I also have been crossing some off the list already.

    Yay Laurie!!!

I so hope that this is THE time for you!! Last time I know you had a rough time of it when you were quitting for your surgery! This time, since you are not preparing for surgery, you will have more options at your disposal!!

I KNOW you can do this!!! I am rooting for you! PS: Excited, nervous, anxious an hopeful is where we ALL start! Eventually, if you just stay with it, excited and hopeful will WIN!

    jo1955,

Glad to hear that things are going well! I will be really interested to hear how the Filtrim works for you! I didn't use any formal method but gradually cut back over the span of 3 months or so before quitting so, it was similar to what you are doing with the Filtrim!

I know the taper doesn't work for everyone but, I do think it was good for me to kind of 'try on' different situations without smoking while still maintaining the safety net of smoking if I needed to!

I can sense from your posts that you are excited to quit!! THAT will help you temendously!!

Look forward to hearing from you!

Seaside, you made it!!!  You need to have such a strong will when others are around smoking, especially in social situations.  And the kids have jobs and DS is all signed up for his classes, indeed life is good.  Just re-connected with my two stepchildren I lost contact with about 7 years ago, will be having them over this week for our reunion, it was so hard to loose them and now they are back.  Have spoken to both over the phone, with me teary during most of it. Life is good for me too.  I have cut back to 3 pieces of nicorette gum a day, no longer use the e cig.  I think I made it!!! hugs, Karen

    Barbara,

Most of the time, no, I don't have to drive them.... Thank GOD!

My husband just got a new car for himself so his old (actually, not so old) car is being shared by the two kids. I only have to drive if there is a conflict in work hours!

Well...in light of the alcohol factor and welbutron, I think I am post poning quitting for one more week.  I want to succeed this time, and next weekend is 4th of July weekend.  My husbands birthday is July 4th and we plan on having a lot of fun, which would be hard to do with quitting drinking/smoking 5 days before hand. We talked today and I think I have decided to wait.  I am ready to give up the cigs- but a glass of wine by the fire at night is hard to give up at the same time!  It's like being pregnant all over again, lol!

    Laurie,

Choosing the right time for you is a BIG part in whether or not you are successful! I was supposed to be a New Years Eve, stroke of midnight quitter and, as anyone who has looked at the roll call can see, my actual date was not Jan 1 but, Jan 18th! No where near as 'cool' of a date BUT it was the date that felt right to me!

You'll find the date that is 'right' for you!

We are here to lend support when you are ready!!!

Well, my quit date is tomorrow.  It's time!  I start chemo "as soon after the July 4th holiday as possible," according to my oncologist, and I do not want the cigarettes to hinder the effectiveness of the chemo drugs.  Besides, it's a nasty, smelly, consuming habit and I'm sick of it!  I have no energy, a constant headache and horrible breath, lol!  I'm done.  I am going to try the patch again, even though it gives me headaches.  I've done it before on the patch.  I know I can do it again.  If you hear from me tomorrow, I've made it through Day 1.  Wish me luck, and I wish all of you continued success!

The filtlrim 8 week program to gradually cut down and quit seems to be working so far.  Have cut down dramatically.  I looked at the calendar and if I go the whole 8 weeks, I am going to make my quit day Aug 30 - which is also my one year cancerversary.  Now that is a goal I know I can keep.

    Jo,

That would be SUCH a cool quit date!!! Plus I can't think of a nicer gift that you could give yourself than to quit smoking!!

    ssmith37,

Hope that you are doing well today!! Sounds like you have put together a list of reasons to quit!! For me, that helped a lot!! It helped me to focus on all I was GAINING by quitting smoking and not what I was GIVING up!!! It made me look at. smoking, not as an old friend but, more like a controlling enemy that I would be better off without after kicking it's sorry butt to the curb!!

Hang in there and post when/if you need to!!

ssmith and jo, you sound like very determined women with quit dates in place, lists in hand, techniques to try.  Just stay strong, and realize that in no way should that tiny rolled up THING have so much power over you and the things you can and cannot do.  Karen

Hello sisters!  Thank you for your good luck wishes!  I feel pretty good today about wearing the patch and not smoking.  I've had much more energy already than I have for the past probably six months!  Nowhere near enough to run a marathon or anything, but who knows?  Maybe next year sometime.  I know the day isn't over yet, but I know I won't give in to the "controlling enemy."  Not today at least.  But I am pretty determined this time since it won't be long until I start chemo.  I just can't imagine going through chemo while continuing to poison my body with cigarettes!  I'm wishing all of you continued strength and success as well!
