Stop Smoking Support Thread

I got it this week. I am a member of the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD.org) and there had just been a discussion on the use of NRT and chantix.. and someone from the Mayo emailed the couple PPT slides that I posted and a couple of research papers: Varenicline and bupropion sustained release combination therapy for smoking
cessation (2009) and Combination treatment with varenicline and nicotine replacement therapy (2009) I will send you a copy if anyone would like to read them. Both are from The Mayo Clinic. Many of the members of ATTUD are the researchers doing the original research on cessation (and have done in the past). Recommendations are all evidence based but often what is being using in the tobacco control community is years away from the general public because the FDA takes so long in changing labels. ATTUD has been petitioning the FDA for years to let manufacturers pack nicotine replacement in a 1 or 2 day package instead of making smokers buy a 2-4 week supply.
I don't recommend e-cigs ('ive posted on that before because of no manufacturing or quality standards). I like the concept so instead my recommendation is the nicotine inhaler--you need a RX. similar concept as the e-cig, there is a cartridge that you insert into a "holder" and you suck on it. There is no battery or propanol gycol, just nicotine from the inhalation. Plus it satisfies the hand to mouth motion like the e-cig. It is regulated and has quality standards set by the FDA, which the e-cig is not.

Thanks. Interesting, that when I used Chantix in mid-2009 from the VA they weren't supposed to give nrt with it. Now they've indicated that the combination like you said about the varenicline and buproprian are a good combination. It just so happened I was already on the one.
I will be off the buproprion soon though as it's being swapped to a different a/d that doesn't exacerbate anxiety like this one does.
Your information is appreciated!

For some time I've been trying to think of some way to check on cyber sisters who just disappear from these forums. Sometimes it is just that they have been busy elsewhere, but no one knew how to reach them. I'm active on over a dozen topics and I've noticed that several of my sisters frequent some of the same topics. I figure that it would take only 3 or 4 of those women willing to keep my phone number and call to see if I'm OK should I disappear for an extended time and I would be happy to do the same for them. If we start a movement to do that we would have few if any instances like the current one in The Fuzzy Room, where we are left wondering and worrying about someone we care for with no way of finding out. This way personal information would not need to be published but someone could always check.
Just send a private message to someone to talk to frequently, maybe feel a connection with and talk to them about the idea, see if they want to exchange information. Chabba

Good call and it works. One of the lovely people on these Boards actually visited me while in the hospital following my BMX. How kind was that, to take the time our of her day and visit a person she'd spoken with or even met, beyond PMs on here. I was blown away at the generous spirit. She's always there to answer questions I might have too. We do have each other's cell numbers for at least texting if nothing else.
So, here's to you, Special K! Yes, you deserve a standing ovation.

VJSL8: I've been most impressed with everything I've ever researched on the Mayo site for any health issue. And I did quit smoking with Chantix in 2007. Did you say there is a link on the Mayo site? I'd like to read it since I recommend Chantix. Thanks in advance.

MinusTwo, How long did you take Chantix? I have been taking it for 8 weeks. Did you have any side effects?

The info I posted from the Mayo Clinic is not from their website so I can't send you a link. I have copies of the research papers on my computer that I can forward to anyone--I just need your regular email.

Have to go get labs done first thing in the morning at my family doctor. This is "routine maintenance" (cholesterol & blood pressure meds) and to also start the pre surgery process - recon in April. My PS wants me family doctor to do the labs and EKG. When I go back Friday for results then will have the EKG done. Then, off to the pain specialist tomorrow afternoon for my neck issues. And the cycle of too many doctor appts starts again. Next week on the 20th I have to get a mammo done - this is also pre surgery. Busy day coming up.

Jo, I start my round of Dr's visits tomorrow too, but not for pre-surgery like you. Blood work in A,M., then MO on next Tues. for 6mo. follow-up and BS in April for annual exam. Going to ask MO what can be done to alleviate knee pain, I'm on the generic of Arimadex, I can't squat down anymore without help to get me upright again, feel like I'm 80! Here comes the scanxiety again. Our newbies are doing great, lisamarie, Maria, Galsal and soon to start Laura and chef, That's the biggest group we've ever had. Keep up the good work ladies!!!!!!!!!! Karen

Laura5 and everyone: Can you believe it feels so long in the past I can't remember exactly. I never, ever thought I'd say something like that when I was counting the hours, not to say the minutes.
But Laura - I think I took Chantix for 6 weeks, though I had essentially weaned myself down from almost 2 packs to to approx 5 cigarettes a day before I started. I think it helped that I wasn't working at the time so was able to go on 6 walks a day - whenever the smoking urge hit me. Unfortunately it also meant I quit going to clubs & refused to drive to see any friends more than 20 minutes away for awhile (driving was a real trigger for me).
When I quit I told everyone, including all my docs, that it I ever got a life threatening disease I would buy a pack of cigarettes first thing. I quit because osteoporosis was threatening. That was over 3 years before BC and I managed not to buy that pack. Hang in there. You all can do it.

Minus Two, I find it encouraging that you can't remember, actually!

Jo and Karen,
Good luck at your appointments tomorrow!
Karen,
I am on Tamoxifen which is isn't really supposed to (according to my MO) cause joint issues... To that I say bullspit.... I did not feel like this before I started taking it. Oh... not to mention that I now am also experiencing some pretty crazy acne.... Yes... that acne that I did not experience as a teenager has appeared with a vengence leaving scars in it's wake... So... I have the body of an 80 year old and the face of a teenager... and not in a good way.... Maybe I should ask DH to the prom this year....lol!
Ahhhh the things we do cuz we just don't have a choice!
Jo,
That comment of 'the cycle of too many doctors appointments starts again' sums it up perfectly!0 -
Seaside, I got acne too!!!! Had to ask my granddaughter what cleansing product to use, had to buy a cover stick for pimples that suddenly appear and refuse to go away. I guess it is prom time again!

Hi everyone, Jo, VJ, Seaside, Karen , Minus and all new quitters !!!! Remember me? I tried to quit couple of months ago, then failed to stay quit. So here I am again, with a new determination and the SECOND day without a cig. Ok so far, as I am doing cold turkey. Need this thread more than anything now!!!!! Oh so want to succeed this time.
BTW, I always read everything here and keep admiring all of you, your strength and ability of supporting each other.
Everyone, keep going strong and smoke free.

Karen--the best agent for acne is toothpaste--it has a drying agent in it. just put the smallest dab on a pimple before you go to bed at night and it will have dried up by morning. It works really well with those ones that are deep too.

Thanks VJ, I'll try that, oh the lovely things we get with AI's. Karen

Hi Ladies,
Well done to everyone and thanks everyone for the support. I'm still in my sisters and will be heading back home tomorrow. I am happy to report that I didn't smoke at all and I am feeling fine.
I hope everyone had a lovely weekend.
Blessings and hugs
Maria

Karina, welcome back, of course we remember you, nearly all of non-smokers have failed on their first try, now you have valueable knowledge of your triggers and will be stronger in this attempt to quit. We are all here ready and willing to support you and encourage you. We have a good size group of women at various stages of quitting and some getting their plans firmed up. Two days, cold turkey shows a strong determination, it will help you to go to 3 days, then 4... glad to have you back. Maria, over 2 weeks in and on vacation with your sister and NO smoking!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations, hope you had a wonderful holiday as you set your sights on week 3. Karen

Karina - Welcome back. We are all here for you with lots of support and encouragement.
Labs for routine stuff and pre surgery are done. Last appt with pain specialist today - YIPEE!! My family doctor will write the script for my pain meds and I only need to go back if the neck really starts acting up. I just have to learn to take frequent breaks and give my neck a rest. Also, he told me to never let anyone crack my neck.

VJ,
Toothpaste... Well, who knew?!! Lol....
I'm sure willing to give it a try.... The blemishes that I keep getting are deep and fairly painful.... They seem to come and go in waves but is most disturbing to me is even when they are gone, they leave a red mark....
Karen,
We'll have to compare notes on prom dresses... Wouldn't do to show up in the same dress!! Giggle!0 -
Dear Jo, so glad your appt's. went smoothly, I was at the hospital too for blood work, had a great technician, got it at first poke, I usually have at least 2 then get a new person. Chiropractic work has always terrified me, I don't think the spine was meant to have "adjustments". Who is going to make sure you take frequent breaks, I have a feeling when you are on the job, you are on the job, lol. hugs to you, Karen
