I remembers saying "just for the next hour I won't smoke" when I was in the thick of it. I know you can do it LisaMarie. You want it! We are here for you!! If you have a setback, it is just that...never give up!0 -
LisaMarie, so sorry on the loss of your beloved Aunt. It is a sad time to go through but try and think about all of the beautiful memories you have with her. It will help ease the paint. I admire you for only sneaking off a couple of times .... you are there in the throes of quitting as you realized it was just not worth it. It takes some time but you are coming over to the other side .... what you experienced would put many a smoker back to the demon but you quivered but didn't lose hope. Good going girlfriend! To all of the other beautiful ladies on this site, as well as you LisaMarie, I hope you all have a great Christmas and Santa is good to you! Enjoy the holidays .... we have earned it!

One of the fun things about quitting smoking was all the new-found money Santa (me) had to spend on me. And yes - I'm the one who quit so I rewarded myself every time I could. Just ask Coldwater Creek or DSW or Amazon.

Thanks Judy , I know if I continued on I will be in the same place as my aunt and she died a horriable death on a respirator ... I am so grateful that I have all of you beautiful ladies to come talk to and get support from ... I love you all , I have said that before.. I have been one tough stubborn brat with this quitting stuff but you all manage to help me through the rough patches ..I like what Minus two had to say .. at least I keep trying and I never give up ...I wish everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year .. xoxoxoxo

Yes LisaMarie...keep trying sweet girl. NEVER give up on YOU! It really is a numbers game. You keep trying and sooner or later, on the number "whatever" try, it sticks. The final result is the important thing, not how long or how many tries it took to get there! HUGS and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you! xo

Bumping for those who are still working on quitting. New Years is a hard time, especially if drinking is a trigger. One thing I used regularly was sun flower seeds in the shells. Great hand to mouth movement. Pop one in your mouth, crack the shell, retrieve the shell, chew & then start over.
Just for today.....

Happy Birthday LisaMarie ... if I knew how to post a big sign I would. But I don't, so pretend there is a big sign with a lit birthday cake wishing you many happy returns. Wow, you are doing good .... fantastic to hear .... music to my ears. I liked what you said a few posts ago ... you were a brat ...... ha, ha. We were all smoking brats but you see the light now, don't you. I sound a little holy and don't mean to but I'm so happy for you. Keep going .... we are all walking in your footpath, edging you on.
Happy New Year's to all. Cold here in Ontario but hot tubbing it tonight. Who cares about the cold ... good friends, food, drinks and champagne at midnight will keep me warm. Enjoy the evening everyone and may 2014 be good to you all!

And another belated B-day wish to LisaMarie - as well as hugs for strength & luck with the job situation. Hang in there. You're almost got it licked this time !!
Judi - I hope the hot tub is indoors! It's in the 40's here & I'm freezing. Also - sorry to admit that I won't be awake at midnight, but I'll toast you all earlier in the evening with egg nog. Actually since Texas celebrates NY with firecrackers, I might roll over & greet the year. Happy 2014.

For all of us. If you didn't read Dear Abby in today's paper, she's got our back. Apparently it's from the original credo of Al-Anon. It's long but probably worth reading. Notice under the smoking paragraph - if only for today. Happy New Year.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about
yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to
overcome all of my problems at once. I know that I can do something for 24
hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress
me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with
sunshine.JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct
those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot.JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires
effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be
kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I'll not speak ill of
others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when
someone else is talking.JUST FOR TODAY: I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I'm a
smoker, I'll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully -- if only for
today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even
if it's only around the block.JUST FOR TODAY: I will gather the courage to do what is right and take the responsibility
for my own actions.0 -

good for you Lisamarie! it gets so you are so proud of yourself you won't even be tempted!

Lisamarie - you go girl. Set up a time for your first retail therapy - spending that money you haven't used to buy smokes! (even if it's only nail polish). How's the new resume & job hunt coming? Brrr - it's a cold time of year to be looking.

Three days for me. **sigh** Will just take it a day at a time.
0 -
Oh Ziggy - great news. You're right - one day at a time. Are you located where it's warm enough to get out & walk? It really helped me to just swing (or stomp, or scream) out of the house & walk around the block whenever the urge hit me. By the time I got back home, the urge had subsided.
0 -
Hi Minus Two - No - I used to live in Texas but now am in Ohio. It's actually probably a good thing because I don't smoke in the house & there's about a foot of snow outside & it's about 9 degrees. So I have an incentive to not go out to smoke. : )
I promised my BS that I would not smoke a month before the exchange surgery & I have wanted to quit for a long time anyway even though I love to smoke. I figure that if I have to quit for a month, I should just do it & not start again. Don't think I'll want to to much right after surgery anyway,
0 -
You can do it ziggypop!
0 -
Ziggy - don't forget to remind us about your surgery when you get closer. My chemo brain wouldn't hold the date for a month but I want to be sure & hold you in my thoughts when you there.

Hi ladies. I am about to join another club I didn't want to join - the ex-smoker. :-) I DON'T WANT TO DO IT! I love smoking and am going to have a VERY hard time! I am hoping you all can share some things that is working/worked for you. I am giving myself this weekend to enjoy my last pack. I am going to start taking Tamoxifin and my Dr. told me that smoking along with that can cause blood clots, so that is my main motivation. Not looking forward to Monday - my quit date.
One question - did you all start with going cold turkey or ease into it? I am planning on cold turkey, but get scared just thinking of it!
0 -
Johnetta: Yup - we've all been there - LOVED it. No, that's not accurate. I still love it, I'm just a smoker who does not smoke. But I'm 1/2 way to 7 years as a non-smoking smoker. And I know I can't ever take even one puff. If you scroll back through some of the pages you'll see each of us had a different method. I used Chantix. Others have used Wellbutrin or patches. Some have used e-smokes to ease off. I've even known people to use hypnosis or acupuncture. And some have made it cold turkey. You have the best chance if you've absolutely made up your mind to quit. Then find some way to distract your pre-programed urges. If you slip - climb right back on & start over. Look for VJ's posts on this thread and PM her to get her book of tips.
I smoked for 40 years. My first movement when opening my eyes every morning was to grab the smokes from the bedside table & light up. And a cigarette was my last act before turning off the lights at night. I first quit smoking in my house. Two weeks later i quit smoking in my car. Two weeks after that I started Chantix. I ate lots of sunflower seeds - hand to mouth movement - and peeled lots of carrots. I quit talking of the phone for awhile - a big trigger for me, as well as evening cocktails. Every time i wanted a smoke, I tied on my tennis shoes and went for a walk about the block. I also had a planned walk of 3 miles a day. Neighbors laughed at me doggedly forging ahead through rainstorms or whatever. I joined a gym & went every single day for a 45 minute work out. I read 'I quit smoking' blog stories at night on my computer.
Other ladies will join in with their tips. We've got your back. Good luck. Remember - it's day by day.
