Good morning, ladies. My husband made breakfast, but he likes everything burnt. I woke up to a smoke filled house, luckily the smoke alarms didn't go off. He means well, but I just went back to bed and would face the mess later.
Bealls Department store is reopening, today. I would like to go, but don't want to deal with a crowd or waiting in line. I am sounding like a lump, so I just might read a book, after the kitchen clean up.

We are sitting here hoping the rain is done, but we could get another bit of a shower. We had a lot of rain yesterday afternoon. Didn't pour down but enough to keep you nicely wet if you ventured out. So, the temps. are down I the 60's and will hang there for awhile. Not sure how long since we see our weather as so hard to predict. That rain storm yesterday for instance was over a day late.
At least the green haze across my car and the outdoor furniture and deck will be settled for a bit. The leaves are pretty much all out now, but we still have to have the propellers sequence. Spring has it's leaning cycles just like Fall.
Sorry about the dental work Carole and hope that is your only issue. Glad to hear the D. Inn is trying to keep people safe. Knowing my touch of OCD I would likely go over some areas anyway. They do seem intent on not mixing up guests and food as well which I think is super.
No big plans for the day unless bill paying is a big plan. Sigh !! Well, nice to have that out of my hair and since outdoors is off for working it will give me something to so. Always a silver lining. I'll be able to do the bills immediately because there is back-up funds due to virus paymts.
I hope you all have a really good day. Stay safe and well.

Bummer about needing a crown, Carole. Amazing how much dental work can cost.
Bob reports that the kitchen at the Oak Lawn Hilton has reopened for pickup service--including free breakfast for Silver & Gold level Executive members. He had a huge Sun. breakfast of poached eggs over corned beef hash, danish and fruit (the latter two shrink-wrapped). The rooms are left vacant 24 hrs. between guests, most of whom are doctors at the two nearby hospitals. Pool still closed, of course.
Our housekeeper's DH tested negative! He needs one more negative test next week before he can stop self-isolating (except for dialysis sessions, of course).
Judy, how goes the escape...uh, move...to Glencoe?

Good news. No crown necessary. The tooth has an overlay and it seemed firmly attached. The line I see is a stain. The visit including x-ray of the tooth was $40.
Petite, funny story about your dh liking burnt food for breakfast! One of our MN campground neighbors, Mary, likes shopping at Bealls when she's wintering in Florida. She loves the women's clothes at bargain prices.

Petite, you are a real sport. To go back to bed and clean up the 'burnt' food kitchen mess later. I am reminded ( though I'm fairly certain your Dh likely doesn't apply here ) of my sil and bil who always ordered burnt toast at breakfast --- even when we were out. Always amazing to me since restaurants are not schooled in "burning" patrons food. I think it had something to do with settling their stomachs -- which must have been really bad. I can't imagine eating ( new word here ) cinderized toast, but they would send the toast back till it was nearly black. Yech !!
Sun today ( yay ) but it will remain cool. Better tomorrow -- around 70 then I think. Maybe it will stay dry enough to do some yard finish. Have to see about that. Otherwise, same old thing. I am not feeling hemmed in by staying home. I admit though -- we do leave the house every day to feed the feral cats so I actually feel like I'm still always on the go. Tomorrow will be bath day again for my friend.
Carole, that is good news and likely worth the money to find out that all is fine. You can go to your summer place in MN and not have to worry.
Have a great day and stay safe and well everyone.

Good morning, ladies. The last couple of days they (county?) has been repaving the road. I couldn't get me walk in. I did some laps and water exercise. It was 77 degrees in the pool. I will probably have to do the same today. We are blocked in this morning.

I watched some golf videos yesterday on youtube. This morning I will go to the driving range and try to improve my golf swing. The pros at our club are not giving personal lessons at the present time. DH gave me two lessons for Christmas but I will have to wait to use them.
It's a pretty day. We turned off the a/c last night and opened some windows. Nothing makes dh happier than to turn off the a/c. I guess it's his mid-western upbringing. I didn't grow up with a/c. We had a big window fan that created a draft in the house. But I like running the a/c and keeping the pollen and dust outside.
Petite, a swimming pool offers so many good exercise options.

When I feel betrayed by someone, instead of sulking, clinging to my resentment and playing the role of victim, I am challenged to strengthen my soul through forgiveness. By forgiving the person who hurt me, I strengthen my soul. . . . each time we are called upon to forgive, we nourish our souls and learn more about who we are and what we have to share in this world. This is also an example of unconditional love.

Pretty this morning and it will be warmer. Hopefully we can think about putting the deck back together soon. Dh is going to doing some staining/painting and then we will go down in the yard to do the extra patio area down there. Also taking the chimenea down there. Boy, was that heavy. Well we put it up on the deck over 17 yrs. ago -- and funny, it wasn't near so heavy then. Glad that we could get it down. I think it is too heavy for where it was sitting upstairs on the our deck so I will feel a lot more comfortable now. Also, I will be far easier to clean the deck in winter w/o things there that are not needed and functioning in any way.
Even though we live in the woods and I'm fighting sinus reactions all the time I do love to not use the a/c quicker than I have too. I think the house needs to air out from being shut up all winter and get out some of the stale closed up odor and any toxic materials that may have become trapped. When the summer heat and humidity are strong enough to bother -- then we have to close it back up and wait for the coolness of Fall -- to air out again.
We did not have a/c growing up and I think only in my last couple of yrs. at home did we even have a fan. Then again, we had a lot more limited hot, humid weather at that time. It was more predictable and usually I think only in August -- now often the extremer weather here can come earlier and stay later. Still we usually have a couple of weeks where we can do okay with doors and windows open.
I hope you all have a really nice day. Stay safe and well.

Good morning, ladies. It is bright and sunny this morning. We binged watch TV last night and slept late this morning. The cats did not seem to notice that the food court was late opening. Illinoislady, I agree with opening the house up and airing it out. Unfortunately, we already have the a/c on. When we first moved to Florida, 1958, we did not have a/c. My dad put in one room air probably about 1960. My parents did not get central air until after we, the kids, had all moved out. My elementary school was not air conditioned. LOL. All those smelly little kids!

Afternoon ladies!
I too grew up w/o AC. My parents home finally got it years after we were out. My NY home still doesn't have it! I have radiators, no duct work, 1 window AC in the bedroom. Some days in the past felt brutal, forces us outside to the yard & pool. Big box fan in upstairs bedroom window can pull in some great night air. I also have a dirt basement floor which as gross as it is, keeps the 1st floor relatively cool. I'm less bothered by it since retiring. When I worked, it was hell drying off in high humidity. LOL Oh the memories!

Smelly little kids in FLORIDA!! All seasons of the year, although kids got pretty smelly without frequent baths in Northern areas. I still don't know how much I will be running my new AC. I still claim that it is needed only a couple of days in the summer around here. But to run it on fan, with whatever filtration of the air it does may be better than just a fan in the window. It won't be installed until a friend's son gets here; he usually comes on Saturdays and does a bit of work that she can't do.
I spent most of the day yesterday cleaning up the house. I will be ripping fabric outside, for another round of maskmaking.
0 -
McBaker, interesting that you "rip" the fabric rather than cut it. If I make more masks, I will make them a little wider. My very old mini Sears sewing machines just barely sews through multiple layers. It does fine with two layers but when it comes to four layers, the machine balks.
I am thankful for a/c when the humidity is high. We leave the a/c on when we leave for the summer, but turn the setting up to 80 degrees. If we didn't do that, everything in the house would be mildewed when we returned.

It saves time when making large numbers. I would not recommend it with a few for personal use. I have discovered that my machine does not like moving from few layers to many layers. If I arrange the pleats so that they begin and end right next to each other, my machine is happy.
I took a generic formulation of Excedrin at bedtime last night, and my Fitbit told me that it was my best night ever. Hoping that this will continue. Tippy woke me up again when I started sleep-talking. I appreciate that.

Rained a lot during the night and it stayed with us until about 10 a.m. this morning. Since then we have had a fair amt. of sun though it dims now the then with the clouds going by. I think ( sure hope ) the rain is over. We are cool today due to the rain, but the sun helps a lot as to what we feel outdoors.
Still fighting with a spot on our roof that started leaking about 5 yrs. or so ago and nothing we have done ( it got better though ) seems to handle it. I'm amazed since we went yrs. w/o the issue -- not even the hint of one. For some reason we can't seem to figure how to reproduce earlier success. So, we have someone else coming out to look at it. Hope they can figure it out.
Can't finish the deck with all the moisture outside and can't work on the new patio area either. Just have to figure out some inside chores. No lack of projects in here.
Hope you all have a good day. Stay healthy and safe.

Carole - we too leave the AC on here in FL, also set to 80. Today we had hurricane shutters installed, easy accordian type. Old ones were individual slats to manually put up. So glad to get it done before we leave, now we'll close the house up before we go. I think it will help cooling an empty house too.
IllinoisLady - years back we had a leak in NY house. Brother in law did roofs for a living, he said to remember the leak probably wasn't above the drip. Water will follow along the path of least resistance - gain access and travel. Ours turned out to be the flashing around the chiminney, let water in, it traveled down & out a roofing truss (15 feet maybe?) to drip. Tar was run around the flashing and no more drip. I hope yours can be fixed. Best of luck with it.

I grew up on the third floor of a 4-story walk-up apt. house in Brooklyn. The wiring couldn't take A/C. We had a big box fan in the window in the summer, and when it got too hot indoors we'd sit on the fire escape or go up to the roof. The Catskills resorts' raison d'être was the brutal heat of NYC summers--coupled with the relatively short drive up from the city and the fact that the fanciest resorts in MA or VA were "restricted" (they didn't allow Jews). Families would spend summers there (either in hotels or "bungalow colonies") and the dads would drive up from the city on weekends and then go back to their jobs during the week. My aunt had a ranch house in the Shawngunks (SE of the Catskills), so when we weren't in day camp in the city we'd spend a couple of weeks up there.
My elementary school--ancient brick bldg.--had no A/C--by early June our blouses would stick to the backs of the desk seats. We got our first A/C when I was 12, about to start high school (which back then began for most NYC students in 10th grade); my grandma sold the apt. house where we lived and we moved to a much newer 2-flat in a nicer neighborhood. We had 2 units, mounted in sleeves cut into the walls. It was heavenly--we had no idea anyone could be so comfy in the summer. We also stopped going up to my aunt's house when she moved to FL--instead, we'd stay at a hotel for the couple of weeks between day camp and the start of school--my HS, built in 1937, also lacked A/C.
My college didn't even have A/C in its two large older bldgs. across the quad from each other--natch, that's where most of my classes were. Summer session was, uh, interesting. (We commuted by subway from home). And when Bob & I got married, our apt. in Seattle lacked A/C too--summers were supposed to be too mild to need it and the wiring was inadequate. Unfortunately, there was usually one brutal week per summer, so we had a box fan and even a "swamp cooler" (a metal box you filled with ice, with a built-in fan blowing across the ice). When we moved to Chicago, the very first thing we bought was a window unit A/C--even before we bought furniture! (Bob's parents never installed A/C--they would spend summer days & evenings in the basement).
And our very first winter in Chicago was the infamous "Blizzard of '79," when it hit -26F in January. My boss at the A.G.'s office gave me two weeks off to study for the IL bar exam (because I'd been admitted in WA, including the U.S. Dist. Ct. for the W. District, I could practice only in Federal courts in IL till I got admitted in IL as well). One morning I was awakened by our cat, who meowed and ran into the dining room. We followed her into there--and found water dripping from the ceiling (and also from the kitchen's ceiling fixture). We were lucky to have a bunch of big pots and a couple of wastebaskets, till the landlord (a neophyte property owner from Canada who had no idea what he'd gotten himself into when he bought a 36-flat courtyard bldg.) went up onto the roof with an axe and busted up the ice-dams himself. We were counting the days till the end of the lease, plotting our early escape, when we were served with "Notice of Intent to Declare Condominium." Free at last, free at last! Took me half an hour of rolling on the floor laughing before I was able to call Bob at work and tell him.

Cindy, we have hurricane shutters, too, and lower them before we depart. They're all manual except the large one over the sliding glass door. It's electric and lowers with a switch. DH had the shutters installed with a portion of his small inheritance from his parents. When they're lowered, the house becomes a cave and, I'm sure, does stay cooler during our summer absence. One of the first things we do when we arrive home in October is raise the shutters.
It's true that a leak in the roof can be tricky to locate.
The wind is whipping the trees outside after a front came through last night. Today looks like a blustery fall day instead of a day in May.
Mother's Day last year was the final Mother's Day with my mother. DH and I and my sister Michelle and her dh set up a table in my mother's room at the nursing home and we had Popeye's chicken for our meal. I have some happy pictures that I will share with my siblings tomorrow. DH's mother has been deceased for quite a few years. We talked about her a few days ago and praised some of her good character traits. We both were blessed with loving mothers.
Not sure what I will do today. I need to make some lists of things to buy for transport to MN. Instead of waiting to stock up on essentials when I arrive there, I will stock up here except for foods like fresh meat.
Petite, I love your cheerfulness.

Good morning, ladies. It is fun reading the no a/c stories. How about black & white television? LOL

Good morning from sunny ( cool enough the furnace is running though ) Illinois. I feel blessed to have the sun ( always makes my day even in the dead of winter ) and will enjoy the day whatever comes. Had hoped to do some things out in the yard, but it is still a little dampish from the previous rain and despite not having much wind may still be too cool.
Hopefully I will have some ideas to share with the guy ( carpenter ) who is coming over to look at our roof, after hearing all of you. Dh has complained a lot about how some of our house was built. It was likely a real challenge. The man we bought from originally had a single-wide mobile home here. What he in fact did was to build this house around the mobile home. That meant that he and family never really had to move out. Once the house was done -- he dismantled the mobile home bit by bit until only the ( new house ) was left. So, mobile homes, especially the older ones had things ( sometimes doors, bath and kitchen appliances, even cabinets ) that were designed different or were a slightly different size. That has always meant that when changing things we usually had to make adjustments ( on the go often ) on new installations. The old ones always looked the same - but maybe an inch difference. Only just lately wondering if our roof issue has something to do with odd sizing too -- and if we can find the PLACE.
The holidays always make me feel that a little piece of me is missing. I am still so grateful for the voice in my head that urged me to move back home here after my Mom moved back in 1996. By early summer of '97 we were here. We had the greatest yr. and a half with Mom before she passed away. I remain humble and grateful for he gift of that time with her and the voice that made it desirable and possible. That as well as some other life instances have been what fueled my study into the spiritual realm.
Hope you all have a beautiful day. Stay safe and healthy.

Bob brought home flowers from Whole Foods today, and Gordy sent a huge bouquet.
Was able to take the tomato plants back out for some nice sunshine today, as it hit 60. Not going down into frost territory till tomorrow night--and maybe not even then. Rain tomorrow evening, but they took the "wintry mix" out of the picture.
My kitty Happy bit me in the face today--on my chest, purring & nuzzling, then a sudden nip before dashing off to the sofa. Washed it with soap & water, then direct pressure to stop the bleeding, neosporin ointment, and a couple of Band-Aid "spots." Bob said to call Urgent Care for a tele-visit, but they refused and insisted I either come in or go to the ER. Not gonna happen. Bob had me take my last remaining Clindamycin (which I take before dental appointments) and call my primary--who is himself out sick. (He's the medical director of a nursing home, so uh-oh). The on-call doc told me I did exactly the right thing and called in a week's script for Clindamycin. (Can't take Augmentin, as I have a penicillin allergy--as well as sulfa and Cipro). Will flush the little wounds tonight with sterile saline before I put on more neosporin and sterile "spots." Hope I don't get any swelling or redness--if I do I'd have to go to the ER. (Last place I possibly want to be these days).
We didn't have color TV growing up--just one single Dumont B&W console in the living room, and we were one of only two families in the building who even had a TV. When I was 12 I saved up my allowance and bought a secondhand "table model" B&W set and a pair of rabbit-ears. Didn't get a color TV till Bob & I married & moved to Seattle. (He did have color TV growing up).

Sandy, may you heal well.
My parents did not get a TV until I left home for college!
