Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

Ragweed season has started, a week earlier and more intensely than last year. Even people who never had seasonal allergies before are noticing. And when it storms, both ozone and mold-spore levels can bother most people, allergies or not.

There is nothing to compare with the courage of ordinary people whose names are unknown and whose sacrifices pass unnoticed. The courage that dares without recognition, without the protection of media attention, is a courage that humbles and inspires and reaffirms our faith in humanity. Aung San Suu Kyi

Rained all night here and some this early morning. This afternoon sun is peeking out now and then -- sometimes muted and sometimes not. So, it is not too pleasant out of doors. Okay this morning on the deck ( in Sandoval ) but may be not this afternoon. Enough shade and breeze -- hmmm, maybe.
Going to be a lazy Sunday. I have some things lined up to do but won't be un-happy if I don't get to all of them. I'm starting to feel like I can do more so likely I can.
I hope you all have a really good Sunday.

Hot & getting stickier here--storms predicted to roll in during the wee hours.

Getting stronger every day, still need my round the clock Tylenol though. The last 2 days I was able to use my walker and go around the entire building outside. Today is supposed to be in the 70's so will probably go out again this afternoon. Wednesday I get my staples out.

Our beliefs are so powerful that they color our entire world. We literally see what we believe, but we can--and most of us do--fail to take responsibility for what we see, especially what we see within. -Hugh Prather
The biggest addiction, and one we least often talk about, is being addicted to beliefs. We really get hooked into thinking what we believe is true and right. -Martha Boesing

Puffin: Good to hear that you are making progress. Glad your weather is cooperating too.
We will have another warm ( too warm ) day here. I think more rain closer to evening. I'm feeling stronger and thinking about adding a bit more on my plate. The weather tends to dampen some of my enthusiasm but thank goodness not all of it.
Hope you all have a gorgeous day.

Puffin, That's great.
It is 80 degrees and sunny. The birds are quiet and the cats would rather stay the house. I have the lanai all to myself. I have a mamo and ultrasound next week. My registration was over the phone. I will have my temperature taken and answer questions at the door. Masks of course are required. I won't have to wait in the lobby. The week after I follow up with the MO and RO. The 23rd is 1 year post surgery. Time flies.

Sandy - I feel for you! Too much going on and allergies could halt you.
Puffin- good news. Keep healing.
IllinoisLady- don't over do it, you're staying busy.
Petite1 - one year behind you. It does seem like after BC, I track time based on it. From DX, to the number of years left on the AI (2.5 yrs, look at that - halfway thru!).
It's hot & humid with a heat advisory. I woke at 8:50, and by 9:10 I was out mowing the front yard and half the back. I knew it was now or never, being gone it was higher than we like it and there is rain forecasted Wed, Thurs & Friday. We have a Black & Decker rechargeable battery powered mower, w 2 batteries in case it dies mid mow. It's very lite weight too, but I did leave the back half of yard and all outside the fence for him to do!
Enjoy the day, don't over do anything!

It is the beginning of a heat wave for this area again and they are still working on A/C installation. They cleaned the ceiling duct work for the first floor today since it was raining loose insulation pieces back in November. So maybe by next week we will have central air again?
The baby parakeet is now 4 weeks old and really other than still being smaller than its parents, doesn't really look much like a baby anymore. It is still relying on them for feedings though I have caught it exploring the seed dishes. I am trying to get it used to being on my finger and it is getting better each day. It tucks itself into the cat bowl bed for naps and at night which is fun to watch as it adjusts the tissue liner. Will need to be seaprated from parents in next 2 weeks so it needs to be self feeding by then. Enjoy the photos.

Thank You for those great pictures Betrayal. I never knew I would find such joy in getting to experience the birth and development of a baby parakeet. Glad that the aby is responding fairly well to your attentions to it. You are going to have a good friend soon.
Wow !!! We should all be careful in the heat. That sounded like a lot of mowing Cindy. I know though with a rain forecast you can't put it off. We are going to go into a similar period as yours -- so some outside work being done here as well --- slowly.

Betrayal, It doesn't look like a baby anymore. So cute.
My big adventure today was Wal-mart. It was packed, but they added the counter person and the mask police out front. Many shelves are still bare, but plenty of paper products. After filling my cart, I went to the checkout. There is a very long line for self check out and every other cashier had lines (social distancing). A big thunderstorm rolls in and their internet was going on and off. It took forever. I was worried about the woman in front of me. She seemed to have trouble breathing. She kept fanning her mask. The manager came to help her and got her safely out of the store. They even took her cart out. So, by that time, the internet seemed to work OK. When I got out a downpour was in progress. I was parking at the very end of the parking lot. I was very wet and grumpy when I got home, but survived.
CindyNY, it would kill me to mow the yard, even with a riding mower. LOL

Never a dull moment. Was outside securing whatever I could when my watch buzzed with a tornado warning. Gordy had come over to see me before I have my procedure (and for the third time, he missed our HK, who had a medical appt that was moved up earlier--Bob is her PCP, but his office out in Hickory Hills is over an hour SW of here, so she went straight over there instead of coming in). We hightailed it to the basement--bringing laptop & cats. Had a very scary 45 min. down there before they lifted the warning. I set the tomato plants back upright--only 2 tomatoes fell off so I rinsed them and set them on the sill to (eventually) ripen. Because the soil was so soaked, the pots fell over without spilling any dirt. Not 5 minutes later, we lost our power. In the middle of holding for ComEd (second try), the power came back.
Our neighborhood (or at least our block) was pretty much spared. Still thundering and moderately raining, with a few gusts--but nothing like earlier (nor in other areas). AFAIK (or can safely see), no trees down. And our deck furniture and gas grill are intact too. Fingers crossed that the power stays on so that if the rain picks back up, the sump pump can kick in and keep us from flooding.

Nearing 7 p.m. here and getting very black. All the cats are inside so we are just going to eat some dinner and hope for the best. I don't think tornadoes were in our local forecast but I'm un-trustworthy of a lot or our forecasts. We have no wind -- so it is possible we will just get wet and nothing more. Fingers crossed here too.

Good morning, ladies. Wow, Sandy, that sounds scary. Glad you are OK.
There was a bear sighting about 30 minutes ago on the southside of my sub. There is a large preserve, Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, between Homosassa and Weeki Wachee and sometimes a bear will wander out. Love the nature around here.
A thunderstorm is expected in about an hour, per accuweather, so I will enjoy the lanai with a cup of coffee and my little black cat. After that it is time the change bedding and wash all that. Hope everyone has a pleasant day.

The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every person feels safe on his or her streets and in the house of his or her friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his or her neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of human beings. This is what people sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.

Sandy, hope all goes well with your upcoming procedure.

Betrayal - that cute baby bird tucked into the cat bowl is precious.
We had a thunderstorm yesterday in the late afternoon. Black sky, lots of thunder with some rain. I think south of us had the brunt of the storm with a lot of rain.
My niece lost power again yesterday, but it came back on quickly. A friend is going up on her roof this evening to tar around the chimney. And our cousin is looking this week at her sump pump situation - should she do a battery back up (battery can lose its power if power is off long enough) OR switch to a "water pressure" system that doesnt require electricity. It's out of our wheel house of knowledge. Either way we believe it's costly, and not sure if it needs to be done ASAP, as the chimney definitely does.
Another heat advisory today. Stay safe & cool!

Turns out that a bit over a mile north of us, in Rogers Park, an EF-1 tornado touched down and roared NW through the area at 110 mph before becoming a water spout over the lake. Century-old trees were uprooted, parked cars destroyed, transformers blown, roofs damaged and entire streets blocked by downed trees & sparking power lines. First documented EF-1 to hit w/in the city limits since one on the SW Side in 1983, giving lie to the myth that twisters don't happen in the city this far east.
The storm was a "derecho:" fast-moving (avg. 75mph) straight-line storm 200+ miles long and 40 mi. wide. The south suburbs were hardest-hit by outages: Bob's office is not expected to have power restored till Saturday afternoon.

Sandy - I saw the devastation/destruction in Chicago. Glad you are safe and not in harms way.

Sandy ( WHEW) but I do feel so sorry for all the devastation of your neighbors. I had just been reading about that very descriptive name. Straight line winds are very treacherous. We have had them down here a couple of times.

Personally know the power of straight line winds since that is what caused the trees to hit our house in November. It is now 9 months later and we are still in the throes of rebuilding. They will finish installing gutters and downspouts tomorrow so hopefully no more water in an already damaged basement. Isaias dealt us a new blow with more water damage which destroyed the basement flooring (went from patch job to total gut) to add insult to injury. So hopefully gutters and downspouts will mean we are prepared for the next thunderstorm.
My condolences to those in Chicago that have damage to their homes. It will be a while before they can recover and storms like this just overpower insurance companies, structural engineers and the availability of restoration companies. Plus they bring out all the sleazy fly by night contractors. I am hoping we have all repairs completed before the 1st year anniversary.

Amazing how many people are pitching in to volunteer to remove downed trees, sweep up broken glass from crushed cars, make some streets passable again, and repair porches & decks. "My City, My Block, My Hood," which is an activist group down on the w. and s. sides, came up to Rogers Park wielding chainsaws, leaf-blowers, vacs, rakes and brooms. There will indeed be the usual fly-by-night parasite contractors, but they will find slimmer pickings than before.

Good morning to all. The summer is passing. Two couples who stay here full time during the summer, both retired, have announced plans to depart Sept. 20. One couple to return to Arizona winter quarters and the other to FL. It will be hot both places. We will probably stay until Oct. If the weather is nice, we'll stick around to enjoy the fall colors.
Glad that those in healing stages are doing well.
The parakeet is cute.

Good morning, ladies. Rain this morning. My wonderful cleaning lady is here. I am so thankful to have her.

Going to be hot again here today and waiting for rain. It was predicted yesterday possibly for the next three or four days -- so sounds like we will stay sticky for awhile. I really don't like that much, but hey -- there are always, but always things to do inside. It has been quite tolerable in the mornings and only gets icky once we pass noon.
Carole, you sound like you have stayed fairly cool and comfortable for the most part. I would stay there and miss as much as the heat and humidity as possible. Cleaning ladies are fantastic -- I know, I use to be one. Wish I could enjoy cleaning my house as much as I enjoyed the work I did for others. I think the nice thing there was several of them cleaned before I got there. They didn't wane me to think bad of them. It is not something I would do -- but I understand how you don't want to show negatives things to others -- no matter who they are.
I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Jeeves (nickname for my Brit DH) does some cleaning (dusts, vacuums, mops floors, launders towels). Partial substitute for a good cleaning lady, but he works for room & board!
Still warm here (mid to upper 80s) & humid, but temps dipping a little starting Saturday.
ChiSandy - Tornado in Rogers Park sounds scary. Just glad by DD no longer living there (was on Sheridan Rd, with view of the lake from her apartment). The looting on the Mag Mile also looks just awful. Glad you & your family made it through the storm ok.
Betrayal - That baby parakeet sure grew quickly! Thanks for the pics.

This weekend, starting with tomorrow, will be an ordeal. Have to be at UIC Hospital by 5:45am (!), which will be difficult because of city-imposed road & ramp closures for looting/riot prevention. The surface street we must take as an alternate route itself had looting back in late May-early June (Union Health was evacuated when a currency exchange on the street in question was looted). And though Bob will have the weekend off, he has no idea how to help me--he has never had to cook or clean up after himself, because women have been waiting on him all his life. (We met at a commuter college, where we each lived at home with parents, and moved west to start our life together literally the morning after our wedding). He does know how to shop, provided I give him a specific list, but not how to feed the cats (they have their own picky preferences that are inconsistent) nor even load & run the dishwasher. He can use the microwave or heat stuff in a saucepan, but uses the wrong utensils & dishes (whatever is closest at hand). His computer is in the room where I'll be sleeping, and he will be on it all weekend reading echoes & EKGs, so he actually asked our HK to bring it down to the dining room and plug it in. (Not joking). And he will likely rebel if I ask him to moderate his drinking. (Especially tonight--we both have to be up by 3am). And Monday, for the plaque removal, same thing.
Gordy can't come over, as he is working from home. And our friends are all older than us, immunocompromised, or both. Our HK, of course, has her own DH (who is on 3x/wk dialysis) to take care of.
Oh--and one of the cats is sick again. (Either Happy's IBD or Heidi's possible new kidney stone, dunno which). No way to get either of them to a vet.
