I am neither much of a cook or a canner but I have wonderful memories of going to my aunt and uncle's farm every summer and Mom and Aunt Mildred canned all week. The peaches and green beans are what I remember the most but my aunt had quite a garden. In the midwest in winter we didn't have much that was fresh in the '50's.
Happy Anniversary, Karen and DH! Have a fun weekend.

Happy Anniversary Karen and DH. It's a milestone and I'm glad you're doing something special.

Mazel tov on your anniversary, Karen!
We lucked out on the storms--got just enough rain overnight and then early afternoon to keep the lawn & garden watered. We had no wind damage--literally lost just a few twigs & leaves off the locust tree.We did lose a small partly-ripe tomato, though...to a squirrel, not the winds. Last farmers' market (depressingly small) went off without a hitch (bought Bob 2 empanadas, and an ear of corn; I bought a large cuke so I can make gazpacho out of the tomatoes that are losing their shelf lives. But Skokie & Evanston had trees down, and the W. and NW Sides had trees and power lines down. My HK's husband reports their 'hood lost power for a couple of hours, and a large tree limb fell on the part of their parking slab where her car would've been had she stayed home.
Sadly, our tiny livestock have returned--they left "evidence" overnight in the usual spot, so we threw away all open chocolate bars and jerky, and the handyman/exterminator re-set the unsprung traps, this time baiting them with chocolate in peanut butter instead of the bait gel. We now keep everything they might like in sealed containers, even in the fridge. But at least we're not overrun with them. Maybe they'll find better pickings elsewhere. Neighbors have been doing a lot of construction & digging, which does tend to send mice scurrying to safer digs (alas, like mine).

We just caught two mice in traps in the garage this past week. We get them every year about this time continuing through fall and winter. We have always gotten them in the garage, which is attached to our house. We are careful to seal all spaces, but they can fit through such tiny gaps and my DH has a terrible habit of keeping the back door to the garage open, sometimes both doors, while he works in the yard.
I had my stress test yesterday. How does one know if they pass that? I didn't fall off, that's a plus! Actually, I guess it went well. Near the end, I had trouble breathing which has always been my issue, in spite of needing to wear a mask this time. I am pretty sure I did ok. I'm just glad it's over! I always worry about making a fool of myself.
Today looks to be a great day! Sunny and so far, a cool breeze outside. I went out to take some pictures of the flowers.
Today I need to finish cleaning the home office. Nothing like waiting for the last day before I go back to work!
Have a great day everyone!

I talked with my cousin in rural South Dakota. She thinks that snail-mail is an excellent means of communication and prefers life as it was in 1980. She said to dehydrate the summer squash for soups etc. She liked my idea of storing the okra and tomatillos in vinegar in the fridge until I have enough for a batch. The okra can be canned one jar at a time.

Good morning. We had some very heavy rain last evening and it looks like rain this morning. In the 1970's I did some canning, but haven't since. I get my flu shot in October. Last COVID shot was in May. I might be due for one of them. I had my mamo and ultrasound, yesterday. My first Prolia injection will be Friday.
Cindy, Up here there is not as much of a teacher shortage as a bus driver shortage. This county had an old population, but since the great migration (my words) the demographics have changed. There are more school age children and more teacher age adults. Not sure where the bus drivers went, but they are probably making more money driving something else.

Letting go doesn't mean we don't care. Letting go doesn't mean we shut down. Letting go means we stop trying to force outcomes and make people behave. It means we give up resistance to the way things are, for the moment. It means we stop trying to do the impossible--controlling that which we cannot--and instead, focus on what is possible--which usually means taking care of ourselves. And we do this in gentleness, kindness, and love, as much as possible.

Fortunately we haven't seen ' little ' varmits for some time now. Dh does have some 'cakes' he puts out in places that stop most from getting to us -- but once in awhile.
We had another thunderstorm last night. Ground looks like it got good and wet. Then again, some kind of rain has been predicted to be a part of the whole week. I worry in the meantime and just like this morning, not a leaf is moving everywhere and even some morning coolness will be tempered by the mugginess. Will only increase too until more rain comes. Can't say too much since we have had such 'good' temps coming into the ending of our summer season. That is based more on school re-opening and Labor Day.
So will be doing a few assorteds today. Around here -- there is always something awaiting its time to get done and I've been lazy. With the kids gone I've not been 'on it ' it near as much and this is just the time when I should. Easier to get some things done. I still have a number of items though where I'm going to need the handy services of my SIL to really made a difference. Guess I figured if they could go on vacation, so could I.
I hope anyone getting tests, having surgery or getting test results have a lot of success with all of it.

It's bad that my PC is in the office I am supposed to be cleaning....more like de-junking and cleaning! I am taking a coffee break! Need to set a timer!
You couldn't pay me enough to be a school bus driver where I live! More issue with kids (high school and middle school), traffic is a nightmare even on a good day, and driving in all kinds of weather is not for the faint of heart! I give credit to anyone who wants that job!
I was a bus aide years ago, in the summer, for special education summer school. Did that ever open my eyes to what these drivers go through, and I am not talking about the kids on board! I never realized how many narrow roads are in some of the neighborhoods. I live in the suburbs, but there are communities along some of the smaller rivers/creeks, that look exactly like being in the mountains. Steep hills, winding and narrow roads, with cars parked along them! Bus driver shifts are not easy either, many doing several runs starting early in the morning with a long gap between 10-2:00 and then same runs in reverse until early evening, Add rain, snow etc and it is a really tough job! Yes, I respect and feel extremely grateful for school bus drivers! They don't get nearly the recognition they deserve! Some local districts just put cameras on the outside of their busses to crack down on drivers who ignore the flashing lights!
Awesome that you are canning, mcbaker! I remember my mother canning, I only ever preserved strawberry jam. That was a LONG time ago.
I do love to cook and bake, but get bored trying to think of quick, healthy new meals that my husband will like for dinner. Since he is diabetic and I am trying not to become diabetic, there are limits to my baking, but I do love it!
OK, break time must be over...........ugh!

It's 91 here today, but we expect thunderstorms this afternoon. It's already getting cloudy and darker outside. Things will start to cool down and we expect to have cooler mornings and mid-80 temps. I love the fall.
I had my 4 month hip checkup today. Orthopedic surgeon took X-rays and was very pleased with my progress. I go back in a year and then will see her every 3 - 4 years to check the replacements. My other replacement is 6 years old, but looks fine.
We had lots of house settling in our previous home. It was 50 years old. One day we noticed our cat staring intently at the wall. We had some gaps in our crawl space and mice had gotten into the wall. Warm weather (and our cat) got them out of the house thankfully. The exterminator filled all the gaps in the crawl space and laid some traps.
Enjoy your day.

Maverick - I'm sure your stress test is just fine. When my husband had his almost 2.5 years ago they had to inject drugs to get his heart rate up and then he failed it big time - led to immediate cardiac catheter and then immediate hospitalization and Heparin IV and two days later quintuple bypass. Thankfully, he is doing is doing great.
Thankfully no critters lately - we were in the mountains in early July and there was a deceased (doesn't sound as bad as dead) mouse but thankfully it wasn't decomposed as no one had been in the place for a few weeks or more.
Card - glad to hear all went well with your appointment
Petite - also good to hear all went well with mammo

We had a very heavy storm and the gutter could not take the volume of water running through it. This gutter has a dent.

Not only is there often a right and wrong, but what goes around does
come around, Karma exists, chickens do come home to roost, and
as my mother, Phyllis, liked to say, "There is always a day of reckoning."
The good among the great understand that every choice we make adds to
the strength or weakness of our spirits—ourselves, or to use an old
fashioned word for the same idea, our souls. That is every human's life
work: to construct an identity bit by bit, to walk a path step by step,
to live a life that is worthy of something higher, lighter, more
fulfilling, and maybe even everlasting.

Our power went out at 2pm yesterday and came back on at 4:30am this morning. We have a small generator, so we were able to keep our refrigerator running. There was a microburst about a mile away that took down 25 power lines. The attached link has pictures of the damage. It’s a beautiful breezy day today. Meeting my brother, SIL and daughter for lunch to celebrate DH birthday today.
Hope the gutter repair is able to be done quickly petite.
Enjoy your day.

We went to the NYS Fair yesterday and had a blast. Byrne dairy milk and soft ice cream can’t be beat. Peter Noone sang at 1, so many songs we knew. He ended with I’m Henry the 8th… he is a very engaging speaker too. But at the end it started raining. We ran for shelter and ended up inside safe. But a long day up at 5:45 AM and asleep around 1 AM. It poured quite a bit and all the way home too.
Today was delivery of my U-box from Uhaul. Right about 9 AM. I later ran to a gf house, she had boxes she’s never used and gave to me. Then off to buy packing tape. Ended up with a new toilet seat too, couldn’t pass a sale. HA! I also received an email for a blinds.com sale. Ended up taking the time to order a pleated blackout shade for our bedroom. Old one has been abused by the sun, the reflective material inside double pleat is visible from the outside. Once while driving towards the house I couldn’t tell what it was. Then I had replaced a weather strip on the window and that’s when I could see the reflective material. It was time.
I’m tired from yesterdays trip, over 12,000 steps, and running errands earlier today. Plus, now I have NO excuse not to start emptying the two bedrooms for painting. My mom would have said no rest for the wicked!
We have a baseball game at 6:30. If I’m lucky it will e a pitchers game- fast outs and get me back home. Hope your day was less hectic than mine.
PS - they finished resurfacing our front steps while we were gone. It looks nice. We giggled, the neighbors will think we’re moving with all the repairs going on. Then toss in the U-box!

Card, I'm sure glad your power is back. That sounded like some storm - your microburst. Hope that is the last of those for some time.
Glad you enjoyed your very 'early' day Cindy, but you are right -- no rest for the wicked. I know the feeling from some time back but not of late. Guess that is good. We didn't do a lot today but started the smaller cats for getting their flea meds. We did big cats day before yesterday. We stagger it all as some of them don't like the procedure and alert the others to their "doom" so we learned a while back that we do better not to try and get them all at the same time.
Laundry to do tomorrow. I hope you all had a good day.

Had my annual audiological this afternoon. Slight changes, but things are relatively stable. My hearing aids are 5 years old so I need to get new ones. I go to Costco and they do a thorough evaluation but because of the difference in my 2 ears, I have to be seen by a doctor to rule out any problems. I've had a hearing loss in right ear all my life (or at least since 5 or 6) but it has gotten worse and left ear has declined. I commented that my hearing as gotten worse with age and due to chemo and he confirmed the side effect of chemo. We talked about cochlear implants but he doesn't think I'm a candidate. Even with my HAs, I miss stuff or don't hear correctly - on the phone today, someone told me their name, - I thought she said "Missy" but it was "Nicky". So need to schedule appointment with ENT. My current HA are Kirkland brand and made by Rexton. They are now made by Phonak. He suggested that I go with Rexton as they are much better for my hearing loss and I need to get an Ultra Powder "motor" or whatever its called. Will also need a custom mold for right ear instead of the little wire thingy i have now. i'm sure it will be a couple months before this all gets sorted out as my appointment with ENT isn't till early November.
Time for bed - 4:30/4:45 comes early. Sweet dreams

Cardplayer, you have given me hope. I’m having left hip replaced, Monday after Labor Day, the 12 th- the posterior approach with all the no bending past 90 degrees, no leg crossing, no turning toes inward. Am a complete nervous wreck and 3 days before on the 9th, have yearly mammo and first ultrasound. Scanxiety.Am very afraid I’ll make a wrong move and dislocate. Can’t wait to also be 4 months out. So glad you are fine.

Karen1956 - I'm thinking of going to Costco for HA and audiologist when I need new HA. Reviews have been good on their brands. Right now I have 6+ year old Oticon 2 that have been refurbished once at year 5. My audiologist provides batteries, domes and mini-wax so I have her mail them to me and see her once a year for testing. My previous insurance covered 95% of HA cost.
Keywestfan - my orthopedic surgeon had me start PT the day after surgery. I had anterior approach after having posterior for my previous one. They gave me some simple exercises to start with at home, mostly to keep me moving. I had PT twice a week. Will be sending you healing vibes and prayers on your surgery day.
Enjoy your day.

Judy, any reason why your surgeon prefers the posterior approach to THR? Unilateral or bilateral? They will likely send you home with a wedge pillow to place between your hips as you sleep on your back. 90 degrees is basically sitting in a chair or car (if you can ride in a reclining seat, even better). Do you have a reacher tool so you needn't bend over to pick up or stretch to reach things? BTW, at least in Chicago, senior centers, in-patient health workers and those in active cancer treatment will get the updated COVID boosters next week ahead of the rest of us "golden oldies."
We're going to Ravinia tomorrow night to see Emmylou Harris & Mary Chapin Carpenter. This time, I planned ahead--the show starts at 7pm, so I made a reservation at the Tree Top buffet for 6 pm. Shouldn't take us more than 45 min. from seating to drinks to eating to the check. We'll catch the 5:33 out of Davis St., which arrives at the gate at 5:57; and confirmed that the Sherman/Davis garage is 24/7, so no having to deal with the CTA Red & Purple lines. (I will SpotHero it). Now, if only Bob leaves work at 2:30 like he promised and doesn't get stuck in trafflic...

California under the heat dome...yikes...we also have a fire about 8 miles away. I am hoping the wind doesn't change..the last time there was a fire in that spot the wind was coming our way and we had to evacuate. Crazy weather everywhere it seems..

Lisa - fingers crossed. Just reading a novel that talks about fire damage in Ventura and the PCH.

Brother and daughter are both in dangerous heat areas in California. Brother has serious health problems, but better now. No fires near them, because fires in past years have burned most of what could be burned.

Everyone in CA stay safe. Heat continues in CO.
Mary - your picture doesn't come through.
Have a great Friday

socallisa I hope the fires stay away from your area, 8 miles is close enough.
We started emptying one bedroom yesterday. I figured we’d do 3 boxes and take our time. Eight boxes are full, and in the U-box in the driveway. I washed bedding, and curtains. We laid suits and dress shirts on a couch on the front porch, covered them with the clean bedding and curtains. I’ve got 3 sets of sheets on the floor of my bedroom closet. Extra pillows stuffed alongside my bed in a corner. Paintings in my bedroom between 2 dressers. You get the gist, a mess. I hate disarray, it makes me anxious, stresses me out. The rooms are small, so my bedroom really doesn’t have the space to put more things into it. But this too shall pass, by mid month I hope. I let the painter know that by Tuesday, due to holiday weekend and plans, one room will be emptied. He’ll get back to me Wednesday on when he’s starting.
Weather here yesterday and today has been cooler. Right now it’s 57 out! High was 73 yesterday, which made it perfect for emptying that bedroom. Today it’s supposed to hit 79.
I’m off to pick up my grand niece from soccer. We’re headed to the Herkimer Diamond Mine for a last pick up & go adventure. Next week school starts and it’s a whole new ballgame. Enjoy your day lafies

For those in the west, stay safe. We’ve been lucky here in the Shenandoah Valley. Cool mornings and then a gradual warm up. Woke up this morning with sciatica. So I’m taking it easy today. Tylenol and heating pad. Must have over done it somehow yesterday.
I’m looking forward to becoming a grandmother. They’ll probably induce her since she has gestational diabetes and her age. Could be in two weeks.
Have a wonderful day.

Cindy, 57 degrees sounds wonderful. Awwww
Sociallisa, stay safe
I had my first Prolia shot. So far, so good.

Karen, now I can't see it either. Right ear is better in low (250 and 500 Hz) frequencies. 45 db loss in right at low frequencies. 55 for left ear. Between 750 and 8000 Hz, 65 to 75 db loss in both ears.
