Darn. I just lost my post.
Everyone stay warm.

carol, I hate when that happens! I hope you wrote again as I am typing this and that all is well in NOLA.
Sandy, I hope you were able to get to the car dealership for your service appointment. I too have a Subaru and I am so thankful for it! I travel 45 mins to the dealership in Doylestown PA for all my maintenance. They have been wonderful to me, not only when I purchased my car, which was the best buying experience I ever had, but for all the years of service. They never tell me I need something I don't need, in fact, the last time I was in my service agent told me I could wait on some things as she knew I was battling cancer and that I wouldn't miss my next appointment in the early spring.
You mentioned power grids and I can't for the life of me understand why the gov't is pushing all electric vehicles when we don't have adequate power grids now! During the summer it is typical for rolling blackouts to occur. Hybrid cars I understand but total electric seems like putting the cart before the horse!
Betrayal, thanks for a memory! I used to make cherry winks too, it was a childhood favorite, off the box of corn flakes! I am impressed that you made 4 different types of cookies, and I can't imagine making as many as you did last year! Glad Ragen warmed up to your DS! It made me sad to think of your DS and MIL. One of my granddaughter's was born in mid-November, another mid- January. I can't imagine not giving two gifts!! Sad that a grandmother would think that way, even if one gift was not as expensive, celebrating a child's birthday is special and important! I would give two gifts even for a grandchild born on Christmas! I do not like the "joint" birthday/Christmas gifts unless it is a one time deal and something super special! My sister was born days before Christmas and always felt cheated either on her birthday or Christmas because my parents combined them so often!
Petite, so very sorry to read about Miss Felix. You were very lucky to have her so long, and she was lucky to have you! I am curious as to what Southern Brown Sugar Pie is. I grew up on "Shoo Fly Pie" as I lived in the heart of PA Dutch Country which are where my ancestors settled. My father spoke PA Dutch, before he learned English. I only know some phrases but wish I had learned it before he passed.
Reader, glad you are able to visit safely with family! New England is a great place to celebrate the holidays!
Mary, hope Tippy is being good! I used pee pads for my little chihuahua mix rescue for years. Who can blame them for not wanting to go out in the cold and rain! Also, the mouse in a match box ornament sounds so cute! Sorry you don't have it anymore.
Cardplayer, my DH and I buy what we want as well, although we still wrap the gifts. I have more ability to buy surprise gifts for my DH, than he can for me. I usually buy things I really want, slippers, scarf, blouse, etc early, as sales are great before Christmas, and more often than not I actually forget what I bought so it is a delayed surprise! LOL We don't focus on gifts for us as much for us, as we do for our children, grandchildren.
Wren, I hope you did get to see your DH!
I saw my PS this week and I am on another round of two antibiotics for mild cellulitis that is not clearing up on my recently reconstructed breast. Fluid keeps building up. He sent some fluid to the lab just to double check. I think I am fine and this is just how my body is, but I trust him and having had cellulitis that landed me in the hospital for days, in 2003, I will do what he wants me to do. Prevention is key!
I will end with what is a huge WIN for me, and all who suffer from Lymphedema and are on Medicare. The Lymphedema Treatment Act has passed the Senate in the end of year Bill, and goes back to the House, which passed it prior as a separate Bill. Vote is today and hopefully will pass and move on to be signed into law by the President! This is huge as Medicare will finally cover lymphedema compression garments!

betrayal - I may have shared this before. My dad's birthday was 12/26. Mine is 12/29. Dad worked retail and was off on Christmas Day. So we'd celebrate our birthdays together since the family was altogether. I didn't mind; I was a daddy's girl and enjoyed sharing our birthdays together. Got multiple presents (Hanukkah, Christmas, birthday). Wonderful memories.
Sandy - hope you're able to get to your car appointment before the snow and bitterly cold hits. Stay safe.
Carole - losing posts happens to me occasionally. I've started to write my posts in notepad and then copy them. Can't wait till BCO gets the new site up and running.
Mavericksmom - sorry you're still dealing with cellulitis. I hope this next round of antibiotics gets rid of the infect for you. Didn't realize that lymphadema garments weren't covered by Medicare. Hopefully that will be remedied. Medicare covers mastectomy bras (3 bras every 3 months) which is nice. Just need to find a place that files the paperwork.
Baking cookies. Not cherry winks - MIL use to make those, along with chocolate chip, fig bar, lemon bars, sugar cookies, and sandies. I'm making Chocolate Chip per DD request. The temperature dropped quickly this morning. The rain has stoppe, but very cold (20) with wind gusts up to 40mph. Stay safe and warm.

Well, the weather forecasters were off again today because the snow that was to be well north of us is currently in my yard! A doe was just at the bird feeder and had a dusting of snow on her head and back. The birds are out in full force and they need the calories to ward off the cold so I chased her after about 5 minutes. They can't digest the seed anyhow so eating it could lead to starvation at this time of year. Their diet changes according to the season and seed is a no-no in the winter for this reason. The temperature is now 33 degrees but it is quite windy so I imagine the wind chill factor is making it in the 20's. The cardinals keep sitting in the Japanese maple right outside my window and I believe that they do represent visits from family that has passed on. So far it has been a male and female so I guess my parents have visited in time for Christmas. The juncos are back but I have yet to see the tufted titmouse.
Happy to hear that the bill to cover lymphedema products passed and is awaiting approval by the House. This is a good thing and a nice Christmas gift for those that need it.
cardplayer: I really loved sharing my birthday with my Dad for all those years and see that you feel the same way about sharing with your Dad. Thanks for the memory. He died 13 years ago in December and I do miss him so much.
mavericksmom: Hope the cellulitis heals soon. Not something you need to be dealing with right now.
Sandy: Hope the Chicago area quiets down weatherwise so it has less of an impact on the holiday. Stay safe.
After making cookies for the past 3 days I am finally calling it quits. DSIL called for the recipe for Russian Tea Cakes and he plans on making them. He also wants to do a cookie swap which is funny because so far he has one cookie batch. DD and DSIL will be dog and cat sitting in January so whatever cookies we have left will be available to them anyway, so why a swap?
His DM just had an abnormal mammogram and has been referred for an ultrasound and biopsy. She had a birads 4 reading and I am hoping it is nothing.
I think I will spend some time doing genealogy today since I have been lax lately and have gotten some new info to record from my genealogy cousin. She got access to some Catholic Church records using a new resource and this is info I did not have. It is nice to be able to have someone that shares the same interest and that we share our finds. May not see each other often but do keep in touch via emails, text and phone calls. Our common relative was my ggf and for her it was her gggf with different spouses. She is a descendant of his first wife and I am a product of his second wife's line. We brainstorm about new approaches and that has been a win-win situation so far except in determining his lineage which is still elusive. Someday we may find it so we keep looking.
I hope everyone has a good day. Stay safe and warm wherever you may be.

Loved all the posts today. I so admire those who can name each person and respond. I either go to another page or try to hard to remember what I want to say that I usually only deal well with my deepest thought and don't do much but mention the others. I have never been prolific with ideas and information -- but I do love reading everything and I am always happy when there is a lot of conversation and expressed ideas and viewpoints.
Brrrr. It has been hanging around 5 below and zero here. I don't think the wind has really stopped since it started up a day ago. Sounds like it will be with us for another couple of days too. I cannot believe in a week or so it is slated to be 51 degrees. We have a couple of things we could use from Walmart. My kids have gone out but we likely will ask them to go for us. They can tolerate all of this I'm sure better than we can. Our snow level is quite low -- couple inches. Enough to cover the ground well and that is about it so fortune smiled on us there. Most people probably know but I live in south central Illinois which is 4 hrs. away going north to where Sandy lives in the Chicago area. I'm hoping she and in fact everyone stays safe during this time.
Before I forget I did want to say I so admire those who study and work with their genealogy. I think I am not patient enough for it.
Hope you are all staying safe and can stay in if possible. Before this yr. I might have scoffed at staying in but not this yr. My age has finally caught up with me and help me find some good sense about how I do things.

All that baking is making me fat just from reading about the goodies. We gave up gifts for each other a number of years ago and give to charities. Did have fun shopping for teen-agers at Target last week. We planned to each pick $100 worth of gifts but DH got carried away! The food bank still had toys when I was there at noon and expected more to arrive this afternoon. They will be open until things run out. I'm sure some of the stores in the strip mall weren't happy with the line of cars. FB had both Santa and Mrs Claus (does anyone know if she ever had a first name) who were fantastic, Even I got my picture taken!
Tomorrow we will have dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant. Will go to BFF for Christmas Day (we did Thanksgiving and will do New Year's Eve) and to an English friend's for Boxing Day. More social activity than usual for us.
Thinking of all of you who are in the weather path. Sounds awful. DD lost her power about 5:00 and is already cold. Be careful out there.
Merry Christmas for those who celebrate.

I moved my car's routine service appt. to next Fri., when it'll be merely raining and 50F. Just not worth going out today, as it didn't get up to 0F till 11pm, the snow that fell yesterday is whipping around in the howling winds, and there's ice on the roads beneath whatever snow remains. The city explained it's not plowing or salting the side streets because the snow provides some traction, and the salt it normally spreads doesn't work when it gets this cold. Not worth risking a spinout (or even falling on the way to & from my garage), never mind bundling up six ways from Sunday. Never have I been so glad to wear a mask outdoors and into a restaurant--nobody's gonna make fun of me now.
Since we dined out on Wed., one of my test kits expires Sunday (that's with the FDA's extension), my nose constantly drips in cold temperatures & dry air (vasomotor rhinorrhea, which I've had my entire adult life) and I am bored beyond bored, I COVID-tested. Negative, whew! So we're safe to go out and freeze our keisters off for reveillon dinner tomorrow night at Big Jones. (Hoping Bob makes it back safely from Oak Lawn in time--we purposely made a late res).
Kids pulled into the TX hill country (Dripping Springs) cabin just before midnight yesterday, and report that the grid is holding up so far. We'll Zoom either tomorrow before we leave for dinner or on Sunday. They head back here Tues.

Thank you everyone for your kind words.
Southern brown sugar pie is eggs, brown sugar, butter, vanilla & salt. I think the difference is molasses and flour.
28 degrees this morning.

Betrayal, I loved your word description of the deer and birds. I do love birds and consider them a gift of nature. We once had deer wander onto our property but most of their habitat is gone now thanks to all the development.
Our electric pump took a break last night and stopped cycling on and off. We still had water streaming into two sinks since the well is a flow well. DH went out when he got up and repositioned some lights in the pump house. He just came in with coffee refills and announced with gladness that the pump had come back to life. Hurray! Now the toilets will refill and the dishwasher will be usable. So many luxuries we take for granted.
I can't imagine having those cookies in the house. I would be munching on them and gaining unneeded pounds. DH likes to bake Quaker Oats oatmeal chocolate chip cookies at Christmas. Many years we gave the neighbors cookies for Christmas. My job was to buy pretty containers. This year he made two batches and we will bring them to my sister's house tomorrow when we go for Christmas lunch. The cookies are very popular in my family and dh enjoys his reputation. His cookies are not dainty.
The arctic cold (22 degrees and Sunny, according to my laptop) is supposed to ease off tomorrow afternoon. I won't be sorry to see it go. I enjoy some "normal" wintry weather but this is not normal. It should make us appreciate normal.
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to everyone.

The Art of Keeping Christmas
How can we best keep Christmas? How can we best defeat the little bit of Scrooge in all of us and experience the glory of the Great Day?
By sinking the shafts of our spirits deep beneath the sparkling tinsel of the surface of Christmas and renewing within us the radiance of the inner meaning of the season.
By following the Star on an inward journey to Bethlehem to stand again in awe and wonder before the Babe in a Manger.
By rediscovering the faith and simplicity of a little child, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.
By being still and listening to the angels sing within our hearts.
By quietly evaluating our lives according to the Master's standards as set forth in the Sermon on the Mount.
By reaffirming the supremacy of the spirit in our conquest of ourselves.
By rededicating ourselves to the Master's ideals of Peace, Brotherhood, and Good Will.
By resolving to give ourselves away to others in love, joy and devotion.
By using the light of Christmas to guide us through the darkness of the coming year, refusing to go back to the dim kerosene lamps of the spirit when the brilliant electricity of Christmas is available to show us the way.

Today is bitter cold with temp at 15 but wind chill makes it probably around zero. This is our typical winter. There is a light dusting of snow on the ground and luckily the driveway did not freeze so we can drive up and down. Lid to bird feeder was frozen shut so seed was distributed on the ground and the birds are still coming. We have 2 large evergreen trees of undetermined variety (told they are cypresses but cannot confirm this) in the backyard that the birds perch in when waiting for access to the feeder. The cardinals look like decorations on the tree and it makes it look so Christmassy. It's funny how the branches droop when it is this cold and the leaves on the rhododendrons curl. The drooping branches almost look like Spanish moss which is not native to this area. Can't imagine it being that cold in LA but I guess you do get cold waves, too.
Getting house ready for tomorrow so vacuuming, dusting and straightening up. Just need to finish family room since dining room table is already set, will move gifts to living room, and then I am going to sit a spell. DS and family go to in-laws for Christmas this year so they will come here on Monday. I wasn't going to offer more than a charcuterie board but found a large lasagna in the freezer, so now they get both. I jokingly told him I was going to ask his MIL for her leftover ham and serve that. She serves ham for every occasion and it is not his favorite. Tomorrow will be prime rib which is my annual splurge. DD and DSIL will come here for dinner. I will also serve baked potatoes and roasted asparagus. They will bring a surprise for dessert and we do have the cookies, too. So next 2 days will be busy for sure. Dug out my Christmas dishes that can go in dishwasher and will use them to brighten up the table. Our neighborhood purchases bags and candles for luminarias on Christmas eve and a local contractor donates sand for the bags. So come dusk we will line the driveway and front of property with lighted candles. We usually take a ride around our neighborhood to see the luminarias lit at other homes. It brings me peace, hope that we can connect at least once a year and agree on one thing promoting unity.
Hope Santa is good to all of you even if you no longer exchange presents. So have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Festivus. Stay warm and safe.

Finished baking the cookies, made the stuffing and washed the serving dishes for tomorrow. DH ironed the table cloth, which probably has seen better days. Tomorrow morning, I’ll make sweet potatoes and the turkey. DD is bring some of the other sides. Probably way too much food for just four of us.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Festivals for the rest of us.

Coming in late with lots of wishes for a wonderful Eve and Christmas day, whatever you do and whomever you are able to see or spend plenty of time with.
Cold and windy here as has been the case for the last three days. The sun is out fairly bright so that takes a bit of the edge off. Yesterday's trip for meds to Walmart's was something else. The driving was fine if you were careful and going into the store, although we had to park farther away then I like was all right. We shopped quickly and got back out, but my sinuses had kicked in so leaving the store I ended up with what felt like frozen nose with all the dampness in my nose. Wow - so fast. I can easily see why they said not to go out if you didn't have too.
Was going to my friend's today to check on her, but when I told her I might, we were not having this awful weather. I know she will be okay about it, but I really don't want to go out while the wind remains. I can do the cold weather, but gale-like winds now are too much for me.
It is still hard for me to believe in a week or so we will be in the 50's and expecting rain. I also can't believe how fast '23 seems to be coming. I'm only now feeling used to writing 2022. Hmmm.
Not sure yet of the menu for tomorrow. Maybe another roast. I procrastinated about turkey although there is a ham in my fridge ready to go. I will have to cook two things though since ham is too salty for me. I made sure to have the go-withs for anything -- so I'll see how I feel in the moning.
Hoping good health and good cheer along with some good old-fashioned peace and serenity.
Love and blessings to all.

We melted out enough that I was able to go see DH. Really happy about that. We'll go back in the morning and take his stocking. DD bought some easy games he can try. If he doesn't like them someone else might.

Merry Christmas to you all! 39 this morning, 41 now after1 AM. High tomorrow will hit 50 which is t very warm but compared to a lot of you, I’ll take it. No beach, no pool, dinner home tomorrow. Sod t this evening at a neighbors house party. I haven’t eaten that much good in sone time.
Petite, my heart goes out to you. Losing a pet is sad, and even more so around the holidays.

We FaceTimed with Gordy & Leslie tonight. They couldn't get the ranch in Dripping Springs this year, so they took a 2-story AirBnB. Her folks, and her sisters & their husbands (her older sis & husband flew down from Anchorage, which is warmer than we are right now, so she reports that the unusual TX cold "feels like home"), plus the dog are all there. Leslie's younger sister made prime rib & Yorkshire pudding. The dog, Dot (terrier-cattle dog mix) tried to lick their computer screen, but our black cat Heidi decided to walk across the keyboard of my iPad and then mooned them.
We had an impossibly huge Reveillon dinner at BIg Jones (and more wines than we could make a dent in). Since we were the last ones there (and were able to move up our reservation to accommodate their earlier closing), they sent us home with FOUR desserts: two each Doberge cake (filled with orange curd, chocolate ganache and hazelnut praline) and fruitcakes (filled with toffee pudding and topped with toasted meringue and glazed cranberries). I guess my cheat day will morph into a cheat weekend.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone. We have survived the icy cold and will enjoy a warming up beginning this afternoon.
Wren, so glad you were able to visit your dh.
All the planned meals and occasions sound wonderful.

Spent yesterday with Dad and will go over this afternoon. Eventide had this couch set up for taking photos. He turned 96 in August, so blessed to be able to spend another Christmas with him.

Christmas is the one day of the year that carries real hope and promise for all humankind. It carries the torch of brotherhood. It is the one day in the year when most of us grow big of heart and broad of mind. It is the single day when most of us are as kind and as thoughtful of others as we know how to be; when most of us are as gracious and generous as we would like always to be; when the joy of home is more important than the profits of the office; when peoples of all races speak cheerfully to each other when they meet; when high and low wish each other well; and the one day when even enemies forgive and forget.0 -
Puffin -- truly a wonderful gift.

puffin, I had to do a double take looking at the beautiful photo you shared, because you look so much like my oldest sister, who sadly passed of cancer years ago, and your father has similar features of my beloved father, also deceased. You both look so happy and it warmed my heart that they would put a couch in front of such a beautiful mural, for wonderful photos! I can't thank you enough for sharing that photo!
To all here, too many posts to catch up on but sounds like everyone had a good Christmas/Holiday celebration! I too had a wonderful Christmas. We went to my DD's house on Christmas Eve. She made the entire dinner, so this was the first time since I was a teenager, that I didn't make something for Christmas Dinner! I was so grateful because I am still in recovery mode from my October surgery. The grandkids were adorable and my DH and I had a wonderful time with DD and SIL. Family is everything to me, food, gifts are just icing on the cake. Yesterday my DH a I had an enjoyable and quiet, stress-free Christmas! We will FaceTime with DS and family later today.
I did realize I need to retire ASAP. My health is not at a level it needs to be at in order to work at my job. I am more than ready to retire, wish I had done so last June, but as they say, hindsight is 20/20.
Still cold here, 15 this morning, but warmer than much of the country. I can't complain. Sun is up again and seems to be a beautiful day. I hope everyone here stays warm and well!
For those in Florida, I did watch the Dolphins/Green Bay game yesterday. I am a long time Dolphins fan going back to my early teen years. My father loved football, so I was raised on it. I was "madly in love" with Bob Griese when he was QB for the Dolphins. My father played high school football with Dophin's running back, Jim Kick's dad. When my DD was three, my DH and I were watching the Dolphins play and my husband yelled out "Go Miami!" My DD responded with, "it's not your Ami, it's mommy's Ami!" Out of the mouths of babes! I really wanted to see the Dolphin's win yesterday, but it was an exciting game.
Wishing everyone here a wonderful day!

I look forward to reading your posts in 2023. My wish is for all of us to enjoy good health.

So glad you got to see your DH for Christmas wren. Glad to hear you had some warmer weather Cindy. Sounds like you had a Christmas feast Sandy. Nice that you could face time with family. Glad you're warming up Carole. Nice to spend time with your father for Christmas puffin. Great picture. So glad you had an enjoyable holiday at your DD mavericksmom. So glad you had a good time with your grandchildren. DD, SIL, and GD came over for midday meal and gift exchange. GD is 3 1/2 months old. She's babbling and smiling, just a delight. Back to normal today. Laundry and heading to the grocery store shortly. It's still cold here. We won't be above freezing today. I got a hand warmer as one of my gifts - so that'll help keep my hands from turning blue when I get cold. Enjoy your day. And for those in Canada - happy Boxing Day!

Cardplayer, my little great niece Hannah is the same age as your GD. She was the highlight of our small Christmas gathering at my middle sister's house. I was totally smitten by her as she smiled at me and everyone else.
I was very impressed by your post responding to everyone. You either take notes as you read or have an incredible memory!
0 -
Carole - I take notes. Wish I had a better memory.
0 -
cardplayer, I normally take notes, too. Not today. Both DH and I have come down with a cold or flu and we are miserable. We did have a wonderful time Christmas Eve with the family. The food came out wonderful. People took baggies of cookies, cake and candies home with them. There is still tons of sweets and some roast left.
Illinoislady, I loved the last couple of quotes. They are beautiful.
Hope all of you up in the snow are doing well and soon things will warm up.

Sandy, glad you moved the car's appt with the "doctor". Sandy, it is great to be able to have a video call with relatives who can't be with you!! Wren, glad you could get out to see your hubby.
Puffin, so glad you still have your father. I have an aunt on that age range. I have been asking her (retired nurse) about my developmental history (thinking about mild CP). Sent her a Christmas card (along with some to other relatives who have not entered the cyber-world). She sent me one and asked me to look on the back of it. The artist is handicapped, and signed the card, handwriting looks a bit worse than mine. So nice to have relatives like that who can remember things for you.
I discovered how to do it. Start from when you last posted. Write your responses. Copy. Go to next page, and paste. If there is a next page, do likewise.
I am still delighted with my snow-tire. On the 28th, my bike mechanic will come over and put it on. That day is the party, so while the wheel is warming up in my apartment, we can enjoy the party.
I still have the present from my daughter on its way, and a check from my sister for a skirt she bought for her granddaughter. My apartment is set up for a person using a wheelchair. That includes a cut-out piece on the side of my bathtub, so it is only useful as a shower. I discovered these: Amazon.com: Portable Bathtub Thickened Insulation, Double Drainage, Folding Portable, Suitable for Small Spaces (Bathroom, Outdoor, RV) Soaking, spa(maple leaf) : Home & Kitchen This looks so cool-- I mean warm! I have it on my list.
I took Tippy on a longer walk this morning. Just glad I didn't fall. Using one hiking pole, next time if we decide to go through the park, I will wear the cleats on my boots. My ortho said that if I fall and re-injure my knee, it will be immediate replacement, which would be difficult for rehabilitation with heavy snow on the ground.
Went to a friend's for dinner-- we had tacos. She had to get the car out because I couldn't walk over there.
I made a batch of cranberry-oatmeal cookies and one of peanut butter cookies. Will still make some frosted gingerbread cookies, some bread, and a cranberry curd pie.

Money may be the husk of many things, but not the kernel. It brings you food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health; acquaintances, but not friends; servants, but not loyalty; days of joy, but not peace or happiness. -Henrik Ibsen

Oh quiet lovely days. Yesterday as well as today. I think the wind wants to make an exit which will be wonderful. I did not take notes so just know I have read everything written up to my entry and have good feelings for all of it. It is always a joy to me to share the feelings others describe as they write an entry and especially respond to others. I try and feel exactly what they do. I hope I manage to come close. Overnight it snowed a bit more, but it was really light so didn't really add anything more to what was already here. It got up to about 33 today. We made an excursion to Walmart's and lucked out and got a really close parking spot.
Crowded there but not bad for us since we didn't need much, and only a few grocery type necessities. We were pretty much in and out which was nice for us. Later we went out to check, since not far away, if the Church was doing food, but they weren't which was fine since we had all kinds of leftovers to work with., but it had started to sleet a bit when we left. I'm hoping that part didn't last long. When we drove back in our driveway it seemed more like just snowflakes on the windshield. Likely even that didn't last long. Now that a White Christmas came and went I can go back to no snow and be just fine. I'll also be quite glad to be rid of the brutal cold. I guess it's an age thing since it seemed really bothersome to me this yr. Most of the previous yrs. I've not much minded and even loved taking long walks in the snow.
Hope you are all doing well and hope you and Dh get to feeling better petite.
